If your HP inkjet printer will not connect to Wi-Fi, first make sure your phone or computer is on the intended home network, then restore the printer’s Wi-Fi setup mode and add it again in the HP app. If the app still cannot find the printer, check discovery settings, restart the network devices, and use the printer’s Wireless Network Test report to look for a weak signal. Exact button steps vary by model.
Start with the network your phone or computer is using
For ordinary home Wi-Fi printing, the printer and the phone or computer used for setup need access to the same local network. Confirm that the client device is connected to the home network you want the printer to use and that its internet connection works. If the phone or computer is on a different network, the HP app may not find the printer during setup.
- Use the regular home network rather than a guest or public network. Guest networks may isolate devices from one another, and public networks may require a login or confirmation that prevents printer setup.
- Do not select the printer’s
DIRECT-xx-HPWi-Fi Direct signal as a substitute for connecting the printer to the home Wi-Fi network. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate, direct connection option. - If you are using a VPN on the phone or computer, disconnect it while troubleshooting setup. HP identifies VPN use as a possible obstacle to printer discovery.
If the router’s network name or password changed, the printer may still be trying to use the old details. In that case, restore Wi-Fi setup mode and connect the printer again using the current network information.
Distinguish a local network from Wi-Fi Direct
Local Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct solve different problems. With local Wi-Fi, the printer joins the home network so a phone or computer on that network can reach it. Wi-Fi Direct instead provides a direct connection to the printer; its DIRECT-xx-HP name is not the home router’s network name. Choosing that signal does not configure the printer to join your regular home Wi-Fi.

If setup is taking place on a guest network, check whether that network permits devices to see one another. A guest network can provide internet access while still preventing discovery between a phone and printer. Public Wi-Fi may also require a login or confirmation step that interferes with setup. If shared-network access is unavailable or those restrictions are the obstacle, Wi-Fi Direct may be an alternative, depending on the situation and printer model. It is not a remedy for weak signal on the home network, and it should not be confused with reconnecting the printer to that network.
Restore Wi-Fi setup mode and add the printer again
Wi-Fi setup mode puts the printer in a state where it can accept a new wireless connection. The menu path depends on the printer’s control panel, so do not assume that button instructions for another HP model will apply.
On a model with a touchscreen
- On the printer, open Wireless or Setup.
- Open Network Setup or Settings, then choose Restore Network Settings. The wording and menu arrangement can differ by model.
- Return to the HP app or the setup software on your phone or computer and follow its guided steps to add the printer to the intended Wi-Fi network.
On a model without a touchscreen
Use the Wi-Fi setup-mode button sequence specified for your exact printer model. HP’s instructions vary across models; if the controls on your printer do not match the touchscreen path above, look up the wireless setup instructions for that model rather than trying a sequence intended for a different printer.
After setup mode is restored, complete the guided setup promptly. HP Support says to follow the HP app’s steps within two hours of restoring Wi-Fi setup mode. If that period passes before you finish, restore setup mode again and retry.
Complete the app setup while the printer is ready
Restoring network settings prepares the printer to accept a connection; it does not by itself finish joining the home network. The app or setup software still needs to guide you through adding the printer and selecting the intended Wi-Fi network. Keep the phone or computer on that network while following the prompts, and make sure the printer is still in setup mode when the app searches for it.
HP Support’s guidance is explicit about the time window: “Within two hours of restoring Wi-Fi setup mode, follow the guided steps in the HP app to add the printer and set up the wireless connection.” If you have been troubleshooting for longer than that, do not assume the printer is still discoverable in setup mode. Restore the mode again using the instructions for your model, then return to the app and continue.
If the HP app cannot find the printer
Printer discovery involves more than the printer’s Wi-Fi connection. Check the phone or computer’s connection and permissions before repeating the printer setup.

- Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone or computer, and that it is on the same home network you intend to use for the printer.
- Enable Bluetooth on the device during setup. HP calls it out as a setup prerequisite for discovery.
- On a mobile device, check that the HP app has the location permissions it requests for setup.
- Disconnect from a VPN while trying to add the printer.
- Confirm that the printer is still in Wi-Fi setup mode. If you restored setup mode more than two hours ago, restore it again before continuing.
Then reopen the HP app and follow its guided printer-adding steps. If the printer appears connected to Wi-Fi but is reported as unavailable or offline, that is a different symptom from a printer that cannot be found during setup. Use HP’s printer-not-found or offline guidance for that case instead of repeatedly resetting the wireless connection.
Work through discovery checks in order
When the app says it cannot find a printer, start with the device that is running the app: is Wi-Fi enabled, is it connected to the intended local network, and does that network have working internet? Then check Bluetooth, mobile location permissions if applicable, and VPN status. These are separate setup conditions; changing the printer’s network settings repeatedly will not compensate for a disabled device connection or a discovery restriction.
Next confirm the printer is ready to be added. A printer that has left Wi-Fi setup mode may not appear as a new device, even if the phone and app are configured correctly. Restore setup mode again if needed and promptly repeat the app’s guided process. If the app finds the printer but it is labelled unavailable or offline, stop treating that as a discovery failure. Follow HP’s guidance for an offline or unavailable printer, since the printer-not-found symptom and the offline symptom are not the same point in the process.
Restart the printer and network devices
If the network and discovery checks are correct but setup still fails, restart the connection path and try again.
- Restart the printer.
- Restart the router.
- Restart the phone or computer you are using for setup.
- Restore the printer’s Wi-Fi setup mode if needed, then retry adding it in the HP app.
Restarting can clear a temporary connection or discovery problem, but it will not correct a wrong Wi-Fi password, guest-network isolation, or missing app permissions. If setup fails again, move on to checking signal strength and the printer’s connection report.
Keep the next attempt focused: verify that the client device is back on the intended network, confirm that the printer is in setup mode, and then use the app’s guided flow. A restart is a sensible way to clear a temporary problem in the path between the printer, router, and setup device, but it does not replace correcting the network choice or setup conditions. If the same issue remains after restarting, use the test report rather than repeating restarts without checking what the printer reports.
Check the Wireless Network Test report and signal
Print the printer’s Wireless Network Test report and review the connection information and signal strength. A weak signal can make the wireless connection unreliable or prevent setup from completing.

- Move the printer closer to the router if the report indicates weak signal strength.
- Reduce distance and obstacles between the printer and router where practical; placement can affect wireless communication.
- If the printer must stay farther from the router and weak coverage is the identified issue, a Wi-Fi range extender may improve signal in that area.
A range extender addresses coverage, not setup or access problems. It will not fix incorrect network credentials, a printer that is not in setup mode, VPN or app-discovery issues, or restrictions that isolate devices on a guest network. Check the report and placement before treating an extender as the solution.

Use the report to choose the next step
The Wireless Network Test report is useful because it gives you connection information and a signal-strength check instead of leaving you to guess whether the printer is simply too far from the router. If the signal appears weak, consider the physical path between the devices: moving the printer or router closer, or reducing obstacles, may improve wireless communication. Retest after changing placement if you need to see whether coverage was the issue.
A range extender is worth considering only when the test and the printer’s location point to weak coverage farther from the router. It is not a general-purpose printer setup fix. For example, it cannot put the printer into setup mode, supply the correct network credentials, enable Bluetooth or location permissions on a phone, remove a VPN, or change guest-network isolation. Address those separate conditions directly rather than buying equipment to solve a problem that is not signal strength.
Reconnect after a router or Wi-Fi change
If you replaced the router, changed the Wi-Fi name or password, or otherwise changed wireless settings, reconnect the printer using the new network details. Restore the printer’s Wi-Fi setup mode, then use the HP app or the connection option listed for your exact printer model. The printer may not automatically adopt the updated settings.
When reconnecting, make sure the phone or computer used for setup is on the intended local network. If the new network is a guest network with device isolation or a login requirement, ordinary network printing and discovery may not work as expected.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Think of a router or Wi-Fi change as a reason to run setup again, not as a reason to assume that a printer fault has occurred. Restore network setup mode so the printer can accept the new connection, then add it using the updated network details. If the new router uses a guest or public network, first consider whether the network permits the printer and setup device to see one another; simply entering the new details may not overcome isolation or a required sign-in.
Choose the connection method that fits the problem
| Connection option | Best fit | What it does not solve |
|---|---|---|
| Local Wi-Fi | Printing through the home network when the printer and client device can access that network. | It does not overcome guest-network isolation or a weak signal by itself. |
| Wi-Fi Direct | A direct printer connection when shared-network access is unavailable or guest-network restrictions interfere; availability and steps depend on the situation and model. | It is not the same as joining the printer to the home Wi-Fi network. |
| Wi-Fi range extension | Improving coverage when the Wireless Network Test report or printer placement indicates weak signal farther from the router. | It does not correct credentials, setup-mode, app-discovery, VPN, or network-isolation problems. |
Use the option that matches the failure rather than treating all three as interchangeable. Local Wi-Fi is the normal choice when the printer and the device sending work can access the same home network. Wi-Fi Direct is a separate direct-connection alternative when shared-network access is unavailable or restrictions interfere, subject to the printer model and situation. A range extender is about coverage when the signal is weak; it does not replace either of those connection methods or correct a discovery problem.

