An S Pen can appear to “stop working” for several different reasons. Basic writing, hover detection, the side-button, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) pairing, Air actions, and charging are separate functions. A pen may still write even when it cannot connect wirelessly, show a battery level, or perform remote actions. Conversely, a pen can be paired and charged while its tip or the host device has a writing problem.
Start by identifying your exact Galaxy phone or tablet and S Pen model, then test the failed function in isolation. The steps below cover compatibility, charging, wireless controls, writing, cross-testing, replacement, and service without assuming that every S Pen supports every feature.
First determine what “not working” means
Before changing settings, separate the symptom into one or more of these categories:
- Writing or touch: the screen does not respond to the pen tip, strokes are intermittent, or touch works only with a finger.
- Hover: the pointer or preview does not appear when the tip is close to the display.
- Button behavior: pressing the pen button does not trigger its expected action.
- Wireless features: Air actions, remote camera controls, presentation controls, or another Bluetooth-dependent feature does not respond.
- Charging or battery status: the pen does not charge in its slot or on its tablet charging area, or no battery percentage appears.
“Connect” normally refers to BLE functions, not ordinary writing. A compatible pen can write through the digitizer without being paired. Therefore, missing Air actions or a missing battery indicator is not automatically a fault.

Write down exactly what happens before troubleshooting. For example, “the pen makes marks but Air actions are unavailable” points to a different path from “the pen pairs but makes no marks.” Also note whether the failure began after changing a case, screen protector, power-saving setting, or S Pen. This simple symptom record prevents unrelated fixes from being mixed together.
Check S Pen and Galaxy model compatibility
Samsung’s current S Pen range does not have one universal specification. Depending on the pen and host device, writing, hover, the button, BLE, Air actions, and charging may be present in different combinations. Check the model name in the phone or tablet’s device information and identify the pen supplied with it. If you are considering a replacement, match the exact Galaxy model rather than buying a generic “S Pen.”

Do not diagnose an unsupported feature as a failed component. Samsung’s model guidance distinguishes pens that write only from pens that also pair, charge, or provide Air actions. A writing-only model can be operating normally even if Settings never shows a battery level. Similarly, placing a non-charging pen on a tablet’s magnetic area cannot add a battery or remote functions that the hardware does not contain.

Identify the host and pen separately
Use the phone or tablet’s device-information screen to record the full Galaxy model, including its generation or variant. Then identify the pen by its label, packaging, or the model supplied with that device. Do not rely only on color or shape: different generations can look similar while having different wireless and charging capabilities.
If the pen came from another Galaxy device, assume compatibility is unproven until Samsung’s compatibility information confirms it. Some touch, hover, and button functions work across certain other Galaxy devices, but compatibility is not universal. A successful fit in the slot or a visible cursor does not guarantee that BLE, Air actions, or charging will work.
Fix charging and missing battery information
Use the charging method designed for the pen
Charging is model-specific. For an integrated phone S Pen that supports charging, insert the pen completely into its storage slot. For a tablet S Pen that supports charging, attach it to the tablet’s designated charging area. The correct orientation depends on the tablet generation:
- Galaxy Tab S6: place the pen with its tip facing away from the cameras.
- Galaxy Tab S7 and Tab S8: place the pen with its tip facing toward the cameras.
- Galaxy Tab S9 and Tab S10: either direction can charge the pen.
An S Pen Pro uses a USB-C cable rather than the phone or tablet’s magnetic charging strip. Follow the pen’s charging indicator and allow the connection to settle before removing it.
Do not substitute a phone slot, tablet charging strip, or USB-C cable based solely on appearance. A pen designed for one method may not accept another method, and forcing it into a compartment or connector can damage the pen or device. If your model guide says the pen does not charge, there is no charging fault to repair.
Confirm that charging is actually supported
Some current S Pen models have no rechargeable battery. They can write, but they will never display a battery percentage or charge on a tablet. Likewise, a pen without BLE cannot gain Air actions by being placed on a charging area. Verify the pen model’s capabilities before replacing a tablet, charger, or pen.

This distinction also explains why two pens used with the same tablet can behave differently. One may support wireless remote features and show a percentage, while another is intended only for writing and has no battery reading. Compare the model specifications, not just the physical charging location.
Improve contact and alignment
Remove the pen and attach it again at the marked charging location, using the orientation for your tablet generation. A case, cover, or accessory can hold the pen slightly away from the charging coil. Temporarily remove third-party covers and test with the tablet uncovered. Make sure the pen is seated flat and is not shifted along the back or edge.

If an indicator or battery reading appears only after the pen is fully seated, the earlier problem was alignment rather than a failed battery. Repeat the test without a magnetic accessory so that the accessory is not masking the result.
Check the battery percentage correctly
On a supported Bluetooth-connected pen, open the Air command menu, select its Settings, and look for the S Pen battery level. The percentage may not appear while the pen is not connected wirelessly. That absence alone does not prove that the battery is empty or defective.
If the menu has no battery entry, return to the compatibility check. A missing entry can mean the pen is not connected, the device does not support wireless battery reporting, or the pen itself has no rechargeable battery. Do not use the missing number as the sole reason to purchase a replacement.
Avoid wireless-charging interference
Samsung advises not to use a wireless charging pad when the S Pen is low or when the device needs to connect to the pen. Signals from a charging pad can interfere with the pen’s connection and prevent pairing or charging behavior from completing. Move the phone or tablet away from the pad, then reseat the pen or retry the connection.

