There is no single confirmed fix for every Assassin’s Creed Valhalla crash, launch failure, low-FPS problem, or stutter. Start by identifying when the problem happens and which platform you use. On PC, compare your system with Ubisoft’s requirements, measure performance with the in-game Benchmark, and adjust graphics settings methodically. For a persistent PC problem, Ubisoft asks players to submit DxDiag and MSInfo reports with a support case. Console steps depend on the platform; Ubisoft’s detailed checklist cited here is for PS4, not PS5 or Xbox.
First, identify the failure and your platform
“Crashing” can mean several different things: the game may fail before the Ubisoft splash screen, close during loading, crash at a repeatable point in the game, or become unstable only after an extended session. Low FPS and stuttering are different symptoms again. Separating them helps you choose a relevant next step instead of changing several settings or systems at random.
Before troubleshooting, write down the platform, game version if displayed, operating-system or console software version, PC hardware, graphics settings, any recent driver or system changes, and the exact error message. Note when the failure occurs and whether it can be repeated. These are useful details to provide to support; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause.
- Won’t launch or crashes at startup: note whether the game closes before or after its opening screens and capture any error text.
- Crashes at the same point in-game: record what you were doing and whether the location or action is repeatable.
- Low FPS or stuttering: note your resolution, graphics settings, and the performance you see in the in-game Benchmark.
Ubisoft’s Valhalla troubleshooting page directs players reporting crashes or low frames per second (FPS) to its general technical troubleshooting guidance. It does not provide a definitive cause-by-cause launch-error matrix, so avoid assuming that one symptom has a universal fix.
#1 Best Overall

A useful first distinction is whether the problem prevents the game from reaching its main menu or appears after gameplay has begun. A startup failure cannot be tested with the in-game Benchmark, while a benchmark result can provide a comparison for low-FPS symptoms. For any platform, note whether the same action reliably produces the same failure. That observation is more useful to support than a general description such as “the game is broken,” but it still does not prove a particular cause.
Keep the troubleshooting record simple: platform and edition, game version if shown, system version, error text, when the issue occurs, and what you tried. On PC, add the hardware and graphics settings. Avoid making several unrelated changes before recording the initial symptoms; otherwise, it becomes harder to tell which change affected the result.
PC: check whether your system matches the target
Ubisoft’s PC requirements page, updated 30 September 2026, lists four configurations by resolution and target frame rate. These are Ubisoft’s published targets, not a guarantee that a matching PC will never crash or stutter. The CPU entries require AVX, AVX2, and SSE 4.2 support; the listed RAM is dual-channel.

Compare your PC with the row closest to the resolution and frame-rate target you want, rather than treating “minimum” as a promise of 60 FPS. In particular, check CPU instruction support, GPU model and memory, dual-channel RAM, available storage, DirectX version, and whether your drive meets the SSD condition for your target. Ubisoft lists 147 GB available storage for these configurations. The SSD is recommended for the two 1080p targets and required for its listed 1440p and 2160p targets.
If your PC falls below a published target, that is useful context when interpreting performance, but it does not prove the cause of a crash. Do not buy a graphics card, more memory, or a new drive solely because the game stutters; first compare the relevant component with Ubisoft’s target and measure what the game is doing.
The table separates the minimum 1080p/30 FPS configuration from recommended 60 FPS targets. Those labels matter: a computer that is near the minimum row is not being compared with the same target as a system intended for 1440p or 2160p at 60 FPS. Match your actual resolution and target to the closest listed row before interpreting performance. Ubisoft’s page does not present the tiers as a guarantee of identical results across every scene or a diagnosis for crashes.
Storage has two separate checks here. Ubisoft lists 147 GB of available space for each configuration, and its SSD recommendation changes by target: recommended for both 1080p rows, required for the listed 1440p and 2160p rows. Check the requirement that matches the target you are evaluating rather than assuming that every listed configuration has the same SSD language. If your storage or hardware falls short, record that as relevant context; the listed requirements do not show that any one shortfall is the cause of a specific error.

The source page currently lists these specific targets, so check Ubisoft’s current requirements if you are troubleshooting later and want to confirm they have not changed.

