If an app is zoomed in, cropped, stretched, surrounded by bars, or fails to use your phone’s wide display, first identify whether the problem affects one app or the entire screen. A single-app problem usually requires that app’s aspect-ratio or full-screen setting, while a whole-screen magnification problem points to an accessibility setting. Change one display option at a time, close and reopen the app, and return to the default when full-screen mode distorts controls or cuts off content.
Identify what is actually wrong
“Incorrect display” describes several different problems. The right fix depends on whether the app is being magnified, resized, letterboxed, cropped, or rendered with a faulty layout. Before changing settings, open two or three other apps and compare them.
One app is affected
If other apps look normal, the phone’s general display scaling is unlikely to be the cause. The affected app may be enforcing a portrait orientation, using a fixed aspect ratio, or failing to adapt its layout to the wider panel. Android can expose a per-app display override on some devices, but the exact control depends on the phone maker, operating-system version, and app.
Everything is magnified
When icons, text, and the entire interface are enlarged across the phone, check accessibility magnification rather than the app’s full-screen preference. On iPhone, Apple’s Zoom feature can magnify the full screen or a movable window. Its setting is at Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Turning off Zoom, or changing its zoom region and maximum zoom, addresses system-wide magnification; it does not repair an app whose own layout is malformed.

Content is cut off
Cropped buttons, missing menu items, or text hidden behind the edge indicate that the app is not accommodating the available aspect ratio or display cutout. A full-screen override may make more of the app visible, but it can also move controls outside the usable area. If changing the mode makes clipping worse, restore the app default.
The image is stretched
Circles that become ovals, faces that look wider, or uniformly distorted graphics indicate non-proportional scaling. Android’s readiness guidance warns that layouts designed for standard portrait phone screens can fail on other aspect ratios and says to avoid stretched user-interface components. Stretching is a layout problem, not something a screen protector, case, or replacement display will solve.
There are black or unused bars
Bars at the sides or ends of the app usually mean it is preserving its original aspect ratio instead of filling the entire panel. This can be intentional. The app default may preserve readable text and correctly shaped graphics at the cost of unused screen area. Full-screen mode may remove the bars while introducing stretching or cropping, so compare both results rather than assuming that filling every pixel is better.
Use this safe troubleshooting sequence
- Record the symptom. Note whether the app is magnified, stretched, cropped, rotated incorrectly, or boxed by bars. Take a screenshot if the problem appears in screenshots; a screenshot that looks normal while the physical display is enlarged points more strongly to a system accessibility setting.
- Check the scope. Test another app in the same orientation. If all apps are enlarged, inspect accessibility magnification. If only one app is wrong, continue with that app’s display setting.
- Find the affected app’s display control. On Android, search Settings for terms such as Display, Full screen, Fit, or Aspect ratio. The menu name and location vary by manufacturer and software version.
- Change one setting. Select the app, switch to a different available mode, and avoid changing global font, display-size, and resolution settings at the same time. Isolating one change makes the result understandable and reversible.
- Close and reopen the app. Motorola’s support guidance says to close and reopen the app after changing its display option. If the change still has no effect, restart the phone.
- Compare the result. Check control visibility, the shape of images and text, orientation, and any camera cutout area. Keep the new mode only if it improves the specific symptom without creating another one.
- Restore the default when necessary. If the app becomes stretched, more heavily cropped, or difficult to operate, choose the app default or reset option and reopen it again.
- Contact the developer for a persistent defect. If every available mode is malformed, the app may need a layout or compatibility update. Include your phone model, operating-system version, app version, orientation, screenshots, and the display modes you tested.
Fix a single app on Android
Find the per-app aspect-ratio setting
Android does not use one universal settings path for display overrides. Open the Settings app and use its search field. Try Display, Full screen, Aspect ratio, App display, or Fit. On some phones, the control is under a display or home-screen section; on others, it appears in an app-information screen or a manufacturer-specific “full screen apps” list.
Open the entry for the affected app and read the available choices before selecting one. Common choices include a full-screen mode, a mode that preserves the app’s default ratio, and a reset-to-default action. A control may be absent because the manufacturer does not expose overrides, the software version does not support them, or the app has already declared a compatible configuration.

