Most Android-tablet earbud failures are fixed by working through the connection in order: charge the earbuds, keep them close, turn on Bluetooth, place the earbuds in pairing mode, and choose them from the tablet’s Bluetooth menu. If the earbuds were paired before but will not reconnect, forget the saved entry, restart the tablet, and pair again. Reset the earbuds only with instructions written for that exact model.
The order matters because it starts with reversible checks and avoids erasing settings unnecessarily. A missing Fast Pair pop-up, a saved device that says “Not connected,” and earbuds that never appear in the scan are different symptoms, so use the matching procedure below.
First, identify whether you are pairing or reconnecting
Bluetooth uses two different actions that look similar but require different steps:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Pairing: adding earbuds that the tablet has never saved, or adding them after you forgot them. The earbuds must be discoverable in pairing mode.
- Reconnecting: opening a connection to earbuds that already appear in the tablet’s saved or paired-device list. They usually do not need to be put into pairing mode again; you select the saved device instead.
If the earbuds appear under saved devices but show “Not connected,” try reconnecting first. If they do not appear under available devices, use the pairing procedure. A failed Fast Pair notification does not prove that the earbuds are incompatible; manual pairing in Settings is the fallback.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Pairing creates a saved relationship between the tablet and earbuds. Reconnecting uses that saved relationship. Android’s guidance notes that devices stay paired until you explicitly unpair or forget them, even when they are not currently connected. That is why repeatedly choosing Pair new device can create confusion when the original entry is still present.
Run these checks before changing any settings
1. Charge the earbuds and case
Place both earbuds in their case, connect the case to power if its battery is low, and allow enough time for the earbuds to charge. Earbuds with depleted batteries may not enter pairing mode or may disappear from the tablet during setup. If the case has separate status lights, confirm that it indicates charging rather than an error state.
Check the case as well as the buds. Some models use the case battery to start pairing, and a case that is nearly empty may not respond to its pairing button. If one bud is not seated correctly, it may not charge or may remain asleep while the other bud is discoverable.

Put the open case and earbuds beside the tablet while pairing. A short distance removes one common cause of a missing or unstable discovery result. Once the connection works, you can test normal listening distance.
Keep the case open only as long as the model’s instructions require. If the earbuds leave pairing mode after a period of inactivity, start the scan immediately after activating pairing mode rather than waiting several minutes.
3. Turn Bluetooth on
Open the tablet’s Quick Settings panel and verify that Bluetooth is enabled. You can also open the full Bluetooth settings page so that the tablet actively displays available devices. If Bluetooth is already on but the list is stale, turn it off, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again before scanning.
Opening the full settings page is preferable to relying only on the Quick Settings tile because it exposes the saved-device and available-device lists. If Pair new device is not shown, look for Available devices, a scan or refresh control, or use Settings search for “Bluetooth.” Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android release.

4. Prevent another device from taking the connection
Earbuds may automatically reconnect to a phone, computer, television, or another tablet they know. Temporarily turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices, or disconnect the earbuds from those devices, before pairing with the Android tablet. This is especially important when the earbuds appear briefly and then vanish.
Do not assume that putting the phone in another room always releases the earbuds. If the phone remains within range, the earbuds may reconnect to it first. Disable Bluetooth on that source until the tablet has completed pairing, then turn it back on and confirm which device is connected.
Put the earbuds into pairing mode
Pairing mode is controlled by the earbud manufacturer, so the button, touch gesture, or case procedure differs by model. Use the model’s manual or support instructions and look for wording such as “pair,” “discoverable,” or “connect a new device.” Merely opening the case is not pairing mode on every product.
Common indicators include a flashing white or blue status light, a spoken pairing message, or a sound in both earbuds. If the light indicates an existing connection instead, disconnect the earbuds from the other source and repeat the model-specific pairing gesture.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Pairing mode is temporary on many models. Activate it immediately before scanning, and keep the case or earbuds positioned close to the tablet. If the indicator stops flashing before the tablet finds the device, repeat the procedure rather than changing unrelated tablet settings.
Pair the earbuds manually from Android Settings
Generic Android tablet procedure
- Open Settings.
- Open Connected devices, then Connection preferences, and choose Bluetooth. On some tablets, Bluetooth is a top-level Settings item.
