When an iPad mini will not charge, start with the power source, the model-appropriate cable, and the charging port—not with a battery replacement. Connect it to a known-good wall adapter and cable, leave a deeply discharged iPad connected long enough to respond, then try a force restart. If the connection cuts in and out, the port may be damaged, or the iPad still shows no response after the checks below, stop manipulating the cable and arrange professional service.
Connector type depends on the generation. The iPad mini (6th generation) and iPad mini (A17 Pro) use USB-C; earlier minis use Lightning. Identify the model before buying a replacement cable.
First, confirm what “not charging” means
Connect the iPad mini to power and look for one of Apple’s charging indicators:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- A lightning-bolt symbol appears on the battery icon.
- A large battery image appears on the Lock screen.
An extremely low iPad can keep its screen blank for up to two minutes before showing the low-battery image. A very low battery may need up to 10 minutes on charge before the iPad can be used. Apple’s diagnostic guidance allows 20 to 30 minutes for some deep-discharge cases before the device turns on. These are different checkpoints, not a promise that every iPad will recover after a particular wait.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If nothing changes after the initial charging check, continue through the steps once. Do not repeatedly bend, twist, or force the cable in the port; an intermittent connection is a reason to seek service.
1. Use a known-good power source and the correct connector
Start with a wall outlet
- Plug a lamp or another device into the outlet to confirm that it supplies power.
- Connect the iPad mini to a compatible USB power adapter with a compatible charging cable.
- Leave the iPad connected while you watch for the charging symbol or Lock-screen battery image.
The simplest diagnostic setup is a working wall outlet, a cable known to charge another compatible device, and a power adapter known to work. If that combination fails, substitute the cable and adapter separately so you know which part changes the symptom.
Other supported power sources
Apple also permits charging from a USB 2 or later port on a computer, but the computer must be turned on and not asleep. A powered USB hub or dock, or a compatible powered Magic Keyboard, can also provide power. For troubleshooting, a wall adapter is preferable because it removes the computer’s sleep state and the hub’s power limits from the test.

Match the cable to the iPad mini generation
| iPad mini generation | Charging connector | What to buy or test |
|---|---|---|
| iPad mini (6th generation) | USB-C | A compatible USB-C charging cable and USB power adapter |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) | USB-C | A compatible USB-C charging cable and USB power adapter |
| Earlier iPad mini models | Lightning | A compatible Lightning cable and USB power adapter |
Do not assume that every iPad mini uses USB-C. If the iPad can start, check Settings > General > About for its model name. If it cannot start, use the original packaging, purchase record, or the model markings and Apple’s model-identification information before ordering a cable.
This matters when shopping for a replacement. A USB-C lead will not fit a Lightning port, and a Lightning lead is not a substitute for the USB-C connector on the sixth-generation or A17 Pro mini. Match both the plug and the adapter; changing only one part can leave the other failed component undiscovered.
2. Give a deeply discharged iPad enough time
What the screen may do
When the battery is nearly empty, the display may remain completely blank for up to two minutes after you connect power. The low-battery image can appear later, and Apple says a very low iPad may need up to 10 minutes before it is usable.
Use the longer diagnostic interval when necessary
For a deeper discharge, keep the iPad connected to a compatible wall adapter for 20 to 30 minutes. Apple’s diagnostic procedure uses that interval for cases in which the iPad needs more time to turn on. It is an opportunity for the battery-management system to detect incoming power, not a guaranteed recovery time.
Do not repeatedly disconnect and reconnect during this interval. Each interruption makes it harder to tell whether the iPad has received continuous power. Leave it on a stable surface, with the cable fully inserted but not under tension, and check periodically for the battery image or Apple logo.
If the iPad remains blank after the initial diagnostic interval with known-good equipment, move to cable substitution, port inspection, and a force restart. Waiting indefinitely is not a fix for a failed cable, damaged connector, or battery fault.
3. Replace the cable and adapter in the test
Test another compatible cable
Cables can fail internally while looking normal outside. Try a second cable that matches the iPad mini’s connector and is known to charge another device. Make sure both ends are fully seated without pushing at an angle.

Change only the cable first and keep the same outlet and adapter. If the charging icon appears, the original cable is the leading suspect. A cable that works intermittently, becomes unusually warm, or requires a particular angle should be retired rather than used as a permanent workaround.
Test another power adapter
Try a different compatible USB power adapter as well. Testing only a new cable leaves the original adapter as an unknown; testing only a new adapter leaves the original cable as an unknown. Change one component at a time and note whether the charging icon appears.
Use the simplest combination for diagnosis: a wall outlet, a known-good adapter, and a known-good cable. Once that combination works, you can test a computer, dock, hub, or keyboard separately. This prevents a sleeping computer or a low-power accessory from being mistaken for an iPad failure.
