If Android Auto sound is coming from your phone, a different Bluetooth output, or an unexpected vehicle source, start by identifying which audio category is affected. Music and podcasts, turn-by-turn directions, phone calls, and voice-assistant replies can follow different volume controls in the same car. Select a compatible media app on the car display, verify the vehicle’s audio source and separate volume settings, and only then investigate the USB or wireless connection. The correct menu names depend on your vehicle, infotainment system, connection type, and whether the receiver is factory-installed or aftermarket.
What “wrong speakers” means in Android Auto
Android Auto is designed to play compatible media, such as music and podcasts, through the car’s speakers. When that does not happen, the symptom is not always a single Android Auto failure. You may be hearing one category through the phone while another category still uses the car correctly.
- Media: music, podcasts, audiobooks, or other supported playback.
- Navigation: spoken turn directions and alerts.
- Calls: the other person’s voice and your microphone path.
- Voice assistant: responses to voice commands.
Test each category separately. Play a short track, start a navigation route and wait for a direction, place or receive a call safely while parked, and ask the voice assistant a simple question. Record which categories use the wrong output. A car can have separate controls for navigation, media, and voice, so a navigation prompt playing quietly from the phone does not prove that music routing is also wrong.

1. Confirm that Android Auto is handling the media
Use a supported app and the same account on your phone
For music or podcasts, make sure the app supports Android Auto and that you are signed in on the phone. Android Auto’s official media guidance says supported media can play through the car speakers when selected from the car display. An app that is open only on the handset, unavailable to Android Auto, or signed out may not be the source you expect.

Select the app on the car display
- Connect Android Auto and wait for its interface to appear on the vehicle display.
- Open the car display’s Android Auto app launcher or recent-apps area.
- Select the compatible music or podcast app you intend to use.
- Start playback, then listen for the car speakers before changing other settings.
Use the car display for this test rather than starting playback exclusively from the phone. If the selected app plays correctly through the car, the original problem was likely app selection or the vehicle’s source choice rather than a failed Android Auto connection.
2. Check the vehicle’s selected audio source
The infotainment system can remain on another source even while Android Auto is connected. Depending on the vehicle, that source might be ordinary radio, a built-in media player, a Bluetooth audio screen, or an Android Auto media channel. The exact labels and screen layout vary by make, model, year, and receiver.
- With Android Auto connected, open the vehicle’s audio or source screen.
- Identify which source is active.
- Choose the Android Auto media source if the vehicle presents one, then resume playback from the car display.
- Stop any competing playback on the phone or another paired device so you can identify the active stream.
If you cannot find an Android Auto source, use the vehicle owner’s manual or the manufacturer’s instructions. Google’s setup guidance also directs drivers to vehicle-specific documentation for controls that differ between systems. Avoid applying a menu path from another car: similarly named controls can behave differently.
3. Adjust the correct volume while that sound is active
Google Android Auto Help notes that, in some vehicles, navigation, media, and voice volumes are controlled separately. The timing of the adjustment matters: many vehicles assign the volume change to whichever category is currently speaking or playing.

Media volume
Start a track in the selected Android Auto app. While it is playing, use the vehicle’s hardware knob, steering-wheel control, or on-screen control. Watch for a label indicating media rather than radio or another source. If the phone’s volume changes but the car does not, perform the same test with the vehicle control.
Navigation and voice volume
Start a route and wait for a spoken instruction. Adjust volume while the instruction is audible; then repeat with a voice-assistant response. Record whether the vehicle shows separate “navigation,” “guidance,” “voice,” or similar indicators. Because labels differ, consult the owner’s manual for the exact control and mute behavior.
Calls
Test a call while safely parked. Call audio may have its own vehicle control and may temporarily take priority over media. End the call before testing music again, and note whether the car returns to the Android Auto source automatically.

Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth for the initial pairing. Google’s setup instructions say to keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on during setup. If any of these were disabled, the wireless connection may not establish or may behave inconsistently.

- Park the vehicle and turn on the infotainment system.
- On the phone, enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services.
- Use the vehicle’s pairing screen to begin the Bluetooth connection.
- Accept the pairing and Android Auto prompts on both the phone and the vehicle display.
- Wait for Android Auto to load, then test media, navigation, calls, and assistant audio independently.
If Android Auto was previously paired but now connects to the wrong device, inspect the vehicle’s saved-phone list and select the intended phone. Remove only an obsolete or duplicate pairing when the vehicle manual explains how; do not erase settings blindly if you rely on other Bluetooth functions.
5. Recheck a wired connection only when the connection itself is failing
A USB cable is relevant when Android Auto will not connect, disconnects, or repeatedly stops responding. Google’s general troubleshooting guidance suggests using a high-quality USB cable shorter than one metre for connection reliability. That recommendation addresses an unstable connection; it does not establish that purchasing a cable will correct a stable Android Auto session whose audio is routed to the wrong source.
- Disconnect the phone and inspect the phone and vehicle USB ports for obvious debris or damage.
- Reconnect with a high-quality cable shorter than one metre.
- Use the vehicle USB port designated for smartphone integration, if the manual identifies one.
- Wait for Android Auto to appear before starting playback.
- Test the same audio category that originally failed.
If the display connects normally and only the speaker destination is wrong, return to the source and category-volume checks instead of repeatedly replacing cables.

