If you cannot invite a friend in BioShock, first confirm that you own a version with multiplayer. The original BioShock is single-player. The original BioShock 2 has a separate multiplayer mode with private matches and Steam-friend invitations, but its story campaign is not documented as cooperative. BioShock: The Collection does not include BioShock 2 multiplayer, so an owner of that edition cannot repair an invite feature that is not installed.
Use the checks below in order: identify the exact game and edition, distinguish a campaign from a multiplayer match, follow the launch procedure only when it matches your PC release, and then escalate with your platform, edition and exact failure point. Current multiplayer availability is not established for every platform, so a generic connection error is not proof that your home network is at fault.
Start by identifying what “co-op” means in your copy
Players use “co-op” to describe several different things. In BioShock, those possibilities lead to different answers:
- Story co-op: two people progressing through the single-player campaign together. The BioShock 2 manual describes a single-player campaign and a separate multiplayer mode; it does not describe cooperative campaign play.
- BioShock 2 multiplayer: competitive matches set in Rapture. The manual describes fighting for survival or fighting for Atlas or Ryan as the fall of Rapture begins.
- A private match: a multiplayer session restricted to invited friends. The manual says private matches are played exclusively with friends and documents invitations from a Steam friends list.
These modes are not interchangeable. A friend invitation cannot create a campaign lobby that the game never documented, and a private-match instruction cannot add multiplayer to a remastered edition that omits it. Do not begin by changing router settings, reinstalling repeatedly or buying networking hardware. Establishing which mode and product you actually have is the most important diagnostic step.

The table is about the edition, not just the words printed on a disc case or a search result. Check the exact entry in Steam, your console library or another launcher. If two entries appear, write down both names and identify which one is installed and running.
Why a campaign invite cannot work
The BioShock 2 manual separates its campaign from multiplayer. Its multiplayer description says, “It’s 1959 and civil war has broken out across Rapture. Fight for your own survival or battle for Atlas or Ryan as the Fall of Rapture begins.” That is a description of the multiplayer setting, not a promise of two-player progress through the narrative campaign.
The manual does not provide a second-player slot, cooperative checkpoint system, campaign lobby or story join procedure. If your goal is to play the narrative together, treat the absence of a campaign invite as a feature limitation rather than a connection fault. Do not expect the private-match instructions to create a two-player story session. Those instructions apply only to the original BioShock 2 multiplayer component.
This distinction also helps when searching for an answer. “Can’t invite my friend to BioShock” could mean that the player owns the first game, owns the Collection, is trying to join a campaign, or is using original BioShock 2 multiplayer. Each case has a different next step. Describe the mode precisely when asking another player or support for help.
Check whether your edition contains BioShock 2 multiplayer
2K’s Steam announcement for BioShock: The Collection explicitly excludes BioShock 2 multiplayer. This is the most common explanation for an owner who sees BioShock 2 in a library but cannot find a multiplayer menu or invite option. The collection’s remastered game and the original multiplayer release are not interchangeable for this purpose.
- Open the launcher or console library and read the full product name.
- Look for a distinct original BioShock 2 multiplayer option, rather than assuming that a BioShock 2 Remastered entry contains it.
- Launch the game’s main menu and note whether a multiplayer option exists. If the option is absent in the Collection edition, connection troubleshooting cannot add it.
- Check which executable or shortcut was launched if your library contains both an original and a remastered entry.
- Record the platform, store or launcher, and edition before contacting support. “BioShock 2” alone is not enough information to identify the relevant build.
Steam’s official support listings are useful for this check: the original BioShock listing is single-player, while BioShock 2 is listed with both single-player and multiplayer. Those labels help distinguish the products before you investigate an invitation. They do not establish that a service is currently reachable on every platform.
What an absent menu tells you
An absent multiplayer menu is an edition or product-identification problem first. It is not evidence that an invite server is temporarily down. If you launched the first BioShock or BioShock 2 Remastered in the Collection, there is no matching multiplayer feature for the invitation to reach. Capture a screenshot or the exact library name so support can see which product you mean.

If you own original BioShock 2 on PC
An older BioShock 2 PC manual gives a launch sequence for its multiplayer option. Use it as a historical procedure for that PC release, not as a guarantee of compatibility with current Windows versions, updated launchers or other platforms.
- Open the BioShock 2 pre-game Options window.
- Select BioShock 2 Multiplayer.
- Launch the multiplayer program.
- If the program asks you to relaunch, close it and start it again as prompted.
After multiplayer starts, check whether you can reach its match interface before attempting an invitation. If the multiplayer executable does not launch, capture the exact message and note whether you are using the original PC release or a remastered Collection. Do not present this older sequence as a verified fix for a current operating system; the manual does not establish present-day Windows support.
The procedure also should not be transferred to a console. The researched manual’s instructions are PC-specific, and they do not establish how a console edition should launch, whether a separate executable exists, or whether the same service is available there.
Inviting a friend in the original multiplayer mode
The original BioShock 2 manual’s invitation instruction is: “Invite players from your Steam friends’ list to the game.” It also describes private matches as matches played exclusively with friends. Therefore, an invitation problem has to be classified by the stage at which it fails:

