Black bars around an Android app usually mean the system is preserving the app’s original proportions on a wider display, not that your screen is damaged. On devices that support it, open Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio, choose the affected app, leave it on App default first, and test Full screen only if you prefer a larger image. Reopen the app after changing the option. If no aspect-ratio control exists, or the app is still distorted, the lasting fix normally has to come from the app developer.
First, identify what is actually leaving the bars
Bars around the entire app window
If the app is centered with unused space at the left and right, or at the top and bottom, Android is probably letterboxing it. Letterboxing places the app in a window that matches the proportions it expects and fills the remaining display area with bars or a matte. Android documents this as common on large-screen devices whose dimensions and aspect ratio differ from the standard phones many apps were designed for. Fixed orientation, a fixed aspect ratio, or an app that says it cannot be resized can all trigger the behavior. See Android’s device compatibility mode documentation.
Letterboxing is generally a compatibility decision, not evidence of a cracked panel, a bad cable, or a screen protector problem. Replacing hardware will not make a non-adaptive app understand a different aspect ratio.

A video can contain its own letterbox bars because the recording has a different shape from the display. In that case the app may be working correctly. A zoom or “fill” command can remove the bars, but it crops part of the picture; it does not repair the source video. Check the player’s zoom controls separately from Android’s app aspect-ratio setting.

Everything is visibly wide or tall
Text, icons, faces, or circular controls that look unnaturally wide or narrow indicate stretching or an unsuitable full-screen override rather than simple letterboxing. Capture a screenshot if possible. Compare a circle, a person’s face, and a known square icon: those are quick ways to distinguish a proportion error from a normal wide layout.
Bars change when you rotate or fold the device
That change is useful evidence. Android can make a new compatibility decision when the display switches between portrait and landscape, or when a foldable moves between its outer and inner screens. Bars at the sides in one orientation can become bars at the top and bottom in another without anything being wrong with the panel. Record the orientation or foldable posture in which the problem appears before reporting it.
Use the per-app aspect-ratio control when your device provides one
Android’s generic location on supported large-screen devices is Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio. Android 14 and later can expose this menu on large-screen devices that implement the feature, but manufacturers decide whether it appears and which choices are available. Your labels may therefore differ from the generic path.

- Tap Apps. Use Settings search for “aspect ratio” if the Apps page has no obvious entry.
- Tap Aspect ratio, then select the app with the black bars or distorted layout.
- Record the current choice before changing it. The usual starting value is App default.
- Close and reopen the app. Some compatibility changes do not appear until the app window is recreated.
- If the app is still too small and you want to use more of the display, return to the same screen and test Full screen or a fixed ratio offered by your device.
- Inspect the result, and return to App default if text, images, camera previews, or controls look wrong.
Some Android compatibility flows show a restart or relaunch control after a display configuration change. Use it when offered rather than assuming the old window has already redrawn. If the app is open on more than one screen or in split screen, close those windows too so you are testing a newly created app window.
Make one change at a time and note what happened. Testing App default, Full screen, and a fixed ratio in a random order makes it harder to tell which option caused cropping or stretching. A short note with the option name, orientation, and result is also useful if you later contact the developer.
Choose the mode that gives the most usable result
Filling every pixel is not the same as displaying the app correctly. Evaluate the affected app after each change using the criteria below.
| Mode | What it does | Advantages | Risks and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| App default | Lets the app and Android use the compatibility behavior selected for that app. | Usually preserves the developer’s intended proportions and avoids unexpected cropping. | May retain visible bars or a smaller centered window. |
| Full screen | Asks the system to occupy the available display area with the app. | Uses more pixels and can make a properly adaptive app easier to read. | Can reveal stretched controls, clipped text, inaccessible edge buttons, or a distorted camera preview. A full-screen override cannot create an adaptive layout that the app does not have. |
| Fixed ratio (for example, 4:3 or 16:9) | Constrains the app to a ratio selected by the device maker. | Can be a useful compromise when the app behaves correctly at one known ratio. | Leaves bars if the chosen ratio does not match the display, and may still crop or misplace content. Availability is device-dependent. |
| Split screen or another vendor option | Uses a manufacturer-defined compatibility layout or window arrangement. | May help a particular app on a particular model. | Names and behavior are not standardized; verify what the option does on your device before relying on it. |
Check five things after a change: are circles and faces proportional, is any important content cut off, is text readable, can you reach controls at the edges, and does the camera preview match the captured photo? Keep the mode that passes those checks, even if it leaves a narrow bar.

