The fastest fix is to identify the exact 8BitDo model and select the connection mode it actually supports. “8BitDo keyboard” might mean the Retro Mechanical Keyboard, a controller’s Keyboard mode, or another product; “joystick” may refer to an F30 controller or an Ultimate Bluetooth Controller. Their pairing buttons, switches, reset procedures, and compatible hosts are different.
Find the product name on the underside, packaging, or its 8BitDo support page. Then follow the matching Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, wired USB, reset, or firmware procedure below. Do not apply a button combination from one model to another.
Identify the exact device before changing any settings
Connection troubleshooting starts with the model number, not the symptom. 8BitDo publishes product-specific manuals and firmware notes, and procedures can differ between models and firmware generations. A controller that offers Keyboard mode is not the same product as a mechanical keyboard, even if both can type on a computer.

Run these checks before pairing again
- Charge or power the device. A low battery can make an indicator flash briefly without completing pairing. Connect power or replace batteries according to the model’s instructions.
- Disconnect competing paths. Unplug a 2.4 GHz receiver when testing Bluetooth, and remove the USB cable when testing wireless. For a keyboard, make sure the receiver is attached directly to the host rather than left disconnected.
- Check the physical mode control. The Retro Mechanical Keyboard’s side switch selects Bluetooth, 2.4, or wired operation. A controller may use a different switch or startup combination. Do not assume that turning on the device selects the mode you want.
- Remove a stale host entry. In the computer, phone, tablet, or console Bluetooth settings, forget the old 8BitDo entry when the host shows a saved but unusable pairing. Then restart Bluetooth or the host before attempting a fresh pairing.
- Test one host at a time. Turn off Bluetooth on nearby devices that previously used the 8BitDo product. A device that reconnects to another host can appear to be unavailable on the one you are troubleshooting.
- Use the correct host support. Compatibility is model-specific. The Retro Mechanical Keyboard FAQ lists Windows and Android and requires Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) on the host for Bluetooth operation. That requirement and those operating systems should not be generalized to every 8BitDo controller.
Fix the Retro Mechanical Keyboard
Use this section only if the product is the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. Its three connection paths are independent, so a successful wired test does not automatically repair Bluetooth or 2.4 GHz pairing.
Bluetooth pairing
- Move the keyboard’s mode switch to the Bluetooth position described in its manual.
- Open the host’s Bluetooth settings and remove an old keyboard entry if it is present but will not reconnect.
- Put the keyboard into pairing mode using the exact Pair control and timing shown in the keyboard manual.
- Select the keyboard in the host’s available-device list and wait for the host to report a completed connection.
- Type in a text field to confirm input. If the keyboard appears but does not accept keystrokes, disconnect it from another host and repeat the forget-and-pair process.
Bluetooth pairing requires BLE support on the host for this keyboard. A desktop or adapter that supports only an older Bluetooth profile will not satisfy that requirement; use another supported connection path or a host with BLE.
Re-pair the 2.4 GHz receiver
The receiver must be connected to the host during the re-pairing stage. Follow the manual’s sequence exactly:
- Set the keyboard’s mode switch to 2.4.
- Hold the keyboard’s Pair button for three seconds.
- Release it when the indicator begins blinking rapidly.
- Connect the included or matching 2.4 GHz adapter to the host.
- Wait for the indicator to show a successful link: the manual describes it remaining solid briefly and then switching off.
- Test several keys in a text field or the host’s input screen.
If rapid blinking never starts, verify the switch position and battery or USB power before trying again. If the indicator completes the sequence but the keyboard remains unusable, move the receiver to another host USB port and repeat the pairing process. A receiver that belongs to a different product is not a valid substitute simply because its plug fits.

