If your Galaxy began draining battery quickly or running hot after a One UI 9 update, start by installing every pending system and app update, checking the Battery usage graph, and rebooting. Then apply reversible controls—Device Care optimization, background-app limits, Power saving, lower brightness and refresh rate—and use Safe mode to determine whether a downloaded app is responsible. Keep charging heat separate from ordinary post-update activity: use a compatible Samsung charger, avoid heat, and seek service for idle overheating, swelling, unusual smells, abnormal charging or rapid drain that continues in Safe mode.
There is no authoritative Samsung bulletin establishing one universal One UI 9 battery or thermal defect. The update may be the timing context while restoration, adaptive learning, 5G conditions, display settings, an app, a charger or failing hardware supplies the actual cause.
What can cause the problem after One UI 9
A major Android and One UI upgrade can temporarily change how the phone behaves. Galaxy may be restoring photos, videos, files and applications; rebuilding indexes; updating apps; and relearning usage patterns for Adaptive Battery. Those jobs increase processor, storage and network activity, so the phone can feel warm and lose charge faster for a while. The effect should trend down as the work finishes, rather than remain as constant idle heat.

A recently updated app can run continuously in the background, a weak 5G signal can make the modem work harder, or a bright 120 Hz display can consume more energy than before. A damaged cable, incompatible power adapter, blocked ventilation or a deteriorating battery can create charging heat. Treat the update as the date the symptom appeared, not proof that One UI 9 itself is defective.

Menu names and available controls differ by Galaxy model, carrier, region and build. The paths below use current Samsung labels where they are available; if a label differs, use Settings search for the named feature.
First response: update, measure and reboot
Install all pending software
- Open Settings > Software update and select Download and install. Apply the update if one is offered and restart when prompted.
- Open Galaxy Store, choose Menu or Updates, and install every available app update.
- Open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and update all apps.
- Restart the phone after the installations complete. A restart clears a stuck process and gives the system a clean start without deleting personal data.
Updating matters because a compatibility bug in an app can appear only after the operating-system change. It also prevents you from diagnosing an older app build as a One UI 9 problem.
Read the Battery graph before changing settings
- Open Settings > Battery. On some models you must tap Battery usage or View details.
- Choose the period that includes the rapid drain and inspect the graph, screen-on time and ranked apps or services.
- Tap an unfamiliar or disproportionately high consumer to see background time, mobile-network activity and other details.
Look for a single app with unusually high background use, a sudden increase in screen consumption, or mobile-network activity that coincides with weak coverage. A graph showing heavy use immediately after the upgrade can also reflect restoration of a large library or application set. Record the top consumers before you change several settings; that record makes later testing more useful.

Apply reversible power controls
These changes have low data risk and can be undone individually. Change one group at a time so you can tell which control helped.
Run Device Care
- Open Settings > Device care (called Device Care on some builds).
- Tap Optimize now and allow the checks to finish.
Device Care can close unnecessary background activity and identify abnormal conditions. It is a housekeeping step, not a substitute for finding an app that repeatedly restarts.

Limit rarely used apps
- Open Settings > Battery > Background usage limits.
- Turn on automatic sleeping if your model offers it, or add infrequently used apps to Sleeping apps.
- Use Deep sleeping apps for apps that do not need notifications or real-time updates. Do not place messaging, alarm, navigation or accessibility apps there if you need them to run continuously.
If one app remains at the top of Battery usage, open its app-info page and check whether it has a recent update. You can temporarily restrict background activity there, but expect delayed notifications for that app.
Use Power saving or Light performance profile
For a quick test, open Settings > Battery and enable Power saving. It limits background work and may reduce performance, location behavior or network activity depending on the model. If the phone offers Performance profile > Light, select the Light profile to reduce processing demand while keeping the phone usable. Turn either option off after testing if you need full performance.

- Open Settings > Display and lower brightness or enable adaptive brightness.
- Shorten Screen timeout if the screen often stays on while unattended.
- On models with a 120 Hz panel, open Motion smoothness and select Standard refresh rate instead of Adaptive or High for a battery-saving test.
A brighter screen and higher refresh rate consume energy whenever the display is active. If the Battery graph identifies the screen as the main consumer, these changes are more relevant than repeatedly clearing app caches.
Allow time for post-update learning, but use a boundary
Adaptive Battery can relearn your habits after an operating-system upgrade. During that period, Android may adjust which apps run in the background, and your own usage may be higher while you restore accounts and settings. There is no authoritative published One UI 9 duration or percentage that guarantees when this process ends, so do not rely on a fixed “optimization takes exactly X days” claim.
Instead, compare equivalent days: note overnight percentage loss with the phone idle, screen-on time, signal conditions and whether restoration is still running. A gradual improvement supports a temporary workload explanation. A phone that stays hot while untouched, loses charge rapidly overnight, or worsens after all restoration and updates finish needs isolation testing rather than more waiting.

