AirPlay problems usually come from one of three layers: the local network and receiving permissions, the audio controls on the source and TV, or the HDMI path between an Apple TV and its display. Start by putting both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network, confirming that AirPlay receiving is allowed, and restarting them. If the picture is visible but silent, check mute and volume on both ends. If an Apple TV produces a completely black picture, isolate the HDMI connection by reseating or replacing the cable, changing the TV input and port, and bypassing any switch or AV receiver.
Identify which AirPlay failure you have
The fastest fix depends on what you see. A black screen and missing sound are not the same fault: a black screen points first to video delivery, display selection or HDMI handshaking, while a picture with no sound usually means that audio is muted, turned down or being sent through the wrong part of the setup.
| What you see | Most likely layer | First checks |
|---|---|---|
| The TV stays black or says there is no signal | HDMI connection, TV input, switch or receiver; if the AirPlay device is not discovered, network or permissions | Confirm the TV input, reseat both HDMI ends, try another cable and port, then connect Apple TV directly to the TV |
| The picture appears but there is no sound | Mute or volume on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, television or receiver | Raise volume and remove mute on both the source device and the TV or receiver |
| The AirPlay destination does not appear | Wi‑Fi, device state, software, VPN or receiving permissions | Power on and bring devices near each other, update them, join the same Wi‑Fi, disable interfering VPN configurations and allow AirPlay receiving |
| AirPlay asks for a password or is refused | Apple TV password or Home app restrictions | Review the receiving device’s password requirement and Home app speaker or TV restrictions |
Use the branch that matches the symptom instead of repeatedly changing unrelated settings. A network fix cannot repair a bad HDMI cable, and replacing an HDMI cable will not make a hidden AirPlay receiver appear in Screen Mirroring.

1. Power on both devices and keep them nearby
Turn on the iPhone, iPad or Mac and the TV or Apple TV. Keep the source and receiver close enough for their normal network connection and make sure the television is awake on the input used by the receiver. A sleeping TV, powered-off Apple TV or source that has lost Wi‑Fi cannot complete a mirroring session.
2. Update the operating software
Install available software updates on the source device, Apple TV or AirPlay-enabled television. AirPlay depends on compatible software on both ends; an update can also correct a connection defect without changing your settings. Restart after updating if either device requests it.
3. Put both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network
On the iPhone or iPad, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring, and look for the Apple TV or AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV. The source and receiver must have Wi‑Fi enabled and be connected to the same network. If the destination is missing, check the network name on each device rather than assuming that two nearby networks are equivalent.

4. Allow AirPlay receiving
On the receiving device, open its AirPlay settings and make sure Allow AirPlay Receiving is enabled. If receiving is disabled, the source may be fully functional but have no permitted destination. On a smart TV, use the television’s AirPlay settings; on Apple TV, use its AirPlay and Home settings.

5. Restart the source and receiver
Close the mirroring session, restart the iPhone, iPad or Mac, and restart the Apple TV or television. Reopen Screen Mirroring only after both devices have finished starting. This clears a temporary discovery or playback state without changing your saved content.
6. Check Home app restrictions
If the devices share a Home, restrictions can prevent a speaker or TV from accepting AirPlay. Review the Home app’s settings for speaker and TV access and remove a restriction that blocks the person or device you are using. Test again after the permission change.

7. Review password requirements
If Apple TV asks for a password, check the Apple TV’s AirPlay password requirement and enter the configured password. A password prompt that is repeatedly rejected is an access-setting problem, not evidence that the HDMI cable is defective. If you do not control the Apple TV, ask its owner to confirm the password or adjust the receiving restriction.
Fix a black screen or “no signal” from Apple TV
When an Apple TV powers on but the television remains black, treat the HDMI path as a separate system. AirPlay can be working while the display connection is failing. Perform these tests in order so that each result narrows the fault.
Confirm the selected TV input
Use the television remote to select the HDMI input that matches the port connected to Apple TV. TVs often retain the last-used input, so a correct cable can still produce a black screen when the wrong source is selected. Wait a few seconds after switching inputs for the signal to appear.

Reseat both HDMI ends
Disconnect the HDMI cable from the Apple TV and the television, then reconnect each end firmly. A partially inserted plug can carry an intermittent or incomplete signal. Check both connectors for visible damage and make sure the cable is not being pulled sideways by a tight bend.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTry another HDMI cable
Substitute a known-good HDMI cable. For HDMI 2.1 connections, Apple specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Cable replacement is an isolation test: if the picture returns with the second cable, keep the replacement and retire the suspect cable.
Try another HDMI port on the television
Move the Apple TV connection to a different HDMI input and select that input on the TV. If one port works and another does not, the original port or its configuration is the likely issue. Record which port works so you can reconnect other equipment without losing the working path.
Bypass a switch or AV receiver
Connect Apple TV directly to the television, temporarily removing an HDMI switch, soundbar pass-through or AV receiver from the chain. If the direct connection restores the picture, the intermediate switch or receiver is the point to investigate. Check its selected input, power state, HDMI settings and cable connections one at a time before putting it back in the chain.
This direct-connection test is more informative than replacing every cable at once: it distinguishes a television or Apple TV problem from an intermediary that is not passing the signal correctly.

