Start by checking the exact build before troubleshooting. Samsung’s current Galaxy A56 firmware record verifies Android 16 releases and a One UI 8.5 feature release dated 2026-05-19, followed by a security release dated 2026-09-16 for the listed variant; it does not verify a One UI 9.0 release for the A56, and no verified record establishes One UI 9.0 for the A36. “One UI 9.0” may therefore be the label shown by a different model, country, carrier, or an incorrect recollection. Open Settings > About phone > Software information and record the One UI version, Android version, build number, and security patch before changing settings.

A little extra drain and warmth immediately after a major update can be temporary: Samsung says its optimization learns your usage pattern after an operating-system upgrade. Restart once, update every app, and monitor Settings > Battery for several days. If the phone remains hot while idle, loses power rapidly after that learning period, shuts down, shows swelling, or fails Samsung Members diagnostics, treat it as a persistent fault and arrange service rather than repeatedly resetting settings.

What the “One UI 9.0” report means on a Galaxy A36 or A56

Software rollouts are not identical across Galaxy models, countries, carriers, or regional variants. Samsung’s firmware notes explicitly state that the exact changes can differ by device model, country, and service provider. The Galaxy A56 record checked for this article lists Android 16 releases and a One UI 8.5 feature update on 2026-05-19, then a security release on 2026-09-16. That record does not establish a One UI 9.0 release for the A56, and no verified record establishes one for the A36.

Check the build shown on your own phone, then use Settings > Software update to look for a newer package. Write down the model code as well as the build number. This prevents applying advice for a different regional firmware and gives a service technician something precise to investigate. If the label in a screenshot, notification, or forum post does not match the version on your phone, troubleshoot the installed build rather than the label.

Decide whether the drain is temporary optimization or a fault

After an operating-system upgrade, the phone may re-index data, restore content, compile applications, and learn new usage patterns. Samsung support describes battery optimization as learning the pattern after initial use following purchase or an OS upgrade. During this period, brief warmth and higher consumption can occur, especially while apps are being restored or updated.

Use this short observation window

  1. Restart the phone once after the update has completed.
  2. Open Galaxy Store and Google Play Store, choose the update-all option, and install any pending application updates.
  3. Use the phone normally for several days rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
  4. Check Settings > Battery each day. Note whether the largest consumer is the screen, a particular app, mobile service, or an unnamed system process.
  5. Write down when the phone feels warm and what it was doing at that moment: charging, restoring data, gaming, recording video, navigating, or sitting idle.

There is no independently established “normal” post-update loss percentage or temperature threshold for these models in the verified material. A percentage copied from another Galaxy is not a reliable pass/fail test. The useful distinction is whether consumption trends back toward your previous pattern after the optimization period, or whether a repeatable abnormal pattern remains.

Signs the initial learning period is probably not the whole explanation

  • The phone is hot while the screen is off and no restore, update, or demanding task is running.
  • One app becomes the dominant consumer immediately after it was installed or updated.
  • Drain is concentrated in a weak-signal area but improves on Wi-Fi or in a stronger-signal location.
  • Heat returns every time you connect a particular charger or cable.
  • The phone repeatedly shuts down, reports a thermal warning, or shows a raised or separating back cover.

These patterns do not prove a failed component, but they tell you to move from general observation to targeted isolation and safety checks.

Find what is using the battery before changing settings

Open Settings > Battery and inspect the daily usage graph and app list. Compare screen-on use with periods when the phone was idle. Record the top one or two entries before restricting anything; otherwise, you can hide the symptom without identifying its cause. Check on more than one day because a single long video call or navigation trip can distort the ranking.

Pattern What it suggests Next check
One newly installed or recently updated app dominates usage An application may be looping, syncing excessively, or using location in the background. Update it, clear that app’s cache from its own app settings, then remove it temporarily if heat and drain began after installation.
Screen is the largest consumer during long screen-on sessions Brightness, screen timeout, or a high refresh mode is doing most of the work. Lower brightness, shorten timeout, and select a standard refresh rate where the model offers that choice.
Large loss while the phone is idle Background applications, poor network reception, or a service repeatedly waking the phone may be involved. Review background limits and compare Wi-Fi with mobile-network behavior.
Drain occurs mainly on mobile data in weak reception The modem may be searching repeatedly for service. Test in a stronger-signal location and compare with Wi-Fi; turn off mobile radios that are not needed.
Heat appears only while charging Charging accessories, port condition, direct sun, a case, or simultaneous heavy use may be contributing. Follow the charging-safety checks below and stop charging if the phone becomes unusually hot.
Several system services and apps rise together The phone may still be restoring, indexing, or handling a system-wide workload. Allow the observation window to finish, complete app updates, and recheck before making many changes.

