If your Pixel is not appearing as a webcam, first connect it with a USB cable that supports data, then unlock the phone and choose Webcam under Use USB for in the USB notification. The computer must support USB Video Class (UVC) to receive the video. If either the Webcam option is missing or the computer cannot see the camera, use the checks below to identify whether the issue is the cable, phone, USB port, or host compatibility.
First, identify what is failing
There are two different problems that are often described as “my computer won’t recognize my Pixel.” Separating them helps you avoid troubleshooting the wrong part of the connection.
- The Pixel does not offer Webcam: Start with the phone’s USB data connection. A charge indicator alone does not establish that the cable is carrying data.
- The Pixel offers Webcam, but no camera appears on the computer: Check whether the computer supports UVC, then isolate the cable, port, phone, and computer.
- The camera appears but its video pauses: Check whether another app or a video call is using the phone’s camera.
Google describes Pixel webcam mode as a USB feature, not a wireless connection. Its instructions require a cable that supports data and a receiving device that implements UVC. Google’s host examples include laptops, TVs, cars, and other phones and tablets, but those examples do not establish that every device or every app on a device will work. Google’s Pixel webcam instructions
Use the phone’s USB menu as the first dividing line. If Webcam is absent from Use USB for, focus on whether the phone has established a data connection. If you can select Webcam but the receiving computer still shows no camera, shift attention to the host’s UVC support and the computer’s USB detection. If the picture starts and then stops, camera access on the phone is a more relevant check than buying a new cable.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Connect the Pixel and choose Webcam
- Unlock the Pixel. Leave it unlocked while establishing the connection, especially if USB Protection is enabled on the device.
- Connect it directly to the computer using a data-capable USB cable. If you are unsure whether the cable transfers data, try another cable known to transfer files. Google warns that “Not all USB cables can transfer files.” Google Pixel Phone Help: Transfer files between your computer and Pixel phone
- Open the USB notification on the Pixel. It may say the device is charging through USB.
- Under Use USB for, select Webcam. The phone should then provide a Webcam notification, which you can use to preview and adjust the feed. Google Pixel Camera Help: Use your Pixel phone as a webcam
If the phone only charges, do not treat that as proof that webcam mode is ready. The charging connection can exist even when the cable or port is not providing a usable data connection.
Make one change at a time during setup. Connect the unlocked phone, open the USB notification, and check the available choices before changing anything else. If Webcam appears, select it and then check the computer. If it does not, switch to a known data-capable cable and repeat the same sequence. This makes the result easier to interpret than changing the cable, phone settings, and computer at once.
After selecting Webcam, use the phone’s Webcam notification to preview and adjust the feed. This confirms that you have selected the phone’s webcam mode, but it does not by itself prove that the computer can receive the stream. The receiving device still needs UVC support and must detect the USB connection.

Try a different data cable and USB port
Disconnect the phone and try a different cable that supports data, then connect to another USB port on the computer. A cable that only supplies power cannot carry the USB webcam feed. Google’s USB troubleshooting guidance recommends trying another cable and testing the phone and computer ports with other devices. Google Pixel Phone Help: USB connection troubleshooting
Keep the test simple: connect the Pixel directly rather than adding a hub or adapter unless one is required by the ports on your devices. If an adapter is necessary, it also has to preserve data connectivity. The documented requirement is data support; Google does not prescribe a particular cable brand, length, or speed rating for webcam mode.
Do not decide that a cable is suitable just because the phone charges when it is connected. The relevant distinction is data transfer: Google notes that not all USB cables can transfer files, and webcam mode also needs a data-capable cable. If you already have a cable that transfers files, try that before shopping for a replacement.
If you do need another cable, check the connectors against the ports on both devices, confirm that the product explicitly supports data transfer, and choose a length that works for your setup. The official instructions do not call for a specific brand, cable length, speed rating, or other special specification. Avoid paying for a feature you have not established as necessary; the requirement to verify is data support.
Check whether the phone and computer ports work independently
To distinguish a phone-side problem from a computer-side problem, test the Pixel with another computer if one is available. Then test the computer’s USB port with another data-capable device. A cable that works for charging is not a sufficient test of the port’s data function. Google recommends these cross-checks as part of its USB troubleshooting steps. - SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Change only one part of the connection for each comparison. For example, keep the Pixel and cable the same while trying a second computer port. Then keep the computer port and cable the same while checking the Pixel with another computer. If another data-capable device also fails on the original port, that is a reason to investigate the computer’s USB connection rather than attributing the problem only to the Pixel. If the Pixel works on another computer, the first computer or its setup deserves attention.
These are isolation tests, not guarantees that one component is defective. A successful test on another host shows that the Pixel can provide a webcam stream in that test setup; it does not establish that all computers, ports, or applications will work the same way.
Install available Android updates and restart the Pixel
Install any Android system updates available for the phone, restart it, reconnect the cable, and check Use USB for again. Google recommends updating and restarting the Pixel when USB transfer is not working. These are general USB troubleshooting steps; they do not guarantee that an update will add webcam mode to a phone that does not support or expose the feature. Google Pixel Phone Help: Transfer files between your computer and Pixel phone
After restarting, repeat the connection in order: unlock the Pixel, connect with the data-capable cable, open the USB notification, and look for Webcam under Use USB for. If it is still absent, continue checking the cable and ports rather than assuming that Android version alone explains the result.
If Webcam is selected but the computer shows no camera
Confirm the computer can receive a UVC camera
The host computer or other receiving device must implement USB Video Class (UVC). This is the compatibility requirement Google identifies for Pixel webcam mode. A device may have USB ports and still not provide a compatible UVC camera input, and compatibility of the host does not establish that every video-call or camera application will list the feed. Google Pixel Camera Help: Use your Pixel phone as a webcam
If you have access to another UVC-capable host, connect the Pixel to it and select Webcam. If the feed works there, the original computer or its software is the next place to investigate. If it does not, continue testing the cable and phone connection rather than assuming the original computer is the cause.
UVC is the host-side requirement in Google’s instructions; it is not a guarantee about a particular computer model or application. Google lists several kinds of receiving devices as examples, but does not state that every laptop, TV, car, phone, tablet, or camera application will recognize the Pixel. When troubleshooting, treat “has a USB port” and “supports UVC webcam input” as separate questions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteLikewise, selecting Webcam on the Pixel and seeing a preview in its notification are useful checks of the phone side, but they do not remove the need to verify the host. If the phone is in Webcam mode and the stream is not visible on one computer, a test on another compatible host can help distinguish a host-specific issue from a phone or cable issue.

