If your Xbox controller won’t connect or keeps disconnecting, start by checking its power, then test it with a compatible USB data cable. If it works wired, troubleshoot wireless pairing and the device it is paired to. If it does not, check the cable, USB port and controller firmware before deciding whether the controller or host needs service.
1. Check power and restart the connection
Turn the controller off and back on. If it uses replaceable batteries or a removable rechargeable pack, fit known-good cells or charge the pack before testing again. Bring the controller close to the Xbox or PC while you troubleshoot.
If it still disconnects, continue with the USB test rather than assuming the wireless signal is the cause.

Connect the controller directly to the Xbox or PC using a compatible USB data cable. Check the controller’s port first: some models use USB-C, while others use micro-USB. The cable must fit the port and support data, not just charging. Xbox Support specifically advises checking that a different cable is firmly connected at both the console and the controller’s micro-USB or USB-C port (Xbox Support: connect a wireless controller).

If the controller works over USB but not wirelessly, focus next on pairing, wireless connection mode or the host device. A successful wired test narrows the problem but does not prove every part of the controller is fault-free. If it does not work by USB, try another compatible data cable and port before continuing.
3. Check for a controller firmware update
Xbox Support recommends checking controller firmware through Accessories and trying a different USB cable if an update does not complete. Do not disconnect the controller while an update is running; allow several minutes for it to finish.

Update from an Xbox console
- Open Settings on the console.
- Go to Devices & connections, then Accessories.
- Select the controller and check for an available firmware update.
- If the update fails, disconnect accessories and try again. Power-cycle the console, reconnect the controller with a different firmly seated USB data cable, and retry.
Update from a Windows PC
If console updating fails, connect the controller to a Windows PC by USB and use the Xbox Accessories app. Microsoft’s guidance specifies launching the app with the Xbox Wireless Controller plugged into the PC through USB (Xbox Support: update your controller; Microsoft Support: connect a controller to a Windows device).

4. Pair the controller with the intended device
Console Xbox Wireless pairing and PC Bluetooth pairing are separate processes. Pair to the device you intend to use; a controller paired with another host may need to be paired again. Follow the current on-screen or Xbox instructions for the console’s Pair controls.

Pair with a Windows PC over Bluetooth
- Check that your controller model supports Bluetooth. Bluetooth support varies among Xbox One controllers, so do not assume every Xbox One model supports it.
- Turn on Bluetooth in Windows settings.
- Press the controller’s Pair button to put it into pairing mode.
- In Windows Bluetooth settings, choose the controller when it appears. Microsoft describes Bluetooth connection for compatible controllers, and Microsoft Q&A community guidance identifies the listed device as “Xbox Wireless Controller.”
If the controller is not listed, check that it supports Bluetooth and is in pairing mode, then try again. An Xbox Wireless Adapter is not universally required; whether it is a suitable alternative depends on the controller and setup.

- Try the controller with another compatible Xbox or PC.
- Try another controller with the original Xbox or PC.
If one controller fails on multiple hosts, including over USB with a known-good data cable, while another controller works with the original host, controller hardware trouble becomes more plausible. If several controllers fail on the same host, investigate that console or PC instead. These are diagnostic clues, not definitive repair findings; contact Xbox support or check warranty and service options before replacing hardware.

Choose the right connection for the next test
