Start by treating this as a connection-path problem, not automatically a bad cable. Unplug and firmly reseat both ends, verify that the computer is connected to a router’s LAN/Ethernet port rather than its Internet/WAN port, and inspect the plugs and jacks. Then use a known-good cable, a different LAN port, and—if possible—another device to isolate the failed part. If the wired link comes up but websites still do not load, the cable is probably no longer the primary suspect; continue with device, IP-configuration, router, modem, or service troubleshooting.
The sequence below is designed to change one variable at a time. That prevents you from replacing a working cable when the real problem is a damaged router port, a disabled adapter, or an internet-service outage.
Understand what has to work
A wired connection has several separate stages:
- Physical path: the cable, its eight contacts, and both jacks must make an electrical connection.
- Link negotiation: the Ethernet ports must detect one another and establish a link.
- Local network configuration: the computer must obtain usable network settings from the router or from a manually configured network.
- Internet service: the router, modem, and ISP must be able to reach destinations beyond your local network.
A failure at a later stage can look like a cable failure. Conversely, a marginal cable can keep a link light on while causing intermittent or slow communication. Cisco’s LAN-switching troubleshooting documentation states,
“A link light does not guarantee that the cable is fully functional.”

Use the light as a clue, not as a pass/fail certification.
Run the fastest physical checks first
- Disconnect both ends. Remove the plug from the computer, dock, game console, or other device and from the router, wall jack, switch, or patch panel. Reinsert each plug until its latch clicks. A plug that looks inserted but is not fully latched can make intermittent contact.
- Confirm the intended ports. A device-to-router cable belongs in a numbered LAN or Ethernet socket. Microsoft specifically warns that a PC-to-router cable should not be placed in the router’s Internet/WAN socket; that socket is normally used for the modem-to-router connection. If your equipment has a combined label, follow the port labels printed on the hardware.
- Inspect the contacts and housing. Look through each transparent plug for bent, recessed, missing, or uneven metal contacts. Check the jack for dust, broken plastic, or an obstruction. Cisco advises checking both connection ends and looking for damaged or missing contacts.
- Remove strain from the cable. Make sure furniture is not crushing it and that the cable is not sharply bent at either plug. A cable can remain linked while its conductors or termination are stressed, so gently reposition it before testing again.
- Check both endpoint indicators. If the computer, adapter, switch, and router provide link or activity LEDs, note which ones illuminate after reconnection. Hardware differs: some ports have separate link and activity lights, some combine them, and some omit them entirely.
- Wait for the device to renegotiate. After reseating, give the ports a short moment to detect one another, then check the operating system’s wired-network status. Do not interpret a brief blink during negotiation as a stable connection.
If the connection returns after reseating and remains stable when the cable is left undisturbed, monitor it. A connector that repeatedly loses contact is not reliably fixed; continue with substitution and port testing.
Use substitution to identify the failed part
The most useful test is a known-good cable: one that is already working on another connection or has just been verified in a different setup. Disconnect the suspect cable, connect the known-good cable to the same two endpoints, and repeat the connection test without changing anything else.
Recommended Free Tools
| Observation | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The known-good cable works in the original setup. | The original cable or one of its plugs. | Replace the suspect cable with a Cat5e or Cat6 patch cable, then retest. |
| Neither cable works in the original router port, but another LAN port works. | The first router or switch port. | Leave the cable in the working port and have the failed port serviced or disabled if the equipment allows it. |
| The same cable and port work with another device. | The first computer, adapter, dock, or its configuration. | Inspect that device’s Ethernet adapter and network settings rather than buying another cable. |
| Another device also fails with the same cable and port. | The cable, port, or fixed run between them. | Try a second cable and a second LAN port. If a wall run is involved, test the run or call a qualified installer. |
| Link indicators illuminate, but no websites open. | IP configuration, router, modem, DNS, or ISP service rather than basic cable detection. | Use the operating-system troubleshooter and restart the network equipment according to its instructions. |
Change one endpoint at a time. First replace the cable while keeping the ports and device unchanged. Next move the cable to another LAN port. Finally, test another device on the same cable and port. Changing all three simultaneously can make a failed component impossible to identify.
Interpret link and activity lights correctly
No light at either endpoint
No light usually means that one or both ports do not detect a physical link. Recheck insertion, the port choice, visible damage, and the adapter’s enabled state. Then substitute the cable and try a different LAN port. If a known-good cable still produces no light with multiple ports, the device adapter, router, switch, or fixed wiring is more likely than the original patch cable.

A light at only one end
Asymmetric indications can point to a damaged contact, a faulty jack, or hardware whose LEDs report different conditions. Because indicator designs vary, do not diagnose from the pattern alone. Repeat the test with a known-good cable and another port, and use the operating system’s wired-status message as a second observation.
Lights at both ends, but the connection drops
A lit link proves that the ports detected something; it does not prove that every conductor, termination, or transmission characteristic is sound. Cisco specifically cautions that a stressed cable can retain link while operating marginally. Inspect bends and latch tension, substitute the cable, and watch whether the problem follows the cable or stays with the port or device.

Activity flickers normally
Flashing activity generally means traffic is moving, not that the internet is reachable. A local link can be healthy while the computer lacks a usable IP configuration or the router has lost its upstream connection. Move to the higher-level checks below instead of repeatedly unplugging a cable that is already passing local traffic.
When the Ethernet link works but the internet does not
Separate local connectivity from internet access. A computer may report a wired connection because it can communicate with the router even when the modem, router configuration, or ISP is unavailable.
Check the computer’s network status
Open the device’s network settings and verify that the wired adapter is enabled and reports a connection. Look for an assigned IP address, a default gateway, and the absence of an explicit cable-disconnected message. Linksys and TP-Link support material identify IP configuration as a possible cause when the physical connection is present. A TP-Link article carrying a May 7, 2026 update also places IP configuration among the conditions to check.