- Turn Bluetooth on if it is off.
- Choose Pair new device. If that option is not visible, look for Available devices or a command to refresh the list.
- With the earbuds in pairing mode and near the tablet, select their name when it appears.
- Approve the pairing request. If Android asks for a PIN, use the code supplied in the earbud’s documentation; do not guess repeatedly.
- Wait for the status to change to Connected.
After pairing, Android saves the earbuds. Future connections normally use the saved entry rather than Pair new device.
If the name appears twice, wait for the scan to finish and choose the entry that matches the model’s documented name. Avoid accepting repeated requests while the earbuds are connected elsewhere; first disconnect the other source, then restart pairing mode.
Pixel Tablet and newer Android menu labels
Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions use Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth, followed by Pair new device. The exact labels can differ on tablets from other manufacturers and on different Android releases. If your menu does not match, use the Settings search field for “Bluetooth” or “pair new device,” then open the tablet maker’s help page for its interface.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteSome generic Android instructions depend on Android 15 or later and supporting hardware. That does not mean Bluetooth pairing is unavailable on every earlier tablet; it means a particular control or instruction may not exist. Match the steps to the tablet’s software rather than forcing a menu path that is not present.
Use Fast Pair when it is available, but do not depend on it
Fast Pair is an optional Android feature for supported accessories. It can show a pairing notification near the tablet, but the notification will not appear for every earbud or every software configuration.
For Google’s Pixel Tablet guide, Fast Pair requires Android 6.0 or later, Bluetooth enabled, and Location enabled. Turn those services on before bringing supported earbuds close to the tablet. When a notification appears, accept it and follow the on-screen steps.
If no notification appears, open Connected devices and pair manually as described above. A missing Fast Pair pop-up is not, by itself, evidence that the earbuds cannot work with the tablet. Fast Pair behavior and menu wording can vary by Android version, tablet manufacturer, and accessory support.
Fast Pair and ordinary Bluetooth pairing are alternative setup routes, not two stages that must both succeed. If the notification disappears, dismisses itself, or never arrives, leave Bluetooth and Location enabled and proceed directly to the device list. Manual pairing does not require a Fast Pair pop-up.
Reconnect earbuds that are already saved
If the earbuds are listed under paired or saved devices, do not add another copy immediately. Turn Bluetooth on, open the saved-device list, and tap the earbuds’ name. Android should show Connected when the link is established.
If the earbuds are in the case, remove them or open the case according to the model’s normal wake-up procedure. Keep them close and make sure they are not actively connected to another source. If tapping the saved entry does nothing, continue to forgetting and re-pairing rather than repeatedly tapping it.

After the status changes to Connected, play a short audio clip to verify that the tablet is using the earbuds rather than its own speakers. If the connection succeeds but audio remains on the tablet, open the tablet’s audio-output selector and choose the connected earbuds; this checks the result without altering the saved pairing.
Forget the old entry and pair again
A saved Bluetooth record can become stale after a tablet update, an earbud reset, or pairing with another device. Removing that record forces Android and the earbuds to negotiate a fresh connection.
- Open Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth, or the equivalent Bluetooth page on your tablet.
- Find the earbuds under saved or paired devices.
- Open the entry’s settings, often represented by a gear icon or an information button.
- Choose Forget, Unpair, or Remove, then confirm. The label depends on the Android build.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, or restart the tablet if the old name remains visible.
- Place the earbuds in pairing mode again.
- Return to Pair new device and select the earbuds as a new accessory.
If the first retry fails, restart the tablet before attempting the pairing sequence again. A restart clears temporary Bluetooth processes without deleting your other tablet data.
Forgetting affects the tablet’s saved relationship; it does not replace the earbud manufacturer’s reset procedure. If the earbuds still advertise an old connection after you forget them, put them into the exact model’s pairing mode or reset them only as described in the next section.
Reset the earbuds only with model-specific instructions
A reset can clear earbud-side pairing information, but there is no universal button timing. The wrong procedure can leave the earbuds out of pairing mode or alter settings without fixing the underlying problem. Find the instructions for the exact model and hardware revision before resetting.