Interpret the result of the HDMI isolation test
- Direct connection works, pass-through does not: focus on the HDMI switch or AV receiver and its input, output and cables.
- A different cable works: the original cable is the failed component; use the cable type appropriate to the connection, including Ultra High Speed for HDMI 2.1.
- A different TV port works: use the working port and investigate the original port separately.
- No cable or port works: continue with the network and receiving checks, then consider a hardware fault in the Apple TV or television rather than repeatedly retrying AirPlay.
Restore sound when the picture is visible
If mirroring produces a picture but no audio, Apple’s troubleshooting instruction is to make sure the volume is turned up and not muted on both the iOS device and the television or receiver. Check every device that can control the audio path.
Check the source device
While the AirPlay session is active, raise the volume on the iPhone, iPad or Mac and verify that its mute control is off. If headphones, a Bluetooth speaker or another output is connected, disconnect it or select the intended AirPlay destination again so sound is not being directed elsewhere.
Check the television or receiver
Raise the TV volume, cancel mute and confirm that the television is using the input and audio output associated with Apple TV or the AirPlay session. If an AV receiver or soundbar is in the path, check its volume and mute state as well as the selected input. A silent receiver can make a correctly delivered AirPlay stream appear broken.
Retest without extra audio equipment
If sound remains absent, connect Apple TV directly to the television and use the TV speakers for a test. This removes the receiver or soundbar from the audio path. If the TV speakers work, restore the receiver and test its input and output connections individually. If the TV speakers are also silent, return to source-device mute and volume checks before changing HDMI hardware.

- Confirm that both devices are powered on, awake and near each other.
- Enable Wi‑Fi on the source and receiver and join both to the same Wi‑Fi network.
- Temporarily disconnect a VPN configuration that may block local networking.
- Install available software updates on both devices.
- Enable Allow AirPlay Receiving on the receiver.
- Review Home app restrictions that may block TV or speaker access.
- Restart both devices, then open Control Center and choose Screen Mirroring again.
If the receiver appears only after one of these changes, repeat the test once after a restart. That confirms the correction instead of relying on a single accidental connection.
Choose the right next step by symptom
| Symptom after testing | Next action |
|---|---|
| No destination listed in Screen Mirroring | Stay in the network and permissions branch: same Wi‑Fi, VPN, software updates, AirPlay receiving and Home restrictions |
| Destination listed, but TV is black | Use the TV input, HDMI reseat, cable, port and direct-connection tests |
| Picture works, sound is missing | Check mute and volume on the source, TV and receiver; then test with Apple TV directly connected to the TV |
| Password prompt blocks connection | Review the Apple TV AirPlay password requirement or ask the owner to authorize the device |
| Direct Apple TV connection works but the normal setup fails | Investigate the HDMI switch, AV receiver or soundbar pass-through path |
Common mistakes that waste time
- Changing HDMI cables before checking discovery: a cable cannot make an unavailable AirPlay receiver appear in Screen Mirroring.
- Checking only the phone’s volume: the television or receiver may still be muted or set to a different input.
- Assuming nearby means same network: both devices must be connected to the same Wi‑Fi network, not merely located in the same room.
- Leaving a VPN active during testing: a VPN configuration can interfere with local-network communication.
- Testing through every accessory at once: bypass switches and receivers first so each part of the HDMI path can be evaluated separately.
- Ignoring access controls: AirPlay receiving, Home app restrictions and Apple TV password settings can deliberately block a connection that otherwise appears healthy.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek hardware help
Escalate after you have completed the isolation tests rather than after a single failed attempt. If the receiver is visible, both devices share Wi‑Fi, receiving is allowed, volume and mute are correct, and Apple TV still shows no picture when connected directly to the TV with a known-good cable on multiple inputs, the remaining problem is more likely hardware than an AirPlay permission setting. Likewise, if direct TV audio works but the normal receiver path does not, focus service or replacement decisions on the switch, receiver or soundbar path.
Keep the working combination documented: the TV input and port, the cable type, whether Apple TV is direct or routed through a receiver, and the AirPlay receiving and password settings. That record makes it easier to restore the setup after a TV input change or software update.
