An Enshrouded server can report “Server Overloaded” even when Task Manager shows modest overall CPU or memory use. The usual cause is a saturated simulation thread, too many configured player slots for the processor, or a network problem being mistaken for server load. Diagnose those separately: measure the server process and individual CPU cores during the warning, compare the machine with Keen Games’ published capacity guidance, lower slotCount when simulation capacity is insufficient, and check reachability on the query and Steam ports.

This guide uses Keen Games’ 2024–2026 server documentation to show what to measure, which settings are safe to change, how to protect saves, and when self-hosting or managed hosting is the more practical choice.

What “Server Overloaded” means in Enshrouded

The warning is about the server keeping up with its simulation and communication workload, not simply whether the host computer’s total resources have reached 100 percent. A game server may depend heavily on one or a few CPU threads. If that work cannot finish on time, players see delayed actions, rubber-banding, creatures or objects snapping back, and interactions that complete several seconds late while aggregate CPU usage still looks low.

Three different failures can look similar:

  • Simulation capacity: the CPU cannot process the world and all active players quickly enough. Player count, busy bases and world activity increase this load.
  • Memory or storage capacity: the server, operating system or save process lacks available memory or fast disk access. Large worlds also produce larger save files.
  • Network reachability: a blocked port, router rule, DNS problem or unstable link prevents discovery or joining. That is a connectivity fault, not proof that the CPU is overloaded.

Start by recording when the warning occurs, how many players are online, and whether the symptom is delayed simulation or an inability to discover and join the server. That distinction prevents you from buying RAM to solve a firewall problem or forwarding ports to solve a saturated CPU.

Official hardware and bandwidth requirements

Keen Games publishes two useful planning points. The first covers four to six players; the second covers a full 16-player configuration. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every world, base or operating system will behave identically.

Concurrent players Recommended processor Memory Storage Upload bandwidth
4–6 3.2 GHz, 6-core/12-thread Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD CPU 16 GB system RAM SSD with at least 30 GB free 2 Mbit/s per active player
Up to 16 3.7 GHz, 8-core/16-thread CPU 16 GB system RAM SSD with at least 30 GB free 2 Mbit/s per active player

The bandwidth figure scales with the active player count: four players imply about 8 Mbit/s of upload capacity, six imply about 12 Mbit/s, and 16 imply about 32 Mbit/s. Treat those as the game’s published planning values, not as an internet-speed guarantee; other traffic on the same connection consumes part of the available upload.

Keen’s 2025 FAQ reports approximately 4.4 GB of physical RAM for an idle server, up to 100 MB of additional physical RAM per player, and no more than 6 GB of total physical RAM for the server process. Leave operating-system and background-process headroom above that footprint. A machine with 16 GB can therefore meet the stated memory recommendation while still suffering if other applications, antivirus scans, virtual machines or paging consume the remainder.

Measure the problem before changing settings

  1. Reproduce and record the warning. Note the timestamp, player count, locations, major bases or events in progress, and whether everyone experiences delay or only players on one connection.
  2. Watch the server process, not only total CPU. During the warning, inspect per-core utilization, the game-server process, memory commitment, disk activity and network upload. A single busy core can be the limiting resource even when total CPU appears low.
  3. Separate symptoms. Rubber-banding, delayed crafting and late creature reactions indicate simulation or network latency. A server missing from the browser, a timeout while joining or an immediate disconnect points first to reachability and port configuration.
  4. Compare actual concurrency with the official baseline. Use the four-to-six-player recommendation for a small group and the stronger 16-player recommendation for a full server. Do not size from the maximum slot value alone; the world and its activity matter.
  5. Check the host’s competing work. Pause downloads, video encoding, backups and other workloads while testing. This does not change the game’s limits, but it shows whether an unrelated process is stealing CPU time, memory or upload capacity.

There is no official universal CPU-percentage threshold that guarantees an overload warning will disappear. Use the measurements to identify the constrained resource, then change one variable and observe another session.

Lower player slots to reduce simulation load

The clearest official control is the slotCount value in enshrouded_server.json. Keen documents a range of 1–16 and states that lowering the number of slots can mitigate CPU or RAM bottlenecks. Each configured slot represents another possible player and therefore increases the server’s potential workload, even if every slot is not occupied at the same moment.