Limit background activity without breaking notifications

Samsung’s Device care > Battery > Background usage limits controls let you place nonessential applications in Sleeping or Deep sleeping. Samsung describes this application-management system as a way to prevent battery use from unintended background operations.

Apply the limits selectively

  1. Open Settings > Device care > Battery > Background usage limits.
  2. Review the Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps lists.
  3. Add games, shopping apps, social networks, or other nonessential apps that do not need immediate updates.
  4. Keep messaging, alarm, navigation, health-monitoring, and work apps that require prompt notifications out of Deep sleeping.
  5. Use Never sleeping apps only for applications that genuinely need continuous background access; every exception reduces the potential savings.
  6. After adding an app, check whether its notifications or background synchronization still work as you expect.

Samsung’s developer documentation says unused, battery-consuming apps may enter Sleeping mode after about three days and Deep sleeping after about 16 days. Those are policy descriptions, not guarantees for every firmware version, and Samsung can change the timing. Manually adding an app takes effect sooner, but may delay notifications or background synchronization. If an app is essential for an alarm, two-factor code, navigation route, health alert, or work message, do not put it in Deep sleeping merely to improve a battery graph.

Reduce display and radio demand

Display and wireless radios can create substantial demand even when the battery itself is healthy. Make one change at a time so you can see which one affects your usage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Lower display brightness, enable adaptive brightness if it suits your use, and shorten Settings > Display > Screen timeout.
  • Turn off Always On Display when you do not need it, or use a schedule if your model provides one.
  • Select the standard refresh-rate option in Settings > Display > Motion smoothness when available. A high refresh mode can use more power during screen-on activity.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/location, and Mobile Hotspot when they are not needed. Keep in mind that poor cellular reception can consume power as the phone searches for service.
  • Close a hotspot session when finished and avoid leaving navigation or location-heavy applications running in the background.
  • When comparing two days, keep brightness, refresh rate, and network conditions similar so the comparison is meaningful.

These steps reduce demand; they do not prove that an update damaged the battery. If idle drain remains high after background limits and radio tests, continue with the isolation checks rather than stacking more display changes.

Stop overheating safely and inspect charging conditions

Heat can come from setup, data restoration, gaming, video recording, a background application, weak reception, or charging equipment. Samsung warns that damaged or incompatible chargers and cables can cause heat or damage.

  1. Stop gaming, recording, navigation, file transfers, and other intensive work when the phone is hot.
  2. If it is charging and unusually hot, unplug it and let it cool. Do not continue charging just to complete a percentage target.
  3. Remove the case temporarily and move the phone out of direct sunlight or a hot vehicle.
  4. Inspect the USB-C port for lint, moisture, bent contacts, or visible damage. Do not force a tool into the port.
  5. Replace frayed, bent, or non-standard charging accessories with a Samsung-approved charger and cable appropriate for the phone.
  6. After the phone is cool, charge it without heavy use and compare the result with the previous setup.

Warmth during a long setup or restoration session can be temporary. Heat while the phone is idle, repeated thermal shutdowns, or heat that returns with a known-good charger points to a problem requiring further diagnosis. Do not diagnose by repeatedly swapping unknown chargers; use one known-good, Samsung-approved setup and record what happens.

Compare conditions to isolate the cause

When the source is unclear, make controlled comparisons instead of guessing. Keep the test periods roughly comparable and change only one major condition at a time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • App-specific versus system-wide: remove one recently installed app temporarily and observe whether both heat and drain improve.
  • Idle versus screen-on: leave the phone unused for a comparable period, then compare that loss with a normal active session.
  • Charging versus unplugged: note whether heat appears only on the charger.
  • Wi-Fi versus mobile network: compare similar use in a strong-signal area and on Wi-Fi.
  • Normal mode versus Safe Mode: Safe Mode disables third-party applications. If the symptom disappears there, a downloaded app is more likely; if it remains, system software, radios, or hardware deserve attention.

These comparisons narrow the possibilities; they do not by themselves identify a defective component. Record the result in plain language—for example, “cool on Wi-Fi, hot on mobile data” or “normal in Safe Mode, hot in normal mode”—so a technician can reproduce the relevant condition.

Use Safe Mode as an isolation test

Safe Mode is useful when the battery screen points to a downloaded application but does not identify which one. Enter it using Samsung’s normal power-menu Safe Mode procedure for your model, then use the phone briefly without reinstalling or opening third-party apps. Check whether idle drain and warmth continue. If the symptom disappears, remove or update recently installed applications one at a time and retest in normal mode. If the symptom remains in Safe Mode, do not keep deleting apps at random; focus on firmware, network conditions, charging equipment, and Samsung diagnostics.

Safe Mode is a comparison, not a repair. It may also prevent some normal notifications and features from working while enabled. Return to normal mode for ordinary use and note exactly which apps were installed or updated before the symptoms began.

Should you clear the cache or factory-reset the phone?

