If your Android keyboard disappears or will not open, first check whether Gboard is selected and enabled; then restart your phone and update Gboard. If those checks do not help, force-stop the app, clear its cache, and reserve clearing data or reinstalling for later because those steps are more disruptive. These instructions focus on Gboard; menu names and paths can differ on other keyboards and Android devices.
Check whether Gboard is selected or enabled
Android phones can use keyboards from Google, the device maker, or other developers. If a keyboard appears when you tap a text field but it is not Gboard, switch back to Gboard:
- Tap a text-entry field to open the current keyboard.
- Touch and hold the globe key at the bottom of the keyboard.
- Tap Gboard.
If Gboard is missing from the list, it may be turned off. Google’s documented path is Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard. Turn on Gboard. The labels and location may differ by Android version or device manufacturer.

Try the lower-disruption fixes first
Google’s Gboard Help recommends restarting the device and checking for an update. These steps are sensible first checks before resetting the app.

Restart the phone
Restart Android, then tap a text field and check whether the keyboard opens. Google notes that background apps or processes can interfere with Gboard; a restart may resolve a minor malfunction, though it is not a guaranteed fix.
Update Gboard
Open Google Play, find Gboard, and install an available update. Try typing again after the update. If the problem began immediately after an update, see the rollback option below instead of assuming another update will resolve it.

Force-stop Gboard and clear its cache
If Gboard is selected and enabled but still will not open or keeps disappearing, close the app and try again. On many devices, the path is Settings > Apps > Gboard > Force stop. Then tap a text field to relaunch it.

If the issue continues, go to Settings > Apps > Gboard > Storage and cache > Clear cache. Clearing the cache is different from clearing app data: it does not reset Gboard to its default state. Menu wording may vary by device.

Clear Gboard data only if the problem persists
Clearing Gboard’s storage or data resets the app to its default state, including its settings. Use this after the less disruptive checks, not as the first step:
- Open Settings > Apps > Gboard.
- Tap Storage and cache or the equivalent menu on your device.
- Choose Clear storage or Clear data, then confirm.
- Open a text field and check whether Gboard works.
Roll back a recent Gboard update
If the keyboard problem started just after Gboard updated, Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes uninstalling updates to return to an earlier version. Look for Uninstall updates in Gboard’s app information screen, if your device offers it. The option and path can vary. Check Google Play for a later update once the issue is resolved.

Reinstall Gboard as a last resort
If the other checks fail, reinstall Gboard through Google Play. Before removing it, make sure another keyboard is installed and available if Gboard is your only keyboard; otherwise, you could be left without a usable on-screen keyboard to enter text. Reinstalling is not guaranteed to fix every device-specific problem.
If the keyboard still will not open
Confirm that Gboard remains enabled in the on-screen keyboard settings and that it is selected from the keyboard switcher. If the problem persists after the steps above, the cause may be specific to the device, Android version, or another keyboard app; Google’s general Gboard steps do not establish a single diagnosis for every phone.