Use Android 14 or later options when supported
Android 14 and later can provide per-app aspect-ratio overrides on supported devices. Depending on the implementation, you may see a full-screen choice and an option to reset the app to its default behavior. “Supported” is important: Android version alone does not guarantee that every phone or every app will show the control. Manufacturer software and the app’s own orientation and resizability declarations determine what is offered.
After selecting full screen, reopen the app and test both portrait and landscape if the app supports them. A game, video player, camera preview, or productivity app may use different layouts in each orientation. If only one orientation is broken, report that detail rather than describing the entire app as unusable.

There is no universally best mode. Compare the three practical criteria: can you see and press every control, do circles and images retain their shape, and is the unused area acceptable? A mode that fills the panel but hides a navigation button is a worse result than one with narrow bars.
Apply the change correctly
- Open Settings and search for Full screen, Aspect ratio, Fit, or Display.
- Select the affected app from the results.
- Choose full screen, the available fit option, or the app default. Do not change several apps until you know which setting helps.
- Swipe the app away from the recent-apps list or use its normal close command.
- Launch it again and test the screen that was previously wrong.
- If nothing changed, restart the phone and test once more.
- If the layout is stretched or cropped, return to the app default or use the reset control.
Fix whole-screen magnification on iPhone
Check Apple’s Zoom setting
When the home screen, Settings, and multiple apps all appear enlarged, open Settings > Accessibility > Zoom. Apple’s Zoom feature can magnify the full screen or a movable window. Turn Zoom off to return to normal scale, or adjust its zoom region if you need magnification without having the entire interface enlarged.
After changing Zoom, reopen the app that looked incorrect. If the app alone still has bars, cropping, or a distorted layout while other apps are normal, the cause is likely the app’s own size and orientation handling rather than system magnification.

When an iPhone app alone looks wrong
The supplied platform guidance establishes the system Zoom path, not a universal iPhone per-app aspect-ratio override. For a single affected app, check the app’s own settings and update it through the normal App Store process if an update is offered. If there is no app-level display control and the layout remains defective, document the problem and contact the developer. Do not assume that forcing a different system-wide display setting will correct an app-specific layout.

Match the remedy to the symptom
Zoomed-in app or missing edges
- Test another app. If everything is enlarged, inspect iPhone Zoom or the equivalent Android accessibility magnification setting.
- If one Android app is affected, open its aspect-ratio or full-screen entry and test the app default first.
- Close and reopen the app after every change; restart the phone if the setting does not take effect.
- If text or controls remain outside the edge in every mode, treat it as an app compatibility defect and report it.
Stretched graphics or text
- Switch away from full screen and choose the app default.
- Check whether the distortion occurs only in landscape; include that orientation in a developer report.
- Do not judge a fix by screen coverage alone. Correct proportions are more important than eliminating bars.
Black bars or an app that will not fill the screen
- Confirm that the bars are confined to the app and are not part of a phone-wide display or resolution setting.
- On Android, test the available full-screen override if your device provides one.
- Keep the default if full screen causes stretching, cropping, or inaccessible controls. The cited guidance does not establish that every app can safely fill every wide panel.
Controls hidden behind a camera cutout or rounded corner
- Try the mode that preserves the app’s default ratio.
- Rotate the phone only if the app officially supports the other orientation; rotation is not a fix for a layout that is clipped in both directions.
- Report the exact screen and the control that is hidden. Android identifies orientation, aspect-ratio, resizability, and incorrect camera-preview orientation handling as common compatibility concerns.
Incorrect camera preview orientation
A camera preview can look rotated, squeezed, or offset even when the rest of the app is normal. Android’s device-compatibility documentation lists incorrect handling of camera-preview orientation among common sources of compatibility issues. Test the camera in both supported orientations, avoid judging the final photo solely from the live preview, and send the developer a screenshot or recording plus the phone’s orientation when the fault occurs.
Why wide displays expose app limitations
Phone screens now vary in width, aspect ratio, resolution, cutout shape, and orientation. An app designed around a narrower portrait canvas may position controls using fixed dimensions or assumptions about the available ratio. When the operating system gives it a wider window, those assumptions can produce empty bars, stretched components, clipped text, or controls that overlap the edge.
Android’s adaptive-app guidance summarizes the issue as follows: “Avoid stretched UI components: Layouts designed for standard, portrait phone screens can fail to accommodate other aspect ratios.” This is why a full-screen switch can change the appearance without correcting the underlying layout. The switch changes the window allocation; the developer must still make the interface responsive.
Android also states that compatibility issues occur most often because of app orientation restrictions, resizability and aspect-ratio restrictions, incorrect handling of camera-preview orientation, and misused APIs. These are developer-side conditions. A phone setting can provide a useful workaround, but it cannot rewrite an app’s layout logic.

