Black bars, cropped split-screen panes, and a keyboard that hides the text field usually point to an Android window-compatibility problem—not a damaged display. The most effective sequence is to check the app’s per-app aspect-ratio setting, force a redraw by changing the window state, then isolate keyboard behavior from the app layout. Only use Android Debug Bridge (ADB) compatibility overrides as temporary diagnostic tests.

Why unusual aspect ratios cause these problems

Android applications are built for a range of window sizes, but some apps still assume a conventional phone shape. A foldable inner display, a tall cover screen, a tablet-like window, or a half-width split-screen pane can have dimensions and proportions the app was never designed to occupy.

Android calls the resulting bars letterboxing. Android Developers explains that letterboxing occurs often on large-screen devices because their dimensions and aspect ratios differ from those of standard phones for which many apps were designed. The system keeps the app inside a shape it considers safe instead of stretching the interface into an unsupported window.

Three app declarations are especially important:

  • Fixed orientation: the app requests portrait or landscape rather than adapting to rotation.
  • Fixed aspect ratio: the app declares a preferred shape or maximum ratio.
  • Non-resizable activity: the app does not promise that its activity can redraw correctly at arbitrary sizes, including split-screen.

When the current window conflicts with one of those declarations, Android can place the activity in a compatibility or size-compatibility mode. The system may add bars, constrain the usable area, or recreate the window when the configuration changes. This is why a problem can appear only after rotating, folding or unfolding, or entering split-screen.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

What you see Most likely explanation First check
Black bars on one or both sides of an app Letterboxing caused by a fixed orientation, fixed ratio, or non-resizable activity Per-app aspect-ratio or full-screen controls
The app is full width until you rotate or unfold A configuration change triggered size-compatibility handling Leave and re-enter the app after the window settles
Only the split-screen version is cropped The app does not support the available pane size or split-screen ratio Move the divider and check whether the app is marked resizable
The keyboard covers a button or text field The available window was not resized or the app does not handle insets correctly Repeat the test with another orientation or divider position
The layout jumps after the keyboard opens The app is reacting to a changed window height, sometimes combined with compatibility mode Close and reopen the keyboard after changing the window state

A bar that appears consistently around one older app is not evidence of a faulty panel. Compare another modern, resizable app at the same orientation and window size. If the other app fills the display, the issue is almost certainly app compatibility or a per-app policy.

Fix 1: check the app’s per-app display and aspect-ratio setting

This is the safest first intervention because it changes the policy for one app without altering the whole device. On supported large-screen devices, Android 14 QPR1 introduced a user-facing configuration menu for changing an app’s aspect ratio. Manufacturers may expose it under different names and may offer it only for selected applications.

Find the setting

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use Settings search for terms such as aspect ratio, full screen, app display, screen ratio, or compatibility.
  3. If search finds nothing, open the app’s App info page and inspect display-related sections. On some devices the control is in Display, Full screen apps, Advanced features, or a foldable-specific screen menu.
  4. Select the affected application and note every available mode before changing it.

Choose among the available modes

Typical choices are labelled Full screen, App default, and Compatibility, although the wording varies by manufacturer. Full screen asks the system to use the entire available display and is the logical test for side bars. App default restores the developer’s declared behavior. Compatibility preserves the constrained shape when stretching causes clipped controls, distorted graphics, or unusable touch targets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply one mode, close the app completely, and launch it again. Do not judge the result while the old activity is still on screen; the new policy may require the activity to be recreated. If full screen removes the bars but clips a menu or makes touch targets unreachable, return to App default or Compatibility and report the issue to the app developer.

The setting may be absent because the phone does not implement Android’s large-screen override UI, the app is excluded by the manufacturer, or the device is running an older release. Absence of the menu does not mean the display cannot show the app edge to edge; it means this particular user override is not exposed.

Fix 2: use letterbox positioning and redraw controls

Some Android builds provide controls for where a letterboxed window sits or for restarting its drawing. Android 13 added user education around positioning a letterboxed app and including it in split-screen. If your device shows a letterbox toolbar, handle, or overflow menu, use it rather than repeatedly force-stopping the entire phone.