PC: measure FPS and stuttering with the Benchmark
Ubisoft provides an in-game Benchmark so you can measure the current configuration and compare the result after a graphics adjustment. The supported flow is short:
- Start the game and open Benchmark from the main menu.
- Confirm the run and let the test complete. Record the result and the graphics settings used.
- Open the Graphics settings and adjust settings to better fit your system requirements. Ubisoft specifically recommends this when seeking better performance.
- Run the Benchmark again and compare it with the first result.
For a meaningful comparison, change one setting group at a time and record each result. That is a practical way to isolate which adjustment affects performance; Ubisoft’s page does not require a particular one-variable testing method. Keep the resolution and other settings unchanged between runs when you want to judge one adjustment. If FPS improves after an adjustment, you have evidence that the changed configuration affects benchmark performance; it does not establish that the setting caused a separate crash.
The Benchmark measures performance in its test, not every possible gameplay situation. If the reported result is acceptable but you experience stutter or a crash at a repeatable in-game point, retain both observations and explain the difference when seeking help. A benchmark alone cannot diagnose a launch failure that happens before the game reaches its main menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse the test as a baseline rather than as a pass/fail verdict. Record the resolution, graphics settings, result, and any visible instability during the run. After changing settings, compare the new result with that baseline. If you change multiple groups together, you may see an improvement or decline but have less information about which adjustment mattered. A controlled comparison—keeping other settings steady while changing one group—is an editorially useful way to make the results easier to interpret.
Ubisoft’s instruction is to adjust settings in the Graphics tab to better match system requirements, then compare performance. It does not identify a particular graphics option as the universal fix for Valhalla crashes, nor does it promise that a benchmark improvement will remove a crash. If the game is stuttering only in a specific gameplay situation, record that condition separately from the benchmark result instead of assuming the test reproduces it.
PC: choose the next step by symptom
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla won’t launch
If the game never reaches the main menu, the in-game Benchmark is not available yet. Record how far startup proceeds, the error text, your PC configuration, and any recent system changes. Compare the PC with Ubisoft’s listed operating-system, DirectX, CPU-instruction, storage, and hardware requirements. If it continues to fail, open a Ubisoft Support case and attach DxDiag and MSInfo reports as requested on Ubisoft’s Valhalla troubleshooting page.
There is no cause-by-cause launch-error chart in the cited Valhalla guidance, so avoid treating a particular startup stage as proof of one known defect. Describe whether the game closes before the Ubisoft splash screen, during a loading sequence, or after reaching a menu. If an error appears, preserve its exact wording rather than paraphrasing it. This information helps make a support request specific without pretending to diagnose the issue yourself.
Startup or in-game crash
Describe whether the crash happens before the opening screens, during loading, at the same in-game point, or only after longer play. Record any displayed message and the game and system details noted earlier. If the problem persists on PC, escalate with the diagnostic reports rather than relying on a historical patch note to identify the cause.

When a crash is repeatable, note the sequence of actions and whether it occurs at the same point each time. If it only happens after a long session, include that timing. The official guidance does not establish that either pattern points to a specific part, setting, or patch, so treat it as a description for troubleshooting rather than a confirmed explanation.
Low FPS or stuttering
Compare your hardware and target with the requirements table, then use the Benchmark to establish a baseline. Adjust Graphics settings to better match your system and rerun the test for comparison. If the game’s benchmark and the problem you observe do not agree, report both; avoid treating an improvement in the test as proof that every gameplay symptom is resolved.
Low FPS means performance below the expected frame rate, while stuttering describes uneven or interrupted motion; a player may notice one without clearly seeing the other. Record which one you experience, along with resolution and settings. Ubisoft’s broad support direction covers low FPS and crashes, but the material cited here does not provide an exhaustive diagnosis for every kind of stutter or a prescribed frame-rate target outside the listed PC configurations.
Ubisoft’s cited guidance does not establish a particular third-party utility as a Valhalla fix. It also does not substantiate a universal cause or a required purchase for these symptoms.
That distinction also matters when considering costs. The listed requirements are useful for comparing your current PC with Ubisoft’s targets; they are not a recommendation to buy a new component whenever performance is disappointing. No specific replacement part, repair tool, or third-party optimizer is established as a Valhalla remedy by the official guidance cited here. Measure first, record the symptom, and avoid spending money based only on a generic crash or stutter description.
Console: follow instructions for the console you own
Ubisoft’s detailed console checklist cited here is a general technical-support article for PlayStation 4. It is not a Valhalla-specific PS5 or Xbox repair procedure. If you play on PS5, Xbox One, or Xbox Series X|S, confirm that the game and console software are updated, record any error, and consult the relevant platform maker or Ubisoft Support for instructions specific to that system. Do not apply PS4 Safe Mode or database-rebuild instructions to another console.
Ubisoft lists Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Amazon Luna, Epic Games Store, Ubisoft Store, Steam, and Ubisoft+. Availability and editions vary. The troubleshooting path can differ by platform, so specify which one you use when you seek help; a store listing or a step written for one console does not establish that the same procedure applies elsewhere.

