The message is a symptom, not a single diagnosis. Akismet must make an outbound HTTPS request from your WordPress server to rest.akismet.com; the request also has to contain a valid API key and your site’s complete front-page URL. A DNS, firewall, proxy, TLS, hosting-egress, key, URL, software, or subscription problem can therefore produce the same notice.
Start by recording the exact status or PHP/cURL text, then test the request path from the WordPress host. Correct the key and URL, prove DNS and TCP 443/TLS connectivity, update compatible software, and only then investigate plan or usage limits. The sequence below separates a network failure from a verification or account failure instead of treating every error as a bad key.

Akismet sends comments and supported contact-form submissions from your WordPress installation to its remote spam database. Activation asks for an Akismet.com API key; personal keys are free, while commercial sites use paid subscriptions, according to the WordPress.org plugin listing.
Key verification is a server-side POST to https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key. The request includes api_key and the site’s full front-page URL. Akismet documents that a successful call returns valid. An invalid response can include the X-akismet-debug-help header, while API failures may identify themselves with X-akismet-alert-code and X-akismet-alert-msg headers. Those details tell you whether WordPress reached Akismet and received a response, or whether the request failed earlier.
| Where the request fails | Typical evidence | Most likely area to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Before DNS resolution | Could not resolve host, DNS timeout, or an empty lookup | Hosting DNS resolver, local DNS policy, or a temporary DNS outage |
| After DNS but before TCP 443 | Connection timed out, refused, or blocked | Host firewall, outbound-egress policy, proxy requirement, or security plugin |
| During TLS | Certificate, handshake, protocol, or cURL SSL error | Old runtime, incorrect system clock, TLS inspection, or certificate chain |
| After an HTTP response | valid, an invalid-key result, HTTP status, or Akismet alert header |
API key, canonical URL, account plan, usage, or request data |
Do not assume that “can’t connect” proves Akismet is unavailable. The decisive question is whether the WordPress server can resolve and establish HTTPS to the documented endpoint.
1. Capture the exact failure before changing settings
Make a copy of the notice and its time. A generic banner can hide the information needed by a host or Akismet support agent.
- Open Dashboard → Settings → Akismet Anti-Spam (the menu may appear as Akismet in some releases).
- Copy the complete error, including an HTTP status, PHP or cURL wording, and any request identifier.
- Look for
X-akismet-alert-code,X-akismet-alert-msg, orX-akismet-debug-helpvalues in a server log, HTTP trace, or support diagnostic. Akismet’s error documentation says an API response may include an error code in theX-akismet-alert-codeheader; do not discard it. - Record the site’s public front-page URL, the WordPress and PHP versions, the Akismet version, and whether the failure occurs on production, staging, or both.
Never paste a live API key into a public ticket, screenshot, or forum post. Redact the key while preserving the error text and timestamps.
2. Recheck the API key and canonical site URL
Confirm the key in Akismet settings
- Go to Dashboard → Settings → Akismet Anti-Spam.
- Enter the key again exactly as issued. Remove leading or trailing spaces introduced by copying, and do not include quotation marks.
- Save or verify the key, then note whether Akismet returns
valid, an invalid-key response, or a connection error.
A response that reaches Akismet but says the key is invalid is a different problem from a timeout. The documented verification call returns valid when the key is valid; an invalid result can include debugging guidance in X-akismet-debug-help. Follow that guidance rather than repeatedly regenerating keys.

Make the URL match the actual front page
Akismet verification requires the site’s complete front-page URL, including its scheme. Check Settings → General and compare WordPress Address (URL), Site Address (URL), and the URL visitors use. Use the canonical value with https:// or http:// as appropriate; do not submit only a hostname such as example.com.
- Use the same hostname that the site officially redirects to, including or excluding
wwwaccording to that canonical redirect. - Do not use a staging hostname when verifying the production installation, or vice versa.
- Check for an HTTP-to-HTTPS migration, a changed domain, or a reverse-proxy setup that leaves WordPress believing the scheme is
http://. - If the site is behind a proxy or load balancer, confirm that its forwarded HTTPS settings make WordPress generate the public HTTPS URL.
