Brief black flashes with G-SYNC usually come from one of four places: an unstable DisplayPort or HDMI signal, a G-SYNC mode that does not suit the application, a display-driver or incompatible-app conflict, or firmware compatibility. Work through those causes in that order. Reseat the cable and remove adapters, test one monitor, verify NVIDIA Control Panel settings, use Task Manager to separate driver flicker from app flicker, then update or reinstall the driver. Apply NVIDIA’s GPU Firmware Update Tool only when your monitor and GeForce RTX 30-series setup matches its stated requirements.
G-SYNC itself is not a brightness effect or a backlight feature. NVIDIA defines it as technology that matches the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate. When that synchronization link repeatedly renegotiates, the monitor can briefly lose the image and return with a black flash.
What a G-SYNC black flash indicates
In a normal G-SYNC frame, the GPU presents a frame and the monitor adjusts its refresh timing to show that frame without tearing. A black flash means the display stopped showing a stable signal for a moment. The interruption can be electrical or optical in the cable path, caused by a mode change between desktop and game, triggered by software, or related to firmware in the monitor or GPU.
Your display must support G-SYNC or be validated as G-SYNC Compatible, and G-SYNC must be enabled for the display you are actually using. A monitor that merely has a high refresh rate is not automatically a G-SYNC display. Likewise, an adapter, receiver, or cable can become the weak link even when the monitor and graphics card are compatible.

Four troubleshooting paths
- Signal path: cable ends, cable quality, connector, adapter, receiver, or monitor input.
- Software path: NVIDIA display driver, Windows display handling, or an application that conflicts with variable refresh.
- G-SYNC scope: Full screen mode versus Windowed and full screen mode.
- System and firmware: multiple-monitor timing or, in specific RTX 30-series DisplayPort cases, GPU firmware.
Record exactly when the flash happens
Do not start by changing several settings at once. The trigger narrows the search and gives you a way to judge whether each change helped.
- Desktop flashes: prioritize the cable, connector, monitor input, driver, and multi-monitor setup.
- Entering or leaving a game: prioritize display-mode transitions and the G-SYNC mode setting.
- Alt-Tab flashes: test the game in a true full-screen mode and compare it with borderless or windowed mode.
- Flashes only at one refresh rate: test a lower standard rate, then inspect the cable and monitor input bandwidth.
- Flashes in one application: suspect that application or one of its overlays before replacing hardware.
- Flashes everywhere, including Windows: treat the problem as a signal or driver fault until isolation tests show otherwise.
Write down the monitor model, connection type, resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, number of displays, and whether an adapter or receiver is in the path. These details make later comparisons meaningful.
Step 1: Stabilize the cable and connector path
A momentary loss of link is the fastest cause to eliminate. A cable can work at a lower refresh rate yet fail when resolution, HDR, or refresh bandwidth increases.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Save your work and shut down the computer if the connector is difficult to access. Turn off the monitor.
- Unplug the DisplayPort or HDMI cable at both the graphics-card end and the monitor end. Inspect for a loose latch, bent shell, or connector that does not seat firmly.
- Reconnect both ends fully. DisplayPort plugs should be completely inserted and latched; HDMI plugs should sit flush without side-to-side movement.
- Temporarily remove docks, adapters, AV receivers, KVM switches, and extension couplers. Connect the graphics card directly to the monitor.
- Try another output on the graphics card and another input on the monitor, selecting that input explicitly in the monitor’s on-screen menu.
- Test with a known-good cable rated for your resolution and refresh combination. For a high-bandwidth DisplayPort setup, a certified DisplayPort 1.4 cable is a sensible baseline; it cannot repair a driver or firmware defect.
- If possible, connect the graphics card to another monitor, or connect the original monitor to another compatible system. A fault that follows the cable or monitor points to the signal path; a fault that stays with the computer points toward the GPU, driver, or configuration.
NVIDIA’s black-screen guidance specifically calls for checking both cable ends and trying another connector or monitor. If the flashes stop after a direct connection or cable change, leave G-SYNC settings alone until you have confirmed the link remains stable at your intended resolution and refresh rate.