Interpret a slow-charger message
If the iPad reports that charging is slow, the power source may be delivering limited wattage. Apple notes that wired charging at 7.5 watts or less can take longer than expected. A slow charge is different from no charge: leave the iPad connected to a suitable adapter, avoid using it heavily while charging, and confirm the result with another adapter if available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not treat the 7.5-watt figure as a universal failure threshold. It describes a condition in which charging may take longer, not a required rating for every iPad mini. If the battery percentage still rises, the iPad is receiving power; if it never rises with known-good equipment, continue troubleshooting.
A replacement cable is a sensible next step only when it matches the model’s connector. It cannot repair a damaged port or replace a worn-out battery. Buying several cables without testing the adapter, outlet, temperature, and port can add cost without identifying the fault.
4. Check temperature before diagnosing hardware
Charging can pause when the iPad is at an extreme temperature. Move it to a moderate indoor environment and let it return to its normal operating range before testing again. Do not try to heat or cool the iPad rapidly, and do not charge it in direct sun, inside a hot vehicle, or in freezing conditions.
Remove thick insulation that traps heat, but do not place the iPad in a refrigerator, freezer, or against a heater. Let it return to normal naturally. Once the iPad is at a normal temperature, reconnect the known-good cable and adapter. If charging resumes, the pause was temperature-related; if it does not, continue with the port and restart checks.
5. Inspect and clean the port safely
Rule out liquid first
If liquid may be inside the charging port, do not connect a cable. Apple’s user guide gives this warning: WARNING: If you suspect there may be liquid in the charging port of iPad, don’t plug the charging cable into it.
Connecting power while liquid is present can worsen the damage. Arrange advice or service rather than probing the opening.
Consider recent spills, rain, condensation, or a damp bag as possible exposure. Do not assume a port is safe simply because it looks dry. Avoid testing with “just one quick” connection and do not use a hair dryer or other forced drying method inside the connector.
Remove only visible, dry debris
When there is no suspicion of liquid, use Apple’s limited cleaning procedure:

- Disconnect every cable.
- Turn the iPad mini off.
- Use a clean, dry, small, soft-bristled brush made of a nonmetallic material.
- Gently brush around the port without forcing anything into it.
Do not use metal picks, pins, liquids, cotton swabs that shed fibers, or compressed air. Do not scrape forcefully or attempt to widen the connector. If the plug still feels loose or the connection remains intermittent after gentle cleaning, stop cleaning and arrange service.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Debris can prevent a plug from seating fully, but a loose socket, bent contact, or repeated cut-in-and-out connection points to a hardware problem. Do not keep applying pressure to make a damaged connection work; that can enlarge the damage and complicate repair.
6. Force-restart an iPad mini without a Home button
Modern iPad mini models, including the sixth-generation and A17 Pro models, do not have a Home button. With the iPad connected to power:
- Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Quickly press and release the volume button farthest from the top button.
- Press and hold the top button until the iPad restarts.
Keep holding the top button through a blank screen until the Apple logo or another restart indication appears. This does not erase the iPad. If your older iPad mini has a Home button, use Apple’s separate Home-button restart procedure for that design rather than applying the sequence above.
A force restart is useful when the software is frozen and cannot update the charging display. It does not repair a failed adapter, port, or battery. If the iPad restarts but immediately stops charging, return to the known-good cable and adapter test and note whether the connection is steady.
Read the symptom before choosing the next step
| Symptom | Most useful next check | When to stop troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| No image immediately after connecting | Leave it on a known-good wall adapter for up to 10 minutes; a deep discharge may need 20–30 minutes. | No image after the diagnostic interval with a known-good cable and adapter. |
| Charges with one cable but not another | Replace the failed, model-compatible cable. | If a replacement cable also fails, test the adapter and port. |
| Charges only when the plug is held or angled | Disconnect it and inspect for debris without force. | Any continuing intermittent connection; arrange service. |
| Shows a slow-charger message | Try a suitable, higher-power compatible adapter and leave the iPad idle while charging. | It still does not gain charge with known-good equipment. |
| Charging pauses in very hot or cold conditions | Let the iPad return to a moderate temperature, then retry. | Charging does not resume at a normal temperature. |
| Possible liquid in the port | Do not plug in a cable; seek professional guidance. | Do not resume home testing until liquid exposure has been assessed. |
The table is a decision aid, not a component diagnosis. The same “won’t charge” symptom can come from a cable, adapter, power source, temperature pause, debris, connector damage, or battery and power circuitry. Only a technician’s inspection can distinguish those causes reliably.
When an iPad mini needs service
Arrange service when a known-good, model-compatible cable produces an intermittent connection, or when the iPad still shows no charging image after Apple’s initial charging check. Repeatedly forcing a cable can turn a connector problem into additional damage.
Service is also the safer choice after suspected liquid exposure, visible connector damage, a plug that will not stay seated, or a device that becomes unusually hot while connected. Stop testing if there is a smell, smoke, swelling, or other sign of physical damage.
