A slow MSI Modern laptop does not automatically need a new SSD, more memory, or a factory reset. First identify when the slowdown occurs and check Task Manager to see whether CPU, memory, or disk use is unusually high. Then work through reversible steps—disconnect accessories, update Windows and model-specific MSI software, reduce unnecessary background activity, check for malware, and assess heat—before considering recovery or repair.

Start by identifying when the laptop slows down

“Slow” can describe several different problems: a long startup, delayed response in one application, a generally sluggish desktop, or performance that drops after sustained work. Those patterns point toward different checks. Before changing settings, note when the problem began and what was happening at the time. This gives you a way to tell whether a change actually helped.

  • Slow startup: Check whether the delay happens before or after you sign in. If it starts after sign-in, watch which applications become active and consume resources. A delay that appears only after login often deserves a different investigation from a delay that occurs before Windows loads.
  • Slow all the time: Observe CPU, memory, and disk activity while opening the programs that feel sluggish. A busy component can leave less capacity for other work. Record what is busy rather than relying on how loud the fan sounds or how warm the case feels.
  • Slow only during demanding or prolonged work: Check resource use and ventilation while the problem is occurring. Heat may be associated with performance degradation, particularly when the laptop has been working for a sustained period.
  • Slowdown after an update, new application, or attached device: Note the timing. If practical, disconnect nonessential devices or close the recently added software temporarily to see whether the pattern changes. A change in behavior after removing one variable is useful evidence, but it does not by itself prove that the device or application is defective.

Write down the model number, the Windows version if you know it, when the slowdown started, and whether it happens on battery, on AC power, or both. Also note whether restarting temporarily helps. These observations make later support conversations more productive and prevent you from repeating changes without knowing what happened.

These are diagnostic questions, not proof of a particular fault. MSI’s guidance identifies several possible contributors to high CPU, memory, or disk usage, including background programs, Windows services, virtual-memory configuration, and low hardware configuration. One symptom alone does not establish which cause applies to your laptop.

Check which resource is busy in Task Manager

When the laptop feels slow, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Look at the CPU, Memory, and Disk columns and give the list a moment to reflect the workload. If one resource is heavily occupied, sort by its column to identify the applications or processes using it. Compare the list while the laptop is slow with the list after the workload has finished. A brief spike during startup or an intensive task is different from sustained high use while the laptop is idle.

Do not close every process that looks unfamiliar. Windows and MSI components may have names that are not obvious, and ending a critical process can create a new problem. First identify the application or service, note whether it is expected, and close only software you recognize and do not need. If you are unsure, leave it running and use the information when consulting MSI or a technician.

Use the result to choose the next check

  • High CPU: Identify the process using it. If it is an application you opened, close it normally when you are finished. If you do not recognize a process, do not end it simply because its name is unfamiliar; first check whether it belongs to Windows or software you use. A single busy application can make the whole desktop feel slow even when the storage drive is healthy.
  • High memory: Look for applications you can close or reduce. If memory use stays high with your normal workload, the laptop’s configuration may be a factor, but this observation alone is not enough to justify an upgrade. Check whether several applications are open at once and whether the slowdown disappears when they are closed.
  • High disk activity: Identify the process responsible and check drive health with MSI Center if the feature is available on your installation. High activity does not by itself show that the drive is failing. A legitimate update, scan, or file operation can temporarily keep the disk busy.

MSI’s older FAQ offers 4GB and 8GB RAM as examples when discussing a low hardware configuration. Those examples are not a current buying threshold, a specification for every Modern laptop, or a diagnosis of your particular system. Do not infer that you need more RAM—or a different drive—without checking your exact model and the bottleneck you observed.

Try reversible checks before changing the system

1. Disconnect nonessential external devices

Unplug accessories you do not need, such as external storage or other peripherals, and see whether the behavior changes. This is a quick way to rule out an external variable. Test with the laptop in the same workload and power state so that the comparison is meaningful. If you rely on a device for your normal workload, reconnect it after the check and compare like with like.

If disconnecting an accessory changes the symptom, reconnect it by itself and test again. That narrows down which device or connection is involved without requiring you to alter Windows settings. Do not discard the device or assume the laptop is incompatible until you have confirmed that the behavior is repeatable.

2. Install available Windows updates

Run Windows Update and allow any applicable updates to finish installing. Restart if Windows requests it, then check whether the original slowdown remains. Updates can change the system, so avoid interrupting installation or assuming that a pending restart is the only cause without checking how the laptop behaves afterward.

Test the same activity before and after the restart: for example, open the same application, wait for the same files to load, and observe Task Manager again. If an update is still pending, complete it before drawing conclusions. If the slowdown began immediately after an update, record that timing for support rather than repeatedly reinstalling updates on your own.

