When Among the Trolls will not start, closes immediately, freezes while loading, or becomes unstable after a settings change, use a controlled sequence rather than one supposed universal fix: bring the game, Steam, Windows, and graphics driver up to date; confirm the PC meets the published requirements; verify the installation; temporarily remove background-software conflicts; then follow the symptom-specific checks below. Steam notes that launch failures can result from many different hardware and software configurations, so the useful fix depends on when the failure occurs.
Identify exactly when Among the Trolls fails
Write down the first visible failure before changing anything. “It crashes” can describe several different problems that need different checks. Use the closest symptom in this table as your starting branch.

Do not make several changes at once. Test the game after each major step so you know which change affected the result and can restore software that was disabled for testing.

Compare your system with the Steam listing before spending time on advanced troubleshooting. A machine below the minimum can fail to launch or become unstable even when the installation is intact.

To check the basics in Windows, open Settings > System > About for the Windows edition, processor, and installed RAM. Open Settings > System > Storage to confirm that at least 30 GB is available on the installation drive. Use dxdiag from the Start menu to view DirectX information and the display adapter. Compare the model names, not just the amount of video memory.
Meeting the minimum does not guarantee identical performance across every configuration. The listing’s SSD preference is especially relevant to long loads and hitching: a hard-drive installation is worth investigating when loading is the symptom, but the requirement does not establish that an SSD is required for the game to launch.
Update the game, Steam, Windows, and graphics driver
Use current software before attempting invasive changes. The Steam Community feed has documented official demo hotfixes for general performance and stability, a resolution-settings confirmation bug, and an AMD-GPU display/HUD issue. Those notes are useful evidence that an old build can behave differently, but they are demo notes rather than a complete crash database for every release.

In Steam, open Library, select the game, and wait for any queued download to finish. If an update is paused, resume it and allow Steam to complete the installation before launching.
- Update Steam. Open the Steam menu and choose Check for Steam Client Updates if that option is available, then restart the client when prompted.
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart Windows. Steam’s launch guidance specifically includes updating Windows.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver for your NVIDIA or AMD GPU from the manufacturer’s normal update channel, then restart Windows. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, record that version for later reporting rather than repeatedly installing unrelated versions.
- Test once with unchanged display settings. After the updates, launch the game without repeatedly switching resolution or other display options. This isolates the previously documented resolution-confirmation issue from unrelated settings changes.
If the game now launches, change one setting at a time and keep the working configuration recorded. If it still fails, continue to file verification instead of assuming that another graphics setting will solve it.

Verify the Steam installation
Interrupted downloads, an update that did not finish correctly, or a damaged file can prevent a game from starting. Steam Support lists file-integrity verification as a launch troubleshooting step.
- Open Steam > Library and right-click Among the Trolls.
- Choose Properties, then open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to complete the scan and replace any file it reports as missing or damaged.
- Restart Steam and test the game before changing additional settings.
Verification is particularly appropriate after an interrupted download, a major game update, or a crash during patching. It checks the installation managed by Steam; it does not update Windows, repair a failing drive, or correct an incompatible driver.
Remove background-software and overlay conflicts temporarily
Steam recommends disabling non-essential software because launch failures can arise from the many combinations of programs, drivers, and hardware used by players. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to leave security software disabled permanently.

- Disable the Steam overlay for this test by opening the game’s Properties, selecting General, and clearing Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Disable other overlays one at a time in the software that provides them, if you use any.
- Restart Windows so programs that start automatically are not still attached to the game.
- Launch Among the Trolls and record whether the timing changes.
Keep a list of everything you disabled. If the game becomes stable, restore items one at a time and test after each restoration. That identifies the conflicting program without leaving unrelated software turned off.

Fix an immediate crash or a return to Steam
An immediate return to the Steam client is the classic launch-failure pattern. Start with the highest-value checks rather than deleting files or changing advanced Windows settings.
- Confirm Windows 10 Home 64-bit or a later supported Windows installation, 16 GB or more of RAM, a processor and GPU at least comparable to the published minimums, DirectX 12 support, and 30 GB of free space.
- Finish all game, Steam, Windows, and graphics-driver updates.
- Verify the integrity of the installed files.
- Temporarily remove non-essential overlays and background programs.
- Restart Windows and test from a fresh Steam session.
If the computer is below the minimum GPU, memory, or processor class, software troubleshooting cannot turn it into a supported configuration. If it is within range and the same immediate crash persists, note the exact time of failure and continue collecting the evidence described in the escalation section.
Fix a loading-screen freeze
A loading freeze calls for storage and installation checks in addition to the normal launch sequence.
Confirm free space on the game drive
Open Settings > System > Storage and check the drive that contains the Steam library. Keep at least the published 30 GB available requirement free; additional working room can also help Windows and Steam complete updates without interruption, although no extra amount is specified for this game.

