Most Bluetooth pairing failures are recoverable without replacing the headphones. Charge the headset, put it into its actual discovery mode, keep it close to the phone or computer, remove stale pairings and competing connections, then pair it again. If it still fails, testing with a second host device identifies whether the problem follows the headphones or the original device.
Use this order to fix the pairing failure
Work through the checks in sequence rather than repeating the same pairing attempt. Each step rules out a different cause: power, discovery mode, range, saved Bluetooth data, another active connection, software configuration or hardware failure.
- Charge the headphones and confirm they turn on.
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone, tablet or computer.
- Put the headphones into their model-specific pairing or discovery mode.
- Keep both devices within a short distance and away from likely radio interference.
- Select the headphones from the host device’s available Bluetooth devices.
- Forget the old Bluetooth entry and pair again if the saved connection fails.
- Disconnect the headphones from any other phone or computer.
- Restart both devices, then test pairing with a second host.
- Use a factory reset only when the exact model’s official instructions require it.
A headset that is powered on is not necessarily discoverable. The Bluetooth radio may be on while the headphones are still connected to a previous device or waiting in normal playback mode.

1. Check power, charging and Bluetooth basics
Charge the headphones completely enough to pair
Low battery can stop a headset from entering pairing mode or make it shut down during the attempt. Charge the headphones or place the earbuds in their charging case, and connect the case to power if its indicator suggests that it is empty. Apple’s accessory guidance likewise recommends confirming that an accessory is on and fully charged or connected to power before troubleshooting.

Watch for signs of a charging fault: no indicator at all, an indicator that never changes, or a headset that switches off as soon as the cable is removed. Those symptoms point to a model-specific battery, cable, case or charging-contact issue rather than a normal Bluetooth setting.
Turn Bluetooth on at the host device
On the phone, tablet or computer, open the system Bluetooth settings and verify that Bluetooth is enabled. Toggle it off, wait a few seconds and turn it on again if the setting appears enabled but no devices are found. Do not rely only on a quick-settings icon; open the full Bluetooth page so you can see whether the device is scanning and whether the headphones appear.
Bring the devices close together
Place the headphones beside the phone or computer while pairing. Sony’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends moving the source and headphones closer when a connection is unstable. Keep the first attempt away from crowded wireless equipment, large metal objects and other electronics that could interfere with the short-range radio signal. Once pairing succeeds, you can test the normal listening distance.
2. Put the headphones into true pairing mode
Why the normal power button is not enough
Discovery mode makes the headset announce itself to nearby Bluetooth devices. A short press may only power the headphones on, while a longer press, a separate Bluetooth button or a button on the charging case starts pairing. Use the manual or the official support page for the exact model; button combinations are not universal.
Common control patterns
- A dedicated Bluetooth button may need to be held until an indicator flashes or an audio prompt announces pairing.
- Some over-ear models use a long press of the power control rather than a separate Bluetooth button.
- True-wireless earbuds may require opening the case and holding its case button while the earbuds remain inside.
As an example of why model-specific directions matter, Bose QuietComfort instructions use the Bluetooth control and an indicator to signal pairing mode. Sony’s WF-1000XM4 instructions use different actions for first-time pairing and pairing a second device. On that Sony model, pairing mode is canceled if setup is not completed within five minutes. Those details should not be copied to another headset.
Confirm the indicator or voice prompt
Start scanning on the host only after the headphones indicate that they are discoverable. A steady light can mean powered on or already connected; a flashing pattern or spoken “pairing” message is the useful confirmation. If the indicator never changes, turn the headphones off, wait several seconds, turn them on and retry the model’s pairing-mode command.

