If Android Auto music sounds too quiet, distorted, thin, or keeps cutting out, isolate the symptom before changing settings. Try another compatible media app, adjust the car’s media volume while audio is playing, then check the connection and infotainment system. Make one change at a time, and make adjustments while parked.
First, identify the audio problem
“Bad sound” can mean several different things. Decide which symptom you are trying to fix; low loudness, distortion, weak bass, dropouts, and stuttering do not necessarily have the same cause.
- Too quiet: The music is consistently softer than expected.
- Distorted: Sound crackles, breaks up, or seems to clip, especially at higher volume.
- Thin or weak: The sound lacks bass or fullness.
- Inconsistent: Loudness or tone changes between tracks, apps, or sources.
- Dropouts or stuttering: Audio pauses or skips rather than playing continuously.
Do not infer a codec or encoding fault from subjective sound alone. Note when the problem happens so you can compare sources and connections systematically.

Play another track, then try a different media app that works with Android Auto. Keep the phone, car, and sound settings unchanged during the comparison. If practical, use the same track or similar content in both apps.

Android Auto requires compatible media apps. Some apps also require you to be signed in or to have a subscription or premium account. Check the app’s playback settings and account status. If the problem occurs only in one app, Google directs users to that app’s developer for app-specific troubleshooting; see Google’s guidance on listening to media with Android Auto.
Adjust the car’s media volume while audio is playing
Start music or a podcast, then use the vehicle’s volume control for media. Some cars control navigation prompts, media, and voice separately, so changing the navigation or voice level may not change music loudness. Google notes, “In some vehicles, the volumes for navigation, media and voice may be controlled separately.” Consult the car’s owner’s manual for its specific controls. See Google’s volume guidance for Android Auto.

Check the connection and infotainment system
For a wired connection
If Android Auto is wired and audio skips or the connection is unreliable, try a known-good, high-quality USB cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), without a hub or extension. A cable supplied by the phone maker or one that meets USB-IF standards may be suitable; make sure it fits the phone and vehicle ports.

A cable change is therefore most relevant when troubleshooting a wired connection problem, not when the sound is merely thin or quiet. See Google’s Android Auto connection troubleshooting guidance.

For the car’s infotainment system or receiver
Check that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, then restart the system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s website for available firmware updates. Google includes these steps in its Android Auto troubleshooting guidance.
For first-time wireless setup
Follow the car’s pairing instructions and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup. The phone and vehicle must support wireless Android Auto. This setup guidance does not establish that wireless and wired connections have different sound quality. See Google’s Android Auto setup instructions.

Compare sources without changing several settings at once
If your car can play audio from more than one source, compare Android Auto with another source while keeping the vehicle’s sound controls in mind. If the same symptom occurs across sources, that comparison is useful context, but it does not by itself identify the cause. If it appears only with one app or connection, record that distinction.
Change one factor at a time. Avoid simultaneously changing equalizer, normalization, codec, or gain settings: multiple changes make it harder to tell what affected the sound, and no single such setting is established as a universal Android Auto audio fix.

Report a repeatable problem to Google
If the issue persists after these checks, record the details that help describe when it occurs:
- Phone model and Android version
- Vehicle and receiver, including whether the receiver is aftermarket
- Wired or wireless connection
- Media app and the specific symptom
- Whether another app or another car-audio source changes the symptom
These comparisons help characterize the issue; they do not prove its cause. Google provides a process to submit an Android Auto bug report. Capture the report soon after reproducing the problem, and keep the phone connected until report capture and sending are complete.