When to use a full printer reset
A full reset is not the first step for a Wi-Fi connection problem. Try restoring Wi-Fi setup mode, checking the network and discovery settings, restarting the devices, and examining signal strength first. If a broader printer error makes a full reset appropriate, HP’s general reset guidance describes unplugging the printer’s power, waiting 60 seconds, and reconnecting it directly to a wall outlet. A general reset is distinct from restoring network settings, so use the instructions intended for the problem and model.
For a Wi-Fi-only issue, begin with restoring network settings rather than jumping to a broader reset. The Wi-Fi setup procedure is intended to prepare the printer for a new wireless connection, while the general reset guidance addresses a broader printer reset. If you do need that broader step because of another printer error, follow HP’s model-appropriate directions; the general guidance specifies disconnecting power, waiting 60 seconds, and reconnecting directly to a wall outlet. Do not confuse that procedure with the Wi-Fi setup-mode steps.
Use model-specific instructions when the controls differ
HP inkjet printers do not all use the same panel, menus, or wireless setup button sequence. If you cannot find the stated network option, or the printer’s buttons do not match the instructions, select HP’s wireless setup guidance for the exact model. The same model-specific approach applies if the app’s labels or setup flow differ from what you see on the printer.
This matters most on models without a touchscreen, where restoring Wi-Fi setup mode can involve a button sequence rather than a menu. Do not guess at a sequence based on a different printer’s controls. Use the model-specific instructions for the printer in front of you, then return to the setup app and complete the connection while setup mode is active. If a menu label differs slightly, the menu arrangement can vary; use the exact model’s guidance rather than assuming a missing option means the printer cannot reconnect.

Why can’t the HP app find my printer?
Check that Wi-Fi is enabled on your phone or computer and that it is connected to the same intended local network as the printer. Enable Bluetooth during setup, allow the HP app the location permissions it requests on mobile, and disconnect from a VPN. Also make sure the printer is still in Wi-Fi setup mode; setup mode lasts up to two hours after restoration, so restore it again if that window has passed.
Should I connect my phone to DIRECT-xx-HP?
Not as a substitute for ordinary home Wi-Fi setup. DIRECT-xx-HP is the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct signal, which is a separate direct-connection option. For normal printing over the home network, connect the printer to local Wi-Fi and keep the setup phone or computer on that intended network.

Can a Wi-Fi range extender fix every connection problem?
No. It may help when the Wireless Network Test report or printer placement indicates weak signal farther from the router. It will not correct wrong credentials, setup mode that is inactive, VPN or app-discovery issues, or guest-network isolation. Check signal and placement before considering an extender.
When should I use a full reset instead of restoring network settings?
For a Wi-Fi connection issue, try restoring Wi-Fi setup mode first. A full reset is not the first troubleshooting step and is more appropriate when a broader printer error calls for it. HP’s general reset guidance describes unplugging power, waiting 60 seconds, and reconnecting directly to a wall outlet; follow the instructions for your model and situation.
What if the printer appears in the app but is offline?
That differs from the app being unable to find the printer during setup. Use HP’s printer-not-found or offline guidance for an unavailable or offline printer rather than repeatedly restoring wireless setup mode without checking the offline symptom.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t the HP app find my printer?
