When an anime app will not play on a PS5, first determine whether the failure affects one episode, one app, every streaming service, or the console’s internet connection. Check service status, test the PS5 connection, update the app and system software, restart, and reinstall before attempting Safe Mode repairs. Crunchyroll users should also perform a complete power shutdown, unplug the PS5 for 30 seconds, and move the app from extended storage to Console Storage if necessary.
Retest playback after every step. This sequence separates an outage, catalog restriction, account problem, app fault, network issue, and console software problem without jumping straight to a factory reset or hardware purchase.
Use this order before changing deeper PS5 settings
- Write down the app, exact symptom, error code, affected show or episode, and when the problem started.
- Try another episode and another streaming app on the same PS5.
- Check PlayStation and the streaming provider’s status information.
- Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Update the streaming app and PS5 system software.
- Restart the PS5 and test the same title again.
- Delete and reinstall the affected app.
- For Crunchyroll, fully shut down the console, unplug it for 30 seconds, and check whether the app is installed on Console Storage.
- Only after those checks, try PlayStation’s license and Safe Mode cache/database options.
- Contact the app provider or PlayStation Support with complete diagnostic details if playback still fails.
Do not repeatedly reinstall during a confirmed outage. An outage will not be repaired by changing local files, and repeated downloads can obscure when the service actually recovers.
First identify what is actually failing
The scope of the failure is more useful than guessing at a cause. Before changing settings, compare the combinations below.

Keep the exact symptom separate from the diagnosis. “Won’t play” can mean the app never opens, a title is unavailable, playback stalls at a percentage, video is black while audio continues, or subtitles and sound drift. Support can solve the problem faster when those distinctions are preserved.
1. Record details and run comparison tests
Make a short note before troubleshooting. Include the app name, PS5 model if known, the exact on-screen message or error code, the show and episode, subtitle or dub selection, your region, and whether the failure began after an update or account change.
- Open a different episode in the same app.
- Open a different show in the same app.
- Open another streaming service on the PS5.
- If possible, play the same service and title on another device using the same account.
These comparisons create a useful boundary. If only one episode fails everywhere, local PS5 repairs are unlikely to change the catalog or source stream. If the app fails only on the PS5 while the service works elsewhere, continue with console and app troubleshooting.

2. Check for an outage and test the connection
Check service status first
Look at PlayStation’s status information and the anime service’s status or support page. If either reports an outage, wait for service recovery and retry later. Save the time of the outage and any incident wording if you need to contact support. Do not interpret an outage as a damaged PS5.
Run the built-in PS5 test
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Network.
- Select Test Internet Connection.
- Wait for the test to finish, then retry the affected app.
The test helps distinguish a console-wide connection problem from an app-specific failure. If several devices and apps lose connectivity, investigate the home network or internet service. If other PS5 services work normally and only one app fails, stay focused on that app rather than changing network hardware.
A passing connection test does not prove that every video stream is healthy; it only shows that the console can complete the system’s network checks at that moment. Playback comparisons and status information remain important.

3. Update the app and PS5 system software, then restart
Update the streaming app
- Highlight the affected app on the PS5 home screen.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Check for Update.
- Install any available update and wait for it to finish.
Launch the app again and test the same episode. If the app was already current, continue rather than repeatedly checking for the same update.

- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Open System Software.
- Select System Software Update and Settings.
- Install an offered update and allow the console to restart if requested.
Menus and support requirements can change with system releases. Use the version actually shown on your console when reporting the problem.
Restart and retest
Restart the PS5 from the control center after updates complete. Open the affected app only after the console has returned to the home screen, then test the previously failing title. A restart clears a temporary process state without deleting installed games or applications.
4. Reinstall the affected app
If the app remains broken after status, connection, updates, and a restart, remove the app and download it again from the PS5 media/app area or PlayStation Store.
- Highlight the affected app on the PS5 home screen.
- Press Options.
- Choose the delete or remove command shown for the app.
- Open the media/app area or PlayStation Store and download the app again.
- Sign in, choose the same profile and region, and test the title.
Reinstalling can replace damaged local app files, but it does not change regional licensing or repair a provider outage. If the same episode remains unavailable while other titles work, return to the catalog and region checks instead of repeating the installation.

Crunchyroll storage placement
Crunchyroll’s PS4/PS5 playback guidance specifically recommends moving the app to Console Storage if it is installed on extended storage. In the PS5 storage settings, use the move option for the Crunchyroll application, wait for the transfer to finish, and then test playback again. This instruction applies to Crunchyroll; do not assume another anime app has the same requirement.

