A classic Steam game that shows a black screen, crashes at “Preparing to Launch,” or runs without sound usually needs a compatibility fix rather than a reinstall. Work through the problem in this order: verify the installation, update Windows and the graphics driver, repair legacy runtimes, remove overlays and security-software interference, reset display settings, then test one launch option at a time. Audio needs its own checks for the mixer, output device, drivers, USB hardware, and surround mode. On Linux or Steam Deck, the decisive variable is often the Steam Play/Proton version used by that particular title.
Start by identifying the failure
Write down exactly what happens and where it stops. “Black screen” can mean a blank display with sound, a frozen first frame, or a monitor that loses its signal; each points to a different branch. A crash immediately after Steam says “Preparing to Launch” is usually an executable, runtime, driver, permissions, or compatibility problem. A game that reaches its menu but has no sound is normally an output, mixer, driver, or surround-configuration issue.
- Blank or black display: concentrate on video mode, fullscreen state, shader cache, GPU selection, and DirectX compatibility.
- Immediate crash or launch failure: concentrate on file integrity, Visual C++, .NET, DirectX, OpenAL, XNA, PhysX, drivers, permissions, and overlays.
- Game runs with no audio: troubleshoot Windows’ per-application mixer, the selected output, audio drivers, USB devices, and speaker configuration separately from graphics.
- Linux or Steam Deck failure: confirm platform support and test another Proton compatibility tool; behavior is title-specific.
Before changing anything, note the game version, operating system, CPU, GPU, available VRAM, monitor and cable, driver version, security software, and the repeatable steps that trigger the failure. Change one item at a time so you know which action helped.

Check platform support and system requirements
Open the game’s Steam store page and read the listed operating-system and hardware requirements. A title built for an older version of Windows may depend on assumptions about graphics APIs, audio devices, or system components that no longer hold on a current installation. Meeting a game’s minimum specification does not guarantee that its original display mode or runtime will work unchanged on a modern system.

Linux users should check whether the title has native Linux support or is expected to run through Steam Play. Windows-only games can work through Steam Play, but the result depends on the game and the compatibility tool selected. Steam Deck behavior is likewise title-specific; a fix for one game is not evidence that the same Proton version will solve another.
Repair the Steam installation first
Verify the downloaded files
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
Steam compares local checksums with the files in its server manifest and downloads replacements for missing or corrupted content. This repairs a damaged download, but it does not correct every compatibility problem. A few local configuration files may legitimately fail verification because they are created or changed on your computer; that result alone is not proof that the installation is still broken.
Reset only after verification
If the game still fails, close it and Steam before deleting or renaming a configuration folder or shader cache. Keep a backup of save files and custom settings first. A reset is useful when an old resolution, refresh rate, renderer choice, or shader compilation cache is incompatible with the current display, but it also removes settings you may want to preserve.

Install current system updates
Apply pending Windows updates and restart. Classic games often rely on system libraries that are supplied or serviced through Windows, and a partially updated system can behave differently from a fully patched one.
Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver for the GPU in the computer. If a normal update leaves the same crash or blank screen, perform a clean driver installation. A clean installation can remove obsolete DLLs and driver profiles that continue to affect an older game after several upgrades.

Choose the high-performance GPU on laptops
Dual-GPU laptops can launch a game on the integrated adapter while the display is connected to the discrete GPU, or apply a profile that the old executable does not handle correctly. In the graphics settings for your operating system or driver, assign the game’s executable to the high-performance GPU, then relaunch it. If the problem appears only on battery power, test while connected to AC power as well.
Return unusual driver profiles to defaults
Temporarily disable forced anti-aliasing, custom scaling, frame limits, sharpening, compatibility flags, and per-game overrides. Those settings may be harmless for a current title but incompatible with an older renderer. Re-enable them one at a time after the game is stable.