Retry once after correcting the URL and key. If the response is still a connection error, stop changing credentials and test the server’s network path.
3. Test DNS and outbound HTTPS from the WordPress host
Testing from a laptop only proves that your laptop can reach Akismet. The request originates on the web server, so run these checks through hosting SSH, a server console, or with your provider’s assistance. Exact commands vary by operating system and hosting plan.
Rank #3
Check DNS resolution
dig rest.akismet.com
nslookup rest.akismet.com
A successful lookup should return an address and complete promptly. “Servfail,” “NXDOMAIN,” an empty answer, or a timeout indicates a resolver or DNS-policy problem before Akismet can see the request. Ask the host whether its resolver blocks external lookups, and compare the result with a known-good resolver only as a diagnostic—not as a permanent change without the host’s approval.
Check TCP 443 and the TLS handshake
curl -Iv --connect-timeout 10 https://rest.akismet.com/1.1/verify-key
openssl s_client -connect rest.akismet.com:443 -servername rest.akismet.com
The first command is a connectivity probe; it is not a key-verification request because it does not submit the required POST fields. You are looking for a completed connection and TLS negotiation, not a particular application response. The OpenSSL command can reveal certificate-chain, protocol, or handshake errors. A timeout or refusal points to outbound filtering, while a certificate or protocol error points to TLS, inspection, or an outdated runtime.
Inspect controls that can block PHP requests
- Host firewall or egress policy: some managed hosts permit inbound web traffic but restrict outbound connections. Ask whether TCP 443 from the PHP worker is allowed to
rest.akismet.com. - Proxy settings: a corporate or hosting proxy may be mandatory. Confirm the proxy hostname, port, authentication, and whether PHP/cURL is configured to use it.
- Security plugins and web application firewalls: review outbound-request rules, not just rules for visitors. Temporarily test with a documented, reversible exception rather than disabling protection on a production site.
- TLS inspection: an inspection device can replace Akismet’s certificate. Its trusted root must be installed correctly, and the inspection service must support the TLS versions used by the PHP runtime.
- System clock: an incorrect server date can make otherwise valid certificates appear expired or not yet valid.
Give your host the exact command output and timestamp. A provider can then distinguish a blocked destination from a PHP certificate problem instead of simply resetting the plugin.
4. Compare production, staging, and another network
Run the same DNS and HTTPS tests from a second environment when possible. For example, compare the production host with a staging host on the same provider, or ask support to run the probe from another data center.
| Comparison result | What it suggests | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Both environments fail DNS | A shared resolver problem, Akismet-side DNS issue, or broad policy block | Give both outputs to the host and check Akismet status or support channels |
| Only production fails | Production firewall, egress rule, proxy, PHP pool, or security plugin differs | Compare server policies and runtime configuration line by line |
| Only staging fails | Staging may have restricted outbound traffic or an incomplete TLS setup | Fix staging policy or verify the key against the intended environment |
| Server succeeds but an administrator’s browser fails | Local browser, VPN, or office network issue rather than Akismet’s server path | Use the server-side result; test the browser network separately |
| Every environment reaches Akismet but rejects the key | Credential, URL, account, or usage issue | Review the key, canonical URL, and subscription below |
This comparison prevents a common mistake: changing a valid key when the real difference is an outbound rule on one host.
5. Check WordPress, PHP, and Akismet compatibility
The current WordPress.org listing shows Akismet 5.7.2, requiring WordPress 5.8 or newer and PHP 7.2 or newer at the time of access on 2026-10-15. Confirm the listing before updating because versions and requirements can change: Akismet on WordPress.org.
Best Value
- Back up the database and files, or confirm your host’s restorable backup.
- Check Dashboard → Updates and note the installed WordPress, PHP, and Akismet versions.
- Update WordPress and Akismet only when the server meets the published requirements. If PHP is below 7.2, ask the host for a supported PHP upgrade before updating the plugin.
- Clear any persistent object cache after the update, then re-open Akismet settings and verify again.
- If the problem began immediately after an update, review the PHP error log and test on a staging copy. Do not downgrade blindly; identify the compatibility error and use a supported version.