3. Find updates for your exact MSI Modern model

Use the complete model identifier from your laptop to open its MSI support page. Check the downloads listed for that specific model for relevant drivers, BIOS updates, and utilities. Do not install BIOS or firmware files from a similar-looking Modern model: model families can contain different hardware and firmware requirements.

Before installing firmware, read the instructions and compatibility information on your own support page, keep the laptop on reliable power, and do not interrupt the process. A BIOS or firmware update is not a general speed button; use it when MSI lists it for your exact model and the release is relevant to the problem or system maintenance you are performing.

MSI’s Modern 15 F13M support listing provides a dated example of why model-specific checking matters: it showed BIOS E14S1IMS.507 dated July 29, 2026, and Intel ME firmware dated September 29, 2026. Those entries apply only as an example from that model’s page; they are not recommended downloads for other Modern laptops. Follow the instructions and compatibility information on your own model’s support page before installing firmware.

4. Reduce unnecessary background activity

Use Task Manager to identify applications consuming resources, then close only those you recognize and do not need at that moment. If an application repeatedly launches or runs in the background, review its own settings to see whether you can limit that behavior. Make one change at a time and retest, so you know which change affected the symptom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid disabling Windows services or unfamiliar processes as a general “speed-up” measure. MSI lists Windows services and virtual-memory configuration among possible causes of high resource use, but that does not mean changing them without diagnosis is safe or appropriate. An aggressive cleanup can disable functions you need and make later troubleshooting harder.

5. Scan for malware

Run a malware scan with Microsoft Defender. MSI’s troubleshooting material also describes the Microsoft Defender Offline scan path: open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, choose Scan options, select Microsoft Defender Offline scan, and start the scan. Windows may restart to perform it, so save your work first. Menu wording can vary with the Windows version.

A scan is a diagnostic and remediation step, not a guarantee that every malicious program will be found or removed. If a threat is detected, follow Defender’s instructions and retest after remediation. If scans repeatedly fail, or you cannot keep security tools running, tell MSI or a qualified technician rather than downloading several unrelated “cleanup” utilities.

Check heat and MSI Center diagnostics

Look for a slowdown that follows sustained work

If performance drops after a long period of demanding use, check whether the vents have clear space and the laptop is not resting on a surface that blocks airflow. While the slowdown is happening, inspect CPU and memory activity in Task Manager. MSI’s overheating guidance connects overheating with performance degradation and recommends checking updates, resource use, and ventilation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Move the computer to a hard, open surface and remove objects covering the vents. Do not treat a warm case or fan noise alone as proof of overheating; those can occur during normal work. The useful pattern is a repeatable performance drop after sustained load that improves after the workload stops or the system cools. If the laptop becomes unusually hot, shuts down, or behaves erratically, stop demanding work and seek service rather than continuing to stress it.

Run System Diagnosis if your installation supports it

On supported installations, MSI Center may offer Features > System Diagnosis. MSI describes functions that can include disk cleaning, memory release, and a drive-health check. Availability and feature set depend on the product and software version, so the menu may not appear on every Modern laptop.

Use the tool to inspect or clean where appropriate; do not treat a cleanup result as proof that a hardware fault has been fixed. Run it when the laptop is otherwise stable, note any health warning it reports, and compare the result with what Task Manager showed. If System Diagnosis is unavailable, continue with the exact-model support page and the other checks rather than installing an unrelated utility.

Decide whether an upgrade is actually warranted

Consider a component change only after the checks above point to a specific limitation. A laptop that is slow because an application is consuming CPU or a background task is using the disk will not necessarily improve from a hardware replacement. Likewise, MSI’s reference to a traditional hard disk without an SSD describes one possible low-configuration scenario; it does not establish that your Modern model has a hard disk or supports a particular replacement drive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Task Manager and a drive-health check suggest a storage problem, verify the existing drive type and the replacement interface supported by your exact model before buying anything. Check MSI’s service documentation or ask a qualified technician if compatibility is unclear. An NVMe M.2 SSD is only a possible path where the model supports it; the label alone does not establish compatibility.

Possible next step When it fits What to verify first Cost and effort considerations
Software cleanup or update A process, pending update, or unnecessary background application is associated with the measured slowdown. Confirm the process or update is relevant, then check whether the symptom changes afterward. Usually involves little or no extra hardware cost, but time may be needed for updates, scans, and retesting.
Drive replacement Drive-health findings or a confirmed storage limitation make storage a plausible bottleneck. Exact model compatibility, current drive type, interface, warranty implications, backup, and data migration. Compare the drive’s price and capacity with the migration effort and any technician labor. A larger or faster drive is not useful if the interface is unsupported or storage is not the measured bottleneck.
Memory or other hardware service The workload consistently exceeds the installed configuration or a qualified diagnosis identifies a hardware issue. Exact model specifications, serviceability, warranty, and whether the change addresses the observed bottleneck. Account for the component price, installation effort, and possible service charge. Do not pay for an upgrade based only on a generic RAM example.