Restore Air actions and other wireless controls
These steps apply only to BLE-capable S Pens and compatible Galaxy devices. They cannot add Air actions to a pen that was designed without them. Basic writing may continue during a BLE failure because writing and remote control use different parts of the system.
Keep the pen within operating range
Keep the S Pen close to the phone or tablet with a clear path between them. Samsung Support states: “In order for Air actions or Remote features to work, the S Pen needs to be within 30 feet of your phone or tablet with nothing in between.” Wireless functions can disconnect when the pen is beyond that range. Test beside the device rather than from another room.

For troubleshooting, do not test at the edge of the stated range. Hold the pen near the phone or tablet, perform the action, and then move farther away only after it works. Walls, furniture, cases, and other obstructions can make a marginal connection less reliable even before the nominal 30-foot limit.
Check device modes and permissions
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- If Power saving mode is enabled, open its options and ensure Limit apps and Home screen is not enabled. That restriction can interfere with S Pen wireless behavior.
- Open the phone or tablet’s app permissions for Air command and allow Nearby devices and Physical activity when those permissions are requested.
- Remove a third-party case, magnetic cover, or other accessory that could obstruct recognition, then try the pen again.
After changing a setting, return the pen to its charging or storage position, remove it, and test the remote function close to the device. Checking each item separately makes it clear which change affected the result. If the pen has no BLE capability, these settings will not create a connection.
Reset the S Pen when the option exists
On supported models, use Settings > Advanced features > S Pen > More options > Reset S Pen. The reset restores remote features and other S Pen settings to their defaults, so any customized actions must be configured again. The menu may not be available on models without BLE or Air actions. Do not treat a missing reset option as an error; it can indicate that the pen has no resettable wireless subsystem.
Reset only after checking compatibility, range, modes, permissions, and accessories. A reset cannot repair a pen that lacks the requested feature, a damaged tip, or a host-device digitizer problem. After resetting, test the default remote behavior before customizing actions again.
When the S Pen will not write
Writing failure needs a different diagnosis from a pairing failure. Samsung’s published troubleshooting does not provide one model-independent cleaning, recalibration, or repair sequence that can safely be applied to every Galaxy device. Avoid forcing the nib, inserting tools into the pen slot, or applying liquids while guessing at a fix.
Verify the combination and remove obstructions
Confirm that the pen is intended for the exact Galaxy model. Remove a thick screen protector, magnetic accessory, or third-party cover temporarily if it could affect recognition. Then test a short stroke in a basic note or drawing app. If touch works with a finger but not the pen, the issue is isolated to pen recognition, compatibility, or the digitizer’s pen layer.
Test in more than one simple app if the first app could have its own input setting. Keep the test short and repeatable: draw a line, lift the pen, and draw again. Record whether hover or the button works even when ink does not. Those observations help support separate a pen-tip problem from a display-input problem.
Separate writing from wireless symptoms
A pen that writes normally but lacks a battery percentage or Air actions may simply be a non-BLE or non-charging model. A pen that pairs but leaves no marks has a different fault path. Record which of these work: finger touch, pen writing, hover, button, Air actions, and charging. This prevents a wireless reset from being used as a supposed cure for a damaged tip or display digitizer.
Do not conclude that a low battery caused every writing problem. On models designed to write without charging, battery status is irrelevant to basic ink input. Conversely, on a BLE model, low power can affect wireless functions while writing remains available. Treat each function as a separate test.

Cross-test before assuming a repair is needed
Use the original pen on another known-compatible Galaxy device, and, if available, use a known-good compatible S Pen on the original device. Compatibility is not universal, so use models that Samsung identifies as compatible rather than any nearby stylus.
- If the original pen fails to write on another compatible device, the pen is the likely failed component.
- If a known-good compatible pen also fails on the original device, the host phone or tablet is the stronger suspect.
- If the original pen works elsewhere and the known-good pen works on the original device, recheck the first test for seating, case interference, or an incorrect model pairing.
Run the tests with accessories removed and, for wireless symptoms, close to the host device. A cross-test is useful only when the second pen and second device are genuinely compatible; a failure with an unsupported combination proves little.
If writing remains unavailable after a compatible cross-test, contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider instead of attempting an unverified internal repair.
Decide between replacement and device service
Replace the pen only after the cross-test points to the pen. Select a replacement for the exact Galaxy phone or tablet and for the functions you actually need. A listing that supports writing may not support BLE, Air actions, or charging. Conversely, a BLE pen may not be the correct physical or firmware match for your device.

When searching, use a phrase such as Samsung S Pen replacement followed by your exact Galaxy model, then verify the seller’s compatibility list against Samsung’s model guidance. Do not assume that one generic replacement fits all Galaxy devices.
Decide what you are paying for before choosing an option. If you need only handwriting, a compatible writing-only pen may be sufficient. If you use remote camera or presentation controls, you need a model with BLE and Air actions. When to contact Samsung support
Seek manufacturer or authorized service help when a known-compatible pen fails on multiple compatible devices, when multiple known-good pens fail on the same phone or tablet, or when the device’s display layer appears to reject pen input after accessories are removed. Provide the exact phone or tablet model, S Pen model, which functions work, the charging method used, and the results of both cross-tests. Contact support rather than continuing to experiment if the pen or device has physical damage, if the pen will not seat normally, or if a connector or charging area appears damaged. Do not open the pen or device during diagnosis; an internal repair procedure is not universal across Galaxy generations.
