To reduce a halo around subtitles on a Mini-LED TV, open the picture controls while the affected movie or show is playing, find Local Dimming, Auto Local Dimming, Local Contrast, or an equivalent control, and compare its available levels on the same dark scene. Change one setting at a time and judge both the halo and the rest of the picture. There is no universal “set it to High” or “set it to Low” answer: the useful level depends on the TV model, picture mode, input, content format, and the exact symptom.
What blooming around subtitles actually is
A Mini-LED television uses many small LEDs behind an LCD panel. Local-dimming software divides those LEDs into zones and raises or lowers each zone’s brightness according to the light and dark areas in the scene. A subtitle is bright, but it is much smaller than a typical backlight zone. When the zone behind the letters is raised to make the text bright, some of the surrounding dark area can become visible as a glow or halo.
This is a zone-control interaction between bright text, a dark scene and the LCD’s backlight. It does not automatically mean the panel is defective. The same television can show little blooming in one scene and obvious blooming in another, depending on subtitle size, placement, nearby highlights and the picture mode. Other small bright objects—stars, streetlights or white interface icons—can produce a similar effect.

Local dimming cannot shape the backlight around every individual character. A higher zone count and better algorithms can reduce the visibility, but no setting should be described as a guaranteed elimination of halos. Your goal is the best balance for the content you watch.

First, identify the pattern and your exact TV setup
Before changing anything, establish when the glow appears. This prevents you from treating normal zone behavior as a hardware fault or adjusting a control that is unrelated to the problem.
Use these checks
- Dark scenes only: note whether the halo disappears in bright or mixed scenes.
- Subtitles only or every highlight: check a small white object, such as a star or menu icon, as well as text.
- One source or all sources: compare a built-in streaming app, an HDMI device and the TV’s own menus if possible.
- One picture mode or several: movie, standard, game, HDR and Dolby Vision modes can store separate settings.
- Consistent location: a glow that follows subtitle text is different from a fixed bright patch, clouding or a line that remains when no bright object is present.
Write down the complete model number, the current picture mode, whether the program is SDR or HDR, and whether playback comes from an app or an HDMI input. Menu names and available controls can vary by model, region, input, picture mode and software version.
Find the control that governs the backlight zones
Open the TV’s picture or brightness settings while the affected content is playing. Search for one of these labels:

- A model-specific equivalent under advanced picture settings
Some televisions provide Off, Low, Medium and High; others use a different scale or hide the option in certain modes. A Mini-LED set may expose a separate Peak Luminance control. TCL describes Local Contrast as an area-based adjustment of backlight and signal contrast, while Peak Luminance affects the maximum brightness of local-dimming areas. Those controls can change the appearance of subtitles, but they are not interchangeable with ordinary panel brightness.
If you cannot find a local-dimming option, do not assume the set lacks the feature or is broken. The control may be unavailable for the current input or picture mode, or your model may manage it automatically. Check the model’s manual or manufacturer support page for the exact menu path.
Compare settings on one repeatable scene
Randomly switching between scenes makes blooming difficult to judge. Use a short dark sequence with white subtitles and repeat the comparison after each change.

- Pause or replay the same subtitle line in a dark scene. Keep viewing distance, room lighting and TV position unchanged.
- Record the current local-dimming level and picture mode so you can return to it.
- Change only the local-dimming control by one step. Do not alter backlight brightness, contrast, gamma and color at the same time.
- Watch the subtitle edge, the dark area immediately around it and any nearby highlight for several seconds.
- Check shadow detail elsewhere in the frame. A setting that hides a halo by crushing dark tones may remove details you still want to see.
- Check overall brightness and highlight behavior. A lower level can make bright objects less forceful; a higher level can make the zone transition more visible.
- Repeat the comparison with another dark scene and, if relevant, with the same title in HDR and SDR.

Keep the level that gives the best overall image, not merely the smallest halo in one frame. A secondary how-to guide recommends this same-scene comparison method; treat it as a testing technique, not as a universal preset.
When a higher level is the right experiment
A high local-dimming level can make dark parts darker while preserving a strong peak for bright text. That can improve perceived contrast, but it can also make zone transitions or a bright subtitle’s surrounding area more conspicuous on some panels. Test High, Medium and Low rather than assuming the highest value is automatically best.
Model-specific example: Sony BRAVIA 9 II
Sony’s USA support article for the applicable BRAVIA 9 II product K-65XR90M2 advises setting Auto Local Dimming to High when bright objects “such as subtitles” appear on a dark background. In a dark viewing environment, the same article recommends enabling Auto luminance level. This is advice for that model and symptom; it should not be generalized to every Sony television or another brand.
The Sony support article gives a different recommendation—Low or Off—for a different symptom involving a bright subject on a flat, vivid background. That distinction matters: the correct setting depends on what you are seeing, not just on the word “blooming.” Follow the instructions for your exact model if the manufacturer provides them.

Reducing local dimming can soften aggressive zone changes and may make a halo less prominent in some scenes. The trade-off is reduced contrast: blacks may look lighter, the entire image may lose impact, and highlight separation can change. Off can be a useful diagnostic setting, but it is rarely a sensible permanent choice if you bought the TV for Mini-LED contrast.