3. Pair from the correct device menu
Android phones and tablets
- Open Settings, then Connected devices or the device’s Bluetooth section.
- Choose Pair new device (the wording varies by manufacturer and Android version).
- Put the headphones into discovery mode and wait for their name under available devices.
- Tap the headphones and accept a pairing request or PIN if one appears.
Google’s Android guidance notes that some instructions apply only to Android 15 and later, and menu names or availability differ by device maker and hardware. If the headphones are listed under saved devices but will not connect, open that entry’s settings and choose Forget, then return to Pair new device.
Recommended Free Tools
iPhone and iPad
- Open Settings and tap Bluetooth.
- Leave the page open while the headphones are in discovery mode.
- Tap the headphones under Other Devices.
- Approve any pairing prompt and wait for the device to move to My Devices with a connected status.
Keep the accessory nearby and charged during the attempt. If it was paired with another phone, tablet or computer, unpair or disconnect it there first; an active connection can prevent the iPhone or iPad from taking over.
Windows 10 and Windows 11
- Open Settings and go to Bluetooth & devices (Windows 11) or Devices > Bluetooth & other devices (Windows 10).
- Turn Bluetooth on and select Add device or Add Bluetooth or other device.
- Choose Bluetooth, then select the headphones when they appear.
- Follow the confirmation prompt and wait for the status to show that the headphones are connected.
If Windows lists the headphones but the connection fails, select the device, choose Remove device, restart Bluetooth and add it again. Windows 11 users can also run the Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
4. Remove stale pairings and competing connections
Forget a failed saved entry
A saved Bluetooth record can contain an outdated address, profile or security key. Removing it forces a clean negotiation. On Android, open the saved device’s settings and tap Forget. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button beside the headphones and choose Forget This Device. In Windows, remove the headphones from Bluetooth settings before adding them again.
Forget the entry only on the host that is failing. This does not erase the headphones’ internal list, so a different phone or computer may still reconnect automatically.

Disconnect another phone, tablet or computer
Headphones often reconnect to the last device they used. Check nearby devices, turn off Bluetooth on them temporarily, or open their Bluetooth settings and disconnect the headphones. Sony’s troubleshooting flow specifically identifies an automatic connection to another device as a reason the intended host cannot connect.

If the headset supports multipoint, it may legitimately maintain more than one connection, but a new host can still be blocked by the model’s connection limits or by an active call. End calls, stop audio and disconnect the old host before starting a fresh pairing attempt.
Clear the headset’s stored device list only when directed
Some models provide a command to clear all remembered Bluetooth devices without a full factory initialization. Bose documents such a stored-list procedure for certain products. The button sequence varies, so use the instructions for your exact model rather than trying a generic combination.
5. Restart both sides and retry cleanly
Power-cycle the headphones
Turn the headphones off completely, wait at least a few seconds, then turn them on and enter pairing mode again. For earbuds, place both buds in the case, close it briefly, reopen it and use the case’s pairing control if the model specifies one. This clears a temporary radio or firmware state without deleting every saved device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRestart the host device
Restart the phone, tablet or computer after removing the stale pairing. A restart reloads Bluetooth services and can clear a scan that is stuck or a driver service that did not initialize correctly. After startup, enable Bluetooth, put the headphones into discovery mode and add them as a new device.
Reduce interference during the attempt
- Keep the headphones within arm’s reach of the host.
- Move away from wireless access points, USB 3 accessories, crowded workstations and large metal surfaces if discovery repeatedly fails.
- Turn off Bluetooth on unused nearby devices so they cannot capture the headphones first.
- Do not test from inside a bag, closed drawer or another enclosure that blocks the signal.
6. Use a second host to isolate the fault
Try pairing the headphones with another phone, tablet or computer. This is a diagnostic test, not a replacement solution.
| Result of the second-host test | Most likely focus | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Headphones pair with the second host | The original host’s saved Bluetooth data, software, driver or service | Forget the old entry, restart the host, install pending system updates and repeat the platform-specific pairing steps. |
| Headphones do not appear on either host | Pairing mode, battery, stored-device state or headphone hardware | Confirm the model’s discovery indication, clear its stored list if documented, then follow its reset guidance. |
| Headphones appear but fail to connect on both hosts | Authentication state, internal Bluetooth software or hardware | Perform the exact model-specific initialization procedure or contact the headphone manufacturer. |
| Only one earbud fails while the other works | Earbud synchronization, charging contact or model-specific pairing state | Charge both sides, reseat them in the case and use the manufacturer’s left/right synchronization instructions. |
If the headphones work elsewhere, investigate the original host rather than repeatedly resetting the headset. On Windows, Microsoft identifies configuration, driver, service, update and device-level problems as possible reasons Bluetooth appears in Device Manager but cannot complete pairing.

7. Reset or initialize the headphones safely
Understand what a reset changes
A reset may clear remembered devices and return Bluetooth settings to their factory state. Sony describes initialization as returning the headphones to factory settings and deleting Bluetooth pairing information. You will need to pair every host again afterward.