Check 5G, signal and location conditions
5G Galaxy phones maintain 3G/LTE connectivity alongside 5G. In an area with weak or constantly changing 5G coverage, the modem can use more power and generate more heat than a stable 3G/LTE connection. This does not mean 5G is faulty; it means radio conditions affect the result.
- Compare battery behavior in a location with strong coverage and in the place where the drain is worst.
- For a controlled test, select an LTE/3G network mode if your carrier and model expose that option under Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Restore your preferred mode after testing.
- Review apps that use continuous navigation, Bluetooth scanning or location. In Settings > Location > App permissions, change apps that do not need continuous access to Allow only while using the app or Deny.
Do not disable location or mobile data permanently if you rely on emergency, navigation, wearable or work features. The purpose is to identify whether radio and location activity explains the graph.
Use Safe mode to separate an app from the system
Safe mode starts Galaxy with downloaded apps disabled. Samsung’s diagnostic rule is: “If the issue is gone in Safe mode: One of your recently downloaded apps was likely the cause of the problem.” This test has high diagnostic value and does not erase personal files.
Enter Safe mode
- Open the power menu by holding the side and volume-down buttons together, or use the power icon in Quick Settings, depending on your model.
- Touch and hold Power off until the Safe mode option appears.
- Tap Safe mode and confirm. “Safe mode” appears on the screen after the restart.
If that method is unavailable, power the phone off, turn it on, and hold the volume-down button when the Samsung logo appears. Button behavior can vary by model and software build.
Run a controlled comparison
- Use the phone for a comparable period in Safe mode. Check idle temperature, overnight loss and the Battery screen.
- If heat and drain largely disappear, uninstall apps added or updated just before the symptom began. Start with the apps highest in the Battery graph.
- Exit Safe mode by restarting normally. Remove or roll back one suspect app at a time, then retest before changing another.
- If the problem remains in Safe mode, downloaded apps are less likely. Continue with charging, network, hardware and service checks.
Safe mode cannot prove that every system component is healthy; it narrows the cause. An app that runs only after you sign in or reconnect a service may also need a normal-mode retest.

Handle charging heat as a separate fault path
Use the correct adapter and cable
Google Android Help warns that a battery drains much faster when hot, even when not in use, and that this kind of drain can damage the battery. It also warns that other power adapters may charge slowly or damage the phone or battery. Use a Samsung-compatible USB-C charger only after matching the connector, wattage and charging standard to the exact Galaxy model. A higher-wattage adapter is not automatically safe or faster if the phone does not support its charging standard.
If the phone is completely drained, Samsung instructs users to charge it for at least 15 minutes with an appropriate Samsung charger before attempting to power it on. Keep the phone uncovered on a hard, cool surface while charging. Remove thick cases temporarily if they trap heat, and do not charge under bedding, in direct sun or inside a hot vehicle.
Recognize normal versus abnormal warmth
Mild warmth during fast charging, camera use, gaming, setup, data restoration or weak-signal operation can be expected. Stop demanding tasks and let the phone cool before continuing. Do not place a hot phone in a freezer or against ice; condensation can cause additional damage.
Unplug the device and stop using it if it becomes too hot to handle, shows a temperature warning, charges intermittently, emits an unusual smell, or has a swollen back or screen. Do not puncture, press or continue charging a swollen battery. Arrange professional service.
Run Samsung’s built-in battery diagnosis
- Open the Samsung Members app.
- Tap Get help (or Support), then Interactive checks.
- Select Battery if the option is available and follow the test.
A poor result, persistent idle heat or abnormal charging is a reason to contact Samsung service with the model number, carrier, region, One UI build number and the date the symptom began. Those details help distinguish a model-specific firmware issue from an app or accessory problem.

When a factory reset is appropriate—and when it is not
A factory reset is the least reversible software step. Consider it only after updates, Battery inspection, Device Care, power controls, Safe mode and charging checks have failed, and after service support has advised that it is reasonable.
Prepare before resetting
- Back up photos, videos, documents, messages and authenticator or security-app data. Smart Switch or a cloud account can help, but verify that the backup contains what you need.
- Confirm you know the Google and Samsung account credentials that will be requested after the reset.
- Record two-factor recovery codes and export anything an app stores only locally.
- Keep the phone charged and connected to reliable Wi-Fi during setup afterward.
Understand the limitation
A reset erases user data and settings. It may remove a corrupted configuration, but it may not permanently solve an app defect that requires a future update. If the phone becomes hot or drains quickly before you reinstall apps, restore the backup only after service or Samsung support has reviewed the result. Reinstalling every app at once can recreate the original problem and make the cause impossible to identify.

Symptoms that require prompt service
- The phone remains hot while idle, especially in Safe mode and with the screen off.
- Battery percentage drops rapidly overnight without a high-use explanation.
- Charging stops, starts repeatedly, takes unusually long, or produces a warning.
- The rear cover or screen is lifting, the battery appears swollen, or the device smells unusual.
- Samsung Members reports poor battery health or the phone shuts down unexpectedly.
- Drain and heat persist after updates, controlled charging tests and Safe mode.
Back up what you can without stressing a hot or damaged device, power it down if necessary, and contact Samsung service. Do not continue gaming, recording video or fast-charging to “test” a phone showing physical battery symptoms.

It does not establish a universal One UI 9 battery or thermal defect, identify every affected model, or promise a specific fix date. Verify the exact Galaxy model, carrier, region, build number and installed apps before attributing the behavior to the operating system.
If Samsung later publishes a model-specific bulletin or firmware update, install it through Settings > Software update and compare behavior after the phone has completed restoration and charging tests. Until then, the evidence-based approach is to measure first, isolate downloaded apps, control display and network demand, use a suitable charger and escalate physical or persistent symptoms.
