Start with the power path and alignment: connect the MagSafe or Qi2 charger to a compatible, working power adapter, remove the case and anything between the phone and charger, then center the iPhone (or let MagSafe snap into alignment). You should see the charging icon within a few seconds. If charging still does not start, check temperature and Battery settings, test another known-good charger and adapter, and follow Apple’s restart sequence. A persistent failure after those checks usually means the charger, adapter, or iPhone needs service.
What “won’t charge” can mean
Wireless charging problems do not all look the same. Identify the symptom before changing equipment:
- No charging icon: the charger may have no power, the phone may be off-center, or an obstruction may be blocking the charging field.
- Charging starts and stops: movement, a loose power connection, a case, a foreign object, or heat can interrupt charging.
- The percentage barely rises: the phone may be drawing power slowly, limiting charge because of temperature, or using a charger and adapter combination that cannot provide the expected rate.
- Charging stops around 80 percent: Optimized Battery Charging, a configured charge limit, or a warm battery can intentionally pause or limit charging.
- One charger works but another does not: the failing charger, cable, adapter, alignment, or compatibility is more likely than an iPhone-wide fault.
The checks below move from the most common, reversible causes to service-level faults.

Do these immediate checks first
- Power the charger correctly. Plug the wireless charger into a working outlet and an adapter that meets the charger maker’s requirements. For Apple’s MagSafe Charger, connect the charger to its compatible power adapter before placing the iPhone on it.
- Use a clear charging surface. Remove a thick, metal, or battery case. Take off a MagSafe wallet and remove cards, security badges, passports, key fobs, coins, or other objects between the phone and charger.
- Align the phone. Put an iPhone face up in the center of a Qi or Qi2 pad, or place it on the MagSafe charger so the magnets align. Keep the charger face up on a flat surface away from metal objects and foreign material.
- Look for the icon. The iPhone should begin charging a few seconds after correct placement. If it was already on the MagSafe charger before the charger was connected to power, remove the iPhone, wait three seconds, and place it back.
- Give it a cooler environment. Move both devices away from direct sun, a radiator, a car dashboard, or other heat. Then check Settings > Battery for a charging pause, charge-limit status, or an incompatible-charger warning.
If the icon appears and the percentage rises, the original problem was setup, interference, or temperature rather than a dead charging system.

Verify the power path and placement
Use the right adapter and a sound connection
A wireless pad cannot charge an iPhone if its own power input is missing or inadequate. Reseat the cable at the charger and adapter, confirm the adapter is firmly in the wall outlet, and try a different outlet. Inspect the cable, adapter, and charger for cuts, bent contacts, discoloration, unusual heat, or a loose connector; stop using visibly damaged accessories.
Peak performance depends on the exact iPhone model, MagSafe charger version, adapter rating, and system conditions. Apple’s current charge-speed guidance lists up to 25W for specified iPhone and MagSafe combinations, not as a universal MagSafe rate. Treat any advertised maximum as conditional rather than a guarantee for every iPhone.
Connect MagSafe before placing the iPhone
Apple’s setup sequence lets the MagSafe Charger verify that maximum power delivery is safe. Connect the charger to power first, place it face up, and then set the iPhone on it. If the phone was placed first, lift it off, wait three seconds, and reconnect it. A charging icon should appear shortly after the magnets engage. See Apple’s MagSafe Charger instructions for the current connection sequence and adapter requirements.

Qi charging has no magnetic lock on many iPhone and pad combinations. Place the phone face up at the pad’s center or at the location marked by the charger maker. A small offset can prevent the coils from coupling, especially when a camera bump or stand holds the phone at an angle. Re-center the phone after removing the case, and avoid moving it while charging; movement on a charging mat can interrupt power.

