The “An operating system wasn’t found” message does not automatically mean Windows must be reinstalled or that your drive has failed. It means the computer could not locate a bootable Windows installation. First check whether firmware detects the internal drive and selects the right Windows boot entry; then try Windows Recovery Environment’s Startup Repair before considering command-line repair, reset, or reinstall.
What the error means
The message is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The computer may be trying to boot from the wrong device, may not be finding the Windows boot entry or boot configuration, or may have a drive or connection problem. The error alone cannot distinguish among these causes. Microsoft documents this wording in an Azure virtual-machine scenario, but the exact message shown on a PC can vary: Microsoft Learn: “Operating system not found” troubleshooting.
Formatting is not the first step. Start with checks that do not deliberately erase files, and stop if the drive is missing from firmware or your files are irreplaceable and not backed up.

Check the boot device and drive first
- Shut down and disconnect unnecessary external storage. Remove USB drives, memory cards, and other removable storage that might be selected at startup. Leave basic input devices connected.
- Check whether firmware detects the internal drive. Enter BIOS/UEFI setup using the method specified in your PC or motherboard manual. Menu names and keys vary by manufacturer. Look for the internal SSD or HDD in the storage or device list.
- Check boot priority. If the drive is detected, look for Windows Boot Manager or the correct system drive in the boot options and ensure it is selected appropriately. Do not make unrelated firmware changes.
If the error began after hardware was changed, check the drive and its connections only as directed by the device or motherboard manufacturer. A drive that does not appear in firmware needs a connection or hardware diagnosis; Windows boot-file repair cannot fix a disk the computer cannot detect.

A Microsoft Community moderator’s guidance for this error also recommends removing external devices and checking firmware settings and boot priority, while cautioning that incorrect BIOS/CMOS changes can cause problems. See the Microsoft Community response. Do not toggle Legacy/CSM, Secure Boot, or UEFI/Legacy modes as a general-purpose fix: those settings depend on the computer and how Windows was installed.
Run Startup Repair before reinstalling Windows
If the PC opens Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), use its built-in repair option:

If WinRE does not open, use a working PC to create official Windows installation media. Microsoft requires a blank USB flash drive with at least 8 GB; creating the media deletes everything already on that drive. Follow Microsoft’s instructions to create Windows installation media.

If BitLocker is enabled, most WinRE recovery options require the recovery key. Retrieve it from the Microsoft account or organization associated with the device before assuming recovery is unavailable; do not attempt to bypass encryption. Microsoft also advises backing up important files before recovery because some recovery options can cause data loss.
Consider a BCD command only when the installation is identified
If Startup Repair fails and recovery can see the Windows installation, a targeted boot-configuration repair may be appropriate. A 2018 Microsoft Community answer suggests opening Command Prompt from installation-media recovery and running bootrec /rebuildbcd, then accepting the discovered Windows installation if prompted. This is community guidance for a possible BCD problem, not a universal fix or a guarantee.

Do not run commands that guess drive letters or alter partitions before identifying the Windows partition and boot layout. Drive letters in recovery Command Prompt can differ from those in normal Windows. Microsoft Learn’s detailed partition and BCD instructions concern Azure virtual machines, not ordinary consumer PCs; they illustrate why BIOS-style and UEFI boot layouts differ, rather than providing a consumer-PC recipe. In particular, do not blindly mark a partition active or copy VM-specific commands to a laptop or desktop.

Choose the next step based on what you find
- Firmware does not detect the internal drive: Investigate the drive connection, slot, controller, or possible hardware failure. A recovery USB cannot repair an undetected disk.
- Firmware detects the drive and WinRE sees Windows: Try Startup Repair first. Consider a carefully targeted BCD repair only if you can identify the correct installation and boot layout.
- The drive may be failing or contains critical files: Prioritize assessment and data recovery over repeated repair writes or reinstall attempts.
- Repair tools do not work: Reset or reinstall is a later, more disruptive option, not another name for Startup Repair. Review Microsoft’s stated file consequences for the specific recovery choice before proceeding.
Reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything. That is different from choosing Repair your computer and running Startup Repair. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; Microsoft says free software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes are no longer provided after that date. Check Microsoft’s recovery guidance for the current options and their consequences before choosing reset or reinstall.