Reposition the constrained window

  1. Launch the affected app in the orientation where the bars appear.
  2. Tap the letterbox control, overflow button, or the on-screen hint attached to the constrained window.
  3. Choose a position such as centered, left, right, top, or bottom if your device offers those choices.
  4. If an option says to use the app in split-screen, select it only after confirming that the app can operate in a narrow pane.

Positioning changes empty space; it does not make a non-resizable activity adaptive. If controls remain clipped, switch back to the app’s default or compatibility mode.

Trigger a redraw

When the system offers Restart, Redraw, or a similar letterbox action, apply it and relaunch the app. A redraw is useful when the app is still using measurements from the previous window. It cannot repair an app that permanently assumes a fixed ratio, but it can clear a stale layout after a fold or rotation.

Fix 3: force a clean window-state change

Rotation, folding or unfolding, and moving between full screen and split-screen are documented configuration changes that can trigger Android’s size-compatibility handling. Use one deliberate transition at a time so you can tell which state causes the failure.

After rotating

  1. Close the app or swipe it away from Recents.
  2. Rotate the phone and wait for the launcher and system controls to finish rotating.
  3. Open the app again in the new orientation.
  4. If it still shows the old geometry, return to the original orientation once, then rotate again and relaunch.

An app that is declared portrait-only may never fill a landscape window. In that case, the bars are a compatibility result, not a redraw failure.

After folding or unfolding

  1. Close the affected app before changing the device posture.
  2. Fold or unfold fully and wait for the display handoff to complete.
  3. Unlock or wake the device if necessary, then start the app from the current screen.
  4. Test both the cover and inner displays separately; they can expose different window sizes and different manufacturer policies.

If the app works on one display but not the other, record the display, posture, orientation, and app version when contacting the developer. That information distinguishes a foldable configuration problem from a general account or data problem.

After entering split-screen

  1. Open the first app and invoke your device’s split-screen command from Recents or the app’s window menu.
  2. Select the second app and wait for both panes to finish measuring.
  3. Move the divider a small distance, pause, and observe whether the affected app redraws.
  4. Exit split-screen, wait for full-screen mode to return, and enter split-screen again if the first attempt was cropped.

A pane that becomes usable only after moving the divider indicates that the app reacts to a minimum width or height threshold. A pane that never redraws is more consistent with a non-resizable activity.

Fix 4: treat keyboard problems as window-size problems first

When a software keyboard covers a text field, buttons disappear behind it, or the form jumps unexpectedly, start with the available window configuration rather than hunting for a universal keyboard switch. The keyboard reduces the app’s usable height, and the app must respond to that change. In split-screen, the starting height is already smaller, so an app that works in full screen can fail when the IME opens.

Run a controlled keyboard test

  1. Open the same form in full-screen portrait and note whether the field scrolls above the keyboard.
  2. Open it in full-screen landscape and repeat the test.
  3. Use split-screen, then move the divider before opening the keyboard.
  4. Close and reopen the keyboard after each divider change so the app receives a fresh window measurement.
  5. If possible, test the same field with the phone’s system keyboard and one installed third-party keyboard.

If only one keyboard causes the overlap, the IME’s resize, floating, toolbar, or suggestion behavior may be involved. If every keyboard covers the field only in split-screen, the app is more likely mishandling the reduced window. If the field is hidden in every mode, the app’s form layout or focus handling needs correction.

Why menu instructions cannot be universal

Keyboard menus differ by phone manufacturer, Android build, and keyboard application. One device may expose a setting for resizing the window, another may offer floating or one-handed modes, and another may place those controls in the keyboard toolbar. The available sources do not establish one universal path or one setting that fixes every overlap, so do not apply instructions written for a different device without checking its exact model and keyboard name.

As a practical workaround, dismiss the keyboard while navigating, rotate to the orientation with more vertical space, or enlarge the split-screen pane before typing. These actions change the window geometry and can make an otherwise hidden control reachable, but they do not repair the app’s layout code.

