An .htaccess-related 500 Internal Server Error usually comes from a malformed directive, invalid rewrite syntax, or a directive Apache is not permitted to use in that directory. Isolate the file with a reversible backup and rename, read the Apache error log for the exact directive and line, then correct the rule or have the host change the relevant Apache settings. WordPress can recreate its standard rules after the bad file is removed.
What an .htaccess 500 error means
HTTP status 500 means the server could not complete the request because of an internal configuration or processing failure. When the failure begins immediately after editing .htaccess, the file is a prime suspect, but the response alone does not identify the cause. Apache may reject a directive that is misspelled, reject a valid directive written with invalid syntax, refuse a directive that the directory is not allowed to override, or fail to process rewrite rules because the required module or context is unavailable.

The same symptom can affect every URL in the site, only a subdirectory, or only WordPress routes. That scope matters: a site-wide failure points toward the file or directory configuration, while a route-specific failure may be a rule conflict. Do not keep adding rules while the cause is unknown. First establish whether the file is involved and capture the server’s own diagnostic message.
Use this reversible recovery workflow
- Preserve the current file. Download or copy the existing
.htaccessbefore changing it. Keep the copy outside the web editor or give it a distinct name so it cannot be confused with the active file. - Rename the active file temporarily. A common isolation name is
.htaccess_old. Renaming, rather than deleting, lets you restore the exact previous state. WordPress documents this as a diagnostic procedure. - Request the site again. Test the home page and the URL that previously returned 500. If the site loads after the rename, the file is implicated. If the same 500 remains, continue investigating the directory or virtual-host configuration instead of rewriting the file blindly.
- Open the Apache
httpderror log. Capture the complete entry, including the file path, directive name, line number, and wording of the error. Apache’s guidance is direct: "If, on the other hand, you are getting server errors when trying to access documents, check your httpd error log." - Classify the message before editing. A message saying a directive is not allowed here indicates an override-policy problem. A bad-flag-delimiter, invalid-directive, or syntax message indicates a malformed line. Rewrite-related messages require a module and context check.
- Make one targeted change. Correct only the line identified by the log, or remove the newly added rule and test again. Changing several rules at once makes it impossible to know which edit fixed or caused the failure.
- Retest the affected scope. Check the original failing URL, the home page, a known static file, and a representative WordPress permalink if applicable. A file can stop producing a 500 while still routing requests incorrectly.
- Regenerate WordPress rules when appropriate. Once the bad file is removed or corrected, use the WordPress permalink screen to write a clean standard block. Keep the preserved copy until normal requests have been verified.
Read the error log instead of guessing
The error log is the fastest route from a generic 500 page to a specific fix. Control panels may expose an Apache log viewer; on managed or shared hosting, the provider may be the only party able to read the server log. Ask for the exact entry generated at the time of a test request rather than a general statement that the site returned 500.

Directive rejected by override policy
The wording not allowed here means Apache recognized the directive but the directory context does not permit it in .htaccess. This is not fixed by changing punctuation. The directory’s AllowOverride and AllowOverrideList settings determine which directives and override categories can be used. The setting may be inherited from a parent directory or virtual-host configuration, so the file owner often cannot correct it without host access.
Invalid directive or malformed syntax
A misspelled directive, an unsupported option, a missing argument, or incorrect flag delimiters can stop Apache while it parses the file. A directive can be valid in Apache generally and still produce a 500 when its syntax is invalid. Use the directive’s Apache documentation to verify spelling, argument order, delimiters, and whether the directive is valid in the current directory context.

Rewrite-specific error
Rewrite rules depend on the appropriate Apache module and on permission to use rewrite directives in that directory. Check that mod_rewrite is loaded and that RewriteEngine, RewriteBase, RewriteCond, and RewriteRule are valid for the current context. The log may identify the first line Apache cannot parse; fix that line before evaluating later rules.
Fix an AllowOverride or AllowOverrideList problem
When the log says a directive is not allowed here, inspect the Apache configuration for the directory containing the file. AllowOverride controls which classes of directives can be placed in .htaccess, while AllowOverrideList can restrict the individual directives that are permitted. A rule copied from another server may therefore fail on a host with a stricter policy even when the rule itself is correctly written.

- Identify the directory named in the log and the
.htaccessfile Apache is reading. - Find the applicable virtual-host or directory configuration, including inherited settings.
- Confirm that the directive’s override category is enabled and, where used, that the directive is listed in
AllowOverrideList. - Reload or apply the server configuration according to the host’s procedure, then test the request again.
If you have file access but no Apache configuration access, do not try to work around the restriction by adding more directives. Remove or rename the file to restore service and ask the host to permit the required directive or provide an equivalent server-level configuration.
Correct malformed rewrite rules and flags
Rewrite syntax is especially sensitive because a small punctuation error can prevent Apache from parsing the entire file. Check each directive against the Apache documentation and compare the failing line with a known-good version for the same directory context. Pay particular attention to flag brackets, separators, regular-expression punctuation, and the number and order of arguments.