Available service routes
Apple offers in-person service through a Genius Bar or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as mail-in service. Availability depends on your location, device model, coverage, and parts supply. An authorized provider may set its own fees.
Before booking, check whether the iPad is covered by warranty or another service plan and ask which service locations handle your model. Mail-in service adds shipping and turnaround considerations; an in-person provider can inspect the connector directly. Options differ by region.
Why there is no universal repair price
Apple requires inspection before providing a personalized estimate. The final cost and options can vary with the fault, warranty or other coverage, location, taxes, shipping, and parts availability. Do not treat a cable purchase as proof that the port or battery has failed, and do not rely on a fixed online repair fee without an inspection.

A replacement cable is usually the lowest-cost diagnostic step, but it is worthwhile only if the connector matches the iPad mini generation and the adapter is known good. If the new cable produces the same symptom, further purchases are unlikely to solve a damaged port or battery. Ask for an estimate before authorizing paid work.
What the service technician may investigate
For the iPad mini (A17 Pro), Apple’s repair documentation includes charging and power troubleshooting and a USB-C connector repair procedure. Apple’s diagnostic guidance identifies connector replacement for some wired-charging issues and battery replacement for certain battery-charging or no-power issues in supported newer models. Those are technician repair paths, not a way to identify the failed component from the “won’t charge” symptom alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Apple’s repair information for the A17 Pro should not be extended automatically to an unspecified earlier mini. Generation, connector design, parts availability, and coverage all affect the available repair. Battery work is not a casual do-it-yourself repair. Apple states: Only technicians with the knowledge, experience, and tools required to repair electronic devices should replace a battery.
Do not open the iPad or attempt a battery replacement with household tools.
Before handing the iPad in
- If the iPad still turns on, back up important data before service.
- Record which cable and adapter combinations you tested and whether the connection was steady or intermittent.
- Tell the technician about liquid exposure, a drop, unusual heat, or a port that feels loose.
- Check warranty or other coverage before approving paid work.
- Remove accessories that are not part of the charging problem, but keep the failed cable available if it helps demonstrate the symptom.
- Write down when the problem began and whether the battery percentage ever increased. That helps separate a slow charge from a complete failure.
A safe decision path
- Identify whether the iPad mini uses USB-C or Lightning.
- Use a working outlet, compatible cable, and compatible adapter.
- Watch for the charging indicator and allow up to 10 minutes, or 20–30 minutes for a deep-discharge diagnostic check.
- Substitute the cable and adapter one at a time.
- Let an overheated or very cold iPad return to a moderate temperature.
- If no liquid is suspected, power off and gently brush away dry debris with a clean, soft, nonmetallic brush.
- Force-restart a model without a Home button.
- Stop and arrange service for persistent no-charge behavior, an intermittent connection, suspected liquid, or a physically loose or damaged port.
Frequently asked questions
How long should I leave a completely dead iPad mini plugged in?
Allow up to two minutes for the first low-battery image, up to 10 minutes before a very low iPad may be usable, and 20 to 30 minutes for Apple’s deeper-discharge diagnostic interval. These are checkpoints, not a guarantee. If there is still no image with known-good equipment after that interval, arrange service.
Can I charge an iPad mini from a computer?
Yes. Apple supports a USB 2 or later computer port when the computer is turned on and not asleep. A wall adapter is a better first test because it avoids sleep settings and uncertain computer-port output. A powered hub, dock, or compatible powered Magic Keyboard may also provide power.
How do I know whether my mini needs USB-C or Lightning?
The sixth-generation and A17 Pro iPad mini use USB-C. Earlier mini models use Lightning. Check Settings > General > About if the iPad starts, or use its packaging, purchase record, model markings, and Apple’s model-identification information if it does not.
Why does my iPad mini charge only when I hold the cable at an angle?
An angled or cut-in-and-out connection can indicate debris, a worn cable, or connector damage. Try one gentle inspection with the iPad powered off and a dry, nonmetallic soft brush if no liquid is suspected. Do not keep forcing the plug; persistent intermittence warrants service.
Is a slow-charger message the same as a failed battery?
No. Apple says wired charging at 7.5 watts or less may take longer than expected. Try a known-good compatible adapter and cable, leave the iPad idle, and watch whether the battery percentage rises. A slow charge alone does not identify a failed battery.
Should I clean the port with a pin or compressed air?
No. Apple’s limited procedure calls for turning the iPad off, disconnecting cables, and gently using a clean, dry, small, nonmetallic soft-bristled brush. Do not use metal tools, liquids, compressed air, or forceful scraping.
What if the iPad mini was exposed to water?
Do not plug a cable into a port that may contain liquid. Apple specifically warns against connecting the charging cable in that situation. Seek professional guidance and do not resume home charging tests until the exposure has been assessed.
Can I replace the iPad mini battery myself?
Apple says battery replacement should be performed only by technicians with the required knowledge, experience, and tools. The no-charge symptom alone does not prove that the battery is the failed component. Use Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for evaluation.