Use ADB overrides only as a diagnostic tool

Android documents temporary, package-specific compatibility overrides, including an override that allows an app to use available split-screen space and avoid letterboxing. These controls are intended for testing and evaluation. They do not modify the app’s source code, and they do not guarantee that buttons, touch targets, camera previews, or keyboard insets will work correctly.

When an override is appropriate

  • You are an app developer testing how a package behaves at a large or narrow width.
  • You can identify the exact application package and restore the original policy afterward.
  • You have already recorded the normal behavior so that you can compare the result.

When to avoid it

  • You need a reliable daily-use fix rather than an experiment.
  • The app handles payments, authentication, medical information, or other tasks where a clipped control could cause an error.
  • You do not have a recovery plan for undoing the package-specific setting.

Because the exact command and supported override names depend on the Android release and the test objective, use the compatibility-override instructions for your installed Android version and target package. Treat the result as evidence about the app’s resize behavior, not as proof that the app officially supports every aspect ratio.

What Android version changes mean for large screens

Android 14 QPR1

Android 14 QPR1 introduced a configuration menu that lets users change an app’s aspect ratio on supported large-screen devices. The menu is not guaranteed on every phone, tablet, foldable, or application. Manufacturer software determines its label, location, and eligibility.

Android 16 and smallest width of 600dp or more

Android 16 changes behavior on devices whose smallest width is at least 600dp: the system ignores orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions in the documented large-screen scenario. Apps targeting API level 36 have documented limitations, so the result can differ according to the app’s target API and the device’s implementation.

This change can make a previously letterboxed app occupy more of a tablet-like or unfolded window, but it can also reveal assumptions the app previously avoided. If a control moves off screen after an operating-system upgrade, test the app’s compatibility mode and check for an app update rather than assuming the display is malfunctioning.

Platform and OEM controls

AOSP exposes device-level controls for the maximum fixed-orientation letterbox aspect ratio and for whether split-screen aspect ratio is the default for non-resizable apps. These are platform or manufacturer configuration decisions, not ordinary phone-user settings. Changing them generally requires system-level control and can affect every application, so they are not an appropriate substitute for the per-app menu.

Choose the next step with a simple decision path

  1. Bars only in one app: check that app’s aspect-ratio or full-screen setting, then relaunch it.
  2. Bars appear after rotation, folding, or split-screen: close the app, perform one clean transition, and reopen it.
  3. Only the pane is cropped: move the divider and determine whether the app is resizable; use compatibility mode if stretching clips content.
  4. The keyboard hides the field: repeat the test in full screen, in another orientation, and with a different divider position before changing keyboard settings.
  5. No user setting exists: check the Android release and manufacturer documentation; do not assume a hidden universal toggle.
  6. You are diagnosing an app: use a temporary ADB compatibility override, record the package and Android version, and revert it after testing.

Information to collect before reporting an app bug

A useful report describes the window, not just the symptom. Include:

  • Phone or foldable model, Android version, and whether the display is the cover or inner screen.
  • App version and whether the app is installed from the normal store or another distribution channel.
  • Orientation, folded or unfolded posture, full-screen or split-screen state, and approximate divider position.
  • Whether the app is set to Full screen, App default, or Compatibility, if those options exist.
  • Keyboard name and whether the overlap occurs with the keyboard closed, open, or only after rotating.
  • A screenshot showing the bars or clipped control, with private information removed.

This detail lets the developer reproduce a specific window configuration instead of treating every large-screen complaint as the same defect.

What will not directly fix aspect-ratio compatibility

External accessories do not change Android’s activity declarations or the window insets delivered to an app. A Bluetooth keyboard, USB-C adapter, stand, case, or screen protector can be useful for other reasons, but none directly removes letterboxing, makes a non-resizable activity adaptive, or repairs a keyboard overlap caused by incorrect layout handling.

The durable fix is an app update that supports adaptive layouts, responds to window-size changes, and handles keyboard insets correctly. Device settings and compatibility overrides are ways to select or test a behavior that already exists; they cannot supply responsive interface code that the app does not contain.
