If an Android weather widget names the wrong town, start by identifying which app supplies it. Android has no single weather-widget settings screen: the provider app’s location permission, the phone’s global Location switch, and the widget’s own city selection are separate controls. Turn on device Location, allow the provider to use location (with precise location on Android 12 and later when appropriate), then check whether the widget is configured for a fixed city. If the provider app is correct but the home-screen tile is stale, follow that provider’s refresh or re-add procedure instead of changing unrelated system settings.

Identify the app that powers the widget
Look at the widget’s design and open its settings or app info to determine whether it comes from Samsung Weather, AccuWeather, Google’s weather display or Pixel At a Glance, or another downloaded app. The correct permission belongs to that provider, not necessarily to every weather app installed on the phone. A Samsung Weather widget can use Samsung’s Weather app, while a downloaded widget can depend on its own application even when both show similar forecasts.

Google’s weather display and Pixel At a Glance may be integrated into the launcher rather than installed as a separate weather-widget app. In that case, inspect the component named by App info and check the Google app or launcher settings it exposes. Do not assume that a Samsung, Pixel, and third-party widget share the same reset command.
Check Android’s two location controls
Turn on device Location
- Open Settings.
- Choose Location.
- Turn on Use location.
This is the device-level switch. Granting a weather app permission while this switch is off still leaves the app without a usable device location. Menu names can differ by Android release and manufacturer skin, but the Location section normally contains the global control. If you use a quick-settings tile to turn Location off later, the widget can stop updating even though its app permission remains unchanged.
Grant the provider app an appropriate location permission
- Open Settings and go to Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications).
- Select the app that supplies the widget.
- Open Permissions, then Location.
- Choose a permission offered by your Android version, such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Some versions also offer Allow all the time.
Use the least access that supports the widget’s behavior and matches your privacy preference. Do not grant all-the-time access automatically; whether a widget can update with foreground-only access depends on the provider and Android version. If the widget stops updating when the app is not open, check the provider’s own documentation before expanding permission. A permission granted to a different weather app does not help the app that actually draws this widget.
Enable precise location when the provider needs it
On Android 12 and later, the Location permission screen can include a Use precise location switch. Approximate access describes an area of about 3 square kilometers, while precise access shares the device’s more exact position. Those are permission-granularity descriptions from Android, not a promise that a forecast is calculated at a particular resolution. A widget that selects a nearby town may still do so even with precise access enabled.
If the widget is intended to follow your current position, enable precise location for that provider when you are comfortable doing so. If you deliberately want only an approximate area, leave it off and select a city manually so the widget does not keep switching between nearby localities. Android 12’s precise switch is per app: enabling it for Maps or another service does not silently enable it for the weather provider.
Check Location Accuracy and the signals your phone can use
Android’s device-level Location Accuracy is separate from an app’s precise-location permission. On supported devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, and device sensors. Combining signals can produce a location sooner indoors or near tall buildings where GPS reception is obstructed.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Look for Location Services, Location Accuracy, or a similarly named option.
- Review the setting and turn on the accuracy service if you want Android to use the available supporting signals.
Not every phone exposes the same controls, and the available signals vary by device, region, and connection. Location Accuracy does not override a provider app’s denied permission, and precise app permission does not turn Location Accuracy on. Treat them as two checks: the app must be allowed to request location, and the device must be able to estimate it reliably. If you are indoors, surrounded by tall buildings, or have recently disabled Wi-Fi scanning, an estimate can take longer even when the widget is configured correctly.