Change slotCount safely

  1. Stop the Enshrouded dedicated-server process cleanly.
  2. Back up enshrouded_server.json and the world-save directory before editing.
  3. Open the JSON file in the server installation directory with a plain-text editor.
  4. Find the existing slotCount entry and choose a value that matches the group you can actually support, such as 4 or 6 instead of 16.
  5. Keep the value as a number, not quoted text, and preserve commas and braces. A minimal valid entry looks like {"slotCount": 6} when it is part of a correctly formatted configuration object.
  6. Save the file, restart the server and watch the process while the same number of players reconnect.

Lowering slots reduces the maximum concurrency; it does not make a weak processor equivalent to the 3.7 GHz, eight-core recommendation. If a four-player group still overloads the host, continue measuring per-core CPU, storage and network conditions rather than lowering the value indefinitely.

Repair a stale or malformed configuration file

A malformed JSON file can prevent the server from starting. An old file can also retain settings that no longer match the current server version. Keen Games says that when the configuration file is missing, the server creates a fresh one. If an old file is incorrectly updated, deleting it and allowing regeneration is the documented recovery path.

  1. Stop the server and copy the current configuration, saves and logs to a separate backup location.
  2. Check the startup log for JSON syntax errors or an inability to parse the configuration.
  3. If the file is malformed or appears stale after an update, remove or rename the old file rather than repeatedly editing unknown settings.
  4. Start the server once so it can generate a clean enshrouded_server.json.
  5. Reapply only documented settings, including the desired slotCount and queryPort, then restart and test.

Do not paste settings from unrelated guides without checking that they belong to the current server version. A clean file also gives you a reliable baseline when reporting a reproducible problem to Keen Games.

Keep CPU simulation responsive

Processor frequency and per-core performance matter more than a large core count by itself. Keen’s guidance rises from a 3.2 GHz six-core/12-thread CPU for four to six players to a 3.7 GHz eight-core/16-thread CPU for 16 players. If one core is consistently busy during the warning, a faster processor or fewer simultaneous players addresses the limiting resource more directly than adding memory.

  • Use the operating system’s high-performance or balanced power profile rather than a battery-saving mode on a laptop or compact host.
  • Close or reschedule CPU-heavy applications during play sessions.
  • Keep the server process on the local SSD and avoid running it inside a heavily contended virtual machine while diagnosing performance.
  • Test with the same player count after each change so you can attribute an improvement to a specific adjustment.

These steps remove avoidable contention; they cannot compensate for a processor below the published baseline. If the warning appears only when the group reaches a particular player count, treat that count as the host’s practical limit and configure slots accordingly.

Manage RAM, SSD space and world saves

The server’s reported memory footprint is modest compared with the 16 GB system recommendation, but the host needs room for Windows or Linux, file caching and other services. Keen’s figures—about 4.4 GB physical RAM at idle, up to 100 MB more per player and no more than 6 GB total physical RAM—describe the server process, not all software on the machine.

Storage performance and free capacity are separate concerns. Keen recommends an SSD with at least 30 GB free. Keep additional headroom for updates, logs, temporary files and backups rather than filling the drive to that minimum.

World saves are created every five minutes and can range from about 1 MB to 100 MB, especially in worlds containing large bases. A save that is large or slow to write can coincide with a brief pause, and a nearly full drive can make routine maintenance unreliable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect saves before performance work

  • Copy the world-save directory before changing configuration or updating the server.
  • Retain several dated backups so a corrupted or unwanted world change can be reversed.
  • Keep saves and logs on the SSD, with free space beyond the 30 GB installation recommendation.
  • Do not assume that more RAM will fix a slow or full disk; memory and storage are different bottlenecks.

Check network reachability independently

The default Enshrouded query port is 15637. Steam ports are also required. The configured query port must match the host firewall and router rules; otherwise the server may be running normally but invisible or unreachable to players.

