An Instagram data export can take weeks to prepare, an available download can expire before you retrieve it, or the archive can appear to be missing messages, followers, posts, or media. The fix depends on the state shown in Accounts Center: wait and verify a request that is still processing, create a new request for an expired download, and check account, date-range, category, file-part, and storage settings before treating an archive as incomplete.
The current controls are in Meta Accounts Center rather than the old standalone Download Your Information page. The labels differ slightly by app version and rollout, but the workflow is the same on Instagram for iPhone and Android.
What changed: Instagram exports now live in Accounts Center
Meta moved Instagram’s Download Your Information and Access Your Information controls into Accounts Center. In an October 17, 2023 Meta Newsroom announcement, Meta Director of Product Management Robert d’Apice said: “Download Your Information and Access Your Information are now in Accounts Center, and you can now download information from both your Facebook and Instagram accounts at the same time.”

Start a new export from the current Instagram controls
Use these steps when you need a fresh archive, including after an old link has expired.
- Open your Instagram profile. Tap the profile picture, then open the menu (the three-line button). Depending on the app version, choose Settings and activity or a similarly named settings entry.
- Open Accounts Center. The control is usually near the top of the settings screen. If you use Facebook and Instagram together, several profiles may be listed.
- Choose Your information and permissions. This section contains the export and access controls.
- Open Export your information or Download your information. Meta is testing and rolling out labels, so either wording can be correct.
- Select the Instagram profile. Do not assume the highlighted account is the one you need. Confirm the username before continuing.
- Choose the scope. You can request all available information or select individual categories, such as messages, followers and following, posts, comments, or account activity. Set the date range explicitly.
- Choose a file format. Select HTML for pages that are easy to read in a browser, or JSON for structured files that are easier to process with software.
- Set media quality and submit. Higher quality increases the size of the archive. Confirm the request and note the email address shown on the confirmation screen.
After submission, use the same Accounts Center area to open Available downloads. You can also monitor the email address associated with the request and Instagram notifications. The wording and screen order can change with an app update, but the distinctive path is Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Export/Download your information.
When an export is still preparing or delayed
A status such as “preparing” means Instagram is processing the request; it does not by itself indicate a failed request. Meta’s current Help Center guidance says it may take up to 30 days for an export link to arrive. That is a maximum stated processing window, not an average or a promise that every request will finish within a particular number of hours.

Check every delivery location before requesting again
- Reopen Accounts Center and inspect Available downloads. A completed archive can appear there even if the email was filtered.
- Check the exact email address displayed when you submitted the request. Look in spam, junk, promotions, quarantine, and any mail rule that could move an automated message.
- Review Instagram notifications and the in-app account that created the request.
- Make sure you are signed in to the same Instagram profile that submitted the export. A different profile can show a different download list.
- Do not submit repeated requests merely because the status remains “preparing.” Multiple large jobs can make it harder to identify the correct archive and can consume storage on your device when they eventually arrive.
Why some requests take longer in practice
Instagram does not publish an official average completion time. An all-time export containing high-quality photos and videos is substantially larger than a narrow request for a few categories and a short date range, so it generally requires more processing and transfer time. Treat that as a size and scope trade-off, not as a guaranteed schedule.
Choose the smallest scope that answers your question
If you only need a particular conversation or a recent period, a focused request reduces the amount of data to assemble and download. If you need a historical record for an account, choose all information and an all-time range, accepting that the archive will be larger and may take longer. Neither choice guarantees a completion time.

When the Instagram download link has expired
Meta’s guidance says that, after an export is ready, you have 4 days to export your information. The archive is privacy-sensitive, so Instagram may require an active login and a password confirmation before it will deliver the files.
There is no refresh trick for an expired archive
If the email link no longer works or the item has disappeared from Available downloads, refreshing the old URL cannot revive it. Return to the Export your information control and submit a new request using the correct profile, categories, date range, format, and media quality. When the new archive appears, download it promptly rather than leaving it in the list.

Use the replacement link safely
- Sign in to the Instagram account that created the export.
- Open the new notification or the Available downloads entry while you are logged in.
- Complete any password confirmation shown by Instagram.
- Download every file or ZIP part before closing the page.
- Store the files in a private location and do not forward the email, link, or extracted archive. The export can contain messages, contact information, account activity, and media.
Diagnose an archive that seems incomplete
Before asking Instagram for help, distinguish data that was never requested from data that was requested but failed to download. Work through these checks in order.
1. Verify the Instagram profile
Accounts Center can contain multiple Instagram profiles, especially when you manage personal and professional accounts together. Open the export details and compare the selected username with the account whose messages, followers, or posts you expected. A perfectly valid archive for the wrong profile will look incomplete even though nothing is missing from that export.
2. Recheck the date range
A custom range excludes everything outside its start and end dates. For example, a request limited to the current year will not contain older direct messages or activity. If the missing item predates the selected range, create a new request with an all-time range or dates that cover the period in question.

