If your Arlo Video Doorbell 2K sends alerts to your phone but the indoor chime is silent, first identify whether the doorbell is wire-free or wired. A wire-free installation needs a powered, network-connected Arlo Chime paired in Arlo Secure. A wired installation depends on the Power Kit, a correct Traditional Chime setting, a non-bypassed circuit, and a 16–24V AC transformer. Follow the matching checklist below; do not change wiring until power is isolated at the breaker.
Start by identifying your installation
The same symptom has different causes in the two Arlo Video Doorbell 2K setups. Look at the doorbell and the device that should make the indoor sound:
| Installation | What should ring indoors | What it depends on | First place to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wire-free 2K | A separate Arlo Chime or Arlo Chime 2 | Chime power, internet access, pairing, and doorbell sound settings | Arlo Secure > the chime device > Paired Devices |
| Wired 2K | The existing mechanical or digital household chime, or a separately installed Arlo Chime | Power Kit wiring, bypass switch, Traditional Chime mode, transformer output, and temperature | Power Kit position and Chime Settings > Traditional Chime |
If you are unsure, a wire-free doorbell normally has no low-voltage wires connected at the mounting plate. A wired doorbell has two conductors leading to the doorbell and an Arlo Power Kit installed at the indoor chime. Do not open a chime enclosure while power is on.
Fix a wire-free Arlo Video Doorbell 2K
Wire-free models do not use the home’s traditional chime circuit. They tell a paired Arlo Chime to sound over the network. The documented compatible paths for a 2K or HD wire-free doorbell are Arlo Chime 2 (AC2001) and the compatible Arlo Chime (AC1001). Complete these checks in order.

1. Confirm that the chime is powered
- Check that the chime is firmly plugged into a working outlet.
- Test the outlet with another appliance or move the chime temporarily to an outlet that you know works.
- Allow the chime to start completely before pressing the doorbell. A chime that has lost power cannot respond even if the doorbell itself is online.
If the chime remains unresponsive in a known-good outlet, treat it as a chime power or hardware problem rather than a doorbell button problem.
2. Verify the internet connection
Arlo lists an internet connection problem as a cause of a silent Chime 2. Confirm that the home router is online and that the doorbell and chime can reach it. If your router recently changed its Wi-Fi name, password, band, or security mode, reconnect the affected Arlo devices in Arlo Secure. A phone notification can still appear from a device that has intermittent connectivity, so test the chime after the network is stable.
3. Check pairing in Arlo Secure
- Open the Arlo Secure app.
- Open the Chime 2 device (or the installed Arlo Chime).
- Find Paired Devices.
- Confirm that the Video Doorbell 2K is listed.
Arlo states that Chime 2 must be paired with a doorbell before a press can trigger it. If the doorbell is absent, use the app’s pairing or device-setup flow to add it, then press the doorbell once to test. Pair the actual doorbell that is installed at the entrance; selecting another Arlo camera will not make that button ring this chime.

4. Turn off Silent Mode
- In Arlo Secure, open the Video Doorbell 2K.
- Open its device settings.
- Locate Silent Mode.
- Disable Silent Mode and save the change if the app asks.
Silent Mode suppresses the audible chime response while other doorbell functions can continue, which explains why the doorbell may still send a phone alert. Press the button again after changing the setting.

5. Confirm that the accessory is the right chime path
For the wire-free 2K/HD doorbell, use the supported Arlo Chime 2 (AC2001) or compatible Arlo Chime (AC1001) path described by Arlo. A generic plug-in buzzer, an unrelated smart speaker, or an unpaired Arlo accessory is not a substitute for the documented pairing. If the original chime is missing, incompatible, or failed, replacing it with a compatible Arlo Chime 2 is the direct physical solution.
6. Isolate the fault with a controlled test
- Watch the doorbell tile in Arlo Secure while pressing the physical button.
- If the app registers the press but the chime does not sound, focus on pairing, Silent Mode, chime power, and internet service.
- If the app does not register the press, troubleshoot the doorbell’s battery, network connection, and button operation before replacing the chime.
Make one change at a time and test again. This prevents a network reset and a pairing change from hiding which setting corrected the problem.
Fix a wired Arlo Video Doorbell 2K
A wired installation uses the existing household chime through an Arlo Power Kit. The Power Kit controls how the doorbell and chime share the low-voltage supply. A silent physical chime can therefore be caused by a switch position or app setting even when the doorbell video and phone alerts work.
1. Cut power before inspecting the chime
Turn off the circuit at the breaker before removing the indoor chime cover or touching the Power Kit wires. Do not assume that a low-voltage doorbell is safe to handle while the transformer circuit is energized. If you cannot identify the correct breaker, stop and have an electrician isolate and verify the circuit.

2. Inspect the Power Kit connections
- With the breaker off, remove the chime cover carefully.
- Check that the Power Kit wires remain attached to the terminals shown in the Arlo installation instructions.
- Look for a wire pulled loose when the cover was installed or replaced.
- Restore the cover, turn the breaker back on, and test only after every connection is secure.
Arlo identifies a disconnected Power Kit wire as a possible reason an existing chime does not ring. Do not improvise terminal locations or splice mains wiring. If a terminal is damaged, a conductor is too short, or the existing chime wiring is unclear, use a qualified electrician.
3. Make sure bypass mode is off when you want the traditional chime
Find the bypass switch on the Arlo Power Kit. For normal operation of the existing household chime, leave the switch in its non-bypass position. In bypass mode, the Power Kit electrically disconnects the doorbell from the existing chime, so the physical chime will deliberately remain silent when someone presses the wired doorbell.
Bypass mode is not a volume control or a temporary mute. It is intended for situations such as an unexpected buzz or ring, an amber setup LED, or an existing chime that is not rated for the upgraded transformer voltage. If you intentionally use bypass mode, skip to the separate-chime instructions below rather than trying to make the disconnected chime ring.

