On the Android-based Sony Walkman Signature Series WM1AM2 and WM1ZM2, rapid battery loss and failed playback usually have identifiable causes: a demanding codec or output mode, wireless radios and screen use, active sound processing, an unrefreshed Music player database, an unsupported or oversized file, or a mode-specific output condition. Start with the non-destructive checks below. If a fully charged player now lasts only about half its normal time, Sony considers the battery potentially worn and recommends evaluation by a Sony dealer or Service Center.
Start with the symptom, not a factory reset
Use this triage to choose the shortest safe path. None of these first actions erases music, settings or Bluetooth pairings.

Why battery life varies so widely
Sony’s quoted runtimes are estimates, not a guarantee for every album or listening setup. Battery demand changes with the codec and sample rate, whether you use the stereo-mini jack or Bluetooth, wireless connections, screen-on time, sound adjustments, streaming, temperature and the battery’s age. A player that meets its estimate with local 44.1 kHz music through the wired jack can run for substantially less with DSD, LDAC, a bright screen and active processing at the same time.
Sony’s approximate reference figures
The following figures were published by Sony in 2022 under Sony’s test conditions. They are useful baselines for the WM1AM2/WM1ZM2, but they are not laboratory guarantees for your files, volume or environment.

Sony also says Bluetooth can shorten battery life by up to 60 percent, active sound adjustments can shorten it by up to 60 percent, and high-resolution streaming can shorten it by about 20 percent. The screen consumes considerably more power while it is on. These percentages are Sony’s broad guidance, not additive deductions: using several demanding features together does not produce a reliable single percentage.
Reduce battery drain safely
1. Power the player off when you are finished
Sleep is not the same as a complete shutdown. If you will not listen for a while, press and hold Power and choose the power-off command. This prevents the Android system, radios and open applications from consuming charge during storage or transport.
2. Close applications you are not using
Open the recent-apps view and dismiss applications that you no longer need, particularly streaming, browser or video applications. Background activity can keep the processor, network connection or screen awake even when Music player is paused. Sony lists turning off unused apps as a first-line battery measure.

3. Set an automatic shutdown for paused playback
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Auto power off.
- Choose a period appropriate to your listening habits so the player shuts down after it has been paused and idle.
Auto power off is preferable to allowing a paused player to remain in standby indefinitely. Pick a period long enough not to interrupt breaks between tracks, but short enough to prevent an accidental overnight drain.
4. Lower screen brightness and shorten screen use
Reduce brightness in the display controls and avoid leaving the display awake while listening. The screen is a major variable when browsing albums, using streaming services or changing settings. Lock the player after starting playback rather than keeping the library screen visible.

5. Turn off sound adjustments for a controlled test
Disable the equalizer, digital processing and other sound adjustments temporarily, then compare runtime over a normal listening session. Sony says active sound adjustments can reduce battery life by up to 60 percent. If disabling them restores the expected span, re-enable only the processing you actually need and accept the associated runtime cost.
6. Disable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when they are idle
Open quick settings or the relevant Settings pages and switch off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when you are listening to local files through the wired jack. Bluetooth playback requires continuous radio activity; Sony’s estimates show roughly 20 hours for MP3/SBC and 18 hours for FLAC 96 kHz/24-bit over LDAC, compared with about 40 hours for several wired, lower-demand formats.

7. Separate codec, output and screen effects
To identify the main drain, make one controlled comparison: use the same album, keep the screen locked, turn off sound adjustments and wireless radios, and listen through the stereo-mini jack. Then test your usual Bluetooth, DSD, streaming or processing setup. A large difference points to the added workload rather than an immediate battery fault.
8. Consider temperature and charge history
Very hot or cold conditions can temporarily reduce available runtime. Let the player return to a moderate room temperature before judging its capacity. Repeated high-load use, age and many charge cycles also reduce the energy a battery can store. Do not diagnose wear from one short session; compare several similar sessions after applying the idle and wireless controls.
When Battery Care makes a full charge look incomplete
Battery Care is deliberate charge protection, not a charging failure. With Settings > Battery > Battery Care enabled, Sony limits the maximum charging capacity to reduce battery deterioration. The player therefore will not fully charge while this function is on, and Sony explicitly says that behavior is not a malfunction.