- Power cycle the console. Fully turn the system off and restart it, rather than only resuming a suspended session.
- Test launching while offline. Disconnect the console from the internet and try launching once. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to keep the console offline.
- Restore licences. Use the PlayStation licence-restoration option described in Ubisoft’s PS4 support guidance.
- Consider rebuilding the database in Safe Mode. Ubisoft includes this in its checklist, but warns that some Safe Mode options may cause data loss. Back up important data before using Safe Mode, and make sure you select the intended option.
- Check installation and drive location. Confirm the game has finished installing and note whether it is installed on an external drive. Ubisoft’s checklist includes checking the drive if one is involved.
- Reinstall if appropriate. If the earlier checks do not resolve the issue, Ubisoft lists reinstalling as a possible step. Make sure you understand the effect on local data and saves before removing an installation.
- Try another console if available. Ubisoft suggests testing on another console to help isolate whether the problem follows the system.
If the PS4 problem persists after these checks, Ubisoft’s general article points players to PlayStation Support. The checklist is general PS4 technical guidance, so it should not be read as proof of a Valhalla-specific defect.
Proceed in order and note the outcome of each check. An offline launch attempt, for example, is a one-time diagnostic step in Ubisoft’s checklist, not a permanent workaround. Database rebuilding and other Safe Mode options require particular care: Ubisoft’s warning about possible data loss is a reason to back up important data first and confirm the option you intend to select. Reinstalling is also a later option in the sequence, not a guaranteed fix, and the checklist does not say that every player should begin by deleting the game.
If the game is on an external drive or the installation is incomplete, include that detail when describing the issue. Ubisoft’s PS4 checklist specifically calls for checking installation completeness and drive location, but it does not establish that either condition explains every crash. If you do not have another PS4 available for the suggested comparison, skip that isolation step rather than treating it as required.

Ubisoft’s Title Update 1.5.1 notes, dated 19 April 2022, document specific fixes under “Performance and Stability.” The update addressed a freeze involving equipping or unequipping the Forceful Rune on new expansion weapons, an Xbox Quick Resume “Failed to Save Game Progress” message, general performance and stability, and FPS drops in some scenes.
Those notes are historical context, not a current issue list. They do not show that every player experienced those problems, establish that a similar symptom today has the same cause, or identify the latest game update. If your own issue resembles one of those descriptions, include the exact symptom and platform in a support case; do not assume the 2022 notes prove the current state of the game.
The examples are specific: one involved a freeze while equipping or unequipping the Forceful Rune on new expansion weapons; another was an Xbox Quick Resume message reading “Failed to Save Game Progress”; the notes also mention general performance and stability and FPS drops in some scenes. That detail may help you recognize what the 2022 update addressed, but it does not turn a vaguely similar modern crash into the same bug. Do not use these entries as proof that an issue remains unresolved or that a more recent update has not changed the game.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Assassin’s Creed Valhalla crash or fail to launch?
Ubisoft’s Valhalla troubleshooting page directs players with crashes or low FPS to general technical troubleshooting, but it does not provide a definitive cause-by-cause launch-error list. Note where startup stops, any exact error, your platform, and whether the failure repeats; those details help support investigate without assuming a universal cause.
How can I troubleshoot low FPS or stuttering on PC?
Compare your PC with Ubisoft’s target for your resolution and frame-rate goal, then run Benchmark from the main menu and record the result and Graphics settings. Adjust settings to better match your system requirements, rerun the test, and compare. A benchmark result measures its test and may not reproduce a specific gameplay stutter.
Does Ubisoft recommend an SSD for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla?
Ubisoft lists 147 GB available storage. An SSD is recommended for its two 1080p PC configurations and required for the listed 1440p and 2160p configurations. Use the row that matches the resolution and target frame rate you are evaluating.
Can I use the PS4 Safe Mode or database rebuild steps on PS5 or Xbox?
No. The detailed checklist cited here is Ubisoft’s general PS4 technical guidance, not a PS5 or Xbox procedure. It warns that some Safe Mode options may cause data loss, so back up important data before using those PS4 steps. For PS5 or Xbox, consult current platform-specific support.

What should I send Ubisoft if the PC issue continues?
Ubisoft asks players with persistent PC issues to contact Support and attach DxDiag and MSInfo reports. Include the platform, symptom, exact error, when it happens, PC details, and—if the issue is low FPS or stuttering—the Benchmark result and settings. Do not post diagnostic files publicly.
Are the Assassin’s Creed Valhalla fixes in Title Update 1.5.1 current?
The notes dated 19 April 2022 describe issues addressed in that historical update, including FPS drops in some scenes and a specific Xbox Quick Resume save-progress message. They do not establish the latest update or prove that a similar symptom today has the same cause.
The Bottom Line
Troubleshoot by platform and symptom rather than applying a supposed universal fix. On PC, compare your system with Ubisoft’s resolution-specific requirements, use the Benchmark to measure before and after Graphics changes, and contact Ubisoft Support with DxDiag and MSInfo if the problem persists. On PS4, follow Ubisoft’s general checklist carefully and back up data before Safe Mode steps; do not apply it to PS5 or Xbox.
