If Android Auto is not showing incoming messages or will not read them aloud, troubleshoot in this order: restore the phone–car connection, enable notification access for the assistant you use, verify the messaging app’s incoming alerts, then use Android Auto’s notification controls to play the message. A dismissed alert may still be available in a message tile or the notification center.
The exact menu names vary by Android version, phone manufacturer, vehicle head unit, country and assistant rollout. Perform setup and settings changes while parked.
Find the failure point first
Android Auto messaging failures usually fall into one of three layers. Identifying the layer prevents you from changing unrelated settings and makes support reports much more useful.

Google describes the expected behavior this way: “Message notifications will appear on your screen.” You can then listen by voice, tap the notification, or use Play aloud.

Requirements checklist before troubleshooting
Have the phone paired with the vehicle, Android Auto connected on the head unit, and the messaging app installed and signed in. For wireless setup, Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and Location Services must remain enabled while pairing. The assistant currently presented on the phone or car must have notification access. Finally, the app and Android notification controls must allow incoming messages.
Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones, so Google says you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. If the interface itself cannot connect, that is a compatibility or connection problem rather than a missing-message setting.
1. Make sure Android Auto and the phone are actually connected
A missing notification cannot be fixed inside the messaging app if Android Auto itself is not connected correctly. Check the connection before changing notification permissions.

Wireless Android Auto setup
- Put the vehicle in Park before beginning first-time setup.
- On the phone and car, start Bluetooth pairing and select the correct vehicle.
- Leave Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and Location Services enabled during setup. Wireless Android Auto uses the phone–car Bluetooth relationship to begin the connection and the wireless link to keep it active.
- Accept the Android Auto and assistant permissions shown on the phone or car display.
- Wait for Android Auto to appear on the head unit, then send a test message to the phone.
If the car still cannot connect, confirm that both the phone and vehicle are compatible with Android Auto and follow the connection guidance for the vehicle. Google notes that Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones; you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. For an unresolved connection problem, the vehicle manufacturer is the appropriate next support channel because head-unit pairing and firmware behavior differ.
Wired connection checks
If your vehicle uses a cable, first establish that Android Auto launches reliably at all. Use the vehicle’s supported USB data port and a cable capable of data transfer. If Android Auto does not start at all, treat that as a connection or compatibility problem, not a messaging-notification problem. Once the Android Auto interface is stable, continue with the notification steps below. A cable or wireless adapter is not a supported remedy for a notification permission failure; consider such hardware only when the separate wired or wireless connection is the problem.
Use the phone’s notification shade as a control test
Send a test message while the phone is connected. If the message does not create a notification in the phone’s own notification shade, Android Auto has nothing to forward. Fix the messaging app or Android notification setting first. If the phone shows the alert but the car does not, continue to notification access and Android Auto playback checks.

2. Give the active assistant notification access
Android Auto relies on the assistant currently available on your device. Depending on the phone, car, language and rollout, that assistant may be Gemini or Google Assistant. The permission requirement is the same: the assistant must be allowed to access notifications.
Cars with Google built-in
- On the car display, open Settings.
- Choose Apps and notifications.
- Open Special app access.
- Select Notification access.
- Turn on access for Gemini or Google Assistant, whichever the car and phone use.
Confirm the Bluetooth connection between the phone and car remains active after changing the permission, then send another test message. If both assistant entries are listed, enable the one that answers your Android Auto requests rather than assuming the older or newer name is correct.
If your menus use different labels
Manufacturers and Android versions rename or relocate this control. Use the Settings search field for Notification access, then open the result and enable the assistant presented on your device. Do not enable an unrelated service simply because its name contains “assistant”; choose the Gemini or Google Assistant entry that handles your Android Auto requests.
Check which assistant is in use
Google is moving most mobile devices from Google Assistant to Gemini. Gemini is intended to support the same Android Auto message commands with more natural speech, but the transition is not simultaneous for every device, locale or market. Use the name and controls actually shown on your phone and car instead of assuming that every installation has already changed.
3. Verify incoming-message notifications in the messaging app
Android Auto can only display a message alert that the messaging app and Android have permitted. Check both levels, especially when Android Auto shows notifications from other apps normally.
Inside the messaging app
- Open the messaging app on the phone.
- Open its Settings or Notifications section.
- Find the control for incoming messages, conversations or new-message alerts.
- Turn on notifications and any banner or pop-up option the app provides.
- Send a new test message after saving the change.
One Google-hosted community report found that enabling Google Messages’ Pop on screen option for Incoming Messages restored a banner for that user. This is a device-specific troubleshooting clue, not a guaranteed or Google-verified fix for every phone.
In Android’s app notification controls
Open Android Settings, find the messaging app under its notification or app-notification controls, and make sure incoming-message categories are allowed. Android versions may show separate switches for conversations, alerts, silent notifications, lock-screen display and pop-up behavior. Enable the category that represents new incoming messages; changing an unrelated promotional or background category will not restore a text alert.

