AvastSvc.exe is the core Avast Antivirus service. Avast normally runs several background processes for system integration, driver loading, sandboxing, updates, and real-time protection. Those processes should not normally create a sustained performance problem. If AvastSvc.exe remains near the top of Task Manager while the computer is idle or repeatedly slows normal work, treat that as an abnormal condition: confirm the pattern, update Avast, run Avast’s Repair workflow, restart Windows, and test again. Do not permanently kill the service or add broad antivirus exclusions as a first response.
There is no authoritative CPU percentage that defines “too high” for AvastSvc.exe. A useful definition is sustained impact compared with your usual idle baseline, a repeatable slowdown, or spikes that return during the same activity. The sequence below is designed for Windows 11, while noting where Avast’s diagnostic recording is unavailable on older Windows releases.
What AvastSvc.exe does
Avast Business documentation identifies C:Program FilesAvast SoftwareAvastAvastSvc.exe as the core Avast Antivirus service process. It is one part of a larger product rather than the entire antivirus engine. Avast explains that its security software uses multiple background processes to integrate with Windows, load drivers, provide sandboxing, and maintain immediate protection.

Avast says those processes do not typically consume unusually high system resources. The concern is not the mere presence of AvastSvc.exe, nor a brief increase while security work is occurring; it is an unusual, sustained pattern that has a measurable effect on responsiveness, battery life, fan noise, or application performance.

What counts as an abnormal pattern
- AvastSvc.exe remains a leading CPU consumer while the PC is idle for an extended period.
- The same spike returns whenever you perform a particular operation, such as downloading through a browser or copying a large file.
- The computer becomes sluggish, the fan runs continuously, or other applications stop responding while AvastSvc.exe is active.
- Usage stays high after the activity that might have triggered a scan or update has finished.
A short spike during a scan, virus-definition update, browser download, or large file operation can be expected security work. Record the timing instead of assuming that every spike is a defect.
Confirm that AvastSvc.exe is the process causing the slowdown
Before changing settings, establish exactly which process is responsible and when the load occurs. Microsoft’s performance guidance recommends using Task Manager’s Processes and Performance views to identify components consuming system resources.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details. - On the Processes view, select the CPU column to sort by current processor use. Confirm that the entry is AvastSvc.exe or clearly belongs to Avast, rather than another Avast component or an unrelated application.
- Open the Performance view and watch CPU use for several minutes while you do nothing. Record the approximate idle level and whether AvastSvc.exe remains active.
- Repeat the observation during the activity that appears to trigger the spike: a scan, an Avast update, browser downloads, a large file operation, or another repeatable action.
- Write down the time, duration, approximate CPU impact, Avast product name and version, Windows edition and build, and what was happening when the spike began. This record is useful if you need to send logs or a performance recording to Avast.
Do not diagnose the problem from one instantaneous reading. Windows schedules background work, so a momentary peak can disappear before it affects you. A repeatable pattern and a comparison with your normal idle baseline provide more useful evidence than an invented percentage threshold.

Fix Avast high CPU usage in the supported order
Avast directs users who find that its processes consume an unusual amount of resources to its Repairing Avast Antivirus instructions. The following order limits disruption and preserves protection while you test each change.
1. Update virus definitions and the Avast application
Open Avast and install every virus-definition update and application update it offers. The exact update labels can vary by Avast edition, so use the update controls displayed in your installed product. When the updates finish, restart Windows rather than merely closing the Avast window.

An update can replace a damaged or faulty component, but an update alone does not prove that a particular release caused the problem. Avoid attributing the spike to a version without recording the version and observing whether the behavior changes after the update and reboot.
2. Run Avast’s Repair App workflow
Use Avast’s installed-app repair workflow and choose the product’s Repair option. Let the process complete, accept a restart if Avast requests one, and do not interrupt it by terminating Avast processes in Task Manager. Repairing the installation is the action Avast specifically points to when its processes show unusual resource use.
A repair is different from simply disabling shields. It attempts to restore the installed components while retaining the antivirus installation. If the repair option is unavailable, record the product name and version and proceed to Avast support rather than deleting service files manually.
3. Restart and retest the original trigger
After repairing, restart Windows. First observe the PC at idle, then repeat the operation that previously caused the spike. Compare the duration and impact with the notes you made before the repair.
- If AvastSvc.exe settles at idle and the trigger no longer causes sustained load, keep the updated and repaired installation and continue monitoring.
- If the same operation still causes a brief spike but the computer remains responsive, record that result and its duration; security scanning may still be occurring normally.
- If sustained usage returns at idle or the slowdown is unchanged, continue with the recording and escalation steps instead of repeatedly killing the process.
Use Avast’s performance recorder on Windows 11
Windows 11 users with Avast Free Antivirus or Avast Premium Security version 21.2 or later can create a performance recording from Avast’s troubleshooting settings. Avast documents this feature as a way to capture evidence when its processes remain the likely source of the problem.

