If your iPhone changes the typing language while you are writing, first check the keyboards installed under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Remove a language you do not use, reorder the remaining keyboards, or touch and hold the Emoji/Switch Keyboard key while typing to choose the intended one. iPhone can also switch automatically when you use a supported multilingual keyboard; that behavior is a feature, not necessarily a fault.
Keep Language & Region separate from keyboard selection. Its preferred-language order controls how apps and websites display text, while the keyboard list controls which typing languages are available. The steps below let you keep the languages you need without allowing unwanted switches.
Why your iPhone keyboard changes language
Apple supports automatic language switching for some multilingual keyboard combinations. When the feature applies, you can type in two languages without manually changing keyboards, and the keyboard automatically switches between the two languages you use most often. Apple also notes that automatic switching is not available for every language combination.

First identify what is actually changing
The language indicator changes
If the Globe or Switch Keyboard control shows a different language, or the suggestions and autocorrection follow another language, the issue is keyboard selection or multilingual behavior. Use the keyboard-management steps in this guide.
The key arrangement changes
If the language remains correct but the arrangement of letters, numbers, symbols, or punctuation looks different, you may be seeing a layout change rather than a language change. The documented Apple controls covered here manage language keyboards; they do not establish the cause of every possible layout change. Confirm the active keyboard first before changing the iPhone’s entire language.
Check and clean up the installed keyboard list
The keyboard list is the most important place to start because it determines which languages can be selected while you type.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Keyboard.
- Tap Keyboards to see every installed keyboard and its order.
Remove a language you never use
In the Keyboards list, use the edit and remove controls for the language you do not want available, then save the change if iPhone presents a Done button. Removing an unwanted entry prevents it from being selected accidentally and leaves fewer languages for the automatic multilingual feature to consider.
Do not remove a keyboard if you still need to write in that language. Instead, keep it and use the ordering or manual-selection options below.
Reorder keyboards you want to keep
If you need several languages but one should be the normal choice, edit the Keyboards list and move your preferred keyboard higher in the order. Reordering keeps all of the languages installed while making your intended starting choice easier to find. It does not turn off automatic switching for a supported multilingual pair, so use a single keyboard or manual selection when you need to prevent changes while composing.
What adding or removing a keyboard changes
Adding a keyboard has two related effects: it makes another typing language available from the Emoji or Switch Keyboard menu, and it adds that language to the iPhone’s preferred-language order. These effects are connected, but they are not the same control. Removing a keyboard removes it from the typing switcher; it does not amount to changing the phone’s whole display language.

For example, suppose you add a Spanish keyboard so you can write occasional messages. Spanish can then appear in the keyboard switcher and in Language & Region as a preferred language. If a website later displays Spanish text, check the preferred-language order separately. If only the keyboard changed while you typed, manage the keyboard list instead.
Keep a short list when possible. A smaller list makes the intended language easier to identify and reduces the chance of choosing an unwanted entry when you tap or hold the keyboard-switching control. The right number of keyboards depends on the languages you actually use; there is no need to delete a language merely because it appears in the preferred-language list.
Select the intended keyboard without opening Settings
You can change keyboards from any text field, including Messages, Mail, Notes, and web forms.
- Tap a text field so the iPhone keyboard appears.
- Touch and hold the Emoji button or the Switch Keyboard key. The icon is usually a smiley face or a Globe, depending on the keyboard and iOS version.
- Keep holding until the keyboard list appears.
- Tap the language keyboard you want to use.
This is a direct selection, not a change to the phone’s system language. If the keyboard changes again later, note which language becomes active and whether you are using a supported bilingual keyboard; that observation determines the next step.

When automatic switching is useful—and when it is not
Automatic switching is useful if you write naturally in two supported languages and do not want to stop to press the Globe key. Apple describes the keyboard as following the two languages you use most often. Because the feature is selective by language, the behavior can differ from one pair to another.
It is a poor fit when you need every sentence to remain in one language—for example, when entering a product name, a code, a legal text, or a form field where autocorrection in another language is disruptive. In that case, remove the extra keyboard, choose one keyboard manually, or use a supported combined keyboard only if its automatic behavior matches your needs.
How to decide between separate and combined keyboards
Separate keyboards give you the clearest manual control. They are useful when you write mostly in one language, occasionally need another, or must keep autocorrection predictable for a particular task. A combined keyboard is more convenient when you move naturally between a supported pair in the same conversation and accept the possibility that iPhone will change languages automatically.

