If an Android game on your PC ignores your mouse or keyboard, first check the game’s compatibility label, then use the right control settings: optimized games have in-game Game Controls settings, while touch-first games may need keyboard-to-touch remapping. This guide covers Google Play Games on PC. It does not give instructions for connecting peripherals directly to an Android phone or tablet.

The key distinction is whether the game supports PC input natively, needs its on-screen touch controls mapped, or has a compatibility limitation that settings cannot fix. Following those possibilities in order helps avoid changing a working keyboard or mouse when the issue is actually the game’s control design.

First identify what “not working” means

A mouse or keyboard that works elsewhere on your PC can still be ignored by a particular Android game. The game may be designed around touch, its PC support may be limited, or its controls may need to be configured in Google Play Games. Start with the game’s details page in Google Play Games on PC and check its compatibility label before changing settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It also helps to identify the exact symptom. Does neither device produce any response? Does movement work but an action button does not? Does the game launch but fail to show usable PC controls? These are different situations: an optimized game may offer configurable controls in its own Game Controls settings, while a touch-first title may need an input mapped to an on-screen touch target. If the game has no suitable touch target for an action, remapping cannot invent one.

Google’s labels describe the game’s status in the service; they are not a diagnosis of your physical keyboard or mouse. Google also cautions that a label reflects testing at a point in time and may not reflect the newest game version or every PC configuration. In other words, a label is a useful first check, not a promise that every device, game version, and control arrangement will behave identically.

What the compatibility labels mean

Label What it tells you What to try
Optimized The game is designed for PC and uses its optimized PC controls rather than the Controls Editor. Open the game’s Game Controls settings and adjust the mappings available there.
Playable Google says the game has been tested for stability, at least 30 frames per second, and mouse and/or keyboard support. The label does not promise that both devices work for every action. Check the game’s Game Controls settings or, if it is not using optimized PC controls, try remapping its on-screen touch controls.
Untested Google has not tested the game on PC. It may still work, but the label is not a compatibility guarantee. You can try available controls, but do not treat failure as proof that your peripherals are defective.
Unsupported Google has identified technical issues that may prevent the game from operating correctly. Check the game’s own support options. The available Google documentation does not promise a control workaround for an unsupported game.
Not available The game cannot be played through Google Play Games on PC for your current computer or the current catalog. Control remapping cannot make a game available through the service.

These labels describe meaningfully different outcomes. Untested means the service has not confirmed how the title behaves on PC; it does not mean Google has determined that the game cannot work. Unsupported is a stronger warning: Google has identified technical issues that may prevent correct operation. Not available is about access through the service on the current PC or in the current catalog, rather than a missing key assignment.

Playable is also a baseline rather than a promise of a particular layout. Google’s stated test criteria include stability, at least 30 frames per second, and support for a mouse and/or keyboard. “And/or” matters: the badge does not guarantee that both devices are used for every in-game action. Nor does it mean every action can be customized. For a Playable game, the next useful question is whether its PC controls are optimized or whether its touch controls need mapping.

Choose the correct control method

There are two different paths, and using the wrong one can make it seem as if the controls are missing. Optimized PC controls are adjusted through the game’s Game Controls settings. The Controls Editor is for mapping PC keys or mouse inputs to touch targets in games that do not already have optimized PC controls. Google says the editor is unavailable for games with optimized controls.

Think of the first path as configuring controls the game already provides for PC. The second path translates a key press into an interaction with a touch control shown on the game screen. The Controls Editor is not a general switch that converts every mobile title into a fully PC-native game; the available touch targets and supported remapping options set the limit.

For an optimized PC game

  1. Open the game in Google Play Games on PC.
  2. Open the game’s Game Controls settings.
  3. Review and adjust the mappings that the game makes available.
  4. Return to the game and test the affected action. If the setting you need is not offered, the game may not expose that action as a configurable PC control.

Do not look for Remap controls in the Controls Editor for an optimized game; its absence is expected for this control path.

If an optimized game responds to some inputs but not others, keep the test focused on the action that fails. Review the available Game Controls settings for that action rather than switching to the touch remapping workflow. Google says the editor is unavailable for games with optimized controls, so not seeing the editor does not by itself indicate a broken client or a missing installation component.

For a touch-first game without optimized PC controls

  1. In windowed mode, click Game Controls on the left side of the game window.
  2. In fullscreen, press Shift + Tab, then select Remap controls.
  3. Select Edit to add or change controls.
  4. Place a control over the matching on-screen touch target. Assign a keyboard key to a touch button, or map movement to a virtual joystick when the game provides a suitable on-screen joystick.
  5. Save or finish the edit as presented by the interface, then test the action in the game. Move or revise a mapping if it does not line up with the touch target or conflicts with another action.