Test with wired USB
Wired operation separates a possible wireless problem from a possible keyboard or power problem.
- Set the mode switch to OFF, as specified by the Retro Mechanical Keyboard manual for wired use.
- Connect the keyboard to the host USB port.
- Wait for the host to recognize it before pressing keys repeatedly.
- Open a text field and verify that keystrokes arrive consistently.
Use a known-good, data-capable cable only when its connector matches the keyboard and host. Not every USB-C cable carries data, and buying a cable cannot repair a damaged port or electronics. If wired input works while both wireless paths fail, concentrate on mode selection, receiver pairing, BLE compatibility, and host Bluetooth settings. If wired input also fails, try another data-capable cable and host port, then consult the exact model’s support entry.
Fix a controller or joystick that will not pair
“Joystick” is often used for an 8BitDo controller. Controller procedures are not interchangeable with the Retro Mechanical Keyboard’s Pair, Fast key mapping, and Profile controls.
Use the controller’s documented startup mode
Locate the exact controller manual and identify the mode intended for the host: Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, USB, Switch, Windows, Android, or another listed platform. Set any mode switch before pressing Pair. Then remove the old host entry, put the controller into the manual’s pairing state, and select it from the host’s device list.

The official Pro 2 Windows instructions, for example, specify that controller’s own mode-switch and Pair-button procedure. That example demonstrates why a universal “hold these buttons on every 8BitDo joystick” instruction is unsafe. Use the buttons and timing printed for your model.
Ultimate Bluetooth Controller on Nintendo Switch
If the product is an Ultimate Bluetooth Controller and it will not connect to a Switch, its documented recovery path is:
- Set the controller’s mode switch to S.
- Hold Pair for three seconds.
- On the Switch, open Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
- Wait for the controller to appear and complete the on-screen connection.
This is an example for that controller and Switch combination, not a general procedure for every 8BitDo joystick. The same controller also documents USB and 2.4 GHz alternatives, each with its own mode and hardware requirements. If Bluetooth pairing fails repeatedly, test one of those documented alternatives to determine whether the problem is limited to the Switch Bluetooth path.

For an F30 or another F-series product, confirm whether the host expects a controller profile or a keyboard-like input mode. Follow the model’s startup and Pair instructions, then select the device from the host’s Bluetooth or USB interface. Do not use the Retro Mechanical Keyboard’s three-second 2.4 GHz receiver procedure unless the F30 manual explicitly specifies a compatible receiver and sequence.

Controller Keyboard mode
A controller’s Keyboard mode, such as the feature documented for the Micro Bluetooth Gamepad, has a separate supported-device list. If it connects as a gamepad but not as a keyboard, the wireless link may be working and the limitation may be the selected input mode or host support. Switch to Keyboard mode using that controller’s manual, remove the old host entry if necessary, and pair again. Do not diagnose it as a failed mechanical keyboard.
Interpret what each connection test tells you
| Connection method | Checks to perform | What a result suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | Correct model pairing mode, host Bluetooth support, and BLE support where required by the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. | Tests the host’s Bluetooth discovery and pairing path. |
| 2.4 GHz | Correct mode, receiver attached, and the model’s documented re-pair sequence. | Separates receiver pairing and USB-host issues from Bluetooth problems. |
| Wired USB | Correct mode, data-capable cable, suitable port, and time for host recognition. | Shows whether the device can communicate outside its wireless path. |
For example, a Retro Mechanical Keyboard that works over wired USB but not Bluetooth is not proven defective. Its host may lack BLE, its old pairing may be stale, or it may be in the 2.4 position. Conversely, failure over wired USB and both wireless methods makes a mode, power, cable, port, or hardware issue more likely and justifies model-specific support rather than repeated pairing attempts.
When to reset the Retro Mechanical Keyboard
Factory reset is a last resort, not a routine pairing shortcut. On the Retro Mechanical Keyboard, hold Pair, Fast key mapping, and Profile together for five seconds, following the exact manual timing.
This reset clears the keyboard’s Bluetooth pairings, custom profiles, key mappings, swapped keys, and other stored customizations. Record any mappings or profile settings you need before resetting. Afterward, select one connection path, complete its pairing procedure, and recreate custom settings only after basic typing works.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check firmware only for the matching product
The official 8BitDo support hub provides separate product entries for models, manuals, firmware, and update instructions. Some entries document firmware fixes for particular connection or disconnection problems, but that does not establish that every current pairing failure is firmware-related.
- Read the label and identify the exact product and revision.
- Open that product’s support entry and compare its firmware notes with your symptom.
- Read the update requirements, including the required host, cable, receiver, battery level, and mode.
- Back up custom profiles or mappings when the instructions allow it.
- Install only the firmware intended for that exact model and revision.
- After the update, repeat the model’s normal pairing procedure rather than assuming the updater itself creates a connection.
Never install firmware chosen because the product name looks similar. A keyboard, controller, and joystick can have different update packages, and a failed or interrupted update can create a larger problem than the original pairing failure.