Check special conversations and muted threads
If only one contact’s messages are missing, open that conversation in the messaging app and verify it is not muted, archived with notifications disabled, or configured as silent. If every conversation is missing, keep the app-level and Android-level notification checks as the priority.
4. Recover a message that was dismissed or missed
A message does not necessarily disappear from Android Auto when its banner is dismissed. Depending on the vehicle interface, open the message tile or the notification center on the car display and select the missed item.

- Locate the message notification that was dismissed or not opened.
- Select the message.
- Choose Play aloud.
You can also ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read received messages, or tap a visible message notification. The available commands and supported messaging apps can differ, so a control that works for SMS may not be offered for every third-party service.
When Play aloud is present but silent
First verify that the car’s media volume is audible and that the phone is still connected over Bluetooth. Then try the voice request and the on-screen Play aloud control separately. If one method works, the message data and assistant permission are functioning; the remaining issue is likely the other control path or the vehicle’s audio routing.
When no message appears in the tile or notification center
Return to the phone’s notification shade. If the phone has no alert, revisit the messaging app and Android notification settings. If the phone has an alert but Android Auto has neither a banner nor a tile, revisit notification access for Gemini or Google Assistant and reconnect the phone–car session.
5. Keep Message Summary separate from ordinary read-aloud
Message Summary is an optional Android Auto feature, not a prerequisite for basic message notifications or Play aloud. To inspect it, open Android Auto Settings on the car display and choose Notifications.

6. Use the symptom and scope to choose the next test
Android Auto will not connect at all
- Confirm the phone and car are paired over Bluetooth.
- For wireless setup, leave Bluetooth, Wi‑Fi and Location Services enabled.
- Repeat first-time setup while the vehicle is in Park.
- Check Android Auto and vehicle compatibility.
- If the interface still will not connect, follow the vehicle maker’s connection support process.
No apps produce message notifications
- Check notification access for the active Gemini or Google Assistant entry.
- Confirm a test message appears in the phone’s notification shade.
- Review Android’s app-notification controls and the messaging app’s incoming-message category.
- Reconnect Android Auto after changing permissions.
Only one app fails
Leave the connection and assistant settings unchanged if other apps are working. Focus on the failing app’s incoming-notification category, banner or pop-up setting, muted conversations and Android Auto support for that app. The fact that another messaging app works does not prove that every app exposes the same controls or is supported identically.
The banner appears but there is no spoken message
- Tap the notification and use Play aloud.
- Open the message tile or notification center if the banner was dismissed.
- Ask Gemini or Google Assistant to read the message.
- Check car media volume and Bluetooth audio routing.
Voice commands fail but tapping works
The message notification path is functioning, so concentrate on the assistant selected on the phone and car, its notification access, microphone permissions and the wording of the request. Continue using the on-screen notification and Play aloud controls until the assistant responds correctly.

Alerts appear on the phone but not in the car
This narrows the fault to Android Auto’s handoff rather than message delivery. Reconfirm that the assistant has notification access, ensure the phone–car Bluetooth session has not dropped, and reconnect Android Auto. Then test both a visible banner and a message tile. Record whether the notification center contains the item even when no pop-up appears; that distinction helps identify a display-only issue.

Voice request, tapping a notification and selecting Play aloud are separate control paths. If tapping works but voice does not, the message and notification permission are probably functioning and the assistant path needs attention. If voice works but the tile is empty, check the head unit’s notification display and reconnect the session. Do not treat a missing optional summary as evidence that basic playback is unavailable.
7. Record the details needed for escalation
If the checks above do not restore alerts, collect the details that distinguish a connection defect from an app or regional-availability issue:
- Phone make and model
- Android version
- Vehicle and head-unit make and model
- Android Auto version
- Messaging app and its version, if shown
- Whether Gemini or Google Assistant is active
- Country and language or locale
- Whether the message appears in the phone’s notification shade
- Whether Android Auto connects reliably before notifications are tested
- Whether all messaging apps fail or only one
Provide these details to the vehicle manufacturer for a connection or head-unit problem, or to the app’s support channel when one app is affected. Mention the exact step that fails—for example, “the phone shows the message but Android Auto has no tile” or “Play aloud appears but produces no audio”—rather than reporting only that messaging is broken.

Usually not. The supported remedies for missing or silent message notifications are Bluetooth pairing, notification permissions, app settings and Android Auto playback controls. No physical product is established as a fix for this symptom. A cable or wireless adapter may be relevant only when Android Auto itself has a separate wired or wireless connection failure; buying one will not grant notification access or make an unsupported messaging app appear.

Do the pairing, permission and notification changes while parked. Once configured, voice commands and the car’s built-in controls are preferable to handling the phone while driving. Do not enable a setting that displays message content if that conflicts with your privacy needs or local driving rules. Message Summary is optional, and Google cautions that its summaries can contain mistakes; ordinary read-aloud does not require it.

Can I recover a dismissed Android Auto message notification?