  1. Open enshrouded_server.json and note the configured queryPort. If it remains at the default, use 15637.
  2. Allow the configured query port and the required Steam ports through the host firewall.
  3. Forward the same ports to the server’s local IP address on the router, if players connect from outside the local network.
  4. Confirm that the local IP has not changed. A DHCP change can invalidate a previously correct forwarding rule.
  5. When discovery or joining fails, clear Steam’s download cache and flush DNS as recommended in Keen Games’ network troubleshooting guidance. On Windows, the DNS flush command is ipconfig /flushdns.
  6. Retest from a player connection outside the host’s local network when possible.

A port or DNS fault explains discovery and connection failures; it does not establish that the server is CPU-overloaded. Conversely, perfect port forwarding cannot remove rubber-banding caused by insufficient simulation time.

Option CPU and slot control Network and maintenance Saves and configuration Best fit
Self-host on your own PC or server Complete control; you must provide enough per-core performance and reduce slotCount when necessary. You configure firewall, router, Steam ports, updates and monitoring. Direct access to JSON, logs and world backups. Owners who want maximum control and can maintain the host.
Upgrade the self-hosted machine A faster CPU addresses simulation limits; additional RAM helps only when system memory is genuinely constrained. Existing network configuration remains your responsibility. Existing save and backup workflow remains available. Groups that want to keep control but need more capacity.
Managed dedicated hosting Capacity depends on the selected plan and provider; verify CPU class and supported slots rather than assuming every plan is equivalent. The provider generally handles much of the public networking and machine maintenance, while you still need to understand backups and settings. Check how saves, downloads and configuration access work before migrating. Groups that prefer predictable operations over hardware and port administration.

Keen Games’ 2026 FAQ says it partnered with GPORTAL to offer in-game dedicated-server rentals and that other providers can also be used. Availability, pricing and regional performance vary, so confirm those details for your location before moving a world. Hosting changes the operational workload; it is not a guarantee against a game-server bug or an overloaded plan.

Use a controlled test after each change

  1. Pick a repeatable scenario, such as all players entering the same busy base or using the area where the warning normally appears.
  2. Record player count, server-process CPU, busiest core, memory, disk activity and upload rate for several minutes.
  3. Change only one factor—slot count, host workload, network rule or hardware—and restart if required.
  4. Repeat the same scenario and compare symptoms and measurements.
  5. Restore the backup if the change introduces startup errors, missing settings or unexpected world behavior.

This method distinguishes a genuine capacity improvement from a warning that simply did not occur during a lighter session.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Symptom Most likely area First action
Warning appears during busy bases or when more players join CPU simulation or excessive configured concurrency Inspect per-core usage, compare with Keen’s CPU baseline and lower slotCount.
Rubber-banding affects everyone while the server remains discoverable Simulation time or upload saturation Check the server process and outbound bandwidth; stop competing workloads and retest.
Server is missing from the browser Query or Steam ports, firewall, router or DNS Verify queryPort, forwarding and firewall rules; clear Steam’s download cache and flush DNS.
Players time out while joining Reachability or unstable network path Test from outside the local network and verify every required Steam port.
Server will not start after editing JSON Malformed or stale configuration Restore the backup or regenerate the file, then reapply documented settings only.
Short pauses coincide with saving Disk performance, low free space or large world saves Keep saves on the SSD, maintain free space and retain backups; monitor the five-minute save cycle.
All documented checks pass but overload persists Version-specific bug or workload not covered by published guidance Capture logs, configuration, player count, timings and reproducible steps for Keen Games’ bug-report path.

When to report the problem

Escalate to Keen Games when the host meets the relevant published baseline, the configuration is valid, slots are appropriate, storage has room, and ports are correctly reachable but the warning remains reproducible. Include the server version, operating system, CPU model and clock speed, RAM, SSD details, player count, slotCount, timestamps, logs and a description of whether the failure is rubber-banding, discovery or joining. Community reports about a particular operating system, base design or compatibility layer may suggest hypotheses, but they are not guarantees for every server.

A useful report separates facts from assumptions: state what the server process and individual cores measured during the warning, which ports were tested, and whether lowering the player count changed the symptom. That information lets the developer distinguish a simulation limit from a networking or configuration defect.