On Windows, check hardware detection and restart
Google recommends checking that automatic hardware detection is enabled on Windows and restarting the computer. The support guidance does not specify a universal Windows settings path for this check, so the exact control can vary by Windows version and configuration. After restarting, reconnect the Pixel and select Webcam again.
When repeating the test, use the same known data-capable cable and note whether Windows detects any USB device at all. If changing to another computer port changes the result, continue with the port comparison. If the phone’s Webcam option is present but Windows does not show a camera, keep UVC support and automatic hardware detection in view rather than treating the charging symbol as evidence that the camera stream has reached the computer.
Test the computer port and another computer
Try another USB port, then connect the Pixel to a different computer if possible. Also connect another data-capable device to the original computer’s port. These comparisons help isolate whether the failure follows the phone, the cable, or one computer’s USB connection. Google recommends testing both sides this way in its general Pixel USB troubleshooting. Google Pixel Phone Help: Transfer files between your computer and Pixel phone
Recommended Free Tools
Compare the outcomes rather than repeating the same connection without a change. If the Pixel works on a second computer, the original computer’s port, detection settings, or compatibility are more pertinent. If another data-capable device also fails on the original port, that port is worth checking. If the Pixel fails across hosts and ports, return to the phone and cable checks, make sure the phone is unlocked, and confirm that Webcam is actually selected.
If the webcam feed pauses after it starts
A paused feed can be a camera-access conflict rather than a USB recognition failure. Google says the Pixel webcam stream pauses when another app or a video call takes camera access, then resumes automatically when that camera use ends. Close the other camera-using app or finish the call and allow the stream to resume. Google Pixel Camera Help: Use your Pixel phone as a webcam
This behavior is different from the computer never recognizing the Pixel. If the feed worked and then paused, first end the other camera use and wait for the webcam stream to resume. Disconnecting, replacing the cable, or changing computer ports is not the first test for this specific symptom.
Check USB Protection only when it applies
On supported devices where Advanced Protection Mode’s USB Protection is enabled, a locked phone can block establishment of a new USB data connection. Unlock the Pixel before connecting or allowing the new connection. Google identifies Pixel 6 and later as within the supported-device scope for this protection feature; it is a conditional explanation, not a general cause of every webcam problem. Google Android Help: Protect your Android device from USB threats with Advanced Protection Mode
Keep this check conditional. It is relevant if the protection is enabled and the phone was locked when the new USB connection was attempted. It is not a reason to assume that every locked Pixel, every cable, or every missing Webcam option has a security block. Unlock the phone and establish the connection again before moving on to the ordinary cable, port, update, and host checks.

What Pixel webcam mode does—and does not establish
Google’s current help page describes webcam mode over a data-capable USB connection to a UVC host. It does not state a universal minimum Pixel model or Android release. In particular, the presence of Android 14 by itself is not evidence that every Android phone supports this feature. Check whether Webcam is actually offered on the particular Pixel after connecting it, and install available system updates if USB behavior is not working. Google Pixel Camera Help: Use your Pixel phone as a webcam
That distinction matters if the problem began after an update or if you have seen reports about a Pixel model not being detected. User reports can describe the same symptom, but they do not establish the feature’s compatibility requirements. For a particular phone, the practical check is whether its USB menu offers Webcam when connected with a data-capable cable. Google’s page does not supply a universal model or Android-version cutoff to use instead.
While webcam mode is active, Google says the Pixel charges normally. You can continue using the phone or turn off its screen while streaming. One limitation is that Pixel devices do not support receiving a UVC webcam stream from another Pixel; the documented direction is using a Pixel as the webcam for a compatible host. Google Pixel Camera Help: Use your Pixel phone as a webcam
These operating details can help avoid misreading normal behavior. Charging while the stream is active does not mean the mode failed. Turning the screen off is also allowed, so an active stream does not require you to keep the display on. But if another app or call takes camera access, the stream pauses until that use ends.
Use this order to narrow down the cause
- If Webcam is absent, unlock the phone and test with a known data-capable cable.
- Try another USB port, and cross-test the Pixel and computer with other devices where possible.
- Install available Android updates and restart the Pixel before reconnecting.
- If Webcam is selectable but no feed arrives, check UVC support and test another compatible host.
- If the feed starts and then pauses, close the other app or call using the camera.
- Consider USB Protection only if it is enabled on a supported device and the phone was locked when the new connection was attempted.
Keep track of which stage succeeds: the phone offers Webcam, the phone enters Webcam mode, and the host receives a camera feed. Each stage answers a different question. A missing option points first to the USB data connection or, conditionally, USB Protection. A selectable option with no host feed makes UVC compatibility and computer detection more important. A feed that pauses points to camera use on the Pixel.
