If Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on AirPods 4 is not working, first connect and wear the earbuds, then explicitly choose Noise Cancellation. Do not leave Adaptive Audio selected if you expect steady noise reduction. Next update the connected Apple device and AirPods firmware, check that the external microphones are unobstructed, and clean the specified meshes only when the symptoms include lost bass or more background sound. If ANC still cannot be enabled or behaves incorrectly, reset AirPods 4 using the case’s double-tap sequence. Persistent problems after those steps require Apple service.
This procedure applies to AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, not the standard AirPods 4 model. Apple’s documented guidance is available in its support article on ANC problems on AirPods; the steps below put those checks in the quickest order for diagnosing a mode-selection, software, obstruction, cleaning, or hardware problem.
Start with the fastest checks
ANC can seem ineffective when it is simply not the selected listening mode. Before changing settings or cleaning anything, confirm that the earbuds are the ANC variant, connected to the device you are using, and being worn in both ears.
| What you notice | Most appropriate next check | Relative effort |
|---|---|---|
| ANC appears off or cannot be selected | Choose Noise Cancellation directly and check that Adaptive Audio is not active | Lowest |
| ANC behavior changed after an update or long period unused | Update the connected device and allow AirPods firmware to install | Low |
| High-pitched squeal, chirp, feedback, or other odd audio | Inspect the external microphones for anything covering them | Low |
| Less bass and more outside sound while ANC is selected | Follow Apple’s AirPods 4 mesh-cleaning procedure | Moderate; drying takes at least two hours |
| Settings and cleaning do not restore ANC | Reset AirPods 4 from the front of the case, then reconnect | Moderate |
| ANC remains faulty after a reset | Arrange service with Apple | Requires assessment |
Work through the checks in that order. Each one addresses a different failure source, so jumping straight to a reset can erase a pairing state without correcting a selected-mode or blocked-microphone issue.

1. Confirm you have AirPods 4 with ANC and a live connection
Identify the correct model
There are two AirPods 4 variants. Only the version sold with Active Noise Cancellation has an ANC listening mode. If your model is the standard AirPods 4, Noise Cancellation will not be available, and the troubleshooting steps for ANC do not apply.
Do not use the presence of an AirPods 4 name alone as proof that ANC is included. The model variant determines whether the Noise Cancellation control should appear. If it is missing, verify the product version and Bluetooth connection before assuming a hardware failure.
Make sure the earbuds are connected and worn
- Place both AirPods in your ears.
- Check the Bluetooth connection on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you are using.
- Keep the device and AirPods together while testing.
Test in a consistent sound environment, such as near a fan or steady road noise. A changing environment makes it harder to tell whether Adaptive Audio is altering the amount of outside sound admitted. Wearing both earbuds also avoids mistaking an ear-detection or fit change for an ANC fault.
2. Select Noise Cancellation explicitly
Do not judge ANC only by how quiet the room seems. Verify the mode shown by the operating system.
On iPhone or iPad
- Connect and wear the AirPods.
- Open Control Centre.
- Touch and hold the volume slider.
- Select Noise Cancellation.
Pressing and holding the stem of an AirPod also cycles through listening modes. The Control Centre method is preferable for diagnosis because it displays the mode you selected instead of making you infer it from a sound change.
Check the mode after switching
Play a steady external sound and switch away from Noise Cancellation, then back to it. If the mode changes in Control Centre but the acoustic result does not, continue with software, microphone, cleaning, and reset checks. If Noise Cancellation is not offered at all, recheck the model and connection before proceeding.
Mode selection is the quickest and lowest-effort check, so repeat it after every later step. A reset or firmware update can restore a connection but does not help if the listening mode is still set incorrectly.

Adaptive Audio adjusts noise control in response to the surroundings. It can intentionally allow more outside sound than a fixed Noise Cancellation setting, which may be mistaken for a failed ANC system.
Choose Noise Cancellation directly rather than Adaptive Audio, then test again in the same environment. Adaptive Audio is not a fault by itself; it is a different listening behavior. The relevant Apple explanation of listening modes is in Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency modes for AirPods.