A mapping sends an input to a touch control; it does not create a control that the game itself does not have. There is no universal layout: button positions and useful key assignments depend on the game’s on-screen controls and the actions you need.

When placing a mapping, match it to the actual touch interface visible in the game. A virtual joystick mapping belongs over the game’s on-screen movement joystick, if one is present; a mapped button belongs over the corresponding touch button. If the mapping is offset, or a different target sits underneath it, the result can look like an unresponsive key even though the key has been assigned. Correct placement and assignment are therefore separate checks.

Test one action at a time. For example, first check whether the movement mapping triggers the on-screen joystick, then test a separate action button. If movement responds but an action does not, revisit that action’s target and assignment instead of rebuilding all controls. If no suitable on-screen target exists for the action, the editor has nothing to map for it. The control mapping can reproduce a touch interaction; it cannot add a game feature.

Use the remapping controls available in your client

Google’s release notes describe additions to the Controls Editor over time. Keyboard mappings for virtual buttons and virtual joysticks were introduced in January 2025. An Aim and shoot control for supported games was added in January 2026. In June 2026, Google added a mouse-scroll-wheel Zoom control that simulates pinch-to-zoom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To look for remapping options in fullscreen, press Shift + Tab and choose Remap controls. These features are not universal game capabilities: the release notes do not establish that every game supports every control. If an option is unavailable, first check whether the game uses optimized PC controls; even in the editor, support can depend on the game and its touch interface.

The dates matter because the set of editor options has changed over time. The January 2025 additions let players map keyboard input to virtual buttons and virtual joysticks. The January 2026 Aim and shoot option is for supported games, and the June 2026 Zoom option uses the mouse scroll wheel to simulate a pinch-to-zoom gesture. These are specific control features, not a guarantee that all games expose the matching touch behavior or can use every option.

If an option is missing, use the distinction between game controls and editor controls to narrow down the reason. An optimized title uses its Game Controls settings rather than the editor. A non-optimized title may use the editor, but the exact set of controls still depends on that game and its on-screen interface. The existence of a feature in Google’s release notes does not mean it applies to every catalog game.

Work through the problem in order

1. Check whether the game is meant to accept the input

Use the compatibility label and the control method above to distinguish a game-support limitation from a setup problem. A Playable label indicates mouse and/or keyboard support under Google’s stated test criteria, not necessarily both inputs or every control scheme. For Untested games, PC behavior has not been confirmed by Google. For Unsupported games, technical issues may prevent correct operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Then decide which category fits the symptom. If the game is labeled Optimized, start in Game Controls. If it is touch-first and offers suitable touch controls, try mapping them. If it is Untested, you can test what the client makes available, but there is no Google compatibility confirmation to rely on. If it is Unsupported or Not available, repeated changes to key assignments are unlikely to resolve the underlying status.

Remember that Google’s badge can reflect one-time testing and may not match a newer game version or all hardware configurations. If a title’s behavior seems inconsistent with its label, that caveat leaves room for differences; it does not establish that a particular setting or peripheral is at fault.

2. Check the mapping before changing hardware

If the game is touch-oriented, open the Controls Editor and confirm that the key or mouse control is mapped to the intended on-screen target. Check that a virtual joystick is positioned over the game’s movement control, that buttons line up with their targets, and that the assignment corresponds to the action you are testing. Change one mapping at a time and test it in the game so you can identify which adjustment matters.

Separate a key-assignment problem from a placement problem. An assigned key can still fail to trigger the intended action if its control is positioned over the wrong part of the screen. Conversely, a control placed over the correct target still needs an input assigned to it. Verify both elements before concluding that the game cannot be mapped.

For a mouse-specific issue, check which mouse function you expect the game to use. Google’s June 2026 release notes specifically describe a scroll-wheel Zoom control for supported games. That is not evidence that every game supports ordinary mouse movement, clicks, or every other mouse action through the editor. Use only the controls the game and current client actually expose.

Replacing a working keyboard or mouse does not add missing game-level support. Hardware is worth investigating only if the device also fails outside this game or the PC does not recognize it; the documented remedy for a touch-first game is software mapping, not a new peripheral.

3. Restart the client and check for updates

  1. Exit Google Play Games on PC and open it again.
  2. Check whether an update is available and install it.
  3. If updating fails, Google’s troubleshooting guidance lists reinstallation as a next step.
  4. Reopen the game and check its control settings again.

A restart is a sensible early check when the client itself seems to be malfunctioning. If an update is available, install it before testing the controls again. If the update process fails, Google lists reinstallation as a next step. After reopening the client, return to the same game and the same control path so you can see whether anything changed.

