Arma 3 RCON usually fails because the server is reading a different BattlEye configuration file than the one you edited, the RCON port is blocked or collides with a game port, the password is wrong, or an unnecessary RConIP binding limits where BattlEye listens. Stop the server, edit the active BEServer.cfg (or BEServer_x64.cfg), set a separate open port and password, restart, verify the startup log, and connect to the server’s public IP using that exact port.
What Arma 3 RCON needs in order to work
Arma 3 remote administration uses BattlEye RCON, not the normal game connection. BattlEye reads its RCON settings from the BattlEye working directory used by the running server. The file is normally named BEServer.cfg; 64-bit server installations use BEServer_x64.cfg. A file with the right name in another directory does nothing.
Two directives are mandatory:

Bohemia Interactive uses 2301 as an example RCON port when the game server listens on 2302. That is an example, not a universal default. Choose an unused port appropriate for your host and open that same port at every network layer.
RConIP is optional. On an ordinary server with one public interface, leaving it out is the safest configuration while troubleshooting. A value such as 127.0.0.1 restricts listening to the local machine; a private or otherwise incorrect address can bind BattlEye to an interface your remote client cannot reach.

Fix the configuration in the file the server actually reads
1. Stop Arma 3 before editing
Shut down the dedicated server cleanly. Editing while it is running can leave you unsure whether the process has re-written the file or whether the next restart will load your changes. Do not begin testing until the old process has exited.
2. Find the active BattlEye directory
Check the launch command for a -BEpath parameter. That parameter identifies the BattlEye working directory and is the first place to look. If the command does not specify one, inspect the server’s startup output and the BattlEye folders created beside the dedicated-server files. Hosts may place this directory outside the folder you normally open in a control panel.

- Use
BEServer.cfgfor the standard server executable. - Use
BEServer_x64.cfgfor the 64-bit server.
If both files exist, do not assume they are interchangeable. Confirm which executable your service starts and which path appears in its launch parameters or log.
3. Add the required directives
Open the active file as an administrator and add one directive per line. A minimal configuration is:

RConPort 2301Replace the example password and port with your own values. Keep the password private and no longer than 32 characters; BattleMetrics documents that limit for ArmA 3 support. Use a separate password that is not reused for the game panel, operating-system account, or another service.

4. Remove an incorrect RConIP while testing
Delete any RConIP line temporarily unless you have a deliberate multi-interface design and know the address is the interface that should accept RCON traffic. This removes the most common binding mistake. You can add a verified address later, but it is not required for a normal single-interface installation.
5. Save the file where the process can read it
Check that the service account has permission to read the file and that the filename has not gained an extra extension such as .txt. A control panel may show one configuration directory while the launch script points to another. The decisive check is the startup log after the next restart, not the path displayed by an unrelated file manager.
Choose and expose a correct RCON port
Keep RCON separate from game ports
BattlEye requires RConPort to differ from the game server’s port or ports. If your game port is 2302, 2301 is a common example for RCON, provided no other service is using it. Do not enter the game port in an RCON client simply because players use that port to join. RCON is a separate listener.
Pick a free TCP port outside the range reserved by your hosting template, then record it. Check for collisions with another Arma instance, a query service, a voice server, or a panel agent. A collision can make the listener fail or cause you to reach a different process than the one you intended to administer.
Open every firewall and forwarding layer
The selected port must be allowed end to end:
- The operating-system firewall on the server must allow inbound traffic to the RCON port.
- A home or office router must forward that port to the server’s private address if the server is behind NAT.
- A cloud security group or virtual-network ACL must permit the port.
- Your hosting provider’s external firewall must permit it. Some providers expose a separate provider firewall; BattleMetrics specifically documents this additional rule for OVH GAME servers.
Apply the rule to the exact port in RConPort, not only to the game ports. If your provider does not offer port forwarding or custom inbound rules, ask whether the assigned port is reachable from the public internet or whether RCON is restricted to an internal network.

Test from outside the server’s network
A test made on the same machine can succeed even when public traffic is blocked. After restarting, test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot or a remote administration workstation. Use the server’s public IP address and the configured RCON port. Do not substitute the private address shown by the operating system, and do not assume that a successful player connection proves RCON is open.
Restart and prove that BattlEye loaded the change
- Start the dedicated server with the same launch command that normally runs it.
- Watch the startup log from the beginning, including the lines emitted while BattlEye initializes.
- Confirm that the log references the intended BattlEye working directory or configuration file and does not report a missing file, permission error, or bind failure.
- Check that no second Arma process is still holding the selected port.
- Only after the server is fully started, try the RCON connection.
If the log never mentions the file you edited, stop and correct the -BEpath or service configuration. Re-editing an inactive copy cannot change the running server. If the log reports that the port is already in use, select another free port, update the firewall and forwarding rules, and restart again.
Connect with the exact endpoint and credentials
In the RCON client, enter:
- The server’s public IP address or resolvable public hostname.
- The exact number from
RConPort. - The exact value from
RConPassword, respecting every character and the 32-character maximum.
Do not append the game port, use a private address from another network, or leave an old password saved in the client. If you changed the port or password, remove the saved profile and create a fresh one so an old value is not silently reused.
The client must support the BattlEye RCON protocol. When assessing an RCON tool, verify that it can target a custom port, handles BattlEye authentication, records connection errors, and exposes useful logs. A client designed only for another game or protocol can report a generic failure even when the server is configured correctly.
Diagnose the failure by its symptom
“Failed to connect” or a timeout
Start with reachability, not the password. Confirm that the server is running BattlEye, the client is aimed at the public IP, and the selected port is allowed by the host firewall, router, cloud security group, and provider firewall. Compare the configured port with the port in the client character by character. If the service is behind carrier-grade NAT or a provider-level network that does not supply inbound ports, public RCON may be impossible without a supported relay or a different hosting arrangement.

