If your Nothing phone loses charge faster immediately after a Nothing OS update, do not assume the battery has failed. Nothing says system integration and optimisation can temporarily raise consumption, and that usage may recover after 2–3 days of normal use. Restart the phone with the screen off, charge it overnight, then use Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to identify the programs drawing power. Check 5G, signal strength, temperature and background activity before escalating a persistent problem.
The 2–3-day period is Nothing’s support guidance, not a measured battery-life statistic or a promise that every device will return to its previous runtime. Menu names can differ by phone model, carrier and Nothing OS release.
Why battery drain can appear after an update
A major system update changes more than the visible interface. During the first period after installation, the phone may be integrating system components and optimising software. Nothing’s support article describes this directly: “After the mobile phone is upgraded, due to system integration and optimisation, it will increase some power consumption.” Nothing also says the phone may recover by itself after 2–3 days of normal use (official support guidance).
That explanation does not establish a specific bug in your update, a hardware fault or a universal result. Treat the timing as a clue. If the loss started immediately after installation and gradually eases during ordinary use, temporary post-update activity is plausible. If one application suddenly dominates Battery Usage, the phone stays hot while idle, or severe drain continues beyond the expected adjustment period, investigate those symptoms separately.

Do these post-update steps first
Follow Nothing’s recommended sequence before changing many settings. It gives the operating system time to finish its work and gives you a clean baseline for diagnosis.
- Restart with the screen off. Turn the display off, then restart the phone using the normal power-menu restart command. A restart is the first step in Nothing’s post-update advice; it is not a factory reset and does not erase your data.
- Charge overnight. Connect the phone to your usual compatible charger and leave it charging overnight after the update. Nothing presents this as part of the post-update recovery routine, not as a cure for a defective battery.
- Use the phone normally for 2–3 days. Keep your ordinary mix of calls, messaging, mobile data and Wi-Fi rather than running an artificial battery test. The support page does not quantify how many percentage points should return or guarantee a particular screen-on time.
- Record unusual symptoms. Note when the phone is hot, whether it loses charge while idle, which network type is active and which programs appear at the top of Battery Usage. These observations make later support conversations more useful.
Avoid judging the result from a single short session. A navigation trip, a poor-signal commute or a long camera recording can consume much more power than an otherwise similar day. The useful comparison is your normal pattern before and after the update, not a guaranteed percentage target.
Find the program or service using the power
Nothing directs users to the battery breakdown at Settings > Battery > Battery Usage (support instructions). Open it after the phone has had enough ordinary use to collect meaningful data. The exact labels, time range and categories can vary by model or software release, so use the entries actually shown on your device rather than looking for a prescribed list.

How to read the list
- Look for an outlier. An application that is far above the rest, especially when you have barely opened it, is a better lead than a small difference among several heavily used applications.
- Match the percentage to your activity. A video, game, camera or navigation app can legitimately rank high after intensive use. A high entry is a reason to ask whether the usage was expected, not proof that the app is faulty.
- Check idle periods. If the phone loses substantial charge while you are not using it, compare the list with the times it was in your pocket or on a desk. Background activity, network work and radios can matter even when the screen is off.
- Check again after a change. After you stop an unusual activity or move to a stronger signal, return to Battery Usage later and see whether the same entry remains dominant. One snapshot cannot establish causation.
What you can and cannot conclude
Battery Usage identifies where the operating system attributes consumption; it does not by itself diagnose a damaged battery. A system component, mobile network activity or several small background consumers may appear differently on different releases. Do not uninstall a critical system component or disable a service solely because it appears in the list. If an entry is unclear, capture its name and the time period for Nothing support rather than guessing at a remedy.
Check 5G, signal and network conditions
Nothing identifies 5G as a possible contributor to increased consumption. Its support path for changing the preferred network type is Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Preferred network type (Nothing’s instructions). The names or location can differ with your model, SIM configuration and carrier.
Use a controlled comparison
- Write down the current preferred network type and note whether the drain is occurring in a weak-coverage location.
- If another network type is available in that menu and suits your plan, select it temporarily rather than changing several other settings at once.
- Use the phone in a similar place and for a similar period, then compare heat, idle loss and Battery Usage.
- Restore your preferred setting if the comparison offers no benefit or reduces the service you need.
This is a diagnostic comparison, not evidence that 5G is defective or that a particular alternative is always more efficient. A weak cellular signal can make the phone work harder to maintain service. Nothing’s power guidance also lists weak Wi-Fi or cellular signal as a contributor to power use and heat (Power & Charging support). Your result will depend on local coverage, carrier configuration and how you use data.

