Most connection failures with the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition come from using the wrong mode-switch position, pairing Bluetooth incorrectly, or expecting it to work on an Xbox console. The Xbox Edition is officially supported on Windows 10 (version 1903) and later and Android 9.0 and later; 8BitDo says it cannot be used on Xbox consoles.
Identify the host and connection mode first, then follow the matching procedure below. The keyboard supports USB, 2.4G wireless, and Bluetooth, and each mode has a different setup sequence.
First check: is the host an Xbox console?
If you are trying to use the keyboard directly with an Xbox One or Xbox Series console, there is no connection setting that will make it work. Despite the Xbox branding, 8BitDo lists the Retro 87 Xbox Edition for Windows 10 (1903) and later and Android 9.0 and later, and its support information explicitly says the keyboard cannot be used on Xbox consoles.

Identify the symptom and connection mode
Look at the physical mode switch before changing software settings. The switch has three relevant positions:

Also separate the type of failure. A keyboard that has no connection, a keyboard that has shut down from inactivity, a keyboard that types but has no RGB control, and a keyboard with one faulty key require different checks. Do not apply a lighting fix to a missing-input problem.
How to connect the keyboard with USB
- Move the mode switch to OFF. This is the documented position for wired operation.
- Connect the keyboard to a USB port on the Windows or Android host with the USB cable.
- Wait for the operating system to recognize the device. Test typing in a simple text field rather than in a game or configuration utility.
- If the keyboard is not detected, try another USB port and, where possible, another known-good cable. The official instructions do not identify a particular cable, port, driver, or internal component as the cause of a failure, so these are isolation checks rather than a confirmed repair.
The keyboard does not automatically shut down while it is wired. If it works over USB but not wirelessly, the basic key matrix is receiving power and the next investigation should focus on the selected wireless mode, adapter, Bluetooth pairing, or battery state.
How to connect with the included 2.4G adapter
- Insert the included 2.4G adapter into the host.
- Move the keyboard’s mode switch to 2.4.
- Wait for the connection indicator and test a text field.
If the keyboard and adapter no longer communicate, re-pair them:
- Leave the adapter connected to the host.
- Hold the keyboard’s Pair button for three seconds.
- Release it when the connection indicator begins blinking rapidly.
- Allow the keyboard to connect to the adapter, then test typing.
Use the adapter supplied with this keyboard while diagnosing it. A different wireless receiver is not established by the official documentation as interchangeable. If the host has no response, verify that the adapter is fully inserted and that the switch has not moved to BT or OFF.
How do I pair the 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X?
For Bluetooth, the device name shown by the host is 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X. Pairing a different name can leave you connected to another nearby device or looking at an incomplete entry.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the Windows or Android host.
- Move the keyboard’s mode switch to BT.
- Hold the Pair button for three seconds.
- Wait for the connection indicator to blink rapidly.
- Open the host’s Bluetooth device list and select 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X.
- After the host reports that pairing is complete, type in a text field.
Bluetooth connects to only one device
8BitDo’s support FAQ says that only one device can be connected over Bluetooth at a time. When moving from one computer or tablet to another, pair again with the new host instead of assuming both hosts can remain connected. If the keyboard does not appear, turn off Bluetooth on the previously used host or remove the old pairing there, then repeat the six steps above.

The manual describes the procedure above as the initial pairing process. The FAQ’s one-device limitation explains why a keyboard that worked yesterday can appear not to respond after you change hosts: it may still be associated with the earlier Bluetooth connection.
8BitDo keyboard Bluetooth not connecting
Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm the switch is on BT, not 2.4 or OFF.
- Hold Pair for the full three seconds and wait for rapid indicator blinking before opening the host’s device list.
- Select the exact name 8BitDo Retro Keyboard X.
- Disconnect or forget the keyboard on the previous Bluetooth host, because only one Bluetooth device can be connected at a time.
- Check the battery indicator and charge the keyboard if it reports low power.
- If the keyboard has been idle, press a key and attempt pairing again; the device can shut down automatically under the conditions described below.
Do not treat a missing Bluetooth entry as proof that the keyboard is permanently defective. The documented procedure depends on the switch position and the rapid-blink pairing state.
When the keyboard appears to turn off
The indicators provide the quickest power diagnosis:
- Blinking indicator: low battery.
- Breathing indicator: charging.
- Solid indicator: fully charged.
The manual says the keyboard shuts down automatically if it cannot connect within one minute after startup. It also shuts down after 15 minutes without operation once it has connected. This can look like an unresponsive keyboard, especially in 2.4G or Bluetooth mode. Wake it, confirm the switch position, and repeat the relevant connection procedure.

8BitDo Xbox keyboard won’t connect: a complete diagnostic sequence
If you are unsure which branch applies, use this order so that one failed setting does not obscure another.
- Confirm the host. Use Windows 10 version 1903 or later or Android 9.0 or later. Stop if the target is an Xbox console, because this model is not supported there.
- Classify the symptom. Decide whether there is no connection, a power or idle shutdown, missing key input, or only a lighting/software problem.
- Match the switch to the mode. Use OFF for USB, 2.4 for the included adapter, and BT for Bluetooth.
- Repeat the documented setup. USB requires the cable; 2.4G requires the adapter and may require a three-second Pair hold; Bluetooth requires a three-second Pair hold followed by selection of “8BitDo Retro Keyboard X.”
- Read the indicators. Charge when the indicator blinks for low battery. A breathing indicator means charging; solid means fully charged.
- Account for automatic shutdown. A failed one-minute connection attempt or 15 minutes of inactivity after connection can turn the keyboard off. Restart the selected connection procedure.
- Test ordinary typing. Use a plain text field. This distinguishes a host or input problem from an RGB utility problem.
- Try another documented mode. For example, test USB after a failed wireless attempt. A successful alternate mode narrows the problem to the adapter, Bluetooth pairing, wireless power state, or host configuration rather than proving a particular component has failed.
Compare the three connection paths
Choosing a different mode is a useful diagnostic, not just a convenience. USB is the simplest test because it uses the OFF switch position and does not depend on wireless pairing; it also prevents the keyboard from using its automatic shutdown while wired. The 2.4G path depends on two pieces—the keyboard and the included adapter—so both the 2.4 position and adapter connection matter. Bluetooth removes the adapter but adds a pairing step and the one-device limit.