Akismet’s 5.6 changelog notes improved setup-error explanations and usage-limit messaging. Updating can therefore expose a more specific reason, but it cannot repair a firewall or DNS block.
6. Verify the plan and usage match the site
Personal protection, commercial protection, multisite, and high-volume installations do not necessarily use the same subscription. Akismet describes Personal separately from Pro for professional or commercial sites, Business for large networks and multisite, and Enterprise for tailored large organizations. A commercial site using a personal arrangement, or a network exceeding its allowance, may reach Akismet successfully yet fail authorization or usage checks.
| Plan or category | Published positioning | Published figures or limits |
|---|---|---|
| Personal | For personal sites; personal API keys are free | Price and usage allowance can change; verify in the account |
| Pro | For professional or commercial sites | US$9.95 per month billed yearly, one site, 500 spam calls per month, on the pricing page accessed 2026-10-15 |
| Business | For large networks and multisite | US$49.95 per month billed yearly, unlimited sites, 5,000 monthly spam checks, on the same date |
| Enterprise | Tailored plans for large organizations | Not stated; obtain current terms from Akismet |
These figures are not permanent quotations. Check the account and the current Akismet pricing page before purchasing or changing a plan. If the site is commercial, multisite, or receiving unusually high comment volume, confirm that its subscription and monthly checks fit its actual use.
7. Match the response to the correct fix
| Observed result | Interpretation | Fix path |
|---|---|---|
| No DNS result | The host cannot find rest.akismet.com |
Repair resolver configuration or remove the host’s DNS restriction |
| DNS succeeds, TCP 443 times out | Outbound traffic is filtered or a proxy is required | Permit the destination, configure the proxy, or ask the host to change egress policy |
| TLS certificate or handshake error | The connection reaches a TLS layer but cannot establish trust | Update PHP/OpenSSL and CA certificates; remove or correctly configure TLS inspection |
| HTTP response says key is invalid | Akismet received the request and rejected credentials or associated data | Re-enter the key, correct the complete site URL, and use any debug-help guidance |
| HTTP response includes an alert code or message | Akismet supplied an application-level error | Preserve the code and message and follow the documented account or request correction |
| Works on one host but not another | Environment-specific policy or runtime difference | Compare DNS, firewall, proxy, PHP, CA bundle, and security-plugin settings |
| Verification works but spam checks later stop | Runtime, usage, plan, or outbound rules may have changed after setup | Check current logs, monthly usage, subscription status, and scheduled-task behavior |
8. Escalate with evidence that identifies the failing layer
Contact hosting support first when DNS, TCP 443, proxy, firewall, or TLS tests fail. Contact Akismet support when the server reaches the endpoint and returns a key, account, usage, or alert response. Include:
- The exact WordPress/Akismet notice and its UTC timestamp.
- WordPress, PHP, Akismet, and hosting-environment versions.
- The complete canonical site URL, with the API key redacted.
- DNS output for
rest.akismet.com. - The outbound HTTPS result, including HTTP status or TLS error.
- Any
X-akismet-alert-code,X-akismet-alert-msg, orX-akismet-debug-helpvalues. - Whether production, staging, another network, or another site on the same host behaves differently.
- The plan category and relevant usage, without exposing payment details or the secret key.
Do not state that Akismet is down or that the key is defective until these details support that conclusion. The documented endpoint and response headers provide a reproducible boundary between a transport failure and an application decision.

Prevent the error from returning
- Keep WordPress, PHP, Akismet, OpenSSL, and the server CA bundle within supported versions.
- Document the approved outbound destination and TCP 443 policy for the production PHP workers.
- Monitor DNS and TLS failures separately from HTTP application errors.
- Record the canonical site URL whenever a domain, HTTPS certificate, proxy, or redirect changes.
- Review Akismet plan and usage before launching a commercial site, multisite, or high-volume campaign.
- Keep a redacted copy of successful verification output and the server environment so a later failure can be compared quickly.
Bottom line
Fix the error by locating the failed layer: verify the complete site URL and API key, prove that the WordPress server resolves rest.akismet.com and can negotiate HTTPS on TCP 443, then bring the software stack and subscription within Akismet’s published requirements. The exact status, network result, and Akismet headers—not the generic banner—determine the remedy.
