When an app freezes or turns black after an advertisement, start with the least destructive fixes: close and reopen it, restart the device, and install app and operating-system updates. On Android, clear the app cache before considering app-data deletion. On iPhone or iPad, verify that your progress is synced before deleting and reinstalling. If the failure repeatedly follows one advertisement, document it and contact the app developer.
What a post-ad freeze or black screen means
A frozen frame, unresponsive controls, or a completely black display after an ad is a symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis. Platform support guidance for unresponsive apps does not establish one universal cause, and the available evidence does not prove that the phone, the advertising network, or a particular ad component is always responsible. The same symptom can occur once and then disappear, or recur only when a specific ad is shown.
Your immediate goal is to restore the app without deleting local progress. Work from reversible actions to more consequential ones, and stop as soon as the app behaves normally. If the problem affects only one app while other apps work, the app developer is the appropriate escalation point after you complete the platform steps.

Google Play Help advises restarting after each troubleshooting step to check whether the issue is resolved. Apple’s app guidance likewise places force-closing, restarting, and updating before deletion and reinstallation. Menu labels differ by Android manufacturer and operating-system version, so use the closest equivalent label on your device.

Before you reset anything, protect your progress
Do not clear app data or delete an app until you know where its important information is stored. Some apps keep progress in an account or cloud service; others keep it only on the device. A reinstall can therefore return you to a previous sync point or remove an offline save entirely.
- Open the app’s account, profile, or settings page if it is still usable and confirm that you are signed in.
- Look for a stated cloud-save, backup, synchronization, or account-link status.
- Record your user ID, recovery code, or other account identifier if the app provides one.
- Do not assume that a purchase receipt, achievement, or game level is recoverable merely because you can see it on screen.
- If you cannot verify synchronization, treat clear-data and delete/reinstall actions as potentially destructive and contact the developer first.
Step 1: Close and reopen the app
Android
- Open the recent-apps view using your phone’s navigation control or gesture.
- Swipe the affected app away to close it.
- If it will not close or immediately returns to the frozen screen, open Settings, find Apps (sometimes Apps & notifications), select the affected app, and tap Force stop. Confirm when prompted.
- Launch the app again and wait for it to finish loading before starting another activity or playing another ad.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the app switcher: swipe up from the bottom and pause on devices without a Home button, or double-click the Home button on models that have one.
- Find the affected app and swipe its preview up to close it.
- Return to the Home Screen and open the app again.
Force-closing ends the current app session; it does not repair a damaged installation or guarantee that an ad-related failure will not return. If the app opens normally, continue using it cautiously and note whether the next advertisement triggers the same symptom.
Step 2: Restart the device
A full restart clears the current app session and reloads the operating system. Use the device’s normal power menu rather than repeatedly tapping a frozen app.
- Android: press and hold the power button, choose Restart (or power off, wait briefly, and turn the device back on), then test the app.
- iPhone or iPad: use the hardware-button and on-screen power controls for your model, wait until the device is fully off, then turn it on and reopen the app.
If the app still freezes, restart once more after the next applicable step, following Google’s recommendation to check the result after each change. A restart is a diagnostic checkpoint: if the app works immediately after reboot but fails after the same ad later, record that pattern for the developer.

Step 3: Install app and operating-system updates
Android
- Open the Google Play Store, open your account menu, and check for available updates.
- Install an update for the affected app if one is offered.
- Open Settings and check the system-update area. The exact path varies by manufacturer and Android version; it may be labeled System update, Software update, or similar.
- Restart the device and test the app again.
iPhone or iPad
- Open the App Store, tap your account picture, and review available app updates.
- Install the affected app’s update if one is listed.
- If no app update is available, open Settings and check General > Software Update for iOS or iPadOS.
- Install a compatible operating-system update, restart if requested, and test the app.
Apple’s support guidance, published March 31, 2026, recommends checking App Store updates and then updating iOS or iPadOS when an app is not working as expected. An update may correct an incompatibility, but it is not proof that the advertisement itself was defective.
Step 4: Test the connection when the failure follows an ad
If the freeze appears immediately after an advertisement, test whether the behavior changes on another connection. The Atlas Earth Help Center recommends switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data, updating the app, and restarting the device for an ad that freezes or fails to reward. That is an app-specific support recommendation, not evidence that every post-ad black screen has the same network cause.
- Close the affected app.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, temporarily disable Wi-Fi and use mobile data, then reopen the app. If you are on mobile data, try a trusted Wi-Fi network instead.
- Repeat the same in-app action only once or twice so you can observe whether the symptom changes.
- Do not repeatedly trigger an advertisement if doing so risks duplicate actions, lost rewards, or additional freezes.
Record whether the app works on one connection but not the other. Also note whether other apps and websites load normally. This comparison helps the developer distinguish a connection-dependent incident from a failure that is reproducible inside the app.
Step 5: Clear the Android app cache
Android commonly provides separate controls for temporary cached files and the app’s stored data. Use the cache control first because it is the less destructive option. The exact menu varies by phone.