Verify that mod_rewrite is enabled. Then verify that the file is being interpreted in the context expected by the rule. A rule written for a virtual-host configuration may not work unchanged in a per-directory .htaccess file. RewriteBase and the pattern used by RewriteRule must match the current directory context; a syntactically correct rule can still be wrong for the location in which it runs.
Check the rule sequence
Read conditions and rules as a group. A RewriteCond applies to the following RewriteRule, and flags such as [L] affect how Apache proceeds after a match. Preserve the order of working rules when removing a newly added rule, and test after each change. If the log identifies an invalid flag delimiter or directive, fix that parse error before judging the rule’s routing behavior.

Separate parsing failures from routing failures
If renaming the file removes the 500, restore a minimal known-good file and add custom rules one at a time. A parsing failure prevents Apache from serving requests at all. A routing failure usually leaves the server running but sends a request to the wrong target, creates a redirect loop, or returns a different status. The error log and response behavior together tell you which class you are dealing with.

For a standard WordPress installation in the document root, restore this standard block after removing the malformed rules:

If the installation is in a different directory or has deliberate custom routing, the generated values may differ; use the rules WordPress writes for that installation rather than forcing the root-site block into another layout.
Regenerate through the dashboard
- Sign in to WordPress after the file has been renamed or repaired.
- Open Settings > Permalinks.
- Review the selected permalink structure and click Save Changes, even if you do not change the selection.
- Test the home page, an existing post, a page, and the original failing URL.
Saving the permalink settings causes WordPress to regenerate its standard rewrite rules. If the dashboard is unavailable, keep the file renamed while you repair the server-side cause, then restore a known-good WordPress block through the file manager, FTP, or another approved access method before returning to the permalink screen.

If a clean .htaccess does not solve the problem
A successful isolation test does not prove that every later failure is caused by the same line. After restoring a clean file, a WordPress-level conflict can still produce errors on particular requests. Temporarily deactivate plugins and switch to a default theme to determine whether application code is adding or expecting a rule that is no longer present. Perform these tests one change at a time and record which component was changed.
If the 500 remains when .htaccess is renamed, focus on the server and application layers outside that file. The host should inspect the virtual-host and directory configuration, enabled modules, filesystem permissions, and the entries generated at the time of the request. Do not repeatedly regenerate WordPress rules when the isolation test has already shown that Apache is failing elsewhere.

What to give your hosting provider
Escalation is faster when the host receives a reproducible test rather than only a screenshot of the 500 page. Include the domain or affected directory, the URL tested, the time in UTC or the host’s timezone, whether renaming .htaccess changed the response, and the complete error-log message if you can access it. Mention the last known-good change and attach the preserved copy without replacing it on the server.
Ask the provider to check the virtual-host and directory configuration, the effective AllowOverride and AllowOverrideList values, whether mod_rewrite is enabled, filesystem permissions, and recent Apache log entries. If a directive is blocked, ask whether the host can permit it or supply the equivalent server-level rule. If the provider cannot permit arbitrary overrides, keep only rules supported by that hosting policy.

Prevent the next .htaccess outage
- Keep a dated copy of every working
.htaccessbefore editing. - Make one logical change at a time and test immediately.
- Record the URL and timestamp for each test so the matching log entry is easy to find.
- Use Apache’s documentation to verify directive context, arguments, and flag syntax before deploying a copied rule.
- Confirm that the required module and override permissions exist on the target host rather than assuming another server’s configuration applies.
- For WordPress, preserve the standard generated block and place custom rules outside it so a permalink save can recreate the managed section.
- Keep a reversible rollback path: rename or restore the previous file instead of deleting the only known-good copy.
Common situations and the correct response
The site broke immediately after adding one rule
Rename the file and retest first. If service returns, compare the new line with the Apache directive documentation and the error-log message. Restore the previous working file, then reintroduce the rule only after its syntax, module requirement, and directory context are confirmed.
Saving WordPress permalinks caused the 500
Use the backup-and-rename procedure, confirm the log message, and restore the standard WordPress block once the file is parseable. Save Settings > Permalinks again to regenerate the rules. If the 500 continues with the file removed, investigate the host configuration rather than repeatedly saving permalinks.
A custom rule works on one host but fails on another
Compare the two environments’ enabled modules and override policies. The second host may disallow the directive through AllowOverride or AllowOverrideList, or it may not have the required rewrite module enabled. The log will distinguish a permission failure from a syntax failure; give that message to the host when requesting a configuration change.