Clear an individual app’s cache first

If Settings > Battery identifies one app, open that app’s entry in Settings > Apps, choose Storage, and use Clear cache. This removes temporary files for that application. Recheck its behavior after updating it. Do not clear data unless you understand that it can sign you out or remove locally stored app information.

Do not make a cache wipe the first response

Samsung’s guidance emphasizes restarting, updating software, observing optimization, identifying the consumer, and controlling background activity. It does not establish that a broad cache-partition wipe is required for a Galaxy A36 or A56 after this update. If a service technician gives model-specific recovery instructions, follow those instructions exactly; do not erase data merely because the phone feels warm for a day.

Reserve a factory reset for persistent software problems

A factory reset erases personal data and settings; it is not a harmless battery toggle. Consider it only after you have backed up photos, messages, authentication methods, and other important data, confirmed the exact firmware, tested without a suspect third-party app, and ruled out charging problems. Make sure you know the Google and Samsung account credentials needed after the reset. If the phone is still hot while idle or has warning signs such as swelling, a reset is not a substitute for service. Ask an authorized Samsung service center for advice before erasing a phone that may have a hardware fault.

Run Samsung Members diagnostics

Open Samsung Members > Get help > Interactive checks > Battery and run the battery check. Save the result and the build information you recorded earlier. A poor result, continuing abnormal heat, or repeated shutdowns is a reason to contact an authorized Samsung service center rather than continue experimenting with settings.

When contacting support, include the model code, One UI and Android versions, build number, security-patch date, when the drain began, the highest battery consumers, whether the phone was idle or active, and whether the symptom changed on Wi-Fi, mobile data, Safe Mode, or a known-good charger. This avoids a vague “the update made it hot” report and helps separate an application conflict from a radio, firmware, charging, or battery issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should battery optimization take after an update?

Samsung says optimization learns your usage pattern after an operating-system upgrade. Restart once, update Galaxy Store and Play Store apps, use the phone normally, and watch Settings > Battery for several days. There is no verified universal percentage or temperature threshold that defines the end of this period.

Is One UI 9.0 officially available for every Galaxy A36 or A56?

No single rollout applies to every model and region. The Galaxy A56 firmware record checked here lists a One UI 8.5 feature release dated 2026-05-19 and a security release dated 2026-09-16 for one listed variant, but it does not verify One UI 9.0 for that A56 or for the A36. Check Settings > About phone > Software information on your own phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which apps should I put in Deep sleeping?

Use Deep sleeping for nonessential apps that do not need immediate notifications or background synchronization, such as games or shopping apps. Keep messaging, alarms, navigation, health-monitoring, and work apps that require prompt alerts out of Deep sleeping. Samsung describes about three days before Sleeping and about 16 days before Deep sleeping for qualifying unused apps, but firmware policy can change.

Should I keep charging if the phone gets hot?

No. Stop intensive use, unplug an unusually hot phone, remove the case, move it out of direct sun, and let it cool. Inspect the USB-C port and replace damaged or non-standard accessories with a Samsung-approved charger and cable. Seek service if heat returns with a known-good setup.

Will clearing the cache fix post-update drain?

Clear the cache of an individual app only when Settings > Battery identifies that app as the abnormal consumer. Samsung’s general troubleshooting path is to restart, update apps and firmware, observe optimization, identify the consumer, and control background activity. A broad cache-partition wipe is not established as a required first step.

When is a factory reset justified?

A reset is a last software step after backup, exact-build verification, app isolation, and charging checks. It erases personal data and settings and will not repair a swollen battery, repeated thermal shutdowns, or heat while idle. Ask an authorized Samsung service center before resetting a phone with physical warning signs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can Safe Mode help?

Safe Mode disables third-party applications. If drain and heat disappear there, a downloaded app is more likely; if they continue, investigate firmware, network conditions, charging equipment, or hardware. Safe Mode is an isolation test, not a permanent repair.

What symptoms require urgent service?

Stop using and charging the phone for swelling, a damaged battery, smoke, a burning smell, or repeated thermal shutdowns. Do not press on a swollen battery or open the phone. For persistent but less urgent drain or heat, run Samsung Members battery diagnostics and contact an authorized service center if the result is poor or the problem continues.

The Bottom Line

Verify the installed build first: the A56 record lists One UI 8.5 on 2026-05-19 and a security release on 2026-09-16 for the listed variant, not a verified One UI 9.0 release. After any major update, restart, update apps, and allow several days for Samsung’s usage-pattern optimization. Use Settings > Battery to find the actual consumer, restrict only nonessential background apps, reduce display and radio demand, and test charging with a Samsung-approved charger and cable. If heat persists while idle, diagnostics are poor, shutdowns recur, or the battery is swollen or smells burnt, stop troubleshooting and use an authorized Samsung service center.
