If your Android launcher keeps crashing, the Home screen repeatedly reloads, or your layout keeps resetting, start with a phone restart and available Android and launcher updates. Next force-stop the launcher and clear only its cache, then restart and test. If the problem continues, use Safe Mode to check whether a downloaded app is interfering. Clear the launcher’s storage only after protecting your layout, and leave a factory reset until every less-destructive step has failed.
The exact menu names differ between manufacturers, Android versions and launchers. Google explicitly notes that “Settings can vary by phone,” so use the labels on your model rather than treating any single path as universal. (Google Android Help)
These steps apply whether you use a built-in launcher or a downloaded one, but the name shown in Settings and the available backup options may differ. Identify the phone model and launcher before changing data so that you can find the right manufacturer instructions if the general sequence does not solve the problem.

First, identify what is actually failing
“The launcher is crashing” can describe several different problems. The correct next step depends on which one you see:

- Only the Home screen closes or reloads: the launcher process is probably stopping and restarting.
- The phone freezes or restarts completely: investigate the wider device, not just the launcher. System updates, storage pressure and downloaded apps can all matter.
- Icons, folders or widgets move, disappear or return to a default arrangement: the launcher may be resetting its saved data, failing to load the layout, or no longer be the selected Home app.
- A message says “launcher keeps stopping” or similar: follow the app-crash sequence below, beginning with the reversible checks.
Before changing anything, write down the phone manufacturer and model, Android version if known, and the launcher’s name. A phone may call its built-in launcher “Home,” “Launcher,” or a manufacturer-specific name. Third-party launchers have their own backup and restore tools. This information is also what a manufacturer or app developer will need if you have to escalate the problem.
If your layout is important, take screenshots of each Home-screen page and note which widgets and folders are present. A screenshot is only a record, not a backup, but it lets you rebuild the arrangement if a later step removes it.
Use the least-destructive troubleshooting sequence first
| Action | What it checks or changes | Risk to data or layout | Reversible? | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart and install updates | Reloads system processes and applies available fixes | Very low | Yes | Low to moderate |
| Force-stop and clear cache | Ends a stuck launcher and removes temporary files | Low | Yes | Moderate |
| Check free storage | Looks for device-wide storage pressure | None | Yes | Moderate |
| Safe Mode | Temporarily disables downloaded apps | Low; some widgets disappear temporarily | Yes, after a normal restart | High for third-party interference |
| Clear launcher storage/data | Deletes the launcher’s saved app data and rebuilds it | High; layout and settings may be lost | No, unless the launcher has a backup | High |
| Factory reset | Erases the phone and installed apps | Very high | No, without restoring a backup | High for persistent device-wide faults |
Do not jump down the table because a crash is frustrating. The first four checks can reveal the cause without deliberately deleting the Home screen.
1. Restart the phone and update both Android and the launcher
Restart normally
Press the phone’s power button and choose Restart, or use the manufacturer’s normal restart control. Wait until the Home screen has fully loaded before opening several apps. A restart clears a temporary process failure; it does not erase your layout.
Install app updates
Open Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, choose Manage apps & device, and install available updates. If your launcher is listed among the apps that can be updated, update it and restart again. A preinstalled launcher may not appear as a normal Play Store app; in that case, look for system or manufacturer updates instead.
Install the Android system update
Open Settings and search for System update, Software update or a similarly named item. The location and wording differ by phone. Install an update only when the phone has adequate battery and a reliable connection, then restart when prompted. Google’s general app-crash guidance puts restarting and updating before more disruptive actions. (Google Android Help)

2. Force-stop the launcher and clear its cache
Find the launcher’s app information page
In Settings, open Apps, Apps & notifications or the equivalent list. Use the search field if one is available and look for the launcher or Home app by the name you recorded. Some system launchers require an Show system apps option before they appear. Do not select a similarly named icon unless you are sure it is the Home-screen app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsForce-stop, then clear cache
- On the launcher’s app information page, tap Force stop and confirm.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache. Do not tap Clear storage or Clear data yet.
- Restart the phone and use the Home screen for a few minutes to see whether the crash returns.
Force-stop ends the current process. Cache clearing removes temporary files; it is not the same as deleting app data. Google lists force-stop and cache/data clearing among general steps for an app that is not working, while also warning that the exact settings vary by phone. (Google Android Help)
3. Check whether low free storage is contributing
Open Settings and search for Storage. Google Android Help says a phone can begin having problems when less than 10% of its storage is free; the page does not display a publication year. This is a general warning signal, not proof that low storage caused your particular launcher crash. (Google Android Help)
If free space is below that level, remove or move large videos, downloads and unused apps, then empty any device recycle bin or trash that still counts against storage. Keep enough space for the system to operate and for updates to download. Restart after freeing space and test the Home screen again. If storage was already comfortably above the warning level, move on rather than repeatedly deleting files.
4. Use Safe Mode to test downloaded apps
Safe Mode starts Android with downloaded apps temporarily disabled. It is a diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. Google warns that some Home-screen widgets can be removed temporarily while the phone is in Safe Mode, so take the screenshots described earlier before entering it. (Google Android Help)
Enter Safe Mode
The key combination and menu vary by manufacturer. On many phones, opening the power menu and touching and holding Power off reveals a Safe Mode prompt; if your phone does not show that prompt, use the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model. Do not assume a sequence that works on one brand will work on another.