When to undo an override
Restore the app default when any of the following occurs:
- Buttons or navigation labels disappear beyond the edge.
- Text overlaps, becomes unreadable, or is clipped by a cutout.
- Circles, photos, videos, or game characters are visibly stretched.
- The app opens in an orientation that prevents normal interaction.
- A camera preview is rotated or offset after the change.
- Touch targets move away from the visual controls.
Huawei’s support guidance specifically warns that enabling Full-Screen Display may cause some apps to display incorrectly, including by being improperly stretched. That warning is device-setting guidance, so its exact menu path should not be generalized to every Android phone. The practical lesson is broader: an override is optional, reversible, and worth keeping only when it improves usability.
Prepare a useful developer report
If the app remains malformed after testing its available display modes, the developer may need to correct its handling of different sizes and orientations. A precise report is more actionable than “the app is zoomed.” Include:
- Phone manufacturer and model.
- Android or iOS version.
- App name and version.
- Whether the problem affects portrait, landscape, or both.
- The exact symptom: stretched, cropped, magnified, rotated, or surrounded by bars.
- Whether other apps display normally.
- The display mode used before and after the problem appeared.
- A screenshot or screen recording, provided it captures the fault.
- The steps that reproduce the problem, including whether closing and reopening or restarting changed anything.
Android’s compatibility guidance identifies orientation, aspect-ratio, resizability, camera-preview orientation, and API usage as relevant areas for developers to inspect. Huawei likewise advises contacting the developer when its full-screen option does not solve the issue. If the phone offers no override, say that explicitly; it helps support distinguish a missing setting from a failed setting.
Prevent the problem from returning
Keep track of the working mode
When an app works only in one mode, record that choice in your phone notes. This is useful after a system update, app reinstall, or device reset, all of which can restore an app’s default display behavior.

Recheck after updates
An app update can fix a layout defect or change which aspect-ratio choices the operating system exposes. Conversely, a system update can rename or relocate the control. If the app changes after an update, repeat the one-setting-at-a-time process rather than assuming the previous override is still appropriate.
Do not stack unrelated display changes
Global font size, display size, resolution, accessibility magnification, rotation lock, and per-app aspect ratio can all affect what you see. Change only the setting relevant to the symptom, then reopen the app. Stacking changes makes it difficult to identify the cause and can leave the entire phone harder to use.
What this troubleshooting can and cannot fix
Built-in display controls can select among behaviors the phone and app already support. They can often remove unnecessary bars, restore the app’s intended ratio, or prevent a forced stretch. They cannot guarantee that an app designed for a narrow screen will become fully adaptive, and they cannot repair a broken camera-preview transform or a control placed outside the app’s safe area.

If no available mode is readable, proportional, and fully accessible, stop changing settings and send the developer the reproducible details. That is the point at which the defect belongs in the app rather than in the phone’s display configuration.