6. Restart the infotainment system when Android Auto is not behaving normally
Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance includes restarting the vehicle’s infotainment system. Use the restart method specified by the vehicle manufacturer; some systems provide a visible restart command, while others use a documented hardware-button hold. Perform this while parked, and wait for the system to finish booting before reconnecting the phone.

After the restart, reconnect Android Auto and run the four-category test again. A restart is most appropriate when Android Auto fails to launch, the display freezes, the connection repeatedly drops, or the vehicle stops responding to source changes. It is not a guaranteed remedy for a deliberately selected but incorrect vehicle source.
7. Check compatibility and receiver firmware
Confirm the phone-and-car combination
When Android Auto cannot connect or works only intermittently, use Google’s compatibility and connection troubleshooting guidance. The relevant details include the phone’s Android version, whether the vehicle supports wired or wireless Android Auto, and the receiver model. Because those details are not provided here, no single compatibility conclusion can be made for your car.
Aftermarket receivers
If the car uses an aftermarket receiver, Google recommends checking the receiver manufacturer’s site for firmware updates. Read the update notes and installation instructions for the exact model. Do not apply firmware intended for a different receiver, and do not interrupt power during an update. If the receiver is factory-installed, use the vehicle manufacturer’s support channel instead.
8. Treat software updates as version-specific troubleshooting
An Android Auto Help Community response dated March 15, 2021, described a particular Android 11-era case in which sound played from the phone instead of the car speakers. The response said an update had been rolled out and advised updating Android Auto. That is historical, version-specific guidance, not a current universal fix for every wrong-speaker symptom.

If your phone offers an Android Auto or Android system update, install it through the normal system or app-update path, then retest the affected category. Keep the date and Android version in your notes. If the problem began after an update, tell Google or the vehicle/receiver manufacturer which version changed and whether the symptom affects media, navigation, calls, or voice. Do not downgrade software or install unofficial packages solely because of this historical example.
Decision branches for persistent problems
Only media is wrong
- Confirm the app is compatible and signed in on the phone.
- Launch that app from the Android Auto car display.
- Set the vehicle to the Android Auto media source.
- Adjust media volume while playback is active.
Only navigation or assistant speech is wrong
- Trigger the affected speech so its volume control becomes active.
- Adjust navigation or voice volume separately from media.
- Use the owner’s manual for mute, guidance, and voice-source behavior.
Only calls are wrong
- Test while parked and note whether call audio takes over the vehicle.
- Check call-specific controls in the vehicle manual.
- Retest media after ending the call.
All categories are wrong, or Android Auto will not stay connected
- Check wireless requirements or the designated USB port and cable.
- Restart the infotainment system.
- Check phone-and-vehicle compatibility.
- For an aftermarket receiver, check model-specific firmware.
Information to collect before contacting support
Vehicle-specific support is more effective when the symptom is reproducible. Write down:
- Vehicle year, make, model, and infotainment or receiver model.
- Phone model and Android version.
- Wired or wireless connection.
- The exact category affected: media, navigation, calls, voice, or more than one.
- The app used, whether you were signed in, and whether it was launched from the car display.
- The vehicle source shown when the sound was misrouted.
- Whether a restart, a different supported app, or a different connection changed the symptom.
- Any recent Android Auto, Android, vehicle, or receiver update, including its date.
Give this information first to the vehicle manufacturer for factory systems or to the receiver manufacturer for aftermarket systems. Use Google’s Android Auto support guidance for Android Auto compatibility and connection behavior. The available official guidance does not establish a model-independent setting that fixes every wrong-speaker case.
What not to do
- Do not assume one volume slider controls media, navigation, voice, and calls in every vehicle.
- Do not buy a cable or Bluetooth accessory as a generic cure when Android Auto connects reliably and only the source is wrong.
- Do not follow another vehicle’s menu path without checking your owner’s manual.
- Do not treat the 2021 Android 11-era update response as proof that every current issue needs the same update.
- Do not change settings or troubleshoot while driving; park before pairing, restarting, or testing calls.
When the issue is resolved
Consider the problem fixed only after each affected category has been tested under normal conditions. Play media from the intended Android Auto app, trigger a navigation instruction, test a voice response, and place a brief call while parked. Confirm that the vehicle returns to the expected media source after navigation or a call ends. If one category still uses the wrong output, report that category specifically rather than describing the symptom simply as “Android Auto audio.”