Test and interpret the result
- Once Safe Mode appears on screen, use the Home screen repeatedly: open the app drawer, swipe between pages and wait long enough for the usual failure to occur.
- If the launcher still crashes in Safe Mode, downloaded apps are less likely to be the trigger. Continue with storage, launcher data and manufacturer support as appropriate.
- If the problem disappears, restart normally. Remove recently installed or recently updated apps one at a time, restarting and testing after each removal.
A Safe Mode improvement indicates that a downloaded app is likely involved; it does not identify the culprit by itself. Removing several apps at once destroys that diagnostic trail, so change one variable at a time. Google’s Safe Mode guidance recommends checking apps individually when the issue resolves there. (Google Android Help)
5. If the Home screen keeps resetting, verify the Home app before deleting data
A layout that looks reset after a crash or update does not automatically mean the saved layout has been permanently erased. The launcher may still be loading, or Android may have selected a different Home app. Open Settings and search for Default apps, Home app or Digital assistant and input; the relevant label and location are device-specific. Confirm that the launcher you intend to use is selected.
Do not repeatedly tap Clear storage as a way to “refresh” the layout. Each attempt can remove more saved settings without proving what caused the reset. First complete a normal restart, check for updates, confirm the selected Home app and look for a backup or restore option inside the launcher itself. Google’s Home-screen documentation describes device variation rather than one universal Home-app path. (Google Android Help)
6. Clear launcher storage or data only after protecting what you can
Understand the consequence
On the launcher’s app information page, Clear cache removes temporary data. Clear storage or Clear data permanently deletes that app’s stored data, according to Google. For a launcher, that may include its layout, folders, widget placements, preferences and other settings, but the exact result depends on the manufacturer and launcher. Do not promise that installed apps or Home-screen arrangements will survive. (Google Android Help)
Prepare and reset
- Save screenshots of every Home-screen page and record any custom launcher settings.
- Open the launcher and use its own backup/export feature if it provides one. Confirm where the backup is stored and that you can access it after the reset.
- Return to Settings > Apps > the launcher > Storage (the labels may differ).
- Tap Clear storage or Clear data, read the confirmation, and proceed only if you accept the layout loss risk.
- Restart the phone. If Android asks which Home app to use, select the intended launcher. Restore the launcher backup if its restore tool is available, then rebuild any missing widgets from their original apps.
If clearing data fixes the crashes but they return after restoring a particular setting or widget, restore selectively rather than importing everything at once. That makes it easier to find a corrupt configuration.
7. Escalate to the right support channel
When one downloaded launcher is affected
If only one third-party launcher remains broken after updating, force-stopping, clearing cache and testing Safe Mode, contact that app’s developer. Include the phone model, Android version, launcher version, exact error wording, when the issue began and which steps changed it. Google recommends contacting the developer when a single app is affected. (Google Android Help)

When the built-in launcher or the whole phone is affected
A preinstalled or system launcher may require the phone manufacturer’s support team. Use the model-specific support page or an authorized service channel. If the phone itself freezes, restarts or crashes in addition to the Home screen, describe it as a device stability problem and mention storage, system-update and Safe Mode results rather than reporting only “the launcher is broken.”
8. Factory reset is the final resort
A factory data reset erases phone data and uninstalls apps and their associated data. Google recommends backing up first, and warns that reinstalling a downloaded app that caused the problem can bring the problem back. (Google Android Help)
Before you reset
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, authenticator data, files and any launcher backup you need.
- Confirm that you know the Google account credentials and screen lock used on the phone; Android may require them during setup.
- Make sure the phone can complete setup on a stable network and has sufficient battery.
- Record the symptoms and the steps already tried in case the reset does not help.
Run the reset and test cleanly
Search Settings for Factory data reset or Reset options; common labels include Erase all data (factory reset), but the path is manufacturer-specific. After setup, test the Home screen before restoring every app. Install applications gradually, testing after groups or individual apps, so a returning crash can be traced. If the launcher still fails on a freshly reset phone before third-party apps are restored, seek manufacturer or authorized repair support rather than repeating resets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What each result tells you
A restart that fixes the problem only temporarily points to a process or configuration that is being reintroduced; keep the phone and launcher updated and observe whether the failure returns under a particular action. If clearing cache helps, temporary files may have been part of the failure, but a recurrence means the cache was not the complete explanation.
If Safe Mode stops the crashes, a downloaded app is likely involved. Return to normal mode and remove recent apps one at a time, testing after each removal. If the crash continues in Safe Mode, do not keep uninstalling unrelated apps; focus on storage, system updates, launcher data and manufacturer support instead.