Valve notes that many games and applications require shared components to be installed before they can run successfully. Steam’s common redistributables include Microsoft Visual C++, .NET, DirectX 9, OpenAL, XNA, and PhysX. A current DirectX installation does not necessarily provide every older component an archived game expects, and installing one runtime does not replace the others.
- Visual C++: repair or install the Visual C++ packages included with the game or Steam’s common redistributables. An executable may require a particular generation even when newer packages are present.
- .NET: enable or repair the .NET version requested by the title or its launcher. Do not assume the newest .NET release is a drop-in replacement for an older framework.
- DirectX 9: install the legacy components supplied with the game when a DirectX-era title crashes before rendering. This can coexist with newer DirectX versions.
- OpenAL: repair it when the game starts without sound, fails during audio initialization, or exits immediately after the first splash screen.
- XNA: check it for games built with Microsoft XNA; missing framework files can produce an apparently unrelated launch crash.
- PhysX: install or repair the version expected by a title that uses PhysX effects. A newer driver package may not include every legacy runtime file.
Use the installer shipped in the game’s installation directory or Steam’s shared redistributable packages when available. Restart after repairs, then test before making another change.
Remove software and permission interference
Close overlays and heavy background applications
Turn off Steam’s in-game overlay for the title while testing, and close other overlays, recording tools, hardware monitors, RGB utilities, browsers with many tabs, and other resource-heavy applications. An overlay hook can conflict with an old DirectX or OpenGL implementation even when the game itself is undamaged.

Check security software
Security software can quarantine or block an older executable, DLL, launcher, or anti-cheat component. Review its event history and add an exclusion only for a file or folder you trust. Do not disable protection permanently. If the executable was quarantined, restore it from the security product’s interface and verify the game files again.
Use administrator rights only as a test
Right-click Steam or the game executable and test Run as administrator when the game cannot write its configuration, save, or shader files. If this works, identify the blocked folder or permission instead of leaving every game elevated. Running as administrator changes the security boundary and can create new ownership problems for files written during the test.
Fix a black or blank screen
Try a windowed display mode
A mode switch is the quickest way to separate a rendering problem from a game-process crash. In the game’s video settings, choose windowed or borderless mode if you can reach the menu. If the screen goes black before the menu, use a documented Steam launch option for windowed mode. Once the game displays correctly, select a conservative resolution and refresh rate, then test fullscreen again.
Reset a damaged shader cache
Some games keep a local shader cache that can become invalid after a driver change or failed compilation. Close Steam and the game, back up the relevant folder, and delete the title’s shader-cache data when the publisher’s instructions identify its location. Steam or the game will rebuild it at the next launch. The first start may take longer while shaders compile.
Test DirectX and video launch options deliberately
Steam allows launch options to recover incompatible video settings. Open the game’s Properties, stay on the General tab, and enter one option in Launch Options. For Valve/Source games, test the title’s documented auto-configuration option, then a windowed or compatible DirectX/video mode as appropriate. Use only one change per launch, record the result, and remove options that do not help; stacking several undocumented flags makes the next failure harder to diagnose.

Check the monitor path
If the monitor reports “no signal,” check the cable, adapter, input selection, and refresh rate. Test another cable or display when possible. A game can be running normally while an old fullscreen mode requests a timing the monitor or adapter cannot show. If sound continues while the display is blank, treat the issue as a video-mode problem rather than a total crash.
Fix crashes at “Preparing to Launch” or during startup
Use the order that isolates causes fastest
- Verify the game files.
- Repair the legacy runtimes listed in the previous section.
- Update Windows and the GPU driver, using a clean driver installation if a normal update did not help.
- Disable overlays and close heavy background applications.
- Check security-software events and test the game with the required permissions.
- Reset the game’s configuration or shader cache.
- Try one documented launch option and test again.
If the crash moves from startup to the menu after one step, keep that change and continue only with the remaining symptom. If nothing changes, undo temporary flags and avoid piling on compatibility settings. A crash that occurs only after loading a particular save may indicate damaged save data rather than a broken installation; test a new game before replacing files.
Distinguish a missing runtime from a bad file
A missing DLL message, an immediate exit with no window, or a crash on the first audio or video initialization often points to a runtime. Verification can restore a game-owned DLL, but it cannot install a system framework that was never present. Conversely, a runtime repair will not restore a file that was corrupted in the download, which is why both checks belong in the workflow.