Remove cases, wallets, and foreign objects
The distance between the iPhone and charging coil matters. Test with the iPhone completely bare:
- Remove thick protective cases, metal-backed cases, battery cases, magnetic plates, and adhesive mounts.
- Remove a MagSafe wallet before charging.
- Never place payment cards, access badges, passports, or key fobs between an iPhone and a MagSafe charger; the magnetic field can affect their chips or magnetic strips.
- Clear coins, tools, paper clips, and other metal objects from the charger and the area immediately underneath it.
- Check that dust, grit, or a warped pad is not holding the phone away from the charging surface.
If the bare phone charges, reinstall the case and test again. A case that blocks charging is an accessory compatibility issue; replacing it with a case designed for the phone’s charging system is more appropriate than replacing a working iPhone.
Check temperature and Battery settings
Cool a hot phone or charger
iPhone charging can pause in extreme temperatures. Wireless charging itself produces heat, and a warm room, sunlight, gaming session, navigation, or a thick case can push the phone into a protective limit. Unplug the charger, move both devices to a cooler, dry place, remove the case, and let them return to a normal temperature before trying again. Do not cool an overheated iPhone with ice, a freezer, or liquid.

A phone that reaches roughly 80 percent and then stops is not necessarily defective. iOS can delay completion through Optimized Battery Charging, and a configured charge limit can intentionally stop at a selected level. Heat can also limit charging above 80 percent. Open Settings > Battery and read the status shown for charging, the charge limit, or temperature. If the message says charging is paused, follow the on-screen option to resume only when you need a full charge; do not disable a battery-protection feature merely to troubleshoot a normal pause.

- WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple MagSafe Charger and USB‑C integrated cable only. Power adapter sold separately.
Check for an incompatible-charger warning
Apple’s charge-speed guidance says iOS 26 can show an incompatible-charger message in Settings > Battery when it detects a connected charger that is not charging. Treat that message as evidence to check the charger’s certification, adapter, cable, and compatibility list rather than repeatedly repositioning a phone that the system has rejected. Read Apple’s charge-speed guidance for the current wording and supported combinations.
Compare with a known-good charging path
Testing one variable at a time separates a bad accessory from an iPhone fault.
- Keep the same iPhone bare and try another compatible wireless charger with its own known-good power adapter.
- Keep the original charger but use a different compatible adapter and cable, if the charger design permits a separate cable.
- Try the original charger with another iPhone that supports the same wireless standard, if one is available.
- Try a Qi-certified pad as a comparison for an iPhone 8 or later. MagSafe and Qi2-certified chargers are Apple’s recommended faster wireless options, but the actual rate still depends on the exact phone, charger, adapter, and conditions.
- If the iPhone is connected to USB power, disconnect it while testing wireless charging; an active wired connection means the phone will use that path instead of wireless charging.
Record what changes: whether an icon appears, whether charging remains stable for 10–15 minutes, and whether the battery percentage rises. If several known-good wireless paths fail on the same iPhone, the phone is the stronger service candidate. If only one charger fails, replace or service that accessory instead.
Restart and use Apple’s no-charge sequence
When power and alignment are correct but the iPhone still does not respond, use Apple’s general troubleshooting order. The port checks in this procedure address wired charging faults; they are not a reason to insert tools or liquid into a phone as a wireless-charging fix.