- CLEANER SOUND & BETTER LISTENING EXPERIENCE: Regular cleaning helps keep earbuds looking clean and supports a more comfortable listening experience. A practical accessory for AirPods users, students, commuters, travelers, and tech lovers.
If outside sound changes as you move between quiet and noisy locations while Adaptive Audio is selected, that behavior is expected. Compare the earbuds only after selecting fixed Noise Cancellation. This distinction prevents an intentional adjustment from being treated as intermittent ANC.
4. Update the device software and check AirPods firmware
Keep the connected Apple device current
Apple advises using current software on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to the AirPods. Install any available operating-system update, restart the device if the update requests it, reconnect the AirPods, and test Noise Cancellation again.
Check the installed AirPods firmware
On a paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the information button next to the AirPods, and look for the firmware version. The Apple firmware page accessed on October 13, 2026 listed 9A348 for AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a time-sensitive version identifier, not a permanent requirement; compare your version with Apple’s current listing at About firmware updates for AirPods.
Firmware numbers identify installed software; they do not measure ANC strength or guarantee a repair. Do not infer that a lower-looking number proves the microphones or speakers have failed. Compare the displayed version with Apple’s current AirPods 4 with ANC entry.
Give an automatic firmware update the required conditions
AirPods firmware updates automatically when the earbuds are charging in their case and within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device. Leave them in those conditions for at least 30 minutes, then check the version again. There is no manual update button in the documented process.
If the firmware version does not change, repeat the charging-and-range setup before treating the problem as a hardware failure. A current version does not prove that every ANC fault is fixed, but it removes an outdated-firmware variable from the diagnosis. Keep the case closed while charging and avoid moving the AirPods out of Bluetooth range during the waiting period.

AirPods ANC relies on microphones that listen to outside sound. Apple warns that covering the external microphones can produce temporary high-pitched squeals, chirps, feedback, or other audio-performance problems.
What to inspect
- Look for lint, debris, skin oil, or residue over the microphone openings.
- Check whether a case, film, adhesive, or accessory is covering a microphone.
- Remove anything that physically blocks an opening before testing again.
Inspect both earbuds under good light and compare them with each other. A blockage on one side can make the problem sound uneven even when the mode indicator says Noise Cancellation. Remove an accessory rather than trying to compensate with another listening mode.
Do not poke into the openings or use sharp tools. If the symptoms are feedback or chirping rather than simply weak noise reduction, microphone obstruction is a particularly relevant check. After clearing an obvious obstruction, reconnect and retest before moving to the more involved cleaning or reset steps.

6. Clean the AirPods 4 meshes only when the symptoms fit
Apple specifically connects reduced bass or increased background sound while ANC is enabled with a possible need to clean the AirPods 4 meshes. Cleaning is not a general cure for every ANC complaint, and it should not be the first response to a mode-selection problem.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse Apple’s AirPods 4 procedure
AirPods 4 have particular mesh areas identified for cleaning. Follow Apple’s illustrated instructions in How to clean your AirPods and clean only the encircled meshes shown there. Apple’s procedure uses suitable micellar water and a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, followed by rinsing with distilled water and at least two hours of drying.
Apple’s article names the Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit as an optional way to obtain suitable cleaning materials. It is not a guaranteed ANC repair, and the kit does not replace Apple’s mesh locations, liquid restrictions, or drying time.
Important restrictions
- Do not clean areas Apple does not identify for this process.
- Do not run the earbuds under water.
- Do not use sharp, abrasive, or forceful tools.
- Do not put the AirPods back in the case or ears until they have dried for the full period specified by Apple.
After drying, reconnect the AirPods, select Noise Cancellation, and test for the same bass and background-sound symptoms. If cleaning does not resolve them, Apple’s cleaning guidance directs you to seek service rather than repeating increasingly aggressive cleaning. Cleaning is therefore a moderate-effort step with a required waiting period, not a quick substitute for selecting the right mode.
7. Reset AirPods 4 with the case-front double-tap sequence
Resetting is the software recovery step after mode selection, updates, microphone inspection, and appropriate cleaning. AirPods 4 reset differently from older AirPods cases: use the front-of-case tap sequence, not an older setup-button procedure.
Forget the existing Bluetooth pairing
- Put both AirPods in the charging case and close the lid.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- On the paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- If the AirPods are listed, tap the information button and choose Forget This Device.
Start the AirPods 4 reset
- Open the case lid with the AirPods inside.
- Double-tap the front of the case while the status light is on.
- When the light flashes white, double-tap the front again.
- When the light flashes faster, double-tap the front a third time.
- Wait for the light to flash amber followed by white. That sequence confirms the reset.
Apple documents this AirPods 4 method in How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro. Timing matters: complete each pair of taps in response to the light state shown by the case. Do not substitute the single setup-button hold used by some older AirPods cases.
Reconnect and retest
Keep the case open near the iPhone or iPad and follow the on-screen connection prompts. Once connected, wear both earbuds, select Noise Cancellation in Control Centre, and test again. A reset removes the previous pairing state; it does not repair a blocked microphone or a physical component. If the reset confirmation never reaches amber followed by white, repeat the sequence carefully once; persistent failure is a reason to seek service.
8. Know when self-help is finished
Arrange Apple service if ANC still cannot be selected or remains faulty after the documented mode, software, microphone, cleaning, and reset checks. Apple also recommends service when its cleaning procedure does not solve the problem.