- Open Settings.
- Open Apps, Applications, or the equivalent list.
- Select the affected app.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage, Clear data, or a similarly named destructive control.
- Restart the device, open the app, and test it.
Clearing a cache removes temporary files; it does not establish why an advertisement caused the symptom. The app may take longer to start the first time afterward while it rebuilds temporary content. If you cannot find a cache option, your device may use a different menu or may not expose that control; do not substitute clear-data without checking your save status.
Step 6: Consider clear data or reinstall only after verification
Android clear-data option
Some Android phones show Clear storage or Clear data beside the cache control. This can remove the app’s local settings, downloaded files, sign-in state, and locally stored progress. Google’s guidance warns that uninstalling erases data saved in the app; the same caution applies to any Android control that explicitly clears stored app data.
Use this step only when the app’s account sync or backup is confirmed, you have recorded any recovery information, and the developer’s support instructions point you to a reset. After clearing data, reopen the app and sign in again if required.
Delete and reinstall on iPhone or iPad
Apple warns that deleting an app may lose data stored in it. Before deletion, confirm that progress is linked to an account or backup and that you know the credentials needed to restore it. Then:

- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Choose the option to remove or delete the app and confirm.
- Restart the device if the app was repeatedly unresponsive.
- Download the app again from the App Store.
- Sign in with the same account and verify that your progress or settings returned before using the app normally.
Reinstallation replaces the app package; it cannot recover data that existed only in the deleted local installation. If the app still fails on a clean installation, further reinstalls are unlikely to solve a defect that requires a developer fix.
When only one advertisement triggers the problem
A repeatable ad-specific pattern is useful evidence, but it is not proof of a single technical cause. Stop treating the event as random and collect a concise incident record:
- App name and the device model.
- Android, iOS, or iPadOS version and the app version, if visible.
- Date and approximate time, including your time zone if the developer is elsewhere.
- Whether you were on Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- What happened: frozen controls, black screen, crash, missing reward, or return to the app.
- The advertisement’s product, advertiser, or distinctive wording if you can identify it.
- Whether closing, restarting, switching networks, or updating changed the result.
- A screenshot or short screen recording, provided it does not expose passwords, payment details, private messages, or other sensitive information.
Do not keep tapping a black screen or repeatedly replaying the same ad to collect evidence. One or two clear observations are safer and more useful than many uncontrolled attempts.
Contact the app developer with a reproducible report
Use the app’s in-app help, official support form, or the developer contact listed on its store page. Explain that the app freezes or shows a black screen after an ad and include the incident record. State which steps you completed and whether the issue occurs on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Ask the developer to investigate the specific ad impression or session rather than claiming that the ad network is at fault. If a reward was not credited, include the approximate time and your account identifier, but do not send passwords, full payment-card numbers, authentication codes, or unrelated personal documents. Keep the original screenshot or recording in case support requests it through a secure channel.
Use the symptom to choose the next branch
The app works after reopening or restarting
Continue normally, but note whether the next ad causes the same failure. A one-time recovery does not prove the underlying condition is gone; a recurring pattern warrants a developer report even if restarting restores access.
The app fails every time it opens
Complete the update checks, verify account sync, and then consider the platform-specific reset options. Avoid deleting local data when you cannot confirm a backup. If the app remains unusable after a clean reinstall, contact its developer with your device and version details.

This is broader than a single ad incident. Update the operating system, restart the device, and note whether the failures occur on one connection or everywhere. Because the supplied platform guidance is general app troubleshooting rather than a diagnosis of a particular advertising defect, persistent multi-app failures require device or operating-system support rather than repeated reinstalls of one app.
Only one app fails, and only after one ad
Capture the ad details, switch networks once as a test, and send the report to that app’s developer. Do not generalize an app-specific support recommendation to every app that displays advertising.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Clearing data instead of cache: the labels are similar, but the consequences are not. Read the button name before confirming.
- Reinstalling before checking synchronization: local game progress or offline settings may not return.
- Assuming a black screen proves hardware failure: a single app symptom does not establish a defective display or phone.
- Assuming the ad is definitively responsible: record the correlation and let the developer investigate the session.
- Skipping updates: platform support places app and operating-system updates among the standard early checks.
- Repeating a failed ad interaction: repeated attempts can obscure the pattern and may create additional account or reward problems.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop after the app works reliably, or after you have completed the non-destructive steps and gathered enough information for support. Further cache clears, resets, or reinstalls are not a substitute for an app update or developer investigation when the same advertisement consistently reproduces the failure. If the app contains valuable local data and you cannot verify a backup, preserve the installation and contact the developer before taking a destructive action.