If the adapter is disabled, enable it and test again. If settings were manually entered for a special network, confirm that they match that network; otherwise, use the network’s normal automatic configuration. Do not change unrelated DNS, proxy, or security settings at random, because doing so can create a second problem and obscure the original one.

Microsoft’s support guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. On Windows 11, open Settings, go to System, choose Troubleshoot, open Other troubleshooters, and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter when that entry is offered. Microsoft’s current flow may open the Get Help app instead of a classic wizard; follow its prompts and record any detected cause.
On Windows 10, open Settings, choose Network & Internet, open Status, and select Network troubleshooter. The exact wording can differ by Windows build, so use the Network and Internet help entry if the older label is absent.
Restart the modem and router safely
Microsoft recommends restarting the modem and router when a wired connection is present but internet access is not. Follow the equipment manufacturer’s restart sequence: use the power controls or disconnect power as directed, allow the devices to shut down, reconnect them in the documented order, and wait for their normal status indicators before retesting. Do not press a recessed factory-reset button; a reset can erase the router’s configuration and is not the same as a restart.
After the equipment has recovered, test more than one destination or device if possible. If every device is offline while local Ethernet links remain up, the problem is more likely upstream of the cable: the router’s WAN connection, modem, account, or ISP service. Contact the provider or equipment support with the observations you recorded rather than reporting only that the cable will not connect.

Decide whether to replace the cable
Replace the cable when substitution shows that the known-good cable restores the connection in the same setup. A Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet patch cable is a reasonable replacement choice; Linksys recommends Cat5e, Cat6, or higher in its router guidance, and Microsoft recommends cable substitution as a diagnostic step. Choose a cable long enough to route without tension, with intact latches and undamaged plugs. A higher category does not repair a bad port or an incorrectly wired wall run, so do not use the label as a substitute for testing.
Keep the failed cable separate until the test is complete. If the replacement works only when the plug is held at a particular angle, the jack or plug may be physically damaged. If the replacement fails in exactly the same way, return to port and device tests instead of buying progressively more expensive cables.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test a wall run or self-terminated cable
A basic Ethernet or RJ45 cable tester is optional. It is most useful for a cable you made yourself or a run installed through a wall, ceiling, or conduit—situations where swapping in a short patch cable does not test the hidden section.
What a basic tester can reveal
The tester manual cited for this procedure describes checking conductor sequence and identifying common faults such as open conductors, shorted conductors, and miswires. Connect the tester’s main unit to one end and its remote unit to the other, then read the displayed sequence according to that model’s instructions. A missing number can indicate an open; an unexpected order can indicate a miswire; an abnormal simultaneous indication can indicate a short.
What it cannot prove
A continuity-style tester does not certify every performance characteristic of a network cable. A run can pass a simple conductor check and still perform poorly because of termination quality, excessive stress, interference, length, or another installation issue. The cited tester evidence is a product manual, not an independent certification standard.

When to stop and escalate
If the run is inaccessible, the tester result is unclear, or retermination would require opening building finishes, use a qualified network installer. Give the installer the exact endpoints, the tester result, and whether a temporary patch cable works. Replacing short patch leads repeatedly will not repair a damaged conductor inside a wall.
Follow the symptom that matches your case
The computer says the cable is unplugged
- Reseat both ends and verify the LAN-versus-WAN port choice.
- Inspect contacts and try a known-good cable.
- Try another LAN port and check whether the adapter is enabled.
- If several cables and ports fail, test another device to distinguish a computer-adapter fault from a router or fixed-wiring fault.
The connection works until the cable moves
- Look for a loose latch, cracked plug, bent contact, or strain at the jack.
- Route the cable without a sharp bend or pinch.
- Replace the cable if the fault follows it; replace or service the jack if every cable fails when moved at that port.
The link is fast sometimes and slow at other times
- Do not assume that a steady link light clears the cable; a marginal cable can retain link.
- Substitute a known-good cable and repeat the same transfer or connection test.
- Test another port and another device before changing software settings.
- If the symptom remains with different cables, investigate the endpoint, switch/router port, or fixed run.
Only one room or wall outlet is affected
Test a short known-good patch cable directly from the device to a working LAN port. If that succeeds, the in-wall outlet or its run is the likely boundary. Test the fixed run with an appropriate cable tester or arrange professional service; do not assume the router is defective because one remote outlet is dead.
Every wired device lost internet access at once
If local link lights remain on for multiple devices, a simultaneous cable failure is unlikely. Check the router’s WAN/modem connection, restart the modem and router according to their instructions, and use the Windows or device troubleshooter only for the affected endpoint. If wireless devices are also offline, provide the ISP or router manufacturer with that broader symptom.
Record the result before changing anything else
Write down four observations: which endpoint link lights appear, whether a known-good cable works, whether another LAN port works, and whether another device works on the same cable and port. Those four results usually place the fault in one of four areas:
- Cable: the problem follows one cable and disappears with a verified substitute.
- Port: the problem stays with one LAN jack while another jack works.
- Device or adapter: another device works on the same cable and port.
- Higher-level service: the wired link is established, but IP configuration, router, modem, or ISP access fails.
Use that record when contacting support. It is more actionable than saying only that the Ethernet cable will not connect, and it prevents support from asking you to repeat tests that already isolated the fault.