- Noise Cancellation remains unavailable after a successful reset and reconnection.
- ANC is selectable but produces persistent feedback, squealing, or abnormal audio after microphone openings are clear.
- Reduced bass or increased background sound continues after the specified meshes were cleaned and fully dried.
- The AirPods repeatedly lose their connection or fail to complete the reset confirmation sequence.
A service assessment is required to determine whether the cause is a component fault or another issue. Apple’s published troubleshooting does not establish a universal repair price or guarantee that every fault can be fixed at home. Do not rely on an advertised price for another model or assume that a cleaning kit, replacement accessory, or reset will eliminate a hardware charge.
Use this decision path for a quick diagnosis
- Is the model AirPods 4 with ANC? If not, ANC controls are not applicable. If yes, continue.
- Is Noise Cancellation visibly selected? If no, choose it in Control Centre. If Adaptive Audio is selected, switch to Noise Cancellation.
- Are the device software and firmware current? Update the connected device, place the AirPods in their charging case near a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device for at least 30 minutes, and recheck firmware.
- Are microphones or accessories blocking openings? Remove the obstruction without inserting tools.
- Do you have reduced bass or more background sound with ANC enabled? Follow Apple’s AirPods 4 mesh-cleaning instructions and allow the required drying time.
- Does ANC still malfunction? Perform the AirPods 4 case-front reset and reconnect.
- Did the reset fail to restore ANC? Stop troubleshooting at home and arrange service.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Following instructions for the standard AirPods 4 when the earbuds are the ANC model, or assuming the standard model has an ANC switch.
- Leaving Adaptive Audio selected while expecting the steady reduction provided by Noise Cancellation.
- Using the amount of perceived quiet as the only proof of the active mode instead of checking the displayed listening-mode setting.
- Assuming a firmware number is permanent. AirPods firmware changes, so use Apple’s live firmware page rather than relying on an old version list.
- Cleaning every visible opening, rinsing the earbuds under a tap, or using a sharp object. Apple’s AirPods 4 procedure is limited to the specified meshes and includes a controlled drying period.
- Using the older setup-button reset instructions. AirPods 4 use the sequence of three front-of-case double-taps followed by the amber-and-white confirmation.
- Continuing to repeat resets when the documented steps have failed. At that point, Apple service is the appropriate next action.
What each fix can and cannot tell you
A successful mode change shows that the control is available; it does not prove that every microphone is operating normally. A current firmware version removes an outdated-software variable but does not rule out a physical fault. Clearing a microphone opening may stop feedback without restoring bass loss caused by a separate mesh issue. Cleaning can address the symptom pattern Apple identifies, but it must be followed by complete drying. A reset restores pairing and software state, yet it cannot repair damaged hardware. Treat each result as a diagnostic clue and continue only to the next documented step.

Apple’s page accessed on October 13, 2026 listed version 9A348 for AirPods 4 with ANC. Firmware changes over time, so check Apple’s current firmware list rather than treating that identifier as permanent.
Can I manually install an AirPods firmware update?
Apple’s documented process is automatic. Put the AirPods in their charging case, keep them charging and within Bluetooth range of a Wi-Fi-connected Apple device for at least 30 minutes, then check the version in Settings > Bluetooth.
Should I clean the AirPods whenever ANC seems weak?
Clean only when the symptoms match Apple’s guidance: reduced bass or increased background sound while ANC is enabled. Use only the encircled AirPods 4 meshes and Apple’s specified micellar-water, soft-bristled toothbrush, distilled-water rinse, and drying procedure. Do not rinse the earbuds under a tap.
Why does my AirPods 4 case have no setup button for resetting?
AirPods 4 use a front-of-case sequence instead of the older setup-button method. With the lid open and earbuds inside, double-tap the case front when the light is on, again when it flashes white, and a third time when it flashes faster. Amber followed by white confirms the reset.