The connection is refused immediately
An immediate refusal usually means no process is listening on that address and port, or a firewall is actively rejecting it. Recheck the active BattlEye file, the executable architecture, the startup log, and port collisions. A listener on the wrong interface caused by RConIP can produce the same result from a remote network.
The client reaches the server but rejects authentication
Re-copy the password from the active configuration into the client instead of relying on a saved profile. Check for an accidental extra space, a line edited in the wrong file, or a password longer than the documented 32-character limit. Do not paste a password from a panel field unless you have confirmed that the panel writes the same BattlEye file the server reads.
RCON works locally but not remotely
This isolates the problem to binding or network exposure. Remove RConIP, restart, and test again using the public address from an external network. Then inspect each firewall and NAT layer for the RCON port. A local success does not validate public forwarding.
One RCON client works and another does not
Use the working connection as a control test. BattleMetrics notes that success with a second client points toward a networking, credential-handling, or service-path problem in the original client; failure with both clients points back to server configuration or network reachability. Compare protocol support, destination port, password storage, and the detailed error logs rather than changing the server randomly.
RCON disappears after an automatic restart
Bohemia Interactive documents a known BattlEye behavior: after an automatic restart that enables BattlEye on a password-protected server, you may need to reconnect manually. Reconnect to the BattlEye-enabled server before treating the missing session as a new configuration failure. If the listener is still absent after a manual reconnect, inspect the new process’s launch parameters and startup log; an automated restart may use a different working directory or executable.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence
Changing several variables at once makes the result impossible to interpret. Use this order:

- Remove
RConIPwhile testing. - Restart and verify BattlEye initialization and the selected port in the log.
- Test from the server itself only to confirm the service is alive, then test from another network to confirm public reachability.
- If remote access fails, check operating-system, router, cloud, and provider firewall rules in that order.
- Try a second BattlEye-compatible RCON client.
- Restore any intentional advanced settings only after a basic connection succeeds.
Keep a timestamped copy of the configuration and startup log for each attempt. That makes it clear whether a restart loaded the change or whether an automated panel reverted it.
Hosting-panel and multi-server complications
Managed hosts often generate BattlEye files from templates. A panel may overwrite your manual edit on restart, place each instance in a separate BattlEye directory, or expose only a subset of ports. For each instance, record its executable path, -BEpath, game ports, RCON port, and service account. Never reuse one instance’s RCON port for another.
If you cannot see the BattlEye directory or startup log, ask the provider to confirm the active path and whether inbound custom ports are supported. Give them the exact port and the time of a failed attempt. A provider support agent can verify an upstream firewall rule that is invisible from the guest operating system, but cannot correct a password in a file the server never reads.
Secure a working RCON endpoint
RCON is an administrative interface. Once connectivity is restored:

- Use a long, unique password within the 32-character limit and store it in a password manager.
- Limit the source IP range in a firewall when your provider and work pattern allow it.
- Do not publish the RCON port or password in a public configuration repository, screenshot, or support ticket.
- Rotate the password after sharing it with a contractor or after a suspected disclosure.
- Review connection and command logs for unexpected administrative activity.
Do not add an RConIP restriction as a substitute for firewall policy. A mistaken bind can lock out legitimate administrators without providing a complete access-control strategy.
What to collect before escalating
If the sequence above does not resolve the issue, collect a reproducible packet for support or a defect report:
- Exact Arma 3 server build and operating-system version.
- The complete launch command, including
-BEpath, with secrets removed. - The BattlEye directory path and whether the executable is standard or 64-bit.
- A sanitized copy of the active
BEServer.cfgorBEServer_x64.cfg; replace the password rather than posting it. - The selected RCON port, game-server ports, and a diagram of any NAT or port-forwarding layers.
- Operating-system firewall, cloud security-group, router, and provider-firewall rules for that port.
- The RCON client’s exact error text, version, and destination address.
- Server-log lines covering startup, BattlEye initialization, port binding, and the failed connection time.