Check the drive and installation location
If the game is on a mechanical hard drive, test whether moving it to a healthy SSD changes loading behavior. The Steam listing marks an SSD as preferred, not mandatory, so treat this as a performance investigation rather than a guaranteed crash cure. Do not move the installation to a drive that is reporting errors or disconnecting.
Verify files and retest without overlays
Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files procedure, restart the client, and test with non-essential overlays disabled. If the freeze occurs at the same point every time, record that location and the elapsed time; repeatable timing is useful when reporting the problem.

The official demo hotfix notes include a fix for a resolution-settings confirmation-button problem. If the crash or lockup began after changing resolution, first update Among the Trolls and the graphics driver, then restart Windows. Avoid cycling through multiple resolutions while the old build is installed.
After updating, launch with the last known working display configuration if the game preserves it. Change only the resolution, apply it, and wait for the confirmation prompt before making another change. If the screen becomes unusable, close the game normally if possible and return to Steam’s file verification and support channels rather than repeatedly forcing new settings.

Fix broken HUD or cutscene visuals on an AMD GPU
The official demo feed records an AMD-GPU display/HUD fix. This symptom is therefore a strong reason to check the installed game build and AMD driver before trying unrelated Windows changes.
- Allow every pending Among the Trolls update to finish.
- Install the current AMD graphics driver for your GPU and restart Windows.
- Verify the Steam files.
- Test with overlays and monitoring utilities disabled.
If the HUD or cutscene problem remains, record the exact GPU model, driver version, game build shown by Steam, and the scene in which the visual failure appears. The hotfix note does not establish that every AMD visual issue has the same cause.
Investigate random in-game freezes
When the game starts but freezes unpredictably, collect observations instead of assuming that one component is responsible. During a test session, note whether the freeze follows a particular area, loading transition, display change, or overlay activity.

- Check CPU and GPU temperatures with the monitoring software you normally use, but disable its overlay while testing if possible.
- Watch memory use and note whether the system approaches or exceeds the available 16 GB minimum.
- Confirm that the graphics driver is current and that Windows has been restarted after the update.
- Verify the game files after any interrupted update.
- Test once with non-essential background software closed.
- Record whether the installation is on an SSD or hard drive and whether the drive shows other signs of slowness.
These observations help separate a repeatable game symptom from a broader system problem. The available official guidance does not name one universal cause for random freezes, so avoid presenting any single observation as a confirmed diagnosis.
What to do when none of the standard steps work
Escalate with a concise, reproducible report through the official game community or support channels. Include information that allows another person to understand the configuration and the exact point of failure.
- The symptom category: no window, immediate return to Steam, loading-screen freeze, resolution-related crash, AMD display/HUD issue, or random in-game freeze.
- When it began, including whether it followed a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update.
- Windows edition and version.
- CPU model, total RAM, GPU model, and whether the game is installed on an SSD or hard drive.
- GPU-driver version and the date it was installed.
- Available free space on the Steam library drive.
- Whether Steam file verification found or replaced anything.
- Which overlays or non-essential programs were disabled and whether that changed the result.
- The exact step at which the failure occurs and whether it reproduces every time.
Steam Support explains that “Games may not launch for a number of reasons, most of which are hard to diagnose due to the number of unique hardware and software configurations users may have.” A detailed configuration and a repeatable symptom are more useful than a claim that the game simply “doesn’t work.” Do not describe an unconfirmed workaround as a developer fix; identify it as a test and include the result.
Safe order of operations
For most players, the shortest defensible path is:
- Capture the symptom and avoid changing several settings at once.
- Compare the PC with the published minimum and recommended specifications.
- Update Among the Trolls, Steam, Windows, and the GPU driver.
- Verify the Steam installation.
- Disable non-essential software and overlays for one controlled test.
- Follow the branch for immediate launch failure, loading freeze, resolution crash, AMD visual issue, or random in-game freeze.
- Collect the configuration and test results and report the remaining failure through the official channels.
This order addresses the documented causes first while preserving a clear record of what changed. It also avoids treating an SSD preference, a demo hotfix, or a single driver observation as proof of a universal solution.