Example: Pixel Buds pairing and reset controls
Google’s Pixel Buds procedure places both buds in the open case and uses the case’s pairing button. Holding that button for three seconds enters pairing mode. Google also documents longer reset sequences for particular Pixel Buds configurations. Those timings are specific to the relevant Pixel Buds models and should not be applied to another brand or model.
After a successful model-specific reset, repeat the Android pairing steps from the beginning. A reset may erase saved connections, so previously paired phones and tablets may need to be paired again.
Do not press and hold buttons for an arbitrary length of time because another model may use the same button for a different function. Confirm whether the manufacturer distinguishes pairing, reset, and power controls, and whether both earbuds must be seated in the case before starting.
Improve an unstable connection after pairing
Check earbud firmware when the problem is specific to Pixel Buds
For Pixel Buds that pair but disconnect or connect unreliably, Google recommends checking whether the earbuds have current firmware. Use Google’s Pixel Buds support instructions for the update path and the status information available for your model.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Firmware checking is most useful after the tablet can pair but the connection repeatedly drops. It is not a substitute for charging or pairing mode, and update controls differ by model. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions rather than installing firmware intended for a different generation.
Move away from possible 2.4 GHz interference
Pixel Buds support guidance also recommends moving away from nearby devices that can interfere in the 2.4 GHz band, including Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers, and microwave ovens. Test with the tablet and earbuds in another room or away from those sources. If the connection becomes stable, reduce the distance from the tablet only after identifying which nearby device or location causes the problem.

This interference advice is documented for Pixel Buds. Other earbuds can behave differently, so use their manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance when the symptom continues.
Run the interference test with the tablet and earbuds close together, then change only the surrounding location. That helps distinguish a radio-environment problem from a low battery, stale pairing record, or incompatible software version.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| What you see | Most useful next action | What success looks like |
|---|---|---|
| The earbuds never appear in the list | Charge them, move them close, disable nearby source devices, and enter the model’s pairing mode before refreshing Available devices. | The earbud name appears under available devices. |
| The earbuds appear, but tapping them fails | Forget any old saved entry, restart the tablet, re-enter pairing mode, and try Pair new device again. | Android accepts the request and shows Connected. |
| The earbuds are saved but show “Not connected” | Tap the saved entry with Bluetooth on. If that fails, forget and re-pair. | The saved entry changes to Connected without creating a duplicate. |
| A Fast Pair prompt does not appear | Confirm Bluetooth and Location are enabled, then use manual pairing in Settings. | The earbuds pair through the Bluetooth device list. |
| The earbuds connect, then drop out | Check charge, update firmware where the manufacturer supports it, and test away from nearby 2.4 GHz sources. | Audio remains connected while the tablet and earbuds stay near one another. |
| Only one earbud works | Follow the exact model’s earbud synchronization or reset procedure before changing tablet settings. | Both buds report the same connection and play audio. |
If the symptom changes after a step, stop repeating earlier steps and follow the new symptom’s row. For example, earbuds that begin appearing after charging have reached discovery; earbuds that appear but will not connect need a clean saved record or model-specific reset, not more scanning.
Check the tablet’s Android version and interface
Android Bluetooth menus are not identical across manufacturers. Some generic Android instructions depend on Android 15 or later and compatible hardware. Google’s Pixel Tablet guide describes certain steps for Android 14 and later. A tablet running an older release may use different labels or omit a particular Fast Pair control.
Open Settings > About tablet (or search Settings for “Android version”) to identify the software release. Then use instructions that match that release and the tablet manufacturer. If you cannot find Connection preferences, search Settings for Bluetooth rather than assuming the feature is missing.
Interface differences do not automatically indicate a hardware fault. Look for equivalent terms such as Paired devices, Available devices, Scan, Unpair, or Forget. If the manufacturer’s help page gives a different path, use that path for the tablet’s exact Android build.
Separate compatibility problems from pairing problems
Bluetooth earbuds are not guaranteed to behave identically with every Android tablet. The available guidance does not establish one universal compatibility matrix for unspecified tablet and earbud models. Compatibility can depend on the tablet’s Android version, Bluetooth hardware, supported profiles, and accessory firmware.