3. Recheck category selections
A customized export only contains the categories you selected. Messages, followers and following, posts, comments, account information, and media can be separate choices. Open the request settings or confirmation details and compare them with the information you expected. If a category was not selected, its absence is intentional rather than a damaged archive.

Large exports can be split into multiple downloadable parts. Missing one part can make folders, message attachments, or media appear absent. Download every item shown for the request and extract all parts into one working folder. Keep the original ZIP files until you have verified the combined folder; do not judge completeness from the first part alone.
5. Check for a partial download
High-quality media can create a very large archive. Confirm that the download finished without an interrupted connection, that the ZIP file size is not suspiciously small, and that the device has enough free storage for both the compressed archive and the extracted copy. A browser that ran out of space or lost its connection can leave a truncated ZIP that opens but lacks files.
6. Inspect the folder structure, not just the top level
HTML exports may organize information into linked pages and subfolders. JSON exports may place records in separate files by category, date, or conversation. Use the archive’s search function and inspect nested folders before concluding that a category is missing. In a multipart export, perform this inspection only after all parts have been extracted together.
7. Consider information that is no longer available
Deleted content, information removed under Instagram’s retention rules, and data that was never stored in a recoverable form may not be restorable through an export. If the same category is absent from a fresh all-time request after you have verified the profile, range, selections, and file parts, document the exact missing path and escalate it rather than repeatedly downloading the same archive.

Choose HTML or JSON for the job
The format changes how you read the export; it does not expand the categories or date range you requested.

If a person needs to read conversations or account history manually, HTML is usually the less confusing choice. If the goal is analysis, migration, or a repeatable search, JSON is more useful. For either format, profile, category, date-range, and multipart checks still apply.
How to combine a multipart export correctly
- Create a new, empty folder with enough free space for all downloaded ZIP files plus the extracted data.
- Download every part listed under the same Available downloads request. Do not mix parts from different requests.
- Confirm that each file finished downloading before extraction. A failed part can have a generic filename but an unusually small size.
- Extract the parts into one working folder, following the extractor’s instructions if it asks for the first volume of a split archive.
- Preserve the folder hierarchy created by Instagram. Moving individual JSON files or HTML pages can break relative links.
- Open the top-level index or category folders and search across the complete extracted folder.
- Keep the untouched ZIP files in a private backup until you have confirmed that the combined export contains what you need.
If extraction reports a checksum, volume, or unexpected-end error, download the affected part again before interpreting missing records as an Instagram data problem.

Instagram ties an export to the account that requested it. Open the download while logged in to that same account and complete a password prompt when requested. If you switch profiles in Accounts Center, the link may not authorize the archive you intended to retrieve.
Never forward an export email or paste its link into a public ticket or chat. Anyone who obtains a valid link may be able to access personal data until the link expires. Store downloaded files with the same care you would use for a password recovery document.

If you cannot access the account that created the request, use Instagram’s Help Center contact route to request a copy or resolve the access problem. That route does not guarantee that the archive will be supplied or provide a fixed turnaround, so recover account access first when possible.
A state-based troubleshooting path

What to record before contacting Instagram
Support can investigate more effectively when the problem is reproducible. Write down:
- The exact Instagram username or profile selected in Accounts Center.
- The date and approximate time you submitted the request.
- The requested format, date range, categories, and media-quality setting.
- Whether the request was single-part or multipart and which part appears faulty.
- The exact folder, page, conversation, or category that is missing.
- Any error text shown during download, extraction, login, or password confirmation.
- Whether the same item is absent from a new all-time request.
Do not send passwords or an unrestricted copy of the archive to support. Share only the details needed to identify the request, and follow Instagram’s secure contact instructions.

- Choose the correct Instagram profile before selecting categories.
- Use a date range that matches the question you are trying to answer; use all time when older records matter.
- Select HTML for straightforward reading and JSON when you need structured processing.
- Reserve enough device storage for the ZIP files and their extracted contents, especially with high-quality media.
- Download every available part as soon as the archive is ready.
- Keep the original ZIP files and a private backup of the extracted folder.
- Do not share links or archives that contain personal information.
A delayed request calls for verification and patience, an expired request calls for a new export, and an incomplete archive calls for scope and file-integrity checks before escalation. Following that order prevents a missing selection or ZIP part from being mistaken for lost Instagram data.