There is no universal Bluetooth-headphone reset button combination. The required timing may involve the power button, both earbud touch surfaces, the charging case or a sequence while connected to power. Search the official support instructions for the complete model name and regional edition before starting.
- Write down any custom settings or equalizer presets that may be lost.
- Disconnect the headphones from every host.
- Follow the model’s official initialization steps exactly, including hold duration and indicator timing.
- After the reset completes, restart the host and pair as if the headphones were new.
Do not keep repeating an unverified reset sequence. An incorrect sequence can leave earbuds out of sync or erase information without addressing the underlying fault.

When an iPhone or iPad cannot pair with any accessory
First test the headphones with another host. If they work elsewhere, forget the iOS or iPadOS entry, restart the Apple device and retry. If Bluetooth is unavailable, greyed out or no accessory connects even though the headphones work on other devices, Apple recommends contacting support after the basic checks.
When Android shows no “Pair new device” option
Open the full Bluetooth settings page rather than the quick panel. The menu may be under Connected devices, Connections or a manufacturer-specific heading. Confirm the device software version because Google’s current guidance flags some steps for Android 15 and later. If a saved entry remains, use Forget before scanning again.
When Windows sees the headphones but will not connect
Remove the device and add it again, then restart Windows. Install available Windows updates and check the computer manufacturer’s Bluetooth driver support. In Windows 11, open Get Help and run the Bluetooth troubleshooter. If Bluetooth appears in Device Manager but pairing still fails, the issue may be a configuration, driver or device-level communication problem rather than the headphones’ discovery mode.

When the problem is probably hardware
Escalate to the headphone manufacturer when all of the following are true:
- The headphones are charged and can power on reliably.
- The exact model’s pairing-mode procedure produces no discovery indicator or prompt.
- They do not appear or connect when tested with more than one host.
- The official reset or initialization procedure does not restore pairing.
For a host-side failure, contact the phone, tablet or computer manufacturer when Bluetooth is missing, disabled by a hardware switch, or unable to connect to any known-good accessory after updates and troubleshooting. Keep the model number, operating-system version and the result of the second-host test ready for support.
Quick decision checklist
- Headphones do not appear: charge them, enter discovery mode, move closer and disable Bluetooth on other nearby hosts.
- Headphones appear but fail to connect: forget the saved entry, restart both devices and pair again.
- They connect to another device: focus on the original host’s Bluetooth settings, updates, drivers or services.
- They connect elsewhere but immediately switch back: disconnect the previously paired phone or computer.
- No host can discover them: follow the exact model’s stored-list or initialization procedure, then seek manufacturer support if it still fails.
What not to do
- Do not assume a powered-on headset is in pairing mode.
- Do not use another model’s button sequence or reset instructions.
- Do not leave a previously paired phone connected while trying to pair a new host.
- Do not buy replacement headphones before testing the existing pair with a second host.
- Do not infer a hardware failure until charging, discovery mode, stale pairings and a model-specific reset have been checked.
Sources and version notes
This procedure follows official support guidance from Apple, Google Android, Microsoft, Sony and Bose. Sony’s general pairing troubleshooting article was last modified July 28, 2026; its WF-1000XM4 pairing instructions were last modified April 7, 2026 and apply only to that model. Microsoft’s cited troubleshooting guidance covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Android menu labels can change with the device maker and software version, and reset procedures remain model-specific.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Bluetooth headphones show up but not connect?
The saved pairing record may be stale, or the headphones may still be connected to another phone or computer. Forget the headphones on the failing host, disconnect other active hosts, restart both devices and pair again in discovery mode.
How do I put Bluetooth headphones into pairing mode?
Use the exact model’s instructions. Depending on the design, pairing may require holding a Bluetooth button, holding the power control, or pressing a button on the charging case until an indicator flashes or a voice prompt confirms discovery.
Should I reset my headphones if they will not pair?
Only after charging, discovery-mode checks, removal of stale pairings, restarts and a second-host test. Initialization procedures vary and usually delete all stored Bluetooth pairings, so follow the official instructions for the exact model.
How can I tell whether the phone or headphones are at fault?
Pair the headphones with another phone or computer. Success on the second host points to the original host’s settings, software or drivers; failure on multiple hosts points toward pairing-state, charging or headphone hardware issues.