Decide whether you want current location or a fixed city
For a widget that follows you
Use the provider’s current-location option, keep device Location enabled, and allow the provider an appropriate permission. After changing settings, open the provider app once so it can request a fresh position, then return to the Home screen and wait for the widget’s next update. A phone that has just moved may continue showing its previous locality until the provider refreshes.
Test after moving a meaningful distance rather than expecting a new town label immediately after crossing a street. Keep a network connection available while the app obtains weather data, and compare the widget with the provider app before concluding that the location is wrong.
For a widget that always shows one chosen place
Select the city inside the widget or provider app instead of relying on live location. This is useful for a home town, a workplace, or a family member’s city. A “wrong” location in this case can simply be a stored choice that no longer matches what you intended.
Samsung’s support guidance for its Weather widget explains that the widget can use the current location by default and can also have a location added manually. Touch and hold the Samsung widget, open its settings, and use the location controls to add or select the desired city; the wording and screen arrangement can vary by One UI version and region. A fixed city is often the more predictable choice for a home-screen widget on a tablet or a phone that is normally used in one place.
Refresh or recreate the widget using provider-specific guidance
Samsung Weather
First verify the Samsung Weather app’s Location permission and the phone’s global Location switch. Then open the widget’s own settings and inspect the selected city. If a manually selected city is present, replace it or switch back to current location. Samsung’s support pages are region-specific, so a Pakistan or US support page may show slightly different labels from those on your device. Follow the controls that appear on your phone rather than searching for an identically named menu.
AccuWeather
AccuWeather’s guidance for its overhauled widget is to delete the old widget, add the widget again, and choose a location during setup. The practical sequence is:
- Touch and hold the AccuWeather widget and remove it from the Home screen.
- Add a new AccuWeather widget from the launcher’s widget picker.
- When prompted, select the desired city or allow the provider to use current location.
- Open the app and confirm that its location view agrees with the widget.
For a widget that will not display or continues to fail, AccuWeather also lists updating the app, reinstalling it, or rebooting the phone, followed by contacting AccuWeather support if the problem remains. These are AccuWeather recommendations, not a universal Android reset procedure. Try the reversible permission and location-selection checks first; reinstalling can remove saved settings and is unnecessary when only a city choice is wrong.

Google weather display and Pixel At a Glance
Google’s weather display and Pixel At a Glance can be integrated into the launcher rather than presented as a separate weather-widget app. Check the Google app or the app identified in the widget’s App info screen, then review its Location permission and the device Location switch. Pixel user-community discussions sometimes suggest changing precise-location settings, but those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a guaranteed fix. If the Google app itself names the correct place while At a Glance does not, treat the issue as a stale or provider-specific display problem and use the launcher’s available refresh or configuration controls.

The widget names a neighboring town
Open the provider app and view its complete location details, not just the short label shown on the widget. Weather services can associate a coordinate with a nearby town name, and the sources reviewed do not establish that every locality receives a distinct forecast point. If the provider app shows the same nearby place, changing Android permissions may not change the label. Select your preferred city manually if the provider offers that option.
The widget is correct at home but wrong after travel
Confirm that a fixed city was not selected during initial setup. If it was not, verify Use location, the provider’s permission, and precise location where available. Open the provider app after moving and leave the phone with a data connection long enough for a fresh update. If the app updates but the tile does not, remove and re-add the widget using the provider’s instructions.
The location is correct but the temperature differs from another app
This is not automatically a location failure. Different services can use different forecast sources, update times, or nearby forecast points. Compare the named place and full location view in each provider before changing settings. - Open the provider app and complete any location prompt it presents.
- Only after those checks, try the provider’s update, reboot, reinstall, or support procedure.
Common pitfalls that waste time
- Changing the wrong app: Installing or granting permission to another weather app cannot repair a widget supplied by Samsung, Google, AccuWeather, or a different provider.
- Confusing approximate permission with a forecast radius: Android’s “about 3 square kilometers” description explains what location data an app receives; it does not define how a weather service chooses a forecast point.
- Assuming precise permission fixes every town label: A provider can still display a nearby locality name or a manually selected city.
- Granting all-the-time access by habit: Use the permission level the provider requires and that fits your privacy preference. More access is not automatically a better fix.
- Clearing data too early: Data clearing can remove saved locations and settings. Recheck the selected city and use documented re-add steps first.
- Expecting identical readings: Two apps can update at different times or use different nearby forecast points, so a temperature difference alone is not proof of a location error.
- Following another phone’s menu exactly: Android version, manufacturer skin, region, and provider updates can change labels and screen order.
Costs, accessories, and when to stop troubleshooting
This is a software-configuration problem. You do not need a GPS accessory, weather instrument, repair kit, or other hardware to correct the widget’s city. The relevant fixes are Android settings, the provider’s city selector, an app update, or a provider-specific widget recreation. A different weather app can be a practical fallback if the current provider remains unreliable, but switching apps is optional and may introduce a different permission model.
If the provider app and widget still disagree after permissions, city selection, and the provider’s documented refresh steps, record the Android version, phone model, provider name, selected city, and whether the app itself shows the correct place. Give those details to the provider’s support team. Avoid promising a universal cache-clearing recipe: the official guidance differs by provider, and an unsupported reset can delete useful configuration.

Protect privacy while fixing the widget
Location permission is a privacy decision as well as a troubleshooting setting. Approximate permission may be sufficient when you intend to display a broad area or a fixed city. Precise permission gives the provider a more exact position, which can help it choose a nearby locality but reveals more location detail.