The multiplayer menu is missing
This points first to the title or edition. Recheck whether you launched BioShock, BioShock 2 Remastered in The Collection, or the original BioShock 2 release. The first game and the Collection edition do not provide the same multiplayer component as the original BioShock 2 release. Note whether the menu is absent for both players or only one; that comparison can reveal that the two installations are not the same edition.
The multiplayer program will not launch
Use the PC launch sequence above only if your installation is the release described by that manual. Record the platform, edition, operating-system version, launcher and exact error text. A launch failure is different from a friend-invite failure and should be reported as such. If the program closes immediately, say that it closes; if it displays a message and remains open, quote that message instead of summarizing both symptoms as “connection problems.”
You can open multiplayer but cannot send an invite
Confirm that you are in the original multiplayer mode and that the friend is being selected from the Steam friends list described by the manual. If the friend is not selectable, record whether the list is empty, the invitation control is disabled, the friend appears offline, or an error appears after selection. These are distinct observations. Also record whether you can create a private match before choosing a friend, since the manual treats private matches and invitations as multiplayer functions rather than campaign functions.

The friend receives an invite but cannot join
Write down whether the invitation arrives, whether accepting it opens the game, and the exact point at which joining stops. A received invitation followed by a failed join is a different symptom from an invitation that cannot be sent. Note whether the friend reaches a lobby, a loading screen or a match, and whether either player can enter multiplayer without an invitation. Do not describe all of these as simply “co-op is broken.”

Private matches are a multiplayer feature, not campaign co-op. Verify that both players are using the same supported game and edition, then record the platform and whether either player can reach the match independently. The available official material does not establish current matchmaking or private-match service availability for every platform, so a failed connection cannot be assigned to a home network without that information. Avoid changing several network settings at once; doing so would make it harder to tell whether the failure is in the edition, launch, invitation or service.
Compare the likely cases before changing anything

Separate a service-availability problem from a local problem
The current availability of original BioShock 2 multiplayer is not established for every platform and version. A general connection error may therefore represent an unavailable or unsupported service, a version mismatch, a missing Collection feature or a local launch problem. Use this decision path:
- Mode check: Is the requested feature a story campaign, original BioShock 2 multiplayer or a private match?
- Edition check: Does the installed product contain that feature? The Collection omission is decisive here.
- Platform check: Are you on Steam/PC or a console? The documented launch procedure is PC-specific.
- Build check: Are both players launching the same product name and edition? Do not assume that “BioShock 2” on one screen means the same build on another.
- Failure-point check: Does the problem occur before multiplayer launches, while sending an invite, while accepting it, or while finding or joining a match?
- Availability check: Look for current platform-specific information before assuming the service is operating. 2K’s general help center links to server-status pages, but no BioShock 2-specific live status is established here.
This sequence prevents a common mistake: applying network troubleshooting to an edition that does not contain multiplayer or to a campaign that was never documented as cooperative. It also keeps a service question separate from a launch question. A program that never opens has not yet reached matchmaking, while a friend who receives an invitation has already passed the sending stage.
What to include in a support request
2K provides a BioShock support category and a support-request route. A useful request should let support identify the product and reproduce the exact failure. Include:

- whether it is the original release, a remastered release or BioShock: The Collection;
- your platform and, for PC, the launcher;
- whether you are trying to play the story, start original multiplayer, create a private match, send an invitation, accept an invitation or join a match;
- the exact error message, including punctuation where possible;
- what happens immediately before the failure;
- whether the multiplayer menu is present and whether the program launches;
- whether the other player can launch multiplayer or join a match independently;
- the date and approximate time of the attempt if you suspect a service interruption.
The general 2K help center can also direct you to status information. Because a general status page is not the same as a BioShock 2-specific confirmation for your platform, state the platform and edition in your request rather than reporting only that “the servers are down.” If you are using the older PC launch procedure, say that explicitly and identify the operating-system version; the manual’s historical instructions do not prove current compatibility.
Common wrong turns
Calling every problem “co-op”
That wording hides the key distinction between a campaign and a multiplayer match. Say “original BioShock 2 multiplayer private match” when that is what you mean. If you want to progress through the story together, say “cooperative campaign”; the manual does not document that mode.

Assuming The Collection includes every feature of the original
The Collection’s BioShock 2 Remastered component omits BioShock 2 multiplayer according to 2K’s 2016 announcement. Reinstalling the same Collection or repeatedly sending an invitation will not supply the omitted component.
Using the old PC procedure as a universal fix
The manual’s Options-window procedure belongs to an older PC release. It does not prove that the same executable works on a current Windows installation, and it says nothing about console launch behavior. Treat it as a way to identify the intended historical launch path, not as a promise that modern systems will support it.

Guessing at a live-service outage
Official support material does not establish current BioShock 2 multiplayer availability by platform. Avoid quoting player counts, server counts or an availability percentage. Ask support to confirm the named platform and version, and include the time of the failed attempt.
Buying hardware before identifying the edition
No router, cable, controller or other physical product is a verified remedy for a missing multiplayer mode or an unsupported campaign invite. Confirm the feature and edition first, then escalate with precise symptoms. Hardware changes cannot install a multiplayer component that the Collection intentionally omits.

Why is there no multiplayer menu in my BioShock 2 installation?