5. Check transformer voltage and available power
Arlo’s wired guidance specifies a 16–24V AC transformer range. The measurement must be AC voltage at the transformer or the appropriate low-voltage points, not a guess based on the label of an old adapter. A transformer outside the supported range, or one that cannot supply enough power under load, can leave the doorbell online while the chime fails to actuate.
- Use an AC-capable multimeter only if you know how to test low-voltage doorbell circuits safely.
- Have an electrician measure output and available power when the transformer rating is unknown, access is difficult, or any mains-side work is involved.
- Do not install a higher-voltage transformer simply because the chime is quiet; an incompatible existing chime may buzz, ring unexpectedly, or require bypass mode.
If measurement shows that the supply is inadequate, replace it only with a compatible 16–24V AC doorbell transformer selected for the complete installation. The correct rating depends on the doorbell, Power Kit, and chime, so do not choose solely by appearance.
6. Look for an overheating warning
The Arlo Video Doorbell 2K (2nd Generation) manual lists excessive doorbell temperature as a possible reason an existing chime does not ring. Check Arlo Secure for an overheating or temperature warning. Move the doorbell out of direct heat only if the installation allows it without altering its weather protection, and let it return to a normal operating temperature before testing. Repeated warnings require attention to mounting location, ventilation around the device, and professional support rather than repeated breaker resets.

| Power Kit state | Traditional Chime setting | Expected indoor result | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Normal, non-bypass | Mechanical or Digital, matching the installed unit | Existing household chime should respond to a press | Use when you want to preserve the traditional physical chime |
| Bypass | Neither/None | Existing household chime will not ring | Use for buzzing, unexpected ringing, an amber setup LED, or an incompatible chime/transformer combination |
If bypass mode is required, install a compatible Arlo Chime or replace the existing chime with one rated for the transformer. Arlo identifies an Arlo Chime as the way to add an audible indoor alert when the original wired chime is bypassed. Do not set the app to Mechanical or Digital while the circuit is bypassed; that asks the system to drive a chime that has been deliberately disconnected.

Use this symptom-to-cause check
- Phone alerts work, but a wire-free chime is silent: check Chime power, internet, Paired Devices, and Silent Mode in that order.
- Phone alerts work, but a wired chime is silent: check whether bypass is enabled, then verify Traditional Chime type and Power Kit wiring.
- The wired chime buzzes or rings unexpectedly: bypass mode may be appropriate; follow it with the Neither/None app setting and provide a separate compatible indoor chime if you still need sound.
- The setup LED is amber: Arlo lists bypass mode as a possible remedy, but verify the chime and transformer compatibility before changing the switch.
- The chime stopped after its cover was replaced: turn off the breaker and inspect for a Power Kit wire that was pulled loose.
- The doorbell works until it gets hot: check the app for an overheating warning and address the temperature condition before further electrical changes.
- Nothing changes after settings are corrected: perform one fresh button test, then verify the measured transformer output or have an electrician inspect the circuit. Avoid repeated random resets.
When to replace a component
Replace or add an indoor chime
An Arlo Chime 2 (AC2001) is the documented compatible replacement-style indoor chime for Video Doorbell 2K/HD installations. It is the practical choice when the original indoor chime is missing, physically incompatible, bypassed, or impossible to wire correctly. For a wire-free setup, pair it in Arlo Secure and confirm it appears under Paired Devices. For a wired setup using bypass mode, it provides the audible alert that the disconnected traditional chime can no longer provide.
Address the transformer only when measurement supports it
A compatible 16–24V AC transformer is relevant when testing shows insufficient voltage or available power. It is not a universal cure for a pairing error, Silent Mode, a wrong Traditional Chime selection, or a disconnected Power Kit wire. Measure first or have an electrician verify the supply; replacing a transformer without knowing the installed chime’s rating can create buzzing or other compatibility problems.
Safety and escalation checklist
- Turn off the breaker before opening a wired chime enclosure.
- Never work on mains-side transformer wiring unless you are qualified to do so.
- Use an AC-rated meter and the correct test procedure; do not use a resistance or DC-voltage reading as a substitute for transformer-output testing.
- Photograph existing low-voltage connections before disconnecting anything, but do not rely on a photograph instead of the installation diagram.
- Stop if wires are frayed, terminals are scorched, the transformer is hot, or the breaker trips.
- Use an electrician when the transformer rating is unknown, the circuit cannot be isolated confidently, or the measured voltage is outside the supported range.
Final verification sequence
- Identify wire-free or wired installation.
- For wire-free, confirm chime power and internet, verify the doorbell under Paired Devices, and disable Silent Mode.
- For wired, isolate power, check Power Kit connections, set the switch to non-bypass for a traditional chime, and choose Mechanical or Digital correctly.
- Verify the wired supply is within 16–24V AC when electrical troubleshooting is necessary.
- Check for an overheating warning.
- Press the doorbell once and listen at the indoor chime while watching the app for the event.
If the doorbell event appears in the app but the correctly configured chime still does not sound, the remaining fault is likely in the chime, Power Kit, transformer, or wiring. At that point, use the measured results and the installation type to guide Arlo support or an electrician instead of changing multiple settings at once.
