If an Amazon retail order shows payment failed during a sale, open Your Orders first. Select Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method on the affected order, then verify your card and billing details. Editing a card in Your Payments alone does not update an order already in process. If the decline continues, contact your bank or card issuer; Amazon says the issuer is the only party that can explain the decline. A repeated decline can result in cancellation, so check the current price and stock before placing a replacement order.
Fix the failed payment from the order itself
Amazon’s retail payment-recovery process is tied to the individual order. Do not start by changing a saved card in your account and assume the open order will update automatically.
- Sign in to Amazon and open Your Orders.
- Find the order showing the payment problem. Open the order details and read its current status and available action.
- If the order offers Retry Payment Method, select it to try the existing payment method again.
- If the retry fails, or you want to use another card, select Change Payment Method.
- Choose an existing payment option or add another card, then follow the on-screen confirmation steps.
- Return to the order details and confirm that Amazon shows the new payment attempt or that the order has resumed processing.
The labels and available choices can vary by order status, region and payment method. Use the controls displayed on the affected order rather than attempting to recreate the order immediately.

Before you retry: a quick sale-day check
Have the order number, the card you intend to use and the issuer’s contact details ready. Read the complete status message rather than relying only on a notification email. The order page is the place to determine whether Amazon is still offering a retry, allowing a payment-method change, or showing that cancellation has already occurred.

Check the card in the issuer’s app for its current expiration date, available spending limit and any security alert. If a bank app asks you to approve an online transaction, complete that approval through the bank’s official app or website before trying the Amazon control again. These checks do not replace the order-level action: after correcting an issuer block or card detail, return to Your Orders and submit the retry or change there.

The first two paths are the only ones that attempt to preserve the existing order. Calling the issuer is diagnostic and corrective on the bank’s side; it does not itself submit a new Amazon authorization. A replacement checkout is a separate transaction and should be treated as such when comparing the displayed price, promotion and stock.
Check every card and billing detail Amazon can validate
Card number and expiration date
Re-enter or inspect the card number and expiration date when you use Change Payment Method. An expired card, a mistyped number or a replacement card with a different number can trigger a decline even when the account has sufficient funds.
Name and billing address
Make sure the billing name and address entered for the payment match the information held by the card issuer. Amazon’s payment guidance also says the billing address must match the shopper’s country of residence and notes that regional restrictions can apply. A shipping address can be different from a billing address; do not substitute the delivery address when the issuer expects the billing address.
Available credit and issuer security checks
Check the issuer’s app or online account for an available balance, a spending limit and a temporary security block. A transaction can be rejected even when money appears available. Amazon’s guidance notes that banks may flag an unexpected or high-value transaction under their security rules.
Why changing Your Payments may not fix an open order
Amazon distinguishes between an account-level saved payment method and the payment attached to an order that is already being processed. Its help states: “Updating a payment method in Your Payments does not reflect on existing orders that are in process.”
You can still use Your Payments to correct a stored card for future purchases, but that edit is not the repair action for this order. After checking or editing the saved card, go back to Your Orders and use Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method on the pending order. If those controls are not displayed, read the order status and any instructions Amazon provides rather than repeatedly editing the wallet.

When the bank or card issuer is the right next contact
Contact the issuer when the payment fails again after you have confirmed the card and billing information, or when the decline makes no sense because funds are available or the card worked for earlier Amazon purchases. Amazon says, “Only your bank can provide information about why your payment was declined.” Amazon cannot disclose an issuer’s internal fraud, authorization or account-status decision.
What to ask the issuer
- Whether the attempted Amazon transaction was received and declined.
- Whether a fraud-prevention rule, geographic restriction, online-purchase setting or spending limit blocked it.
- Whether the card is active for online and recurring-style authorization checks.
- Whether the issuer needs you to approve the transaction or remove a temporary hold before you retry.
Use the issuer’s official phone number, secure message center or banking app. Do not provide a full card number or security code in an unsolicited message. Once the issuer confirms that the card can be used, return to the affected order and select the retry control again.
What happens if Amazon declines the payment again?
Amazon’s retail help says, “If your payment is declined again, we’ll cancel the order.” Cancellation means the original order is no longer the order being processed; changing a saved card afterward cannot restore it.
- Read the order status to confirm whether Amazon has canceled it.
- If you still want the item, open the product page or start a new checkout.
- Before submitting the replacement order, check the displayed price, sale terms and stock status.
- Place the new order with a payment method that the issuer has confirmed can be authorized.
A replacement order receives the price and availability shown when you place it. It is not automatically linked to the canceled order. Save the new order number and confirmation after checkout so you can distinguish it from the canceled transaction.