There are no model-independent upgrade specifications or prices that can be inferred from the fact that the laptop is an MSI Modern. Before any replacement, account for storage capacity, the effort and risk of migrating data, and whether the proposed component addresses the resource Task Manager showed as constrained. Back up files before service or migration.

  • DO MORE WITH DASHBOARD. Ensure your drive is optimized for prime performance with the downloadable WD_BLACK Dashboard (Windows only).

When comparing two legitimate options, use the same criteria: does the intervention address the measured bottleneck, is the drive or memory interface compatible, how much capacity will you gain, what will it cost, and how difficult will data migration be? If a software fix resolves the high resource use, it is generally more proportionate than buying a component. If a health check identifies a failing drive, continued use without a backup carries more risk than the purchase decision alone.

Use recovery or repair only after basic troubleshooting

Reconsider a recent hardware change

If the slowdown began after a hardware change, restore the original configuration when feasible and compare performance. This can help distinguish a compatibility issue from an unrelated slowdown. If reverting the change is not practical or requires opening the laptop, consult the model’s service information or a qualified repair provider rather than risking damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep notes about the original and changed configurations, including the drive or memory part and the date of the change. That information helps a technician test the correct condition. Do not assume that a component that physically fits is electrically or firmware-compatible with every Modern model.

Back up before system recovery

MSI places System Restore after its preceding troubleshooting checks. Use the recovery instructions applicable to your model and Windows installation, and back up important files first. Factory recovery is not a routine first-line speed fix: it can remove personal data or installed applications, and the available process varies by model.

Confirm where the backup is stored and that important files can be opened before beginning recovery. Make a list of applications and license information you will need afterward. Do not proceed until you understand which files and programs may be affected, and do not confuse a recovery procedure for a boot loop with the ordinary slow-performance sequence.

Contact MSI or a qualified repair provider if the issue remains

If Windows updates, model-specific software checks, malware scanning, background-load checks, and appropriate diagnostics do not resolve the problem, contact MSI customer service or a qualified local repair provider. Provide the complete model number, when the slowdown began, whether it occurs at startup or under sustained use, what Task Manager showed, and which troubleshooting steps you completed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include any drive-health warning, the timing of a recent update or hardware change, and whether disconnecting accessories or improving ventilation changed the behavior. This is more useful than simply reporting that the laptop is “slow.” If the laptop enters a boot loop or you cannot get into Windows, use MSI’s guidance for boot or recovery problems rather than treating it as an ordinary slow-performance case.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I buy an NVMe M.2 SSD for a slow MSI Modern laptop?

Only after confirming that storage is the measured bottleneck and that your exact Modern model supports the NVMe M.2 interface. Check the current drive type, MSI service documentation, warranty implications, capacity needs, backup, and data-migration effort. MSI’s mention of a traditional hard disk without an SSD is a possible scenario, not proof about your laptop.

Does seeing 4GB or 8GB of RAM mean my laptop needs an upgrade?

No. MSI’s older FAQ uses 4GB and 8GB as examples of a low hardware configuration. They are not a current buying threshold or a specification for every Modern model. First observe memory use with your normal workload and verify the exact model’s upgrade options.

When should I update the BIOS or Intel ME firmware?

Use the downloads on the support page for your complete model number and follow MSI’s compatibility and installation instructions. Do not copy firmware from a similar-looking Modern model. A Modern 15 F13M listing showed BIOS E14S1IMS.507 dated July 29, 2026, and Intel ME firmware dated September 29, 2026; those dates and files are examples for that model only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can overheating cause performance degradation?

Heat can be associated with a slowdown that appears after sustained work. Check ventilation, move the laptop to a hard open surface, and inspect CPU and memory activity while the problem occurs. Warmth or fan noise alone does not prove overheating, so use the repeatable workload pattern and resource checks as evidence.

Will a factory reset fix a slow MSI Modern laptop?

It may remove software causes, but it is a later step, not a first-line speed fix. MSI places System Restore after its preceding checks. Back up important files, understand that recovery can remove data and installed applications, and follow the recovery instructions for your exact model and Windows installation.

What information should I give MSI support?

Give the complete model number, when the slowdown began, whether it affects startup or follows sustained work, the CPU, memory, or disk process shown in Task Manager, any drive-health result, recent updates or hardware changes, and the troubleshooting steps you already completed. If Windows will not start or the laptop is in a boot loop, identify it as a boot or recovery problem.

The Bottom Line

Diagnose the bottleneck before spending money. Use Task Manager, Windows and exact-model MSI updates, malware and ventilation checks, and MSI Center diagnostics where available. Only then compare a compatible component upgrade, recovery, or professional service—and back up your data before any repair or reset.