Common mistakes that make the problem harder to diagnose
- Clearing data first: it can destroy the layout evidence you need and may not address a downloaded app or system problem.
- Deleting many apps together: if Safe Mode identified third-party interference, removing apps in batches prevents you from finding the responsible one.
- Assuming another phone’s menu path applies: Settings labels, Safe Mode entry and Home-app selection vary by manufacturer and Android version.
- Treating screenshots as a backup: they show placement but do not save launcher settings or widget state.
- Restoring everything immediately after a reset: a bad app, widget or setting can reintroduce the crash before you know what fixed it.
- Calling every reboot a launcher crash: a phone that restarts or freezes system-wide needs broader device troubleshooting.
Quick decision guide
- Home screen reloads but the rest of the phone works: restart, update, force-stop, clear cache, then Safe Mode.
- Icons and widgets moved after a crash or update: confirm the selected Home app and look for a launcher backup before clearing storage.
- The issue stops in Safe Mode: remove recent downloaded apps individually.
- The phone is also freezing or restarting: check system updates and free storage, then use Safe Mode and device support.
- Nothing changes after the non-destructive steps: protect your layout, clear launcher data once, and escalate if it remains broken.
- The device remains unstable after that: back up and consider a factory reset as the last software step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I stop my Android Home screen from resetting?
First restart, install Android and launcher updates, and confirm that the intended launcher is still selected as the Home app. Check for the launcher’s own backup or restore feature before clearing storage. Clearing launcher data can permanently delete saved layout and settings, so use it only after screenshots and any available backup.
Will clearing the launcher cache delete my icons and widgets?
Google distinguishes temporary cache from stored app data. Clearing cache removes temporary files and is the lower-risk step; clearing storage or data permanently deletes app data. Because each launcher stores information differently, do not assume a layout will survive a data clear.
Why does the launcher work in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode temporarily disables downloaded apps. If the crashes stop there, a downloaded app is likely involved, but Safe Mode does not identify which one. Restart normally, remove recently installed or updated apps one at a time, and test after each removal.
What if Safe Mode removes my widgets?
Google warns that some Home-screen widgets can be removed temporarily in Safe Mode. Take screenshots and note your widget arrangement before entering Safe Mode. After a normal restart, widgets may need to be added again from their original apps.
How much free storage should an Android phone have?
Google Android Help says a phone can begin having problems when less than 10% of storage is free. Treat that as a general warning signal, not proof that storage caused your launcher failure. Free space by removing or moving large files and unused apps, then restart and test.
Should I factory-reset a phone whose launcher keeps stopping?
No—not as a first response. Restart, update, force-stop, clear cache, check storage and use Safe Mode first. If you eventually reset, back up data and remember that a downloaded app that caused the issue can bring it back when reinstalled.
I cannot find the launcher in Settings. What should I do?
Search Settings for Apps, Home or Launcher and enable a Show system apps option if available. The built-in launcher may have a manufacturer-specific name. If you still cannot identify it, use the phone maker’s model-specific instructions rather than clearing data from a similarly named app.
Recommended Free Tools
Who should I contact if the steps fail?
Contact the developer when one downloaded launcher is affected, including your model, Android and launcher versions, error wording and troubleshooting results. For a preinstalled launcher or a phone that also freezes or restarts, contact the phone manufacturer or an authorized service channel.
The Bottom Line
Work from reversible to disruptive: restart and update, force-stop and clear cache, check whether storage is below Google’s 10% warning level, then use Safe Mode to isolate downloaded apps. Protect screenshots and any launcher backup before clearing storage, because app data may include your layout and settings. Back up the phone before a factory reset, and seek manufacturer or developer support if the launcher still fails after a clean test.
