Most MOMENTUM 5 Bluetooth problems are fixed without replacing the headphones: switch the headset on, stay within its normal range, delete the old Bluetooth record, put both devices into pairing mode, and pair again. For intermittent dropouts in a busy radio environment, disable HiRes or Lossless audio in Smart Control Plus. If two devices are paired, understand that MOMENTUM 5 automatically follows active playback, notifications, or calls; manual Windows switching is handled from the phone app. Update firmware before performing a factory reset, and contact Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support if the documented sequence does not solve the fault.
First, identify which Bluetooth problem you have
Different symptoms point to different fixes. Use this table to start with the least destructive remedy.

Why MOMENTUM 5 disconnects
Range and obstructions
The instruction manual describes a typical free-line-of-sight Bluetooth range of up to 10 metres. Walls, furniture, a body between the headset and source, and moving out of that range can weaken the link. The manual says sound quality deteriorates as you leave range, followed by a “Lost connection” voice prompt and a complete break. Returning to range should trigger automatic reconnection.
Ten metres is a typical maximum, not a guaranteed distance through walls or in every building. Test the headphones beside the source before changing settings; this separates a coverage problem from a pairing or hardware problem.

Radio congestion and codec demand
Busy offices, apartments, airports, gyms, and classrooms can contain many Bluetooth and Wi-Fi transmitters. Sennheiser’s support guidance specifically says not to use HiRes or Lossless audio in a crowded environment and to change that setting in the app to avoid interference from other Bluetooth devices. Treat this as a targeted mitigation, not a promise that every dropout will disappear.
If the connection remains unstable in a quiet room at close range, continue with firmware and reset steps rather than repeatedly changing codecs.
Power state
MOMENTUM 5 does not automatically switch on in the same way as MOMENTUM 4. Confirm that the headset is actually powered on before searching for it or assuming that a phone has failed. A powered-off headset cannot enter pairing mode or reconnect.

Step-by-step: fix a MOMENTUM 5 that keeps disconnecting
1. Check power, range, and the source
- Switch MOMENTUM 5 on manually.
- Place the headphones and source in the same room, ideally with clear line of sight and no more than a few metres between them.
- Pause other Bluetooth accessories temporarily. This is a diagnostic step, not a required permanent setup.
- Check whether the source is still connected to another headset, speaker, car system, or adapter. Disconnect that device if the source is sending audio elsewhere.
- Play audio for several minutes at this short distance. If it is stable, gradually return to your normal position to find the range or obstruction that triggers the failure.
When you leave range, the manual says you may hear “Lost connection.” After returning within range, MOMENTUM 5 should reconnect automatically. If it does not, proceed to rebuild the pairing record.

2. Rebuild the Bluetooth pairing record
A saved record can contain outdated keys or profiles after a phone, computer, operating-system, or headphone update. Delete it instead of repeatedly selecting the same failed entry.
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and remove or forget the existing MOMENTUM 5 entry.
- Put MOMENTUM 5 into pairing mode.
- Put the phone, tablet, or computer into Bluetooth discovery or pairing mode.
- Wait for MOMENTUM 5 to appear as a new device, select it, and complete pairing.
- Play audio and make a test call before adding a second device.
For a second device, hold the MOMENTUM 5 power button for five seconds until the pairing prompt, then search from that device. MOMENTUM 5 supports two-device multipoint, so pairing a second source is supported; pairing more than two sources is not the documented default.
3. Reduce radio and codec pressure
- Open Smart Control Plus while the headphones are connected.
- Find the audio-quality option for HiRes or Lossless playback.
- Turn HiRes or Lossless off when you are in a crowded radio environment.
- Retest in the same location and with the same source.
Sennheiser’s support wording is specific: “If you are in a crowded environment, do not use HiRes or Lossless audio (adjust the setting in the app) to avoid interference from other Bluetooth devices.” This setting change is free and reversible. It does not repair a damaged radio, bad firmware, or a source that is losing its own Bluetooth connection.
Why won’t my MOMENTUM 5 pair?
Use pairing mode on both sides
Pairing mode is required on the headphones and on the source. Simply opening the source’s Bluetooth page is not enough if MOMENTUM 5 is still connected to another device or is not advertising itself.

