Start by identifying what actually failed. Android Auto that never launches, a connection that repeatedly drops, and a system where only calls or music fail have different remedies. Check compatibility and the connection type first, then follow the wired, wireless, or feature-specific path below. Android Auto is integrated into compatible Android phones, so most users do not need to install a separate Android Auto app.

Identify the symptom before changing settings

Write down the phone model, Android version, car or aftermarket receiver model, whether you use USB or wireless projection, and when the problem began. An update, a new vehicle, or a previously reliable connection that suddenly stopped working can point to different causes.

What you see Most relevant path First check
Android Auto does not appear at all Compatibility, car settings, USB port, or wireless pairing Confirm the phone, vehicle and connection method are supported
It starts but disconnects repeatedly USB cable and port (wired) or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi pairing (wireless) Use a known-good short cable or recreate the wireless pairing
The display works but calls fail Bluetooth phone-audio permissions and vehicle support Enable Phone audio for the car and check the vehicle manual
The display works but music fails Bluetooth media permission, app playback, or volume Enable Media audio and check both phone and vehicle volume
Only voice commands, volume, or app discovery fails A feature-specific Android Auto help path Troubleshoot that feature rather than replacing a cable blindly

Android Auto’s official help topics separate overall connection failures from voice, volume, and app-discovery problems. Treating every symptom as a cable problem can waste time, particularly when the connection itself is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm phone, vehicle and connection requirements

Android Auto works only when both ends support it. A USB socket that charges a phone does not necessarily carry Android Auto data, and a vehicle with Bluetooth does not automatically support wireless Android Auto.

Connection Google’s stated requirements Setup conditions
Wired Compatible vehicle or receiver; Android 9.0 (Pie) or later; active mobile data plan; high-quality USB cable Use the designated Android Auto USB port, keep the car in Park, and turn on the infotainment system
Wireless Compatible phone and vehicle; active data plan; 5 GHz Wi-Fi support; Google states wireless projection is compatible with Android 11.0 phones Bluetooth pairing is required the first time; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services on while setup completes
  • Android Auto is not available on Android (Go edition) devices.
  • Exact compatibility depends on the phone model, vehicle, receiver, software version and market. Check the phone maker and vehicle maker for model-specific support.
  • Complete initial setup while the vehicle is safely parked with the infotainment system switched on.
  • If you changed cars, do not assume the second vehicle supports the same Android Auto mode as the first.

If a requirement is missing, troubleshooting cannot create support that the hardware or edition does not provide. Resolve compatibility first or use the connection method the manufacturer lists for that vehicle.

Fix a wired Android Auto connection

When a wired connection worked previously and then stopped, test the physical data path before resetting the phone. Google says replacing the USB cable will likely fix some formerly working wired failures. That advice applies to wired connections, not to wireless pairing or an individual call or music feature.

  1. Use a known-good data cable. Choose a high-quality USB cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet). The cable supplied with the phone is a sensible first test. An independent cable can also work when it supports USB data and is suitable for both connectors.
  2. Remove signal-path additions. Connect the phone directly to the vehicle. Do not use a USB hub, extension lead, or adapter chain while diagnosing the fault.
  3. Try the vehicle’s designated port. Many cars have several USB sockets but only one supports Android Auto. Check the vehicle manual or the labels beside the ports.
  4. Inspect both connections. Look for lint, looseness, bent contacts, or a plug that moves in the socket. A phone that charges but is not detected may still have a data-contact problem.
  5. Unlock and approve prompts. With the car in Park, connect the phone and accept any Android Auto, data-access, or safety prompts shown on the phone or infotainment screen.
  6. Check the car’s Android Auto setting. Open the infotainment system’s connectivity, smartphone integration, or Android Auto settings and make sure the feature is enabled. Menu names vary by vehicle.
  7. Restart the infotainment system. Use the vehicle’s normal restart procedure, then reconnect directly with the short cable. A head unit can remain in a failed state even after the phone has been restarted.
  8. Check receiver firmware. For an aftermarket head unit, visit that receiver maker’s support page and compare the installed firmware with the current release. Follow its update instructions exactly; firmware procedures differ by model.
  9. Test methodically. If possible, try the same phone and cable in another known-compatible vehicle, or try another compatible phone in the vehicle. Change one item at a time so the failed component is identifiable.

Do not infer that a particular cable brand is required. The useful criteria are data capability, connector fit, short length, sound construction, and successful testing with the specific phone and vehicle.

Google Android Auto Help troubleshooting guidance

This instruction is narrowly aimed at a previously working wired path. It is not a promise that a new cable will restore wireless projection or repair calls, music, voice commands, or navigation when those features alone are failing.

Repair wireless Android Auto pairing

Wireless Android Auto uses more than Bluetooth audio. The phone and vehicle must support wireless projection, and the initial setup uses Bluetooth while Wi-Fi carries the projection connection. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled until pairing is complete.

  1. Verify wireless support. Check the phone and exact vehicle or receiver model, not just the presence of a Bluetooth menu. Confirm that the phone meets the applicable Android version and 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirements.
  2. Park and wake the system. Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system. Wireless discovery can fail when the head unit is asleep or the vehicle is moving.
  3. Enable the three setup radios. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone. Google recommends leaving all three on during setup.
  4. Start pairing from the car. Use the vehicle’s phone or smartphone-integration menu and select the phone when it appears. Accept matching codes and Android Auto permissions on both screens.
  5. Toggle Bluetooth if discovery stalls. Turn Bluetooth off, wait briefly, turn it back on, and restart the phone and infotainment system if necessary.
  6. Remove stale pairings. On the phone, forget the old car entry in Bluetooth settings. In the vehicle, delete stored phones according to the car manual. Old records can prevent a clean negotiation.
  7. Pair again from scratch. With the old entries removed, repeat the manufacturer’s pairing sequence. Android menu labels differ by version, so follow the labels shown on your phone rather than a fixed path from another Android release.
  8. Check for competing connections. Temporarily disconnect other phones that the vehicle may select automatically. Pair the intended phone first, then restore other devices after Android Auto works.