Match the spike to its trigger
Timing often distinguishes routine protection work from a persistent installation or compatibility problem. Use the following observations while retesting; they are investigation clues, not proof that any one activity is defective.
| When the spike appears | What to record | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| During an Avast scan | Scan type, start and end times, and whether CPU use falls afterward | Allow the scan to finish, restart, and check whether idle usage returns to baseline |
| While Avast updates | Whether the load ends with the update and reboot | Complete the update, restart Windows, and compare the post-update behavior |
| During browser downloads | Browser, download size or type, and whether every download reproduces the issue | Retest with the same operation after repair; include the repeatable pattern in support evidence |
| During large file operations | Copy, archive, or open operation; files involved; start and end times | Repeat once after reboot and note whether the load persists after the operation |
| When another security product is active | Which product was scanning and whether both products were active simultaneously | Document the overlap and ask support for a compatibility diagnosis instead of adding broad exclusions |
| While the PC is idle | Idle CPU observations over several minutes and recurrence after reboot | Update, repair, reboot, then create a recorder capture or escalate with logs if it continues |
Why killing or disabling AvastSvc.exe is risky
AvastSvc.exe supports Avast’s antivirus service and real-time protection. Ending the process can stop the visible CPU use, but it may also remove protection against threats or leave the installation in an indeterminate state. Do not use End task as the permanent fix and do not configure Windows to disable the service automatically.
If you must stop a process to recover a completely unresponsive session, treat that as an emergency, temporary action. Restart Windows and restore protection before normal browsing or file work. The supported sequence is update, repair, reboot, retest, and escalate—not permanent service termination.
Do not hide the symptom with broad Microsoft Defender exclusions
Microsoft warns that antivirus exclusions can make a computer or network more vulnerable. An exclusion can be appropriate only as a narrowly scoped workaround for a specific, understood compatibility issue, with a plan to remove it afterward. It is not a general solution for AvastSvc.exe CPU use.

Adding large folders, entire drives, or Avast’s installation directory to Microsoft Defender exclusions merely prevents one security engine from examining content; it does not repair Avast, establish the cause, or guarantee lower total CPU use. If another security product is involved, document the overlap and obtain a targeted compatibility recommendation instead of weakening protection across the system.
Windows performance settings that can help temporarily
Microsoft’s general Windows performance guidance includes the Best performance power mode and visual-effects settings. These options can make a slow PC feel more responsive after you identify the process consuming resources, but they do not repair AvastSvc.exe or reduce the underlying antivirus work.
Use them only as temporary measures while troubleshooting. Best performance can increase power consumption, heat, and battery drain. Visual-effects reductions change the Windows interface rather than the Avast service. Return to your normal power and appearance settings after the antivirus issue is resolved or escalated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Escalate with useful evidence when repair fails
Avast’s troubleshooting documentation describes its diagnostic steps as a way to determine a cause, not necessarily as a permanent fix. If updating, repairing, restarting, and retesting do not resolve sustained usage, give Avast support a reproducible case rather than a single CPU screenshot.

Describe the failure precisely
Instead of writing “Avast uses too much CPU,” state what you can reproduce: for example, that AvastSvc.exe rises whenever a large file operation begins, remains elevated after the operation ends, and returns after every reboot. This helps support distinguish a trigger-specific event from idle background activity and decide which diagnostic files are relevant.

Common situations and the right response
The CPU spike disappears after a scan
Record the scan timing and confirm that idle usage returns to your baseline. A completed scan followed by normal idle behavior is different from a service that remains elevated indefinitely. Keep Avast updated and watch for recurrence rather than disabling protection.
The spike returns after every reboot
Confirm that the same AvastSvc.exe path is involved, then perform the update and Repair workflow again only once as a controlled test. If the pattern survives a clean restart and repair, create the Windows 11 performance recording when available and escalate with timestamps and versions.
Another security product is running at the same time
Record which products and operations overlap. Simultaneous inspection can create a compatibility or workload interaction, but the evidence does not identify a universal setting that fixes every combination. Do not make broad exclusions without a narrowly defined reason and a plan to restore protection.
Task Manager shows a different Avast process
Do not assume that every Avast process is AvastSvc.exe. Avast uses multiple background processes. Record the exact executable name, confirm its path when possible, and describe that process to support; the repair and diagnostic path may differ.
Keeping a useful baseline after the fix
After the service returns to normal behavior, keep the notes from your successful retest: Avast version, Windows build, the operation that previously triggered the load, and whether CPU returned to baseline after completion. This gives you a comparison point if a later update or workload produces a new spike.
When investigating a recurrence, change one thing at a time—first update, then repair if needed, then reboot and retest. Changing power settings, disabling services, and adding exclusions simultaneously removes the evidence needed to identify the cause and can reduce protection without solving the problem.
Bottom line
AvastSvc.exe is a legitimate core Avast Antivirus service, and multiple Avast background processes are expected. Sustained, repeatable CPU impact is not something to accept as normal. Confirm the process and trigger in Task Manager, update Avast, run its Repair workflow, restart Windows, and retest. On Windows 11 with Avast Free Antivirus or Premium Security 21.2 or later, capture a performance recording through Menu > Settings > General > Troubleshooting > Open recorder if the problem persists. Preserve real-time protection, avoid broad Defender exclusions, and escalate with a reproducible record when repair does not resolve the load.
