If Alexa isn’t responding to your voice on a Fire tablet, first check that you’re using the main profile and that Alexa Hands-Free is enabled. Then test with the screen awake, check the Wi-Fi connection, and restart the tablet. The steps below help separate a disabled setting or network problem from an issue that needs model-specific support.
1. Check the tablet model and active profile
Alexa features vary by Fire tablet model and generation. Find your model under Settings > Device Options > Device Model or About Fire Tablet. You can also check it in Amazon’s Manage Your Devices.
Amazon lists hands-free support for Fire HD 10 (7th generation), Fire HD 8 (8th generation), Fire 7 (9th generation), Fire HD 10 (9th generation), Fire HD 8 and HD 8 Plus (10th generation), Fire HD 10 (11th generation), Fire 7 (12th generation), Fire HD 8 and HD 8 Plus (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), and Fire HD 10 (13th generation). 2. Turn Alexa Hands-Free back on
Swipe down from the top of the home screen and look for the Alexa Hands-Free icon in Quick Actions. Select it to enable the feature. You can also check Settings > Alexa > Hands-Free Mode. Amazon notes that Quick Actions indicates when hands-free is off; while it is disabled, the tablet will not respond to the wake word.
As a separate test, press and hold the Home button to access Alexa outside Show Mode. If button activation works but saying the wake word does not, the issue is more likely related to hands-free being off, wake-word detection conditions, or model support than Alexa being entirely unavailable. That is a troubleshooting clue, not a diagnosis from Amazon.

3. Test the wake word with the screen on
Wake-word detection conditions can depend on the model and power state. Amazon says certain Fire tablets may not detect the wake word when the screen is off and the tablet is not connected to power. Try a voice request with the screen awake; if needed, repeat while the tablet is plugged in.

Amazon describes this as an indication that the request is streaming. If the line appears but you do not get the expected response, the wake word was likely detected, so continue with the network checks.

4. Check Wi-Fi and isolate the network
- Make sure Airplane mode is off and the tablet is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network.
- Check whether other devices can access the internet on that network. Move the tablet closer to the router and reduce possible interference.
- Restart both the tablet and the router, wait two minutes, then try Alexa again.
- Connect the tablet to a smartphone hotspot and test a request. Amazon says that if Alexa works on the hotspot, the problem is with the original network rather than the tablet.
If several devices cannot connect to the original network, Amazon recommends contacting your internet service provider. Its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance covers these checks.
5. Restart the tablet and check for software updates
Restart
Hold the power button for up to three seconds until the shutdown prompt appears, then select OK. After the tablet shuts down, hold the power button for two to three seconds to turn it on again. Amazon recommends rebooting as a way to address intermittent issues.

Check for an update
Check whether a newer Fire tablet software version is available for your exact model, then install it if offered. Amazon includes update checks in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting sequence; an update is a sensible maintenance step, not a guaranteed Alexa fix.

6. Keep Show Mode separate from Hands-Free
Show Mode is distinct from Alexa Hands-Free, so compatibility with one does not establish compatibility with the other. Amazon lists Show Mode as incompatible with Fire 7 (7th, 9th, and 12th generations), Fire HD 8 (12th generation), Fire Max 11 (13th generation), and Fire HD 10 (13th generation). Its compatibility guidance covers Alexa and Show Mode on Fire tablets.

If the basic profile, setting, power, restart, update, and network checks do not restore voice response, contact Amazon support with the model and generation. Amazon’s published instructions do not provide a hardware microphone repair workflow, so avoid treating a factory reset or hardware repair as the next automatic step.