Make one change at a time and test in a plain text field. Changing the switch, pairing state, software lighting controls, and firmware simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which step affected the result.
8BitDo keyboard lights or software not working on Windows 11
Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting can conflict with the keyboard’s own lighting control. This issue concerns RGB control and Ultimate Software V2 behavior; it is not evidence that the same setting repairs ordinary key input.
- Open Ultimate Software V2.
- Set the lighting control mode to 8BitDo RGB.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
- Turn off the option that allows Dynamic Lighting on devices to control lighting.
- Turn off the option that allows compatible foreground apps to control lighting.
- Reopen Ultimate Software V2 and test the lighting controls.
8BitDo’s Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Support Page gives the key instruction: “Ensure the lighting control mode is set to ‘8BitDo RGB’ in Ultimate Software V2.” Apply the Windows settings only when the keyboard types but its lighting or configuration software is unresponsive.
Check firmware carefully
The official support listing showed keyboard firmware version 1.07 for this model. The listing describes earlier changes as optimized input accuracy in v1.07, optimized key-input latency in v1.06, and Windows Dynamic Lighting support over a wired connection in v1.05, configured through Ultimate Software V2.
Before updating, identify the exact model as the Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition. Do not select firmware for another 8BitDo keyboard. Use a wired connection when the update instructions require it, and do not interrupt power during an update. Firmware information can address compatibility or input behavior, but it is not a documented universal fix for every unresponsive report.

First establish that the keyboard connects and that most keys produce input. If the entire keyboard fails in one mode, continue with the connection and power branches rather than replacing a switch.
The Xbox Edition is hot-swappable. 8BitDo says its switches can be replaced with compatible third-party three-pin or five-pin switches. A replacement is relevant only after you have isolated a single-key fault from a connection failure. Check the replacement switch’s exact pin compatibility before installing it, and disconnect the keyboard before handling switches. A switch replacement does not address a keyboard that cannot pair, has no power, or fails across all keys.

Common pitfalls to avoid
- Reading the branding as compatibility: the Xbox button and licensed styling do not change the supported-host list.
- Using the wrong switch position: OFF is the wired position, while 2.4 and BT select separate wireless paths.
- Searching for the wrong Bluetooth name: look specifically for “8BitDo Retro Keyboard X.”
- Assuming Bluetooth multipoint: the FAQ documents one Bluetooth connection, so changing hosts requires pairing again.
- Interpreting a shutdown as a dead battery: a failed one-minute connection or 15 minutes of inactivity can also turn the keyboard off.
- Applying an RGB fix to typing failure: Dynamic Lighting settings address lighting and software control, not a keyboard that produces no key input.
- Installing unrelated firmware: select firmware for the Retro 87 Xbox Edition, not another 8BitDo model.
- Replacing switches too early: a switch can explain one dead key, not a complete connection failure.
What the official documentation does—and does not—establish
The manual and support materials document USB, 2.4G, and Bluetooth setup; the one-device Bluetooth limit; indicator meanings; automatic shutdown behavior; and the Windows 11 lighting setting. They do not publish a complete factory-reset sequence or a comprehensive diagnosis for every possible battery, cable, adapter, host-driver, or internal-hardware failure.
For that reason, avoid unsupported reset combinations or claims that a particular internal part is defective. If the keyboard remains unable to type after you have tested a supported host, checked power, repeated the correct mode procedure, and tried another documented connection mode, contact 8BitDo support with the model name, host operating system, selected mode, indicator behavior, and steps already completed.
What to include in a support request
A concise record helps support reproduce the fault. Include that the device is the 8BitDo Retro 87 Mechanical Keyboard – Xbox Edition, whether the host is Windows 10 (1903) or later or Android 9.0 or later, and whether you tested USB, 2.4G, Bluetooth, or more than one mode. Note the switch position, whether the included adapter was connected, the Bluetooth name you selected, the indicator state, and whether the keyboard works in a plain text field. What does a blinking or breathing indicator mean?
A blinking indicator means low battery, a breathing indicator means charging, and a solid indicator means fully charged.
Why does the keyboard turn itself off?
It can shut down if it fails to connect within one minute after startup, or after 15 minutes without operation once connected. This automatic behavior does not apply while the keyboard is wired.
Why do the keys work but Windows 11 lighting controls do not?
In Ultimate Software V2, set the lighting control mode to “8BitDo RGB.” In Windows 11 Dynamic Lighting, disable both the device-control option and the compatible-foreground-apps option.
Should I replace a switch when one key fails?
Only after confirming that the keyboard connects and the other keys work. The Xbox Edition is hot-swappable and supports compatible third-party three-pin or five-pin switches, but a switch replacement cannot fix a pairing or whole-keyboard failure.
Is there a documented factory reset for this problem?