- Switch the headphones on.
- Hold the power button for five seconds when you need to add or pair a device, and wait for the pairing prompt.
- On the source, enable Bluetooth and open its add-device or discovery screen.
- Forget any previous MOMENTUM 5 entry before selecting the newly discovered device.
- Accept the pairing request and wait for the connected status.
If the old entry remains on the source, remove it again and repeat the sequence. Do not create several similarly named records; one clean record is easier to diagnose.
When a computer fails but a phone succeeds
Pair MOMENTUM 5 with a phone at close range first. If the phone works but the computer does not, the headset’s radio is at least responding, so focus on the computer’s Bluetooth state: remove its old record, restart Bluetooth, and pair again. Keep the successful phone pairing available as a control test, but do not add a second source until the first connection is stable.
Source compatibility and optional aptX
Sennheiser says its BTD 700 Bluetooth adapter can pair with MOMENTUM 5 and enable aptX when the source lacks aptX support. This is an optional source-compatibility accessory, not a universal dropout cure. Consider it only after ordinary pairing, range, interference, firmware, and reset checks have been completed. It cannot correct a defective headphone radio or a source that is failing for unrelated reasons.

How two-device multipoint decides
With two devices paired, MOMENTUM 5 can maintain multipoint connections. Sennheiser states that audio switches automatically according to which device is actively playing audio or has notifications or calls active. A silent phone can therefore take priority when a call or notification arrives, while a computer can regain audio when playback starts.

This behavior is automatic by design. It is not evidence that the headphones have forgotten the other device.
Stop unwanted switching
- Pause media on the device you do not want to hear.
- End calls before starting playback on the preferred device.
- Reduce or disable nonessential notification sounds on the competing device.
- For a clean test, forget the second device temporarily, verify the first, then pair the second again.
Manual Windows switching
If Windows will not switch when you expect it to, Sennheiser’s guidance is to use Smart Control Plus on a phone for manual switching. The phone app is the documented control point; repeatedly clicking the Windows Bluetooth list may not change the active multipoint source.
Update firmware before a full reset
The MOMENTUM 5 manual recommends keeping the product on the latest firmware for best performance. Connect the headphones to Smart Control Plus and install any offered firmware update before erasing all settings. Keep the headphones powered and close to the phone during the update; do not interrupt it by leaving Bluetooth range or closing the app.

Reset MOMENTUM 5 in the correct order
Normal reset: preserve pairing settings
A normal reset uses a 20-second button hold and preserves pairing settings. Use it when the headset is behaving abnormally but you do not want to erase every saved device.
- Ensure the headphones are switched on.
- Hold the required button combination or control for 20 seconds, following the MOMENTUM 5 manual’s reset instruction.
- Release after the full interval, allow the headset to restart, and test the existing pairing.
Do not release early and assume a brief press performed a reset. If stored records themselves appear damaged, delete the Bluetooth pairing list in Smart Control Plus and pair again.
Factory default settings: erase and rebuild
Use the Smart Control Plus app’s “Factory default settings” function only after updating firmware and trying the normal reset. A factory reset is more disruptive: it removes configured settings and requires you to pair the sources again.
- Open Smart Control Plus with MOMENTUM 5 connected.
- Choose the app option labeled “Factory default settings.”
- Confirm the reset and wait for the headphones to restart.
- On every phone or computer that previously stored MOMENTUM 5, forget the old Bluetooth entry.
- Pair one source from scratch, test it, and then add the second source if you need multipoint.
This order—firmware update, normal reset, then factory default settings—reduces unnecessary data loss while following the manufacturer’s documented recovery path.

When to stop troubleshooting and contact support
Contact Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support when MOMENTUM 5 still will not pair with a clean source after deleting old records, or when it repeatedly drops at close range in a quiet environment after the firmware, reset, and factory-default sequence. Include the source model, operating system, distance, whether one or two devices were paired, and whether disabling HiRes or Lossless changed anything. Those details distinguish a source, environment, configuration, and hardware fault.
The manual identifies the BA 500 as the compatible replaceable battery. Availability is limited to the EU and selected countries, and replacement uses a PH0 Phillips screwdriver. Do not open the headset merely to solve a pairing problem; battery or internal work belongs in the escalation stage unless you are equipped to follow the manual safely.
There is no published failure-rate study or controlled dropout percentage in the official materials. A single dropout does not establish a defect, while repeatable failures under controlled, close-range conditions justify service evaluation.

- If two devices are paired, stop competing playback, calls, and notifications; use the phone app for manual Windows switching.
- Update firmware through Smart Control Plus.
- Perform the 20-second normal reset.
- If necessary, choose “Factory default settings,” then rebuild the pairings.
- Escalate to Sennheiser/Sonova Consumer Hearing support if the fault remains.