Leave Battery Care enabled if preserving long-term battery health is more important than maximum playback time on each charge. Disable it only when you specifically need the full capacity, then re-enable it for routine charging. Check this setting before replacing a cable, charger or battery merely because the indicator stops below 100 percent.
Recognize a worn battery
Sony’s Help Guide says that when the battery is sufficiently charged but battery life has fallen to about half its normal span, the battery may be worn out. The earlier WM1A/WM1Z guidance directs owners to a Sony dealer or Sony Service Center for replacement at roughly that point.
Use the 2022 estimates as a reference, not a promise. For example, a player that once approached the wired 44.1 kHz estimate may reasonably show less with DSD, Bluetooth or sound processing. Service becomes the sensible next step when comparable low-demand sessions—screen locked, radios off, no active processing and a healthy charge—consistently deliver about half the expected time.
Sony does not publish a universal service price, turnaround time or region-independent replacement program for these models. Contact the Sony support channel for your country before sending the player, and ask about the applicable WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2 service procedure. Do not open the player or attempt an unapproved battery replacement.
Fix songs that are missing or will not play
1. Verify the file format, protection and size
The Music player supports MP3, WMA, FLAC, WAV, AAC, HE-AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, DSD, APE and MQA. A supported extension alone is not enough: copyright-protected files cannot be played.

These limits apply to the individual file, not merely the total free space on the player or card. A large single-image album or long live recording can fail even when many smaller tracks play normally.
2. Copy to a folder that Music player indexes
Use the default folder layout:
- Internal storage: Music or Download.
- microSD card: Music.
Do not rename the default folders or place tracks elsewhere and expect Music player to find them automatically. When transferring over USB, wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting. Sony warns not to disconnect during transfer and not to format the player’s memory on a computer.
3. Refresh the library database
- Open Music player.
- Open its menu.
- Tap Update database.
- Wait for scanning to finish, then browse the artist, album or folder view again.
A file can be present in storage but absent from the Music player interface until this scan completes. If a large transfer is still being indexed, keep the player connected to power and avoid interrupting the process.
4. Restart the player before changing data
For a normal restart, hold Power for two seconds and tap Restart. Sony says this does not delete data or Bluetooth pairing information. If the interface is frozen and the menu will not respond, hold Power for 10 seconds to force a restart.

Restore sound in USB-DAC mode
USB-DAC mode has a specific screen-state failure. If another music or video application is opened or backgrounded while the USB-DAC screen is no longer in front, sound may stop even though the USB connection remains active.
- Return to WALKMAN Home.
- Tap Music player to bring the USB-DAC screen back.
- Resume the source and verify that the selected USB output is still connected.
USB-DAC mode is intended for music. Sony warns that it can introduce video/audio delay, so it is not the right mode when synchronized video monitoring is required. If ordinary local playback works but USB-DAC does not, concentrate on the USB-DAC screen and source application rather than re-copying every music file.
Understand High-Res streaming behavior
The High-Res streaming switch is under Settings > Sound > High-Res streaming. When enabled, supported third-party apps are up-converted to 192 kHz/32-bit. When disabled, playback is down-converted to 48 kHz/16-bit. Sony cautions that not all online music-service apps support this function.
This setting affects streaming-app processing and battery use; it does not make an unsupported file format playable and it does not replace the Music player database scan. If a service ignores the setting, that is a compatibility limitation of the app rather than evidence that the Walkman is defective. High-resolution streaming can reduce battery life by about 20 percent according to Sony’s guidance.
Choose the right fix for your playback source

A maintenance routine that prevents repeat problems
- Keep albums in the default Music or Download locations and run Update database after a substantial transfer.
- Finish USB copies before disconnecting the cable.
- Use Auto power off and power the player off for long periods of storage.
- Lock or dim the screen during listening.
- Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and sound adjustments when they are not part of the session.
- Leave Battery Care enabled if its charge limit suits your daily use.
- Keep a backup before any reset or service shipment.
- Record the file format, output mode and approximate runtime when diagnosing a suspected battery fault; comparing like with like is more useful than comparing a DSD/Bluetooth session with a wired MP3 session.
When to escalate to Sony
Contact Sony support or an authorized Sony dealer when a controlled, low-demand test still produces about half the normal runtime, when the player will not charge even after checking Battery Care and the charging setup, or when repeated restarts and database updates do not resolve playback with a known-good supported file in the correct folder. Provide the exact model (WM1AM2 or WM1ZM2), software state, file format and size, output mode, and the steps already attempted. That information helps separate a worn battery, a file problem, a library-index issue and a mode-specific fault without erasing your data unnecessarily.