Step 2: Test with one monitor
Variable-refresh displays can expose timing interactions between monitors with different refresh rates, resolutions, HDR states, or connection types. Disconnect every additional display, including a television, and leave only the G-SYNC display attached.
- Power off the computer and unplug the extra display cables, or disable the additional displays in Windows display settings.
- Boot with the G-SYNC monitor as the only active display.
- Reproduce the activity that normally causes the flash: desktop use, game launch, Alt-Tab, or a fixed refresh-rate test.
- If the single-monitor setup is stable, reconnect displays one at a time. Match the order and settings that were present when the problem returned.
Single-monitor stability does not prove a second monitor is defective. It shows that the combined timing arrangement is relevant. Keep the display that triggers the issue disconnected while you test drivers and G-SYNC modes; otherwise each result is ambiguous.
Step 3: Verify G-SYNC in NVIDIA Control Panel
Open NVIDIA Control Panel, then choose Display → Set up G-SYNC. Confirm that G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible is enabled, that the intended monitor is selected, and that Windows treats it as the primary display.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose the correct G-SYNC mode
| Setting | Use it when | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Full screen mode | Windowed applications cause flashes, but exclusive full-screen games are stable. | Leave this selected and test the game in full-screen mode. |
| Windowed and full screen mode | You need G-SYNC in borderless or ordinary windowed applications. | Enable it only after the link is stable and test each affected app. |
NVIDIA describes Full screen mode as the choice for systems that have difficulty using G-SYNC with windowed applications while still using G-SYNC in full-screen applications. If the flashes begin when a window appears over a game, start with Full screen mode rather than assuming the cable is defective.

Confirm the display is the one being synchronized
- Select the monitor connected directly to the NVIDIA GPU, not a display driven by an integrated-graphics output or docking device.
- Make that monitor primary in Windows Settings → System → Display before testing.
- Apply the NVIDIA Control Panel change, restart the affected application, and test again. A running game may retain its previous presentation mode until it is relaunched.
Step 4: Use Task Manager to separate driver and app causes
Windows provides a quick diagnostic that does not require guessing. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and leave it visible while reproducing the flash.
- Task Manager flickers at the same time as the rest of the screen: Microsoft’s guidance says to investigate the display driver. Continue with the driver update or clean reinstall path.
- Task Manager remains steady while other content flickers: an incompatible application is probably responsible. Close overlays, browsers, recording tools, RGB utilities, or other recently installed software one at a time, then retest.
This test is useful because Task Manager is rendered by Windows differently from many accelerated applications. It does not identify the exact program by itself, so use a controlled process: close one suspected app, reproduce the trigger, and record whether the result changes. Do not uninstall several programs simultaneously or you will lose the comparison.
Step 5: Update, reinstall, or roll back the display driver
Once the physical link and application behavior have been isolated, update the display driver from NVIDIA or use Windows’ display-adapter update path. Restart after installation, then retest at the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR state, and monitor count you recorded earlier.

If the problem started after a driver change
Do not assume one driver version is universally responsible. A driver can interact differently with a particular monitor firmware, cable, application, and Windows build. If the flashes began immediately after an update, use Windows’ normal rollback option when it is available, or perform a clean installation of the prior known-good package. Test the previous package with the same cable and settings; changing hardware at the same time would hide the result.

Keep the reinstall controlled
- Download the intended driver package before removing the current one.
- Close games, browsers, overlays, and monitoring utilities.
- Use the installer’s clean-install option when available, or Windows’ standard uninstall and reinstall process.
- Restart the computer, enable only the necessary G-SYNC setting, and reproduce the original trigger.
- Re-enable overlays and optional utilities individually after stability is confirmed.
If Task Manager flickered, a driver change is the priority. If Task Manager stayed stable, reinstalling the driver may not address an incompatible application; keep testing software in that branch.
Step 6: Check firmware only when your hardware qualifies
NVIDIA directs owners of certain modern high-resolution DisplayPort G-SYNC or FreeSync monitors paired with GeForce RTX 30-series graphics cards to its GPU Firmware Update Tool for black-screen symptoms. This is not a universal fix for every G-SYNC flash.
- Read the tool’s stated GPU, display, connection, and operating requirements before running it.
- Use the direct DisplayPort connection that matches the documented scenario; do not apply a firmware utility through an untested adapter or receiver.
- Do not interrupt the update process. Follow NVIDIA’s on-screen instructions and restart when requested.
- If your GPU generation, monitor type, resolution, or connection does not match the tool’s requirements, skip this step and continue with signal, mode, and driver isolation.
Monitor firmware can also matter, but update it only with the monitor manufacturer’s procedure for your exact model. Firmware changes are model-specific; a utility intended for another display can make the problem worse.