Check the per-app mixer
- Start the game and leave it running.
- Open the Windows volume controls and choose the Volume Mixer.
- Find the game and confirm it is not muted and its slider is audible.
- Confirm that the game is assigned to the intended output device rather than a disconnected monitor, headset, or controller.
Windows can remember a different output and volume for each application. A system-wide speaker test therefore does not prove that the game is routed correctly.
Test the output device and audio format
Select the speakers or headset you actually want to use as the default output, then test the game again. Disconnect unused USB audio devices and docks temporarily; Steam’s troubleshooting guidance notes that USB audio hardware, onboard sound, drivers, and surround setup can interfere with game audio. If stereo works but surround does not, switch the speaker configuration to stereo, launch the game, and add channels back only after sound is reliable.

Update or repair audio drivers
Install the current driver for the motherboard, sound card, or USB headset. If the problem began after a driver change, test the previous stable driver or use the device’s repair or rollback option. Avoid installing several competing virtual-audio packages during diagnosis because each can create another output endpoint for the game to select.
Separate an audio-only failure from a full crash
Press a key or move the mouse after the screen goes black. If menus respond, music continues, or the game appears in the mixer, the process is alive and the display path is the priority. If the game exits and the mixer entry disappears, return to the crash workflow rather than repeatedly changing speaker settings.
Linux and Steam Deck troubleshooting
First confirm the title’s platform support on Steam. For a Windows-only game, open the game’s compatibility settings and test another available Steam Play/Proton compatibility tool. Keep a note of which tool and version was used for each test. A title may regress in one Proton release while working in another, and two games with the same symptoms may require different settings.

When launch attempts fail, consult the title-specific compatibility reports and community information shown through Steam. Use those reports to identify known launch options, video modes, or controller and audio workarounds, but verify that the report matches your game version and hardware. On Steam Deck, test both the default display and an external monitor separately; a fullscreen mode that works on the built-in panel may fail through a dock or adapter.
Do not mix Windows-only fixes indiscriminately into a Proton installation. A Windows runtime installer may not be appropriate inside the game’s compatibility prefix. Prefer the documented Proton or title-specific procedure, then retest with a clean prefix only after backing up saves and understanding what the reset removes.

Collect evidence before contacting support
If the documented fixes do not resolve the problem, provide the publisher or Steam support with enough detail to reproduce it. Capcom’s troubleshooting guide, updated July 22, 2026, asks for technical information because classic games can fail under particular environment and hardware combinations.
- Exact game name, edition, branch, and Steam build if shown.
- Operating-system version and whether the computer is Windows, Linux, or Steam Deck.
- CPU, GPU, VRAM, monitor model, cable or adapter, and whether more than one display is attached.
- Graphics and audio driver versions.
- Security software, overlays, recording tools, and other utilities active during the failure.
- The precise reproduction steps, including whether the failure occurs before the menu, after loading a save, or only in fullscreen.
- Screenshots or a short video showing the blank display, error, or missing-audio behavior.
DxDiag.txt, relevant configuration files, and anyCrashReportfiles requested by the publisher.
State which steps you already tried and what changed. “It crashes” is much less actionable than “it exits after Preparing to Launch on Windows 11 with the high-performance GPU selected; file verification completed, DirectX 9 was repaired, overlays were disabled, and windowed mode still produces a black screen.”

- Keep a copy of working launch options and the game’s display configuration.
- Record the driver version that works before installing a major GPU update.
- Do not leave experimental launch flags in place once the game starts normally.
- Back up saves before resetting configuration folders, shader caches, Proton prefixes, or permissions.
- When changing audio hardware, verify the game’s Volume Mixer assignment and output device again.
- On dual-GPU laptops, keep the game assigned to the intended adapter rather than relying on automatic switching.
The practical dividing line is simple: verification repairs the download, runtimes and drivers repair the environment, display options repair rendering compatibility, and mixer or device checks repair audio routing. Applying those fixes in that order gives you a reproducible result instead of a collection of unexplained changes.