Will I lose the sale price?
You might. The Amazon retail guidance explains how to retry or change payment and says a repeated decline can cancel the order, but it does not state a sale-specific grace period, sale-price guarantee or inventory hold while a payment problem is being resolved.
Resolve the payment issue promptly, but do not assume the discounted price or the item will be reserved during troubleshooting. If the first order is canceled, check the replacement checkout carefully. The new order may show a different price, a different promotion, or no stock. Amazon’s help does not promise that the original sale price will be honored after cancellation.
Practical sale-day checklist
- Capture the order number and current status from Your Orders.
- Use the order-level retry or change control as soon as it appears.
- Check the issuer for a security approval or block immediately after a second decline.
- Watch for an order-cancellation notice rather than assuming the order is still reserved.
- If reordering, compare the displayed price and availability before paying.
Amazon retail orders versus Amazon Pay purchases on other websites
An Amazon retail order placed on Amazon belongs in Your Orders. Amazon Pay support covers purchases made with Amazon Pay at a separate merchant’s website. Those transactions can appear in Amazon Pay Activity and may show an Update payment method action when an order is suspended.

Do not substitute the Amazon Pay Activity workflow for the retail order workflow in this article. If the item was bought directly from Amazon, use the affected order’s Retry Payment Method or Change Payment Method control. If the purchase was made on another merchant’s site with Amazon Pay, open Amazon Pay Activity instead and follow the status shown there.

Common failed-payment situations and the correct branch
The card is expired
Select Change Payment Method on the order and choose a current card. Updating the expired card in Your Payments may help future checkouts, but you must still apply a payment change to the existing order.
The card was replaced after fraud or loss
A replacement card commonly has a new number or expiration date. Add or select the replacement card from the order-level payment control, then confirm the change. If the issuer has not activated the card for online purchases, contact the issuer before retrying.
The card worked yesterday but fails now
Do not assume that a previous successful charge rules out a new decline. Security rules, spending limits or transaction-pattern checks can change. Check the issuer’s alerts and ask the bank whether it blocked this particular authorization.

The account shows enough money, but Amazon still reports a decline
An available balance does not reveal every authorization rule. The issuer may reject the transaction for a security or account-status reason. Contact the bank, then retry from Your Orders after the issuer confirms the block is cleared.
No retry or change button appears
Read the order’s current status and any message shown on the details page. Amazon’s controls depend on the order state. If the order has already been canceled, the order-level repair path has ended and a new checkout is required if you still want the item. If the order is still pending but offers no payment action, use Amazon’s customer-service channel for that order and keep the order number available.

You have more than one saved payment option
Use the method that is current and authorized for the purchase, selecting it through Change Payment Method on the affected order. Do not assume that because a card is saved in the wallet it is approved for this transaction. If the selected replacement is declined, follow the issuer-contact step before making repeated attempts.
How to avoid another payment failure on the replacement order
- Use a card whose number and expiration date are current.
- Enter the billing name and address exactly as the issuer records them, including the correct country of residence.
- Confirm that online purchases are enabled and that the available limit covers the authorization.
- Respond to any issuer verification prompt before submitting another attempt.
- Review the final checkout price and stock before placing a replacement order after a sale-related cancellation.
These checks reduce common data-entry and issuer-policy problems, but they cannot guarantee approval. The issuer makes the authorization decision.

- Payment failed once: Open Your Orders and select Retry Payment Method if shown.
- Retry failed or the card is wrong: Select Change Payment Method, then choose or add a valid card.
- Decline persists: Contact the bank or issuer and ask why this authorization was rejected.
- Amazon cancels the order: Place a new order only after checking the current sale price and availability.
- Purchase was on another merchant’s website: Use Amazon Pay Activity, not the Amazon retail Your Orders page.
What the official guidance does not promise
- It does not promise that a sale price remains available while a payment issue is investigated.
- It does not promise that inventory is held during a retry or issuer review.
- It does not provide a universal sale-specific deadline for fixing the payment.
- It does not say that editing Your Payments repairs an order already in process.
The dependable sequence is therefore order-level repair, issuer contact when needed, and a price-and-stock check if cancellation forces a reorder.