- Set the monitor to its native resolution and a standard supported refresh rate.
- Turn off HDR temporarily and test the desktop, a full-screen game, and Alt-Tab.
- With one monitor connected, verify that G-SYNC remains enabled and that the selected mode matches your use.
- Re-enable HDR, then reconnect additional monitors, then enable overlays and windowed G-SYNC, testing after each change.
- If the flash returns, the last feature enabled is your strongest lead. Remove it and repeat once to confirm the relationship.
A lower refresh rate is a diagnostic, not a permanent verdict. If 120 Hz is stable but your target rate is not, the result points toward bandwidth, cable quality, monitor input limits, or a mode-specific driver interaction. Restore the intended rate only after the rest of the path is stable.
Match the symptom to the most likely fix
| Observed behavior | First priority | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Black flash on the desktop with one monitor | Reseat or replace the cable, try another port, then test the driver. | The signal is unstable outside any single game. |
| Flash only when launching or closing a game | Use Full screen mode and compare exclusive full-screen with borderless mode. | The transition changes how the application presents frames. |
| Flash only during Alt-Tab | Test Full screen mode, then test the game without overlays. | Window transitions and overlays are involved. |
| Task Manager flickers too | Update, clean-install, or roll back the display driver. | Windows’ diagnostic points toward driver-level rendering. |
| Task Manager stays stable | Close or update the application and its overlays; test one program at a time. | An incompatible app is more likely than a global driver fault. |
| Stable with one monitor, unstable with two | Reconnect the second monitor last and compare refresh, HDR, and connection settings. | The multi-monitor timing combination is a variable. |
| Stable at a lower refresh rate | Check the cable rating, direct connection, monitor input, and driver. | The higher mode demands more link bandwidth or a different timing path. |
| RTX 30-series with a high-resolution DisplayPort G-SYNC/FreeSync display | Check NVIDIA’s GPU Firmware Update Tool requirements. | NVIDIA identifies this hardware combination for a specific firmware remedy. |
When replacing the cable or monitor makes sense
A cable replacement is justified when reseating, another port, and a direct connection change the symptom, or when the cable is unverified for the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR combination. Choose a certified DisplayPort 1.4 cable when your DisplayPort mode requires that capability. Do not expect a new cable to correct a Task Manager flicker caused by a driver or an application that remains stable when Task Manager is open.
Another monitor is an isolation tool, not proof that your current monitor should be discarded. If the second monitor is stable on the same GPU, cable, driver, and settings, inspect the original monitor input and firmware. If both monitors flash through the same connector and cable, keep the monitor out of the suspect list and focus on the GPU output, driver, or system configuration.

- Changing cable, driver, refresh rate, HDR, and monitor count simultaneously, leaving no way to identify the cause.
- Testing only one game and concluding that G-SYNC is broken when the problem is limited to a windowed application.
- Leaving an adapter, receiver, or dock in place while trying to prove that the monitor or cable is at fault.
- Enabling Windowed and full screen mode before confirming that Full screen mode is stable.
- Applying a firmware tool without checking the GPU, monitor, resolution, and connection requirements.
- Judging a driver fix while overlays and background capture utilities are still running.
Practical stopping point
Stop changing settings when you have reproduced the original trigger, removed one variable, and confirmed the result twice. A stable direct cable connection with one monitor, the correct G-SYNC mode, and a current or known-good driver is a meaningful baseline. From there, reintroduce HDR, additional monitors, windowed synchronization, and overlays one at a time. If the flash returns only after one reintroduction, you have identified the configuration that needs adjustment rather than treating G-SYNC as a single on-or-off fault.