Consider temperature and the surrounding conditions
Nothing specifically lists low temperatures as a possible cause of increased consumption. Cold conditions can also make the displayed charge level behave differently from what you expect, so compare a cold-weather incident with a normal-temperature day rather than treating one reading as a permanent capacity loss. The support material does not provide a temperature threshold or a quantified effect.
Heat is a separate warning sign. A phone doing substantial background work, searching for a weak signal or running several active radios can consume more power and become warm. Nothing’s Power & Charging guidance connects weak signal, background apps and radios with power use and heat (official guidance).
Simple environmental checks
- Compare drain in a location with reliable Wi-Fi or cellular coverage and in the place where you first noticed it.
- Note whether Bluetooth, hotspot, location services or other radios are being used for a specific task. Do not turn off a connection you need; use the observation to explain the Battery Usage result.
- Remove unusually demanding activity from the comparison period, such as prolonged gaming, navigation or video capture, so that the baseline reflects ordinary use.
- Keep the phone out of direct heat and allow it to cool naturally. Do not cover a hot phone or deliberately chill it with ice or a freezer.
Deal with background activity without guessing
After an update, several applications may perform their own synchronisation or setup work. The official guidance does not prescribe a universal list of apps to disable, and the correct action depends on what appears in your Battery Usage screen. Use a measured approach:

- Identify the top consumer and the time period shown by Battery Usage.
- Ask whether you intentionally used that application or service during the period.
- Check whether the drain changes when the phone is on a strong network and not performing a demanding task.
- If the same unexpected application remains high across repeated checks, update that application through your normal app store, review its own in-app sync or location settings, and contact the application developer if its behavior is clearly abnormal. Keep Nothing support in the loop when the top entry is a system component or the phone is also overheating.
Do not make several irreversible changes at once. Turning off notifications, location or background data can break functions you rely on and makes it harder to tell which condition mattered. The purpose of this process is to isolate an unusual consumer while preserving the services you need.

Nothing advises contacting customer support or a designated repair center when the phone remains inexplicably hot or battery drain remains severe after the basic checks (Power & Charging support). Escalate sooner if the device becomes dangerously hot to touch, shows swelling, emits an unusual smell, or behaves erratically while charging. Stop using a damaged device and follow local safety guidance; do not attempt to open it yourself.

Prepare useful information for support
- Phone model, Nothing OS version and the date and approximate time of the update.
- When the drain began and whether it is mainly during use, while idle, or while charging.
- Screenshots or a written record of the entries in Settings > Battery > Battery Usage.
- Network conditions, including whether 5G was active, coverage was weak and whether a controlled network comparison changed anything.
- Temperature and heat observations, including whether the phone was warm with the screen off.
- The restart, overnight charge and 2–3-day normal-use steps you already completed.
This information helps support distinguish temporary post-update optimisation from a network, application or hardware-related problem. Nothing’s published guidance does not require a factory reset as the first-line response, so do not erase the phone merely because the first day’s battery graph looks poor.

Keep a short two- to three-day log
A simple log prevents you from confusing different conditions. At the start and end of each day, record the approximate battery percentage, whether the phone was mostly on Wi-Fi or mobile data, whether 5G was active, and any long sessions of gaming, navigation, video or hotspot use. Add a note whenever the phone feels hot or loses charge while idle. After 2–3 days, compare the pattern with the first day rather than focusing on one moment.
If the drain is easing and no warning symptom appears, continue normal use. If it is unchanged or worsening, use the log and Battery Usage details when contacting Nothing. The support pages do not publish a model-independent battery percentage, runtime target or guaranteed recovery result, so a support diagnosis must be based on your model, software release and observed conditions.
What not to treat as a guaranteed fix
- Do not assume the update permanently damaged the battery. Timing alone cannot distinguish temporary optimisation from an app, signal or temperature issue.
- Do not rely on a battery percentage ritual. The cited Nothing guidance recommends a restart, overnight charge and normal observation; it does not claim that repeated full discharges or calibration cycles repair post-update drain.
- Do not buy a replacement battery or cooling accessory as a first step. The available guidance does not establish hardware failure or support a particular accessory for this problem.
- Do not factory-reset immediately. A reset erases personal data and is not identified as the first-line remedy in the cited support instructions. Preserve your evidence and contact support if the defined checks fail.
Model, carrier and software-version limits
The question does not identify a Nothing phone model, Nothing OS version, country or carrier. That matters because menu wording, available network choices and background services can differ. Follow the labels on your own device and avoid treating an option shown in an online screenshot as universal.
