Start by identifying exactly what your HP laptop is doing: no power, power with a blank screen, a startup error, a charging problem, Wi-Fi trouble, or a keyboard, touchpad, display, or audio fault. The right fix depends on that symptom and your laptop’s model; before changing BIOS settings, installing drivers, or arranging a repair, find the product name or number and use HP’s support instructions for that specific device.
First, identify the type of problem
Notice what happens when you press the power button and what still works. A laptop with no lights or sounds is a different case from one whose power light or fan is on but whose screen is black. Likewise, a blinking light or startup beep may be an error signal rather than a general power problem.
- No power: no apparent lights, sounds, or other signs of startup.
- Blank screen: the laptop appears to have power, but the display shows no image.
- Startup error: a message, blinking-light pattern, or beep appears during startup.
- Charging or battery trouble: the battery will not charge or does not hold charge.
- Wi-Fi trouble: wireless networking is unavailable or unreliable.
- Peripheral or component trouble: the keyboard, touchpad, display, touchscreen, or audio is not working properly.
HP’s support site organizes help by product and symptom, including boot, audio, and display issues. Instructions and available diagnostic tools can vary by product, Windows version, and region, so do not assume a procedure for one HP model applies to another.
If the laptop will not turn on
Try basic external checks before assuming the laptop needs repair. HP recommends a hard or power reset as an initial step for a computer that will not power on.

- Check that the wall outlet works and that the correct AC adapter is firmly connected to both the outlet and laptop.
- Turn the laptop off if it is responding, then disconnect the AC adapter and nonessential peripherals such as USB devices.
- With the adapter disconnected, hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the adapter and try turning on the laptop. Follow HP’s instructions for your specific model if they differ.
If the computer remains off after these checks with a working outlet and the correct adapter, HP says it may need repair. Do not open the laptop as a default troubleshooting step.
If the laptop has power but the screen is blank
Look for signs that the laptop is running, such as power indicators or fan sounds. If those are present while the LCD shows no image, treat it as a blank-screen problem rather than a no-power fault. HP’s initial blank-screen procedure includes a hard reset and disconnecting nonessential peripherals; further steps depend on the model and situation.

Important: A blank screen may occur while Windows or BIOS is updating. HP Support warns: “Do not turn off or unplug the computer during this update process.” If you know an update is underway, leave the laptop connected to power and do not interrupt it.
If you see blinking lights, beeps, or a startup message
Record the exact message or the color and sequence of any blinking lights or beeps. Then look up that pattern in HP’s support information for your product. HP notes that long and short blink patterns can indicate different error categories, and beep codes are not available on every model. A code’s meaning is not universal across all HP laptops.

Some documented patterns point to BIOS or other hardware problems. If the model-specific recovery steps do not resolve the issue, contact HP Support with the product details and the pattern you recorded.
If the battery will not charge or hold charge
Begin with HP’s battery troubleshooting workflow, which starts with a hard reset and a battery test. Depending on the laptop and what is installed, the test may be available through HP Battery Check or HP PC Hardware Diagnostics. These are diagnostic options, not tools guaranteed to be preinstalled on every device.

- If the test reports a failure, save the diagnostic code; HP can use it to direct you to repair options.
- If you need a replacement adapter, identify the laptop’s product number first. HP says adapters are designed for specific notebook models, so match the replacement to the exact model and its electrical requirements rather than assuming any HP-labeled adapter will work.
If Wi-Fi is not working
- Check the laptop’s wireless switch or keyboard control and make sure the wireless radio is on.
- Run network diagnostics using HP Support Assistant or the Windows Network and Internet Troubleshooter, if available on your device.
- Restart the router or modem, then check for relevant updates and review the wireless-adapter configuration.
- If the connection is weak, try improving signal conditions by moving closer to the router or reducing obstacles between it and the laptop.
On a business laptop, ask your organization’s IT department before changing network or security settings.

Use HP’s dedicated support route for the component that is failing. HP separates keyboard, mouse, and touchpad issues from display, touchscreen, and audio problems; a general fix for one category may not apply to another. Identify the product before using a driver or other model-dependent instruction, and follow the guide for that device and your Windows version.
When to seek HP support or repair
Escalate rather than continuing with trial-and-error if a hardware test fails, a startup code persists after the documented recovery steps, the laptop still has no power after basic checks, or the next proposed repair requires invasive work. HP provides warranty-check, repair, and approved-service routes; eligibility and parts availability depend on the warranty and region.
Have the product name or number ready when contacting HP. Verify coverage and repair options with HP using your device details, and use the model-specific support article for any BIOS, driver, or hardware procedure.