5. Perform Crunchyroll’s complete power shutdown
For Crunchyroll playback problems, the service’s PlayStation-specific instructions call for more than selecting a quick restart:
- Turn the PS5 fully off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
- After the console has shut down, unplug its power cable.
- Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and start the PS5.
- Open Crunchyroll and test the same show or episode.
Use this sequence for Crunchyroll-specific playback symptoms such as buffering, freezing, black screens, or audio that does not match the picture. Other providers may publish different procedures, so apply their instructions rather than treating Crunchyroll’s steps as universal.
6. Check catalog availability, region, and account behavior
If one show or episode is missing while the rest of the service plays, a console repair is unlikely to add it. Anime catalogs vary by region and licensing window. Check whether the title is listed for your account’s region and whether a different subtitle or dub track is available.
Crunchyroll states that VPN use is unsupported and can cause playback or access problems. Disable a VPN or other location-masking configuration, then sign in again and retest. Do not use a VPN as a troubleshooting shortcut for a regional catalog restriction.
When reporting a catalog or playback issue, identify whether all shows fail or only specific episodes, and include the selected subtitle or dub. That information lets the provider distinguish a rights limitation from a broken stream.
7. Use licenses and Safe Mode only after simpler fixes
Restore licenses
PlayStation includes restoring licenses among its further troubleshooting steps for streaming-app launch problems. Use that option when the app opens or content entitlement appears inconsistent after you have checked status, updates, connection, restart, and reinstall. Restoring licenses does not substitute for correcting a regional availability restriction.

Clear the system software cache
PlayStation’s Safe Mode guidance describes clearing the system software cache as an option that can help with system-feature issues or performance drops. Use the console’s Safe Mode instructions to enter that menu, choose the cache-clearing action, allow it to complete, and then test the app.
Rebuild the database
Safe Mode’s database rebuild scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. It is a deeper maintenance step for persistent system behavior, not a first response to one unavailable episode. Close games and applications before starting, follow the on-screen instructions, and wait for the process to finish before launching the streaming app.
Do not select Reset PS5 as an early playback fix
Resetting the PS5 or reinstalling system software is fundamentally different from clearing cache or rebuilding the database. Reinstalling system software deletes console data. Do not use either destructive option merely because one anime episode will not play. Reserve a reset for a separately diagnosed system problem, after backups and PlayStation Support guidance.

The app will not launch or crashes immediately
- Check PlayStation and provider status.
- Update the app and PS5 system software.
- Restart the console.
- Reinstall the app.
- If it is Crunchyroll, perform the 30-second unplug procedure and check Console Storage.
- Use license restoration or Safe Mode cache/database options only if the launch failure remains.
Playback buffers or freezes
Try another title in the same app and another app on the PS5. Run the internet test, check for an outage, and restart after updates. If every app buffers, investigate the network; if only one service does, continue with that service’s reinstall and support path.
The screen is black but audio plays
Test a different episode and restart the app. A title-specific stream or app playback fault can produce a different result from a console-wide display problem. Record whether menus remain visible, whether subtitles appear, and whether the issue happens on every title before contacting support.

Audio and subtitles do not match the picture
Switch to another episode or language track. Note whether the mismatch follows one title, one subtitle or dub selection, or every video. Include those details in the provider report instead of describing the issue only as “video broken.”

Only one title is unavailable
Check regional catalog information and account availability first. Licensing can explain why one show is absent even when the app and console are functioning normally. A reinstall cannot change the provider’s rights for your region.
9. Prepare a support request that can be acted on
Contact the anime service when one app remains broken after its status check, network test, updates, restart, reinstall, and any provider-specific instructions. Contact PlayStation Support when multiple apps or broader console functions fail.
Include the following in one message:
- PS5 system software version.
- Streaming-app version.
- Your country or region.
- The exact error code or a screenshot of the message.
- Whether the app fails at launch or during playback.
- Whether every show fails or only named shows and episodes.
- Subtitle or dub selection and language.
- Whether other PS5 apps and another device can play the service.
- Results of the PS5 internet connection test.
- When the issue began and whether it followed an update.
Crunchyroll’s support intake specifically asks for console and software versions, app version, region, affected shows or episodes, subtitle or dub information, error details, and whether the crash occurs at launch or during playback. Supplying those fields up front avoids a long series of generic replies.
Crunchyroll PS5 software requirement
Crunchyroll lists PS5 as a supported device. On the supported-device page reviewed in 2026, it listed 6.00.00.00 as the minimum PS5 system software version. This requirement is changeable, so compare your console’s version with Crunchyroll’s live supported-device information when you troubleshoot; do not treat the reviewed number as a permanent requirement for every future release.
What not to buy or change first
- A wired cable, replacement console, or repair part is not established as a general fix by the official troubleshooting guidance.
- Do not factory-reset the PS5 to solve a single-app playback fault.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall while a provider outage is active.
- Do not use a VPN to work around a regional catalog restriction, especially for Crunchyroll, which states that VPN use is unsupported.
Software, status, account, catalog, and network checks should come before hardware spending. If those checks isolate a genuine console-wide fault, PlayStation Support can advise on the appropriate repair path.