Do not assume that installing two separate keyboards automatically creates a bilingual keyboard. Apple may show an Add to [language] Keyboard choice for a supported pair, but the option is not universal. If it is absent, that language combination is not offered as one of Apple’s combined keyboards in your current setup. Keep the entries separate and choose them from the keyboard switcher.
Use a bilingual keyboard instead of separate entries
When adding another language, Apple may offer an Add to [language] Keyboard option. If that option appears for your language pair, it creates a bilingual keyboard rather than requiring you to switch between two separate entries.
- Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Choose the option to add a new keyboard.
- Select the language you want to add.
- If Apple presents Add to [language] Keyboard, review the displayed pair and choose it only if you want one multilingual keyboard.
- Return to a text field and test the new keyboard with the Emoji/Switch Keyboard control.
The option is not offered for every language combination. If you do not see it, keep the languages as separate keyboards and select between them manually, or remove the one you do not need.
Understand the iOS 18 three-language keyboard limitation
iOS 18 adds a three-language keyboard option for English and up to two supported Indian languages. It is not a general setting that combines any three languages. Apple specifies both the supported language combinations and the compatible iPhone generations in its iOS 18 documentation.
If you want this arrangement, check the keyboard-addition screen for the relevant multilingual option and verify that your iPhone model and iOS 18 installation meet Apple’s listed requirements. A missing option can mean that your language combination or device is outside those requirements; it does not mean the keyboard settings are malfunctioning.
A checklist before choosing the three-language option
- Confirm that English is one of the languages.
- Confirm that the other one or two languages are among Apple’s supported Indian languages.
- Check that the iPhone generation is included in Apple’s compatibility list.
- Check that the phone is running iOS 18.
- Look for the multilingual option while adding the keyboard; do not expect it to appear for an unsupported combination.
The three-language feature is intended to reduce switching among those supported languages. It does not make every installed language part of one keyboard, and it does not override the separate preferred-language order used by apps and websites.
Keep Language & Region separate from keyboard settings
The preferred-language list is managed at Settings > General > Language & Region. It affects the language order used by apps and websites when they display text. It is related to the keyboards you add, but it is not the control for choosing the active typing keyboard.

Apple notes that adding a keyboard for another language automatically adds that language to the preferred-language order. Therefore, seeing a new language in Language & Region after adding a keyboard can be expected.
When to change the preferred-language order
Change this list when apps or websites open in an unintended display language, or when you want a different fallback order for localized text. Reorder the preferred languages there and follow the on-screen confirmation.

When not to change it
Do not change the entire iPhone language merely because the typing keyboard switched. If the problem is the active keyboard, manage Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and the keyboard switcher instead. Changing the system language can alter menus and app text without removing the language keyboard that caused the original confusion.

Use a controlled test to confirm the cause
After changing the keyboard list, test in a simple text field rather than judging from one autocorrected word. First open the switcher and record which entries remain. Select one language, type a few ordinary sentences, and watch whether the indicator changes. Then repeat with the second language if you kept it. This separates an accidental selection from automatic multilingual behavior.
If you removed an unwanted keyboard, open the switcher again to make sure it no longer appears. If you reordered keyboards, verify that the preferred entry is where you expect it, then select it directly. If the typing language stays correct but an app interface changes language, stop adjusting keyboards and inspect Language & Region instead.
For a bilingual or three-language setup, test each language that you actually use. The presence of a combined option does not guarantee that every other language on the phone is included. A test also shows whether automatic switching is helping your normal writing or interrupting tasks that require a single language.

Prevent accidental keyboard changes
- Keep only necessary keyboards: Every additional keyboard adds another choice to the Globe-key menu. Removing languages you never use reduces accidental selections.
- Use the hold gesture deliberately: A quick tap may cycle keyboards, while touching and holding the Emoji or Switch Keyboard key displays the full list so you can choose the exact language.

If the unwanted keyboard has been removed and the correct keyboard is selected manually, the language-switching problem is addressed at its source. If automatic switching continues, it is likely the documented multilingual feature for a supported pair; choose a single keyboard or manual switching when consistency matters more than automatic convenience.