Compare Low or Off only after checking whether the apparent improvement comes from the whole picture becoming gray or washed out. If shadow detail, black level and subtitle readability are all acceptable, the lower level may suit your room and viewing habits. If not, return to Medium or High and accept some zone behavior as the better compromise.
Account for picture mode, HDR and the input source
Televisions often save picture settings separately for each mode and input. A change made while watching a built-in app may not affect a game console, set-top box or disc player. HDR playback can also invoke a separate picture mode from SDR playback.
- Make the adjustment while the affected program is actively playing, not only from the home screen.
- Check the mode shown on screen—such as Movie, Standard, Game, HDR or Dolby Vision—before and after changing sources.
- Repeat the same-scene test for the app or HDMI input where you notice the halo.
- If a setting is missing, consult the manual for that mode; some controls are locked or renamed by the manufacturer.
Roku documents Local Dimming on supported Roku TV systems through the advanced picture settings available during playback, with Off, Low, Medium and High options. It also notes that the feature is not available on every Roku TV model. Use the path and labels shown by your own television rather than assuming every Roku interface is identical.

Blooming is easier to notice in a completely dark room because your eyes are more sensitive to a small change around bright text. A little indirect ambient light can make a subtle halo less distracting without changing the TV’s processing. Keep the light behind or beside the viewing position rather than shining directly on the screen, which can add reflections and reduce perceived contrast.
Viewing angle also matters on LCD-based displays. Evaluate the setting from your normal seat, at the distance you use for movies. Do not tune the TV while standing off-axis and then judge it from the sofa; the apparent width and intensity of a halo can change with angle.
Distinguish normal blooming from an abnormal panel problem
Zone-based blooming is most plausible when the glow follows a bright subtitle or other small highlight and changes as the object moves. It is less typical when a bright patch remains in the same screen location with no bright content, appears in menus or a blank input, or is visible in every scene regardless of contrast.

Signs that call for model-specific support
- A fixed bright area, vertical band or patch that does not track subtitles.
- New behavior that appeared after a physical impact, liquid exposure or other hardware event.
- Severe non-uniformity visible on the TV’s own menus or a no-signal screen.
- Settings that do not persist, disappear unexpectedly or behave differently from the manual.
Use the manufacturer’s support page and the manual for the exact model before arranging service. The available evidence does not establish a universal firmware update, calibration device, replacement remote or backlight part as a fix for ordinary subtitle blooming. Do not open the television: the symptom can be normal local-dimming behavior, and internal repair requires appropriate service expertise.
Brand and control differences you should expect

The table summarizes documented examples, not a cross-brand preset. Even two televisions with the same control name can produce different results because their zone layout, panel characteristics and processing differ.

If the halo is visible only around subtitles in dark scenes
Start with Local Dimming or its equivalent. Compare the available levels on the same scene, then keep the level that preserves shadow detail and acceptable highlights. Check the exact model’s support guidance; the BRAVIA 9 II example above favors High for this symptom.
If every bright object produces a broad glow
Repeat the test with stars, lamps and interface icons. Compare modes and inputs. If lowering local dimming improves the appearance without destroying contrast, use the lower level for that mode; otherwise the behavior may be an inherent limitation of the panel’s zone size.
If the entire picture looks gray after reducing the halo
You have probably traded contrast for less noticeable zone transitions. Restore the previous level and try a middle setting, then evaluate in your normal room lighting.
If the glow is fixed in one place
Test a blank input or the TV menu. A stationary patch that remains without bright content is not explained well by subtitle blooming alone, so contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider with the model number and observations.

If the setting works in one app but not another
Check whether the apps use different HDR or picture modes. Reapply the adjustment during the affected playback mode and consult the manual for per-input settings.
What not to do
- Do not copy a setting from a different model and expect the same result.
- Do not change several picture controls simultaneously; you will not know which adjustment helped.
- Do not judge from a single paused frame or a test pattern alone; subtitles vary in size, position and brightness.
- Do not assume that every halo is a defect or that a firmware update will universally remove it.
- Do not open the TV or buy a hardware accessory merely because subtitles illuminate a backlight zone.
Recommended final setup
After testing, document the chosen level separately for each affected input and picture mode. Recheck one dark subtitle scene and one ordinary bright scene. The final setting should keep text readable, retain shadow detail, preserve highlights you care about and avoid a distracting halo from your normal seat. If no level provides an acceptable balance, the limitation is likely tied to the TV’s local-dimming design or the particular content; model-specific support is the appropriate next step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is blooming around subtitles on a Mini-LED TV always a defect?
No. Bright text can illuminate a larger backlight zone than the letters themselves, making a halo visible around subtitles. A fixed bright patch that remains without bright content is a different symptom and deserves model-specific support.
Should I set Local Dimming to High or Low?
There is no universal answer. Compare levels on the same dark subtitle scene and inspect halo visibility, shadow detail, brightness and consistency. Sony’s advice for the applicable BRAVIA 9 II K-65XR90M2 is High for bright objects such as subtitles on a dark background, but that recommendation is model-specific.
Why can’t I find Local Dimming in my TV menu?
The feature may be unavailable on your model or hidden or renamed for the current input, picture mode or software version. Look for Local Contrast or a similar control and check the exact model’s manual.
Will turning local dimming Off remove blooming?
It may reduce zone transitions, but it also lowers contrast and can make blacks look lighter. Use Off as a comparison, then choose the level that gives the best overall picture.
Do HDR and SDR need separate adjustments?
Often they do. TVs can store settings by picture mode and input, and HDR playback may use a different mode. Make the change while the affected content is playing and verify it on each source.