These client steps address client problems; they do not change a game’s compatibility label or guarantee that the game supports a particular input. If the client opens normally but one title still ignores a control, continue to examine that title’s label and settings rather than repeating installation steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Verify PC requirements and virtualization

Google lists these minimum PC requirements for Google Play Games on PC:

  • Windows 10 version 2004
  • An SSD with 10 GB of available storage
  • 8 GB of RAM
  • Four physical CPU cores
  • Hardware virtualization enabled

During setup, Windows Hypervisor Platform may need to be turned on, followed by a restart. Google also says CPU virtualization in the BIOS is needed for many games in the catalog. These checks are most relevant when Google Play Games or games are failing to run properly; meeting them does not guarantee that an individual game supports a particular input.

Read the requirements as checks for the PC and service setup, not as control instructions. The listed storage requirement is 10 GB free on an SSD; the memory requirement is 8 GB RAM; and the processor requirement is four physical cores. Hardware virtualization also needs to be enabled. If setup prompts for Windows Hypervisor Platform, turning it on may require restarting the PC. Google says BIOS CPU virtualization is required for many catalog games, so a game or client problem may warrant checking that setting as well.

These requirements help distinguish a machine or virtualization issue from a mapping issue. If Google Play Games does not set up or games are not running properly, check them. If the service is running and the only problem is a specific action in one game, start with that game’s compatibility label and control configuration. Satisfying minimum system requirements does not turn an Unsupported title into a supported one.

5. Consider availability and graphics-related issues

Google notes that game availability problems can result from PC compatibility conditions, including processor restrictions or outdated graphics drivers. If the game will not launch or is unavailable, check the service’s compatibility guidance rather than treating the symptom as a keyboard-mapping fault. Updating graphics drivers may address an availability or compatibility issue, but it does not create controls that the game lacks.

In particular, do not confuse a game that cannot be played through the service on the current computer with one that launches but has a control problem. The Not available status concerns the current PC or catalog; remapping is not a way to bypass that limitation. Processor restrictions and outdated graphics drivers are among the PC compatibility factors Google identifies for availability problems, so they are relevant when access or launch is the symptom.

Know when a workaround is not established

If a game is Unsupported, is unavailable for your PC, or has no suitable on-screen touch targets to map, the official guidance does not establish a reliable remapping fix. The Controls Editor can map inputs to touch controls; it is not a general-purpose way to add native mouse and keyboard support to any Android game. Contact the game’s support channel about its own controls, or choose a title labeled Optimized or Playable if PC input support is important.

There is also no need to buy a different keyboard or mouse simply because one mobile game does not respond. A basic wired keyboard and mouse can be useful if you do not already have working PC input hardware, but the accessory itself cannot provide a missing mapping or make an Unsupported game compatible. For a title that does not have PC controls, the relevant question is whether its touch targets can be mapped in the software.

Also keep the scope in mind: these steps concern Android games running through Google Play Games on a Windows PC. They should not be assumed to describe how to attach or configure a mouse and keyboard directly on an Android phone or tablet.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my keyboard work on my PC but not in one Android game?

PC input support varies by game. The game may be touch-first, may need its on-screen controls mapped, or may have a compatibility limitation. Check the game’s Google Play Games on PC label, then use Game Controls for optimized PC controls or the Controls Editor for a touch-first game that can be mapped.

Why can’t I find the Controls Editor?

Optimized PC games do not use the Controls Editor; Google says to change their mappings in the game’s Game Controls settings instead. For a touch-first game, open Game Controls from the left side of the window or press Shift + Tab in fullscreen and select Remap controls.

Does a Playable label guarantee that both my mouse and keyboard will work?

No. Google’s criteria include mouse and/or keyboard support, so the label does not promise both devices or every action. It also does not guarantee the same behavior for every PC configuration or game version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use the Controls Editor to add mouse controls to any game?

No. The editor maps supported inputs to on-screen touch controls, and available options depend on the game. Google’s June 2026 release notes describe a mouse-scroll-wheel Zoom control that simulates pinch-to-zoom for supported games; they do not say that every title supports every mouse function.

Will remapping fix an Unsupported game?

Google identifies technical issues that may prevent an Unsupported game from operating correctly, and its guidance does not promise a remapping workaround. You can check the game’s own support channel or choose a title labeled Optimized or Playable instead.

What PC requirements should I check?

Google lists Windows 10 version 2004, an SSD with 10 GB free, 8 GB RAM, four physical CPU cores, and hardware virtualization enabled. Windows Hypervisor Platform may need to be enabled during setup, and Google says BIOS CPU virtualization is needed for many catalog games. These requirements do not guarantee that a specific game supports a particular input.

The Bottom Line

Check the game’s Google Play Games on PC label first. Use Game Controls for optimized PC titles, or map keyboard input to suitable on-screen touch controls in the Controls Editor for touch-first games. If the game is Unsupported, unavailable, or lacks touch targets to map, changing peripherals or repeating remapping steps will not supply missing support.