Also test a real task rather than only the app’s home screen. Open a long form, a settings page, a map, a game board, or the camera screen where the problem is most obvious. Scroll to the bottom and sides, open a menu, and tap controls near each edge. A layout can look acceptable at launch while hiding a button or clipping a dialog later.
Why Android does this on wide phones, tablets and foldables
Apps often began with a portrait phone window in mind. A tablet, a foldable’s inner screen, a desktop-style window, or a phone with an unusually wide panel can have a different width, height, and smallest-width value. When an app declares a fixed orientation, fixed aspect ratio, or non-resizable behavior, Android may protect the layout by placing it in a compatible window.
“Letterboxing happens often on large screen devices because the dimensions and aspect ratio of the device display are usually different from those of standard phones, for which most apps are designed.”
Rotation and folding can change the display configuration. A foldable may letterbox in one posture but not another, and rotating a tablet can trigger a new compatibility decision. Test the app in the orientation and posture in which you actually use it before deciding that one setting has solved the problem.
Recommended Free Tools
The same app can therefore behave differently from one device to another without either device being defective. A phone may offer no override, while a tablet from another manufacturer exposes several ratios. Even two devices on the same Android release can differ because the manufacturer configures the compatibility menu and its available choices.
Android version and screen-size limits you need to know
Android 14 and newer
Android’s adaptive-app guidance describes a per-app aspect-ratio menu on supported large-screen devices. The generic path is Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio, but the menu is optional from the manufacturer’s point of view. One model may show only App default and Full screen; another may add 4:3, 16:9, Split screen, or other choices. An absent menu is not proof that your installation is faulty.
Do not assume that an option shown for one app will be shown for every app. The device can restrict choices based on the app’s declared behavior, screen configuration, or the manufacturer’s compatibility policy. If the affected app is missing from the list, continue with updates and developer reporting rather than repeatedly changing unrelated display settings.

Android 16 and apps targeting API level 36
Android 16 generally ignores an app’s orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions on displays whose smallest width is at least 600dp when the app targets API level 36. This threshold mainly covers tablets, the inner displays of large-screen foldables, and desktop windowing. It does not mean every app on every phone will suddenly fill the screen.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Documented exceptions include smaller displays and games. A user can also opt in to the app’s default behavior through the device’s aspect-ratio settings. Developers may temporarily opt out while updating an app; Android says that opt-out capability will be removed for apps targeting API level 37 or higher on those large displays. The policy affects how qualifying apps are launched, but it cannot repair a layout that is intrinsically drawn at the wrong proportions.
In practical terms, the 600dp figure is a technical screen-size threshold, not a promise that all applications will be attractive at every size. An app that technically opens full screen can still have controls positioned for a portrait phone, a camera surface with the wrong crop, or content that is difficult to reach. Judge the result in the app itself.
For the platform details and the current exception list, see the Android Open Source Project large-screen app compatibility setup guide.
What to do when Full screen makes the app worse
Text or buttons are cut off
Return to Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio > [the app] > App default, then relaunch the app. A full-screen override can extend the window beneath areas the original layout did not account for. If only one screen is affected, report that exact screen to the developer rather than repeatedly changing system settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPeople and circles look stretched
Use App default or a fixed ratio that preserves the correct proportions. Do not judge success by the absence of bars alone. A narrow matte is preferable to a distorted face, map, game board, or circular dial.
The camera preview is distorted
Compare the live preview with a captured image. If the preview is stretched, cropped, or shows controls outside the safe area, undo Full screen. Camera apps often combine a sensor ratio, a preview surface, and device controls; forcing a different window shape can affect those layers independently.

The app looks unchanged
Force-close it, reopen it, or use the restart control shown by the compatibility screen. If the setting still has no effect, the device may not implement that override for this app, or the app may render its own fixed-size surface inside the window.
A game is the exception
Games are among the documented exceptions to Android 16’s large-screen compatibility behavior. Do not infer from a game’s result that the same policy should apply to a productivity app, video player, or camera. Use the per-app choices offered by the device and report a game-specific rendering issue to its developer with the title and version.
If there is no aspect-ratio menu
- Use Settings search for aspect ratio, full screen apps, or display compatibility. Manufacturers place the control in different locations and may use different wording.
- Install the latest system update available for the device, then restart it.
- Update the affected app through the device’s app store. Read the version’s change notes for large-screen, tablet, foldable, or layout fixes.
- Test the app in portrait and landscape, and—on a foldable—in each usable posture. Note whether the bars move from the sides to the top and bottom.
- Do not change developer options or density values as a first-line fix. Those changes affect the whole interface and can create new sizing and touch-target problems without making the app adaptive.
Some manufacturers expose only a global display-size or zoom control. That changes the scale of the system UI; it does not change an app’s declared orientation or make a fixed layout responsive. Likewise, changing font size may make text easier to read but will not correct a stretched image or camera preview.
If an update has just been installed, restart the app after the update and repeat the same orientation test. Keep the old and new behavior separate in your notes; developers need to know whether the problem began with a particular app or system release.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When an app update is the only real fix
Android’s adaptive-app guidance warns: “Avoid stretched UI components: Layouts designed for standard, portrait phone screens can fail to accommodate other aspect ratios.” — Android Developers, App orientation, aspect ratio, and resizability.
If the app has no usable device override, or every available mode produces clipping or distortion, the developer needs to update its layout, orientation policy, or rendering surface. A user-side setting cannot add responsive constraints, move controls into a safe area, or supply missing tablet and foldable layouts.
Send the developer a concise report containing:
- Device model and whether the display is a phone, tablet, foldable outer screen, or foldable inner screen.
- Android version and, if shown by the developer, the app version.
- Screen orientation and foldable posture when the problem occurs.
- Whether the symptom is bars, stretching, cropping, misplaced controls, or a camera-preview error.
- The exact aspect-ratio option tested and whether relaunching changed anything.
- A screenshot or screen recording that does not expose private information.
This information distinguishes a normal compatibility window from an app rendering bug and gives the developer a reproducible configuration. Include the affected screen or workflow, not just the app’s name: “camera preview in landscape” or “checkout button at the right edge” is far more actionable than “looks bad.”