| The device never appears in Bluetooth settings | Confirm the exact pairing mode, remove old entries, turn off nearby hosts, and verify host compatibility; check BLE for the Retro Mechanical Keyboard. |
| The device appears but pairing fails | Forget the saved entry, restart the host’s Bluetooth, place the device into its documented pairing state, and try again with only one host nearby. |
| The Retro Keyboard’s 2.4 receiver is not detected | Set the keyboard to 2.4, hold Pair for three seconds until rapid blinking, connect the matching receiver, and wait for the solid-then-off indicator sequence. |
| The keyboard works by Bluetooth but not by receiver | Check that the receiver is connected and repeat the 2.4 GHz re-pair sequence; do not substitute an unrelated adapter. |
| The keyboard works wired but not wirelessly | Use the correct Bluetooth or 2.4 mode, verify BLE or receiver requirements, and remove stale wireless pairings. |
| The controller connects as a gamepad but not as a keyboard | Enable its documented Keyboard mode and confirm that the host appears on that model’s supported-device list. |
| Nothing works after a reset | Verify that the reset belonged to the exact model, then use its support entry for firmware and hardware troubleshooting. |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Using the wrong product instructions: A controller Keyboard mode, F30 Joystick, Ultimate Bluetooth Controller, and Retro Mechanical Keyboard can use different controls.
- Pairing while the wrong mode is selected: The Retro Keyboard can be set for Bluetooth, 2.4, or wired operation; the host cannot complete the intended path if the switch selects another one.
- Assuming every computer supports the same Bluetooth features: The Retro Keyboard’s Bluetooth path requires BLE, and compatibility lists are model-specific.
- Leaving the receiver unplugged: The 2.4 GHz re-pair sequence requires the adapter to be connected after the keyboard begins rapid blinking.
- Resetting too early: The Retro Keyboard reset erases pairings, mappings, swapped keys, and profiles. Try mode, power, host, receiver, cable, and pairing checks first.
- Installing convenient-looking firmware: Firmware must match the exact product and revision. Similar names do not make update files interchangeable.
- Blaming the cable without testing data: A charging-only USB-C cable may power a device without carrying input data; use a known-good data cable appropriate for the model.
When the evidence points to a hardware or support issue
Stop repeating pairing attempts when the device fails on the correct mode, a known-compatible host, and an appropriate alternate connection. For the Retro Mechanical Keyboard, failure in Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, and wired USB after the documented checks indicates that model-specific support should inspect the device, receiver, port, or power system. For a controller, document which host and mode failed, whether the indicator responds to Pair, and whether USB or 2.4 GHz works. Give that information to the support team for the exact product rather than describing it only as an “8BitDo joystick.”
A reliable order of operations
- Read the exact model name from the device, packaging, or official support entry.
- Identify whether you are testing Bluetooth, 2.4 GHz, wired USB, or a controller Keyboard mode.
- Confirm power, mode switch, host compatibility, and receiver or cable connections.
- Forget stale pairings and retry the model-specific pairing procedure on one host.
- Use a second documented connection path as a diagnostic, not as a permanent workaround unless it meets your needs.
- Reset only after recording custom settings and confirming the reset belongs to that model.
- Check firmware on the matching support page, following every stated requirement.
- Escalate with the model, revision, host, mode, indicator behavior, and results of each connection test.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will buying a generic Bluetooth dongle fix an 8BitDo connection problem?
Not necessarily. The Retro Mechanical Keyboard requires BLE for Bluetooth, and each model has its own host requirements. Verify compatibility and try the documented wired or 2.4 GHz path before purchasing an adapter.
Can I use the Retro Mechanical Keyboard reset steps on an 8BitDo controller?
No. The five-second Pair, Fast key mapping, and Profile reset is specific to the Retro Mechanical Keyboard and erases its stored customizations. Controllers require their own manuals.
Why does my 8BitDo device connect but produce the wrong type of input?
A controller may be paired in gamepad mode when you need its Keyboard mode, or the host may select a different profile. Confirm the exact model’s input mode and supported-device list, then pair again in that mode.