- Try a different wall outlet and confirm every connection is firm.
- Restart the iPhone using the procedure for its model.
- Inspect the charger, adapter, cable, and phone for visible damage.
- If you are also troubleshooting wired charging, look into the charging port for lint or debris. Do not use metal tools, compressed liquid, or household cleaners inside the phone.
- Leave the iPhone on a known-good power source for 30 minutes, even if it initially shows only a low-battery symbol.
- If it still will not start, follow the force-restart instructions for that iPhone generation, then leave it charging for another 30 minutes.
- If the iPhone still will not charge or power on, arrange service. Apple’s full sequence is in If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge.
A force restart cannot repair a failed coil or damaged accessory, but it can clear a temporary software state that prevents the charging interface from updating.
Know which iPhones and chargers are compatible
Compatibility is more specific than the word “wireless.” Apple says an iPhone 8 or later supports Qi-certified chargers. MagSafe adds magnetic alignment on supported iPhone models; it can also charge other Qi-compatible iPhones without magnetic alignment. Apple’s current guidance recommends MagSafe or a Qi2-certified wireless charger when faster wireless charging is the goal.
| Combination | What is established | What still varies |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 8 or later with a Qi-certified charger | Qi wireless charging is supported. | Charging power, alignment stability, and adapter requirements depend on the pad and iPhone. |
| Supported iPhone with MagSafe Charger | Magnets provide alignment; connect the charger to power before placing the phone. | Peak power depends on iPhone model, MagSafe version, adapter rating, and system conditions. Apple lists up to 25W for specified combinations. |
| Supported iPhone with a Qi2-certified charger | Qi2 is a faster wireless option identified in Apple’s charging guidance, with magnetic alignment on compatible implementations. | Exact speed and magnetic behavior depend on the specific charger and iPhone. |
| Qi-compatible iPhone on MagSafe hardware without magnetic support | The phone may charge as a Qi device without snapping into magnetic alignment. | It may need careful centering and will not necessarily receive MagSafe’s highest rate. |
Apple does not provide one universal Qi2 model-by-model speed table in the cited guidance. Before buying or troubleshooting, check the exact iPhone model, the charger’s Qi2 or MagSafe certification, the required adapter wattage and output, and the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Read Apple’s wireless-charging guide and Apple’s MagSafe information for iPhone for model-specific details.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
No icon on a MagSafe charger
- Connect the charger to power first, then remove and replace the iPhone after three seconds.
- Remove the case, wallet, and all objects from between the phone and charger.
- Try another adapter and outlet, then test the charger with a second compatible iPhone.
No icon on a flat Qi or Qi2 pad
- Place the bare iPhone face up at the marked center.
- Keep the phone still and remove magnetic plates or metal accessories.
- Try a second pad or a Qi-certified comparison charger.
Charging cuts in and out
- Check for movement, a loose cable, an unstable stand, or a case that shifts the phone away from the coil.
- Move the setup to a cooler location and check Settings > Battery.
- Keep foreign objects away from the charging surface.
Charging is slower than expected
- Confirm the iPhone model, charger version, adapter rating, and certification before comparing the claimed rate.
- Remove heat sources and the case; thermal limits reduce charging power.
- Do not treat an advertised maximum, including up to 25W on specified MagSafe combinations, as a guaranteed rate for every setup.
It stops near 80 percent
- Read the Battery screen for Optimized Battery Charging, a charge limit, or a temperature notice.
- Allow the phone to cool and observe whether charging resumes.
- Only investigate hardware after the settings and temperature explanations are excluded.
When replacing the charger makes sense
Buy a replacement only when testing identifies the accessory or when the current setup cannot meet the phone’s requirements. Compare these five items:

- iPhone model support: verify the exact model, not just the word “iPhone.”
- Certification and alignment: choose a MagSafe charger for supported magnetic alignment or a Qi2-certified charger when that standard fits your needs; Qi-certified equipment covers basic compatibility for iPhone 8 and later.
- Adapter requirement: confirm the charger’s required wattage and output. A pad sold without an adapter may need a separate compatible USB-C power adapter.
- Expected rate: use the rate stated for your exact phone-and-charger combination, with the adapter and iOS conditions included.
- Case and mount fit: make sure the case, car mount, camera bump, and stand do not create too much distance or movement.
A new charger cannot repair a damaged iPhone, and a higher-wattage adapter cannot force an unsupported model to charge faster. Keep the receipt and test the new setup bare before reinstalling accessories.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Arrange service when the iPhone will not charge on multiple known-good, compatible wireless chargers and adapters after alignment, case removal, cooling, restart, and the 30-minute charging attempts. Service is also appropriate when the phone or charger becomes unusually hot, smells scorched, shows swelling, has liquid or impact damage, or has visibly damaged cables or connectors. Stop using damaged equipment rather than repeatedly testing it.
Bring the iPhone, the charger, its cable, and its adapter to the service appointment if possible. Explain whether the failure is constant or intermittent, whether a wired connection works, the Battery screen message, and which known-good combinations you tested. Those details help distinguish an accessory fault from a phone-side charging or battery problem.
Source-backed guidance
The procedures and compatibility limits above follow Apple’s published support material: About iPhone charge speeds (published March 16, 2026), How to use your MagSafe Charger with iPhone (published March 31, 2026), How to charge your iPhone wirelessly, MagSafe chargers and battery packs for iPhone, and If your iPhone or iPod touch won’t charge. Apple’s wireless-charging guide states that an iPhone 8 or later is required for Qi charging, while its MagSafe guidance describes optimal magnetic alignment for faster, more efficient charging.