If the earbuds remain absent after they are charged, placed in pairing mode, brought close, and disconnected from other sources, check both manufacturers’ compatibility and troubleshooting documentation. Do not infer incompatibility merely because Fast Pair failed; manual pairing is a separate path.
To isolate the failing side, try the earbuds with another known-compatible device and try a different Bluetooth accessory with the tablet. A set that pairs elsewhere but not with the tablet points toward tablet software, settings, or compatibility. Several accessories that fail on the same tablet point toward the tablet’s Bluetooth service or hardware. Keep these tests temporary and return the devices to their normal connections afterward.
Record the exact tablet model, Android version, earbud model, and whether the earbuds appear during scanning. Those details make the manufacturer’s support instructions more precise and prevent applying a reset sequence meant for a different product.
When a replacement is reasonable
Replacement should be the final option, not the first response to a missing pop-up. Consider replacing the earbuds only after charging, pairing-mode checks, manual pairing, forgetting and re-pairing, and the model-specific reset have all failed. Before buying, verify that the replacement supports the tablet’s Android version and that its manufacturer publishes pairing and reset instructions for the model.

Do not assume that a newer or more expensive set will solve a tablet-side Bluetooth fault. If multiple known-good accessories cannot pair with the tablet, troubleshoot or service the tablet instead.
If you do replace the earbuds, compare compatibility information, supported pairing features, and the availability of model-specific reset documentation. Treat Fast Pair as a convenience rather than a requirement; a supported replacement should still have a documented manual Bluetooth setup path.
Final checklist
- Earbuds and case have charge.
- Earbuds are beside the tablet.
- Bluetooth is on, and nearby phones or computers are not holding the connection.
- The earbuds are in the model’s actual pairing mode.
- You tried Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Bluetooth > Pair new device, or the equivalent path on your tablet.
- You enabled Location for Fast Pair, while remembering that manual pairing works without a Fast Pair notification.
- You tapped the saved entry when reconnecting a previously paired set.
- You forgot the old entry and restarted the tablet when reconnection failed.
- You used only the reset procedure written for the exact earbud model.
- You checked firmware and 2.4 GHz interference when the issue is an unstable Pixel Buds connection.
- You checked both manufacturers’ compatibility guidance if the earbuds never appear.
Work through the checklist in that order. It starts with reversible conditions and ends with model-specific resets, compatibility checks, and possible hardware faults.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Bluetooth earbuds appear as saved but not connected?
Turn Bluetooth on and tap the saved earbud entry. If it does not connect, forget or unpair that entry, restart the tablet, put the earbuds into their model-specific pairing mode, and add them again through Pair new device.
Do I need Fast Pair to connect earbuds to an Android tablet?
No. Fast Pair is optional and works only with supported accessories. If its notification does not appear, enable Bluetooth and Location if you want to test Fast Pair, then pair manually from Settings > Connected devices > Bluetooth.
What Android versions support Fast Pair on a Pixel Tablet?
Google’s Pixel Tablet instructions list Android 6.0 or later, Bluetooth enabled, and Location enabled as Fast Pair prerequisites. Menu behavior can still vary by tablet, Android release, and accessory.
Why are my earbuds missing from Available devices?
Charge the earbuds and case, keep them close, disable Bluetooth on nearby phones or computers, and activate the exact model’s pairing mode. Refresh the list or reopen Bluetooth settings. If they still do not appear, check both manufacturers’ compatibility guidance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Should I reset earbuds that will not connect?
Only after charging, pairing-mode checks, manual pairing, and forgetting the old entry have failed. Use the reset instructions for the exact earbud model; button timing is not universal. Pixel Buds, for example, use model-specific case-button procedures.
What should I do if earbuds connect and then disconnect?
Check charge, confirm the tablet and earbuds stay close, check current firmware where the manufacturer supports it, and test away from possible 2.4 GHz interference such as Wi-Fi routers, wireless speakers, and microwave ovens. The interference guidance is specifically documented for Pixel Buds.
The Bottom Line
Start with charge, distance, Bluetooth, and the earbuds’ real pairing mode. Reconnect from the saved-device list when possible; otherwise forget the stale entry, restart the tablet, and pair manually. Fast Pair is convenient but optional. Reset only with instructions for the exact model, and check firmware, interference, Android-version differences, and compatibility before considering replacement.