A practical decision path
- Bars surround the app: treat them as letterboxing first. Confirm that the bars are not part of a video or image.
- A supported menu is present: start with App default, relaunch, then test Full screen or a fixed ratio only if you want a larger view.
- Full screen distorts or crops: restore App default. The most pixel-filling option is not automatically the correct one.
- No menu is present: check system and app updates and test both orientations. Do not assume a universal Android path exists.
- The problem persists: report the device, Android release, app release, posture, setting, and screenshot to the developer. An app update may be required.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every black bar a fault: bars can preserve the source app or video’s proportions.
- Forcing Full screen permanently: an override can hide edge controls and distort camera or game surfaces.
- Assuming one manufacturer’s instructions apply everywhere: Android leaves the menu and options to device configuration.
- Confusing Android 16’s 600dp policy with a guarantee: it applies primarily to qualifying large displays and API-level-36-targeting apps, with stated exceptions and opt-out behavior.
- Buying hardware to solve software compatibility: a replacement display, cable, or screen protector does not make a fixed-layout app responsive unless there is separate evidence of physical damage.
- Changing several settings at once: without a before-and-after comparison, you cannot tell whether the app, system update, orientation, or aspect-ratio override caused the change.
- Ignoring privacy in screenshots: crop account names, messages, addresses, and camera content before sending a report.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are black bars on a wide Android screen a sign of a broken display?
Usually not. Bars around a centered app commonly mean Android is letterboxing a fixed-orientation, fixed-ratio, or non-resizable app to preserve its proportions. Bars inside a video may belong to the video itself.
How do I make an Android app fill the screen?
On a device that supports the feature, open Settings > Apps > Aspect ratio, select the app, and test Full screen. Reopen the app afterward. Restore App default if content is stretched, cropped, or difficult to use.
Why can’t I find Aspect ratio in Settings?
The per-app menu is not universal. Android 14 and later can expose it on supported large-screen devices, but manufacturers choose whether to include it and which options to show. Search Settings for aspect ratio or full screen apps, then check for system and app updates.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Should I choose App default or Full screen?
Start with App default because it generally preserves the app’s intended proportions. Choose Full screen only if you prefer a larger view and the app still passes checks for proportion, cropping, readability, edge controls, and camera-preview accuracy.
Why does Full screen make faces or circles look stretched?
The override can make a layout occupy a shape it was not designed to handle. It changes the window allocation but cannot create responsive constraints or a new adaptive layout. Use App default or a fixed ratio that keeps proportions correct.
Will Android 16 remove black bars from every app?
No. On displays with a smallest width of at least 600dp, Android 16 generally ignores orientation, aspect-ratio, and resizability restrictions for apps targeting API level 36, with exceptions including smaller displays and games. Apps can still have poor layouts, and users can opt into default behavior.
What information should I send an app developer?
Provide the device model, Android version, app version, display type, orientation or foldable posture, symptom, aspect-ratio mode tested, whether relaunching helped, and a privacy-safe screenshot or recording.
Can changing display size, density, or developer options fix this?
Those are not first-line fixes. They change the scale of the wider system interface and can create new touch-target or sizing problems; they do not make a fixed app layout responsive.
The Bottom Line
Black bars usually preserve an app’s proportions; they do not by themselves indicate damaged hardware. Identify whether the bars belong to the app or its media, try App default first, and test Full screen or a fixed ratio only through a device-supported per-app menu. Relaunch after changes and keep the mode that preserves readable, uncropped, correctly proportioned content. If no menu exists or every mode is flawed, update the app and report the exact device, Android version, orientation or posture, and affected screen—the durable fix may require an app update.