A wireless adapter is not an official repair requirement in Google’s guidance. Do not add one while the phone, vehicle compatibility, Bluetooth pairing, and Wi-Fi setup remain unverified.

“For best results, keep your phone’s Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while you complete the setup.”

Google Android Auto Help setup instructions

When only calls or music stop working

If the Android Auto interface launches and navigation or other apps work, isolate the failed feature instead of resetting the entire connection.

Calls do not work

  1. Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings for the paired vehicle.
  2. Make sure Phone audio is enabled for that car.
  3. Check the phone’s call volume and the vehicle’s call volume separately; many cars store a call volume independent from media volume.
  4. Confirm that the vehicle supports Bluetooth calling and follow its manual for selecting the hands-free profile.
  5. If another phone is connected for calls, disconnect it temporarily and test again.

Not every vehicle supports Bluetooth calls, and a working Android Auto screen does not establish that the car’s hands-free profile is available or correctly selected.

Music does not play

  1. In the car’s Bluetooth entry on the phone, enable Media audio.
  2. Start playback in a supported media app and check that the app is not paused, offline, or muted.
  3. Raise both the phone’s media volume and the vehicle’s media volume.
  4. Select the vehicle as the active audio output if the phone has switched to headphones or another speaker.
  5. Check the vehicle manual for Bluetooth music limitations; some systems support calls but not media playback.

These Bluetooth checks do not diagnose every voice-assistant, navigation, or app-discovery issue. Use the relevant Android Auto help path when the failure is limited to voice commands, volume behavior, or available apps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reset the car association when a second vehicle will not connect

Android Auto can retain associations from earlier vehicles. If the first car works but a second car does not, forget previously connected cars and try the setup again.

  1. Open Android Auto settings on the phone. Depending on Android version, Android Auto may be reached through Settings search, connected-device settings, or the Android Auto settings page.
  2. Choose the option to forget previously connected cars and confirm the removal.
  3. In the vehicle, delete the phone from the stored-device list using the car manual’s procedure.
  4. Restart the phone and infotainment system.
  5. Reconnect using the correct wired USB port or repeat wireless Bluetooth pairing.

There is no single menu path that is identical across Android versions and vehicles. If the option is not named exactly as above, look for “previously connected cars,” “paired devices,” or smartphone-integration settings.

Check the infotainment system and manufacturer support

The car can be the failing component even when the phone is healthy. Confirm that Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle settings and restart the infotainment system. A vehicle maker can verify whether the exact trim, software version, and USB port support Android Auto. For an aftermarket receiver, its manufacturer is the authority for firmware availability, update media, and recovery instructions.

  • Record the vehicle year, trim, infotainment model, and firmware version.
  • Note which USB port or wireless profile you used.
  • Check whether another compatible phone produces the same result.
  • Do not interrupt a receiver firmware update or substitute files from another model.

Contact the vehicle manufacturer when compatibility is uncertain or the head unit reports an error. A phone-side reset cannot correct an unsupported vehicle configuration or defective receiver hardware.

  • Phone make and exact model
  • Android version and Android Auto version
  • Google Play services version
  • Vehicle or aftermarket receiver make, model, year and firmware
  • Wired or wireless connection, including the USB port used
  • The exact symptom, such as “screen never launches,” “disconnects after two minutes,” or “music works but calls do not”
  • The date the issue began and whether it followed an update, new pairing, cable change, or vehicle-service visit
  • Steps that reliably reproduce the failure and any error text shown

Google’s bug-report procedure advises updating Android Auto and Google Play services, restarting the phone, recreating the issue, and capturing the report promptly. Keep the phone connected to the car while the report is being captured; disconnecting first can remove relevant diagnostic information. Follow Google’s current on-screen instructions for submitting the report and include the vehicle details above.

Choose a replacement cable intelligently

If the wired path is the one that failed, compare cables on the attributes that affect Android Auto data transmission rather than appearance or brand.

Criterion What to look for Why it matters
Connector compatibility The exact phone connector on one end and the vehicle’s Android Auto USB connector on the other A physically compatible plug is required before data can pass
Data capability A cable specified for USB data, not charging only Android Auto needs a data connection
Length Under 1 metre (3 feet), matching Google’s recommendation Shorter cables reduce bends, strain and unnecessary signal path
Build and certification evidence Sound connectors and credible USB-IF compliance information when available Construction quality affects reliability; no particular brand is required
Real-world fit Works with both the phone and the vehicle’s designated port without an adapter chain A cable can function with a phone yet fail in a specific car port

Test the cable directly in the car before buying additional accessories. If a known-good short cable produces the same failure, return to compatibility, infotainment settings, port condition, and the bug-report path rather than repeatedly replacing cables.

Prevent the next interruption

  • Keep one short, known-good USB data cable in the vehicle and avoid hubs or extensions.
  • Use the designated Android Auto USB port and keep it free of debris.
  • Leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services available during initial wireless setup.
  • Install phone, Android Auto, Google Play services, and receiver updates from their official sources.
  • When changing vehicles, remove old pairings if the new car is not discovered cleanly.
  • Record the exact symptom before resetting anything; the distinction between a dead connection and a single failed feature determines the correct fix.

Android Auto problems are usually narrowed fastest by matching the remedy to the failure: cable and port checks for wired projection, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi pairing for wireless projection, and Phone audio or Media audio settings when only calls or music are affected.
